The secret to being as good as Paul Gilbert is just two simple things: 1) Having every song ever written playing simultaneously in your head and being able to pick out the part you want and instantly transcribe it to guitar. 2) Level 99 happiness and enthusiasm. Easy peasy.
Straight up fact; Why Paul is as good as he is, is directly because of the support he got from his parents. His father built his amps and guitars, his name is George. George built a lot of amps for local guys. I have one. His Dad took him to the Randy Rhodes seminar at a local guitar shop, 2 months before he died. Ozzy heard about him, I assume through Randy. George also had sent a cassette of Paul to Mike Varney the year before and Mike called him Randy Rhodes Jr. Ozzy got Pauls contact info from Mike and called the Gilbert residence, saying he wanted to hire Paul when he was 16 and luckily George said absolutely not he's too young. And that probably saved Paul's career and maybe his life, LOL. Paul was so mad about that but his Dad sent him out to that school instead and well, the rest is history. But his parents were the reason he became what he is.
“Everything was working perfectly, I couldn’t be happier... so I changed everything” If that doesn’t represent 99% of guitarists, I don’t know what does.
Bar chords wre impossible for me, then I got a new guitar and *magic*. Turns out they're really hard for a child to play on a cheap full-size classical guitar with insanely high action. Even now I struggle to play some on that particular guitar :D
Paul Gilbert is magical. He's so insanely skilled yet humble and there's a child-like passion to him when he talks about music. He's also amazingly articulate with what he wants to convey in his teachings and his playing. He's got a bluesman's soul, a popstar's heart and the skill of a virtuoso. He's the 80s equivalent of John Mayer with his unabashed love of pop music offset with monster guitar chops.

You should watch this video of a guitar battle with Marty Friedman called something like A-Z Heavy Metal and it’s basically a game where they pick a letter of the alphabet and have to play a riff of a band that starts with that letter (i. e. T = Toto = Africa). It’s so much fun to see how fast they come out with the riff.
I was at the workshop. I was in the front row, right in front of Mr G and ahve to say a massive thanks to Andertons for putting the show on. For 12 quid you got 3 hours of Paul Gilbert, an Ernie Ball goodie bag with a set of strings, an Ernie Ball coaster, an Ernie Ball string winder and a guitar cleaning set and you got your picture taken with the great man afterwards. What a great time and memory..
This is a true savant. His enthusiasm a thing to behold. Love this guy. Unabashedly and lovably eccentric. An bona fide and authentic original. "I don't have the arms for hard labour." A throw away line. Funny. Beautiful.
Paul admits what pretty much every phenomenal musician admits...he’s a major Beatles fan. Thank God for the Fab 4, they inspired an army of great musicians.
There is nothing better than watching an interview for the first time, with someone you've grown up listening to play the guitar and realising he's a nice guy! Respect!!
Love how he plays every song he uses as an example. No idea how one man can know so many songs ready to recall at any given moment. Almost as incredible as his playing
Has anyone noticed how Mr Gilbert can't actually talk without playing music at the same time? It just seems to be the way his brain processes language as inextricably entwined with music and guitar. Amazing.
I am a 34 year old guitarist and singer who more enjoys metal music and newer stuff. I am also a carpenter and the guy I work with is a 57 year old guitarist who enjoys everything from classic rock to old blues and jazz fusion. We both listen to Paul Gilbert at least several times a week, from album beginning to end. We love it. Paul is up on that list of untouchable guitarists who will always be cutting edge. Lucky you Capt. for getting to sit with the man himself.
Funny to hear at the 30:00 mark what a bad teacher PG was and how he got fired from classroom teaching. Lol. He is by far one of my favorite youtube teachers. He makes simple and to the point videos, yet manages to teach so much.

I love all the Captain meets episodes, but i keep coming back to this one, Paul is just the nicest most genuine and humble guy. Also his playing is beyond glorious!
I met paul in 2013 after he played a gig in Manchester. Super cool and very nice guy. Me and several other people waited in freezing cold for 40 mins and he chatted to everyone and again was a super cool guy and very appreciative
31:28 That story about "being bad at something" hit really close to home. Up to 6th grade I basically had straigt A's in all subjects, my worst subject being sport where I had like a B minus, so when we got to pick a new subject in 7th grade I choose some science based class since I was really into that (and still am), but my main class teacher told my parents that I had to get into a class that was really really hard for me because I was so used to sailing through school without ever havint to learn much for tests. So they enrolled me into latin-class and that's where I received my first ever D and I was devestated and momentarily didn't want to go to school any longer, but it taught me a very valuable lesson in the long run.
Great interview! Paul was at the Satriani G3 camp I went to a year or so ago, and he was the nicest guy in all the classes he taught, and he praised EVERYONE'S technique and ideas as they jammed. His classes were of course always packed.

I really enjoyed this interview. I was a teenager in the 80s and had a few Mr. Big CDs back in the day. Paul is a really nice guy and badass player/teacher. Good stuff.
Paul Gilbert telling the stories and randomly playing is one of the most entertaining things that I could watch all day long.

I'm sure I wrote something similar to this the last time I watched this, but . . . Best freaking interview ever.
what a fantastically entertaining and refreshing interview, and i'm not even a Paul Gilbert fan, hardly know more than his name, but what a great dude! top, such a well spent hour watching this, thank you! :)
Nicest guy ever!! Cheers from Brazil!
best interview ever, Paul's enthusiasm is so refreshing 🤘
Paul sounds like a young David Letterman when he talks!
Omg, I've been racking my brain thinking who he sounds like. But that's it!!!
I caught that too LOL!
lol..brilliant
And a little Howard Stern?
Bahaha!!!
I left this video running when I left the room. I came back...& thought a ghost was playing my guitar.... I waited till I heard Captain's voice and I was relieved
Paul seems like such an awesome guy. Great video!
The Capt. Meets Tosin Abasi
The big hair story, my god was that funny!
I remember an interview with Nuno Bettencourt where he was asked what he believes to be his best quality as a guitar player. He said his hair :D
The chills right as Paul started slamming that Green Tinted intro, with his tone and years of playing it.. god damn.
I really enjoyed this interview. I was a teenager in the 80s and had a few Mr. Big CDs back in the day. Paul is a really nice guy and badass player/teacher. Good stuff.
