I was with CSX for 8 years, my vest was never that clean, I went through a pair of gloves like every 2 weeks or so and never wore my radio in the front with the wires across my chest... We did do crew briefings but there were times, especially working nights where we saw no upper management. We printed out our work orders and switch list and did it.. We always tried to avoid talking to the higher ups...

My only “experience” with railroading is with simulators and model railroads, and even I could see the BS. I love how company videos, no matter what industry it is whether it’s railroads, trucking, factories, or whatever always make a point to say “it’s a lot of hard work, but it’s worth it” to try and rope people in.

It's how the corporate stooges running the line want the public (and new hires) to think is actually going on. I've been involved with production training videos like this, and you'd be shocked to hear how stupidly ignorant most of these people are. We'd get notes back from the C-Suite with "suggestions" like 'why are the uniforms all dirty and torn? Reshoot those scenes with clean work attire'.
Or there's the one we got once with "why is it so loud? I couldn't hear the instructor clearly because of all the sounds of equipment and machinery." Well, I think you answered your own question, genius.
Or my favorite, 'why is there no diversity in the video?' which is coded talk for "replace all those talented old white men that know every facet of the job and could train a child to do what they do, with people of oppressed races and sexualities who don't know what tf they're doing but check the 'inclusion' and 'representation' equity checkboxes". We had to reshoot a video of a 40 year veteran trainer, who had been replaced with a young, gay black guy who had been there six months. The 40 year veteran was literally standing behind the director telling the young guy what to say and do, because he had no clue. This is the natural end result of companies that have a DEI department calling their shots.

I’m a conductor for CP Rail in Windsor,Ontario,Canada & we do runs through the Windsor/Detroit river tunnel with new vehicle deliveries & it’s pretty cool at first going through the river tunnel but now I’m sick of the b.s. with homeless people being in the tunnel because of border security not doing their jobs to keep it safe for us going through. Anything from suicide attempts to trying to derail the train to tweaking out on drugs walking down the tracks. As soon as you cross into Detroit what a much different world it is with all kinds of different characters. Anyways God Speed my fellow railroaders

Worked for UP and CP. For those thinking about railroading it is extremely challenging work life balance, believe me. You will miss everything with family. You can never really plan anything because the phone will ring unexpectedly ordering you to go to work. The callers/schedulers will call you in the middle of the night trying to trick you into taking trains that aren’t yours. The schedules that they provide online are supposed to give you a roundabout time your train leaves. Good luck with that it’s never accurate.
At least once a week you will be caught short and go in dog tired. On top of that you have train, masters, etc. watching your every move.
Everyone I worked with exception of a few hated their lives. Divorces and substance abuse run rampant.
I was so lucky to get out of that situation because I was miserable. I never got in trouble and always showed up early for work. But everyone around you is doom and gloom.
So what you can make $100,000 a year. It is so not worth it. They literally own you.
The unions are extremely weak and disorganized. If you get in trouble, usually their hands are tied. Lots of people getting permanently fired(ive been in 5 unions in my life)
I have kept in contact with a few people back at the railroad and they’re all wishing they had something better to go to.
Also, you have to pay for or should pay for Can insurance. If you don’t know what that is, it is insurance for when you get fired. It’s like unemployment insurance for the railroad. Everyone has it and it can run a few hundred dollars a month.
    You’ve been warned !!

Almost same scenario with driving ready mix trucks, you'll get a call in just barely enough time to get some decent rest, overall ambiance is gloomy, just people that hate their lives, no work to life balance, it's not worth it. I'm just doing this last week I have another job lined up.

Yea that's what I was thinking. For that amount of money a year, I'd definitely work for the railroad for about 4 years and then get out.
In those 4 years I will make more money than working at Dairy Queen in 25 years! I would pretty much not need to work fully ever again and just depend on a part time to keep sustaining myself appropriately.

I seen one thing that was wrong . When he got between the cars to lace up the air hoses he failed to contact the engineer to request 3 Step Protection. Also the reason CSX uses Atlanta now for the training facility is they used to contract out to places to "train" potential individuals to become conductors. The only thing that these places would guarantee is an interview with CSX half way through the class. Weather or not you get hired on or not by CSX is left entirely up to csx.

I'll be damned. I knew there was at least one true railroader left out there and when I heard the title of "Trainmaster" being used convinced me. It follows that the term "Road Foreman of Engines" is part of your railroad lexicon too.. I was one for four years. But don't hold that against me.
So you're looking for old heads? I might qualify for that position. I hired out on the first Monday of June, 1971, three days after graduating from high school. You tell me.
I am a third generation of rails on both sides of my family. We have a combined 325 years of seniority, the lion's share spent as trainmen and engine service employees with the Southern Pacific's Sacramento, Oregon, Western and Coast divisions. My paternal grand father was a hoghead with the Santa Fe that worked out of Cleburne, Texas. On my mother’s side was a carman for MoPac and the “Katy Lady” (MKT), in Missouri and Texas respectively.
When someone is seeking employment in the operating department their curiosity is about how much the job pays and what benefits are available. They say, “Yeah, yeah, yeah. On call 24/7. I can handle it.” What about your wife? Can she handle it?
You’re away from home 85% of the time. Your 12 to 16 hours off also includes mowing the lawn, cleaning gutters, changing the oil in your car, etc.
Who do you think has to pick up the slack? Thaaaat’s right. Feed the kids, get them off to school, pick them up after school, take them to after school activities (usually sports related) buy groceries, attend all the school’s renditions of plays, recitals and other activities because you’re on the road making that easy money and not home.
The recruiting programs don’t mention that. Nor do they mention the divorce rate amongst rails is three times the national average which itself is no better than a 50/50 shot.
It takes a lot of people in dozens of crafts to run the railroad; machinists, pipe fitters, electricians, laborers, carpenters, chemists, rod men, maintenance of way folks, clerks and more. Take any one of those out of the mix and nothing is going anywhere.
The last link in the chain is an engineer. “Locomotive engineer” is not what you do. It’s what you are. In addition to the other rigors of the service outlined above there is a huge and awesome amount of responsibility. If you screw up people can die or a small town can be vaporized.
Still it gets into your blood. In my case, open a vein and I would certainly bleed Daylight livery. As long as I’m alive the SP lives. When in my presence it's a bad idea to refer to the SP as a "fallen flag." The tem smacks of defeat or capitulation, both of which are a foreign conception to anyone of true SP ilk. But do so if you must.
    Then you had better duck.

Working a job that has an unstable work-life balance will make you hate your job even more. Unfortunately, that is how our system runs in this society. It depends, I can't speak for other rail lines but csx typically has 2 conductors. Depending on the yard and what the seniority guys prefer, you either go out on trains or you stay at the yard organizing trains. If you go out, that's where the crazy schedule and a lot of extra money is to be made. But if you stay on yard, once you get slotted to a shift you're typically not gonna deviate from it much, other than sometimes working over of somebody calls out. You get stuck on 3rd shift Tuesday through Saturday, most of the time that's what you can expect to work all the time, unless another spot opens up you can bid for or someone with seniority wants yours and kicks you
