The dealer wanted to chrage me 1,000 dollars for doing all 4 brakes. And i was going to go that route because of the electric parking brake but after seeing this video i went to rockauto and spent only 400 on high quality brakes and rotors. Thank you
Once again, excellent and simply presented, thanks. I too have never dealt with EPB's but your method certainly works. If I may make one suggestion, one thing I've always done, even before stainless pad clips were invented, is anti-seize the slot and surfaces contacting the stainless clips to the caliper bracket. You virtually eliminate the rust building up between the 2 surfaces and when it's time to change the pads they're more evenly worn and thus longer pad life as a result. Been doing this driveway brake tip for almost 50 years! Again, thank you!
Toyota has a sequence you can do inside the car to put it in brake service mode just look it up before you do the service and you can skip the last step Edit: you don’t need scanner
Great video however, I would recommend trying doing the disengaging the parking brake using the auto method first then conducting the manual practice if there was a problem. Excellent teaching video and interesting how the rear parking brakes work
good video, but the last 7 minutes you could avoid doing it from inside the car. you only need to pass the brakes to maintenance mode. to do it you keep the brake pedal pressing, then the brake button you pull it up 3 times and then push down 3 times, you release the brake pedal and then keep the brake button pressing down until you stop hearing the brake engine and those keep retracted until you finish the job, to activate them again it is the same process but in this case you keep the brake button up until you stop listening to the brake engine... don't forget to pump the brakes well before using the car!
Man, thank you so much. You save my booty. Some videos don’t show you how to retract the break system and you did it like nothing. I done the job just for you. Thank you so much.🫡
You can disengaged the electronic by follow the sequences, turn on/off ignition twice then start the car, press on brake and push the left button 3 times down and then 3 times up and let go the brake then pull the button up until you see the park brake light on the dash flashing that you can use the ply to push the piston in without taking out the electronic motor.
Thank you,.for the detailed video and information. I'm not a mechanic by any means but I do basic stuff myself. I had never done brakes on a car with EPB. I set myself up for failure trying tho😞. Job did not get done! Because of time constraints I'll be looking for the cheapest shop now. That will be the first for some brakes.. 🙄 just adding salt to the wound!
@danthebrakeman That video i commented on, I watched maybe 5 times already and will watch plenty more, shop prices are just too high I'll be changing them soon. I'm sure that day I'll keep going back to it. Thank you very much again
There are videos which show how to disable the Electronic parking brake from with inside the care for Toyota Corolla 2020, which is what I have. Otherwise a Great Video. Wish me luck going for the first time changing my rear brakes.
You can put Toyota's into brake Service Mode. Lots of videos on how to do it. Works very well and no messing with Electronic Parking Brake on caliper. No scan tool tequired.
Yes, there is a procedure to put it into service mode. I've only done it once but it did not retract the piston enough to allow for new pad installation. That being said, Dan's method eliminates that problem altogether. Well done @danthebrakeman , you have another subscriber!
It's a pain half the time it works half the time it doesn't. I only use the on board method for ford, Chrysler, mazda, Lincoln and a few other obscure makes. The manual method is simple and doesn't rely on a computer.
This video is an EXTREME help!! I wish i had seen this video when i did mine. Im hoping someone can help me here, i had manually spun the piston back into position... I am now getting a "Parking Break Malfunction" i am curious to if i had damaged the motor inside? Or if i am able to take apart my brakes, follow the steps in the video and then properly use my e-brake? Any insight would be helpful here as the toyota dealership will just advise me to replace the motor.
To prevent malfunctions with Electric Parking brake, when you disconnect the EPB with the brake caliper, use non metal grease between the 2 when you re install it again. #1 reason why EPB fail is because theres no lubrication and over the years it will start to fail. Clean off old grease and apply new grease everytime you change rear brakes.
Hey dan! I did what you showed in the video only I put my 2019 corolla in rear brake service mode first. Now when I try to re-activate the electronic parking brake it says 'parking brake unavailable' into 'parking brake malfunction'. Do you know the solution to this?
@@danthebrakeman damn I wish I watched your video first your way is the way it’s a lot to explain but I fixed it but still have to take it to the dealership
@@danthebrakeman both. I put it in service mode with the button inside. Got a yellow light on the dash for rear brake service mode. Thanks for the video. My girlfriend is asking me to her daughters 2021 corolla LE. I've done brakes on my 2009 honda CRV but never one with EPB. I have a 2021 Mazda CX-5 now and understand there is a step on the rears to do for the EPB. Just wondering, you don't mention torque specs. Isn't that kinda important for those of us who dont do this everday and have a feel for tightening the bolts? It seems kinda important safety wise.
My hex bolts on the actuator won't budge at all. I think I have the right size but my hex bit just keeps spinning on the head of the bolt without grabbing it. What am I doing wrong? Btw this is my first time doing this and I don't want to end up stripping the bolt. Would a long arm hex key give me enough torque to remove it without the impact?
Hey I have a question. My right rear caliper makes a clicking noise when I step on my breaks. I had ordered a caliper. Do you think it’s a caliper issue?
I'm not criticizing you but it's an observation because I do this also for living and safeties one of my issues and any type of job God bless and Godspeed in Jesus mighty name amen
You dont need to unplug the EPB!! Put the car in accessorie mode, hold down on the parking brake button until the dash says that the automatic EPB is off. Then turn off the car. To turn it back on repeat the process but hold up on the parking brake button until it says the automatic EPB is on.
11 you explain the hand tools and side sockets and tools of preference but you forgot all one thing and you say you do this professionally my question is this you didn't talk about no safety aspect like chucking the wheels getting a jack stands and a a floor jack which is one of the primary tools that you will need to get to that brake system under the carriage of the car😮
I wish I would have watched this video before I changed my breaks. I started the car and accidentally pushed the caliper all the way out, and now My parking break will not work after I changed my breaks. It says parking break unavailable.
You may be able to dis assemble everything, retract the parking manually , as shown in the video, assemble everything back, unhook the battery, and reset it.
@ I haven’t watched the video in a while, but I think if you follow the videos directions from the start it should work. I had to unhook the break caliper, and manually unscrew the plunger back. Then bleed the breaks. Then take it to the dealer to clear out the fault. It cost like $129
