- In this video I will replace the rear brake pads on a 2020 Toyota Camry XLE with the electronic parking brake.
Specifications:
With electronic parking brake minimum rotor thickness specification will be 10.5 mm (0.414 in.)
W/o electronic parking brake minimum rotor specification will be 8.5 mm (0.335 in.)
Parts:
Shim kit: Optional: 04946-02120
Rear brake pads: : 04466-0E070
Tools:
3/8" ratchet: amzn.to/3h9zshn
14mm Socket 3/8" amzn.to/40MEyln
3/8" Torque Wrench: amzn.to/3Pcue0V
-For Caliper bolts
1/2" Torque Wrench: amzn.to/3BjJof1
-For Wheel lug nuts
Flat head screw driver: amzn.to/3iJpp32
-Alternate to compressing the brake piston
Brake piston compressor: amzn.to/3MRoSYS
This is not the exact one I used. I used a bluepoint compressor tool that has since been discontinued. This is a good alternative but remember you can use a flat head screwdriver or prybar on this brake piston setup because it does not need to be turned to compress back in.

Great video man ! Ppl Very important to put it in service mode to retract the piston or you could mess up the electronic parking brake.
Thank you 👍🏼
@@friendlymechanic9778question did you put your foot on tha brake when you put it service mode ?
Thank you for such a great and descriptive video. It helped me tremendously and saved me a lot of money. Do you know how to bleed the brakes to this particular car/model? Mine are spongy after doing the brake pads replacement. Thanks again for your video.
When I get around to doing the brake fluid replacement I’ll post a video on it.
My brakes are done Thank You for your video because the dealership parts department didn’t know nothing. Told me to go get a repair book from the library or Auto Zone. Thank you again.
Happy to help! This is why I make my videos so everyone can be able to work on their car!
How much did you end up saving?
They sell the parts, not labor
@@friendlymechanic9778most likely several hundreds
This saves you money, plus the time you put into it gives you knowledge of how it's done .
👍🏼
My brakes are done. Thanks for the video. It really helped out!
That’s awesome! Glad I could help! 👊🏼
Thank You🎉
great video thank you
Your welcome!
I’ve seen several how to’s here on yt regarding installing pads for this car and this is the first I’ve seen putting the car into service mode. I was getting ready to install the tomorrow and I am so glad I watched your video. Also, do you not need to use brake lube on the pads?
Use brake grease on the pads.
Anti sieze works better then brake grease. Should give it a try
Thank you for nice presentation 😊
Your welcome!
@@friendlymechanic9778what brand are those brake pads ? That dark glossy finish looks pretty sick !
I bought these from the dealer. But I don’t know what brand they are.
Excellent Video, thanks
No problem 👍🏼
THANK YOU !!! it helped me a lot, excellent demonstration 10/10

Hi. How do I measure the disc and what are the spects, also I though friction would cause some waving on surface and should get resurface when replacing pads?
Good video 👍🏼
Hello I have a video on how I measure the rotors. The car in the video is a BMW but the process and tool used are the same. The rotors can get warped as you use the brake pads, But if you are not experiencing vibration while braking replacing the brake pads alone will be okay. It is not always necessary to resurface the rotors at every brake pad replacement.
In this video th-cam.com/video/Y0sLm-FE8wY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=t2X4eSolx8ixCyxO
at time stamp 1:55 - 2:30 I go over the tool used and how to measure the rotors
This is the paid affiliate link to the tool I used. amzn.to/3x9I3Iw
As for the specs for the rear rotors there are two specs depending if you have electronic parking brake or don't have electronic parking brake.
With electronic parking brake minimum specification will be 10.5 mm (0.414 in.)
W/o electronic parking brake minimum specification will be 8.5 mm (0.335 in.)
If you want to check if the rotor is warped, You will need to measure the rotor at 8 different spots on the rotor. divide it up like a pie with a marker and keep turning the rotor until you have 8 measurements. the difference between the highest and lowest can not be more than 0.15 mm (0.00591 in.)
Let me know if you have any other questions.
Great instructional video; it’s more functional & visually better than the one produced by The Car Care Nut! Well done. Tku
Thank you I appreciate it. His channel is amazing. I like learning from him since he specializes in Toyota.
Thanks

Hello
Replacing my brake rotor.
Please provide torque specs for the front and rear caliper bracket and caliper pin bolts.
Thanks
Just so you know, the AK on the pad stands for Akebono. You can get these directly from Akebono with the clips and shims included, or you can get them from a parts store if you find a deal. Also, you can just loosen the bottom caliper bolt and remove the top, and then it'll lean back enough to remove the pads, like a hinge.
That's good to know thank you! 👍🏼
@@friendlymechanic9778 dealerships mark up the pads by like $20-$30, or in some cases they just charge extra for the clips/shims that normallycome with the pads. I like and buy OEM parts but these car makers get their parts from public parts manufacturers. No need to pay a middleman(dealership) when you can go to the same company that they buy from and buy the part yourself. Just research what company makes the part you need and then go to that company and buy it at cost.
ACT1879 is the OE equivalent I don’t see the same shims
@@anorton4821 the shims come in the box with the pads.
@@donniev8181I just got the Act1879s and they do not include the shims.
I'm surprised you didn't add any Greece to wear. The pad is sliding back and forth
7:04 - what product did you spray on the rotor? And do you need to spray this on a new rotor if installing a new rotor?
Thank you 🙏
That’s brake clean/parts clean spray. You can find it online or at an auto parts store.
You don’t need to use this on new rotors to install them. I just use it to clean off loose brake pad dust or if i get some brake dust on the rotors I’ll spray it down to get it off.
Amazing video! Was almost like ASMR.. it was so relaxing to watch lol
You know you’re not the first person to tell me that it’s relaxing and almost like ASMR.
did everything correct and when i pump yhe pedal it says lower braking power see owners manual
Question do I have to put on on service mode to change the front brake pads as well?
No, only rears have parking brake module
No, only the rear brake pads require service mode.
Do you have video for rotors
Sorry I don't have a video on the rotors. When they are due ill make a follow up video with rotors
After how many miles on this vehicle were the brake pads replaced?
41,170 miles for the rear and the front pads were replaced shortly after about another 500 miles or so.
@@friendlymechanic9778glad I saw this comment. I was just getting ready to do mine at 22k.... I guess I have some more time to figure it out.
Sorry I have a 2018 you can’t push the rear piston in you have to turn the piston to go back in with the special tool.
Ahh okay do you know which tool you need or do you need a link to a tool.
@@friendlymechanic9778I would love a link please
I notice you didn’t use any brake grease on any of the contact points, is that not required on this particular car?
Brake paste should be applied to the contact points for this car.
I was about to say the same! It was however a helpful video, my first dealing with an electronic E brake.
Yeah I usually apply the paste to the contact points pull out the pins and grease those as well.
What size is the socket for the lug nuts
21mm
21mm
21mm
I did the process to retract the parking brakes. Did the brakes and rotors as normal. Tried to reset parking brake. Now it says parking brake fault. Take to dealer. Any way to reset without a computer?
How did you reset the parking brake?
@@friendlymechanic9778 not the right way, evidently lol
Hmmm I haven’t had the issue come up on my end. I would try the process again and see if the fault goes away. But I would guess even if the issue is resolved it may need to be reset with a scan tool.
@@friendlymechanic9778 I’ve tried everything more than once. I dropped it off at the dealer.
Is this work for the TRD??
I have not tried this on a TRD version but I would safely assume it is the same.
Why u didn't get new rotors or turn your rotors? No greese for noise. Everything else was okay ✅
The rotors did not measure under spec so they could still be used. As for the brake pad paste, that was missed and I would advise that everyone else apply brake pad paste.
If you change your pads early or right on time you shouldn't have to replace rotors for a very long time
Too bad you don't show where to put. The Jack stands and we're the lifting points off. Show lifting pointand where to place a Jackson.
Why don't you make your own video then?
Its the same on most cars! When you look down the edge of the car you will see the strong points!
It’s sad you don’t know where to jack up any vehicle from 😂🤡
What if you skip the initial parking brake step at the beginning?
If you skip that step you won’t be able to retract the piston back into the caliper and installing the new brake pads won’t be possible. This step can not be skipped.
