That Valve intro tune is already so powerful to me... If I get to be 70, and I dust off an old PC with half-life 1 installed, and that song starts playing, I know that my Lord and Saviour Gaben will watch over me in death as he did in life, and I might shed a tear. Praise Gaben.
Truly. This interview came out during my "peak" gaming years, and IMO when PC gaming was on fire. I'm 35 now and I haven't touched a computer/ video game in close to two years. I lost interest in gaming as Valve lost interest in making games.
I think Gabe lost his coding instinct long ago, though he has some ambitious visions, he always hires people who are smarter than him. That is success.
Developing a PS3 game apparently IS a mess, but the results can be outstanding. Having worked with Microsoft for so many years, it was only natural Gabe wasn't used to the PS3 and immediately dismissed it, I don't blame him.
i've used steam since it was released as optional, and I can say from personal experience that it has evolved so much since then. It really makes pc gaming easier and more fun, especially multiplayer components of games.
@nexus1g There are multiple kinds of IBR. What he talks about, my guess, would be a combination of Imposters - i.e. caching rendered graphics as images, and Deferred Shading, a process which outputs intermediate rendering results as image and then recombines them to final image, which allows to change time impact from scene_complexity*shader_complexity to scene_complexity+shader_complexity, allowing for more complex shader or more complex scene. Can drop me a message if confused.
Coming from a gamer boy here in beautiful Eureka, Gabe Newell is the only man I simply have respect to. He is highly resourceful and talented at everything he's doing. Praise Lord Gaben!! :)
Yes this is true that consoles blow air from the fans located inside the systems. Much as PC does to keep out dust and cool the system. I appreciate your comment informing us of such a helpful and effective gadget.
I don't understand how IBR will work. The geometry is already being transformed into a 2-D rasterized image, so I don't understand what having images will help with.
actually at E3 Sony spokesman stated how Gabe doesn't like consoles and then went on to talk about how Portal 2 for PS3 will be receiving move controls to go along with its steam support. On a somewhat related note CS:GO PS3-PC cross support! $15 on PSN and PC
@peaada04 What games are better on console than they are on PC, and how are they better? The game would play exactly the same if you use a controller on PC (atleast you have the choice), only you'd have the advantage of running the game at higher framerates and at better resolutions/graphics.
lol that's like saying a (stock) Honda Civic is faster than a McLaren F1. And considering the Honda Civic is the thing representing console in this analogy, this means you can't even modify said Honda Civic, in order to make it faster. Here's another analogy... If PC and console were pipes side by side with water flowing through them (water representing game data), the pipe representing PC would be many times wider than the one representing consoles. Able to move much more water, much faster.
@Ptrrrrrrrr Currently this will take up a lot of the computer's processing power. They have to display the level to the player according to where he looks the rest will be empty. All objects are not all displayed at once so it will be hard to create 3dimensional hit detection. Also if all the objects where to be placed in one level it will require a very powerful cpu. The only CPU that could probably do it is a laser based CPU.
Almost every demo for console games at any E3 are run on high end PCs and not the console. It's very simple to connect an XBox or PS3 controller to a PC.
gabe may be... slightly larger than normal, but he is one of the greatest geniouses of our time. he gave us great amazing games like half life, portal, left 4 dead, team fortress 2, and many others. so who cares if he may be a little overweight, he is a genious who cares about his clients and gives theam great games. and he doesnt ask for much i return (well besides money, but it is his job so who can blame him)
Did these guys realize level of journalism podcast quality this is and we genuinely don’t have it today. This is seriously a historic interview. Gabe is genuinely the best and seriously good content. This is from 17 years ago and I hope we can all appreciate the context of the convo ❤️❤️❤️❤️🙏🙏🙏
What do you mean vs? Mod stands for modification. They, for all intensive purposes, can greatly enhance gameplay, add tons of new content, and do things that are unheard of in the console world. In addition, computers, due to their superior hardware can allow for bigger, more extensive play options. Look at BF3, for example. 64 players on PC, something that would probably be impossible on console.
If i recall correctly they had problems porting half life 2 to the PS3 and had to hire a 3rd party later(EA) to create a port, they found that the programming was more complex for the PS3.
@noelsoong777 It doesn't work like that. It has something to do with image copying... I wish I could link you the video, but I don't have the link atm. Might return with it later.
Valve employees where seen earlier this year sporting HL3 t-shirts at some electronics conference :) Wait for the next gen consoles - it'll release with them f'sure. 2014 is my guess
i dunno, i consider the power of a desktop better and the availability of games via laptop a pretty big bite in comparison to a console. plus larger hard drive space for more games. more available controller options, easier to mod games such as arma with DayZ. and in the past we've seen people make emulators for consoles to play games on the pc. in addition to what i have said, no console can have a good working, operation RTS game, the controller is not set up for it.
@noelsoong777 Why not? It's a different way of running graphics... our current gpu's not capable of running that? I'm no expert on this technical stuff...
"we have taken a stab at writing a script, but at the end of the day non of the movies were worth doing" Well gabe the problem is a good movie requires a coherent plot. This would make it impossible for you make a movie based off one of valves games. What little plot they do contain has a heavy resemblance to that of swiss cheese due to the countless plot holes.
he doesn't like the ps3 because it has the number 3 in it.
so true xdddddddddddddd
Facts😂
Or because he used to work at microsoft
Aaaaaaah so thats why
Dylan Colbert he cannot count to 3
Gabe doesn't have anything against Playstation, he just hate the number: 3.
Ninjawa why did half-life 2 com on xbox 360? Hmm... He dont like the nummber 3, 360... 36... 3... half-life 3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
NoobPownerXD Half Life 3 release in 2060 confirmed!
+NoobPownerXD hl2 was on ps3 aswell....
the problem is the CPU of PS3 which is extremely difficult to develop
uh oh this comment is *3* years old
It looks like a intro for a villain at 0:12
spoilers: Gaben is the final boss in HL3
I fucking lol'd at both comments
Bubble Bass 3% off the sale
With the added music like a final boss
that`s why xbox one is named one, not 3. they want to have valve games on their console
NFKRZ you're mom gay
NFKRZ heh nfkrz on a valve video
@@cutebuiltgood Good grammar
@Ralof Nice joke
@@miliciaganado5219 Thakns you
So this is the origin on why Gabe doesn't count to 3.
No he left microsoft around the time Windows 3 came out!
He has $1.3 billion dollars, don't think he needs to know how
Safwat Khan nah he has $1.2B, he hates number 3 so he gave away some for charity
nuttedlemons lol best joke all year
nuttedlemons btw happy new years
You can't stop the gaben.
Well, you don't need to, I mean he doesn't move around much
Gabe Newell touché
Have you tried taking control and pressing the gaben?
3 can stop gabe
It's It's Playstation THREE. That's why.

This man is a pioneer. What he is describing became the industry standard for game rendering engines.
Wait really I'm trying to understand but I'm just new to all this so can't really keep up
Of course he doesn't like something that ends in 3.
There are 3 counter strikes. Cs 1.6 , Cs:GO , Cs Zero.
He cant count to 3 so he made game called Cs Zero
Lol
Kristian Nykänen CS:zero is a cs 1.6 add on, not a sequel. Evwn if it was it would be the SECOND game, not hte third
there will be three new games for the Half Life.
Quarter Life: the prequel
Quarter Life: half way
and Final Life: episodes 1/2, 1, 2-1/2, 2 and 0
Kristian Nykänen
you forgot CS:Source... therefore making it 2 games and 2 episodes.(CS:zero is CS 1.6: episode 1 and CS:s is CS 1.6 episode 1.5)
Half life 3
0:12 Best Valve intro ever

Trust me, we'd love it to see a movie based on a Valve game.Maybe Valve could collaborate with Pixar to make a Team Fortress movie.

@slackingstacker I am well aware of that, but the implication that is was originally released on the Xbox is what I find... humorous...
5:50 You can tell gaben pissed his pants when he said "Half Life 3"
I mean look at that face.
Guys. This is 2006. It was the beginning of a new gaming generation and it was a pain in the ass to program
You can hear that in 0:50 of ''Half Life 2 Episode 2 - Dark Interval''
