His passing has really hit me hard. I had the privilege of meeting and talking with Eddie 4-5 times. He used to come into my Families Liquor/Convenience store which was right down the street from his Coldwater Canyon house. He was always so humble and kind in our conversations. He even gave me one of his guitars on one of his visits. On another occasion my cousin and I who also worked at the family store saw Eddie at a gas station filling up his Black Lamborghini, we walked over to him and he remembered us from the store my cousin had a beer in his hand and Eddie asked if he could have a swig so we had a beer with Eddie while he showed us his Lambo. He always came across to me as someone completely unaware that he was a rockstar no ego whatsoever. I think what makes his passing so hard for me is knowing that he had the biggest childlike heart that just loved to create but was also so kind, gentle, humble and a decent human being. So many stories are coming out similar to mine showing Eddies kind, giving nature.
Damn! He *gave* you a guitar? Pics or it didn't happen, dude! Nah, I'm so jealous of all that lol ... congrats, seriously. I'd loved to have met the man once, much less all the rest. I have one of his picks (friend was a bouncer at one of the later Van Hagar concerts) - he gave it to me, knowing what a fan I was, and I cherish it to this day, knowing that even if it spent it's life in a box, it was at least NEAR enough to Eddie to have been considered for use by my guitar hero for 40+ years.

I saw this story on another Van Halen video - I believe it. Especially since you were 18 and selling them booze. He seemed like a very kind person deep down. I'd give an 18 year old on my block one of my guitars if I was famous. So cool.
It’s so nice that in this time we all can get away from the politics and sadness and think of something positive. The love of music from Edward Van Halen.
People love to hate on DLR but I was always amazed that he could write melody and sing over those killer EVH riffs. If the singer had of been too over the top it wouldn’t of worked.
Even they said DLR had a LOT to do with the sound of the early days, I believe it and I'm a much bigger fan of the DLR era. I do recognize that Eddie had some great guitar parts on the Van Hagar albums though. Always loved the keys too that he would break out now and again.
I'm a bit younger (was 10 yrs old at Van Halen I's release), so I was in the second or third wave lol... I've heard countless fans recount similar stories, and read countless accounts from guitarists who were mightily influenced by the album, and the stories all sound nearly identical! I would have loved to have been maybe six or seven years older at the time so I could have *really* appreciated that momentous time... But I'll take what I got, obviously, and listen to/read all those stories with a big smile, thankful that rock guitar/music was blessed with such an incredible presence. RIP, Edward Van Halen... I am a still a long time guitarist ,now in my 70's. I never met any of V.H. but really liked the music. I liked Sammy's vocals more than Dave R. He seemed to be a dick ,very overly egotistic . I've been playing guitar since 1964. Mr. Black was accurate with his memories of how playing out live in Michigan and the Mid-Western states was. In 1964 & onward we played a lot of high school gigs,college gigs, a while later. Right after picking up a guitar I started gigging at private parties, we played at C./ O. railroad halls and a lot of other small local places. I remember fondly a lot of the early rock bands. My high school was going to book a bigger band for graduation , We wanted to book Hendrix & the Experience, or the Doors, B.O. C. and/or other hard rock acts. Us guys wanted to book harder rock acts . But the females had control of the school booking ,along with the teachers. They overruled all of us guys and booked 'The Grass Roots" in 1968. We were really bummed. But After graduation I started playing all over Mid Michigan. Bars , lounges , Colleges, parties . Anywhere we could play. After a while in early 1970's, we hit the road and started playing in other states. THEN THE DRAFT , that broke up a good band. Nam destroyed a lot of good musicians and bands. Anyway I finally retired from playing out about 5 years ago. My back was really bad and a lot of medical problems became severe. So My life in music came to an end. I lasted until my age ran against me and my health became more and more problematic. I still play(practice) at home most every day still sitting down . I still have some chops at almost 71 years old. But life never stops we do. Listening to V.H. is a big big part of my road trips I'll never forget, That and sleeping and playing at Holiday Inns, or Ramada Inns all over the mid-west Area. Sleeping in Band rooms there, and eating at Rally's restaurants all over. Sorry for running on ,probably pretty boring to all your other younger players.
Van Halen hit when I was 12 and I'd just began guitar lessons a week or two before coming home one day to my rocker teenage sister telling me, " Sit down and listen to this !" . She put the Van Halen I Lp on our parents new stereo. Kids, HIFI STEREO was mastered in the 1950's, so we heard the same quality you hear now. Actually better imo... but the beloved 8-track tape was probably just as popular for VH I and VH II. Van Halen debut-'I' was a black 8-track and Van Halen II was a white 8-track. I bought *Van Halen - Women and Children First* on cassette in 1980 right before Summer camp...7 weeks of Summer Camp in Leelanau County MI, on Lke Michigan. The whole boys camp combined had maybe a dozen tapes, but the new VH WACF was the hit, most borrowed, and what we cranked at wake up "AND THE WILL ROCK". Second was *Black Sabbath Heaven and Hell* , then *The Cars Candy O* , *Rush All The World's A Stage* .
That's what made Top Jimmy stand out so much. I had no idea about what that pickup did. Ed was so experimental and sophisticated, yet always delivered an uncluttered, focused, pure sound.
The intro is called Out The Window by EVH, part of the soundtrack he wrote for a movie called The Wild Life (1984). Re-used for Back To The Future, when Marty was inspiring his "peeping Tom" Dad to go bone his mom so he can exist.
Yes a thousand times.......the context of Eddies playing and sound is extremely important to his innovation and extraordinary style. Im 55, I was 13, just becoming a guitar player. Jenson speakers.....we all had them. 😂 I love it. Eddie was a legend to our generation, and deservingly so.
Our band had just got done playing a Winter Party at Omaha Roncalli High School in February 1978, a brrrr COLD February, i was the oldest in the band, in 78, I was 26. Our band radio was on the whole trip back to Sioux City Iowa. And this song blarred, WHOA? This a new Kinks? It was You Really Got Me! DJ didn't say...Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. that next Monday I went to my favorite record store, the owner I knew. I asked if he knew, "there's a new record that has that song on a sticker, contains the hit, You Really Got Me ..have no idea who they are". I bought it and asked Mike, "can we open it and play it?" "Sure" I SCREAMED!!!!! THAT'S IT!!!!!! Took it home, was life changing ❤️ That photo with that guitar 😯 Just WOW. So every guitar I had was store bought, my '71 Strat had taken a dive, and we had to play Rapid City Stevens High School in late '77, and I needed a guitar, so went to local store there, and had no choice but had to trade even up my '75 Martin D-35 Shade Top for an Ibanez Sunburst Strat copy, gorgeous... but the gig? It squealed like a pig, so treble off on my Marshall Super Lead and the guitar. Never played it then. So a week after the VH release, Feb '78...so I stripped that Sunburst and painted it white then taped off for black stripes... but I nailed it, back, I did my own pattern. A year later called Charvel and ordered 2 flat n wide necks from Wayne Charvel himself. "Sorry, don't do the CBS headstock anymore, all Strat necks are Leo timeframe" "Good I like them better" lol So in late '79, instead of painting over the black and white, I simply made another, using the second neck. After getting around 5-6 bodies and a couple more necks, Wayne asked me to be Charvel Midwest contact etc, sell outta my shop, "Carlin Guitarwerks". That lasted a few months till Grover took over, n I got a letter, still have, from Grover beginning of '80. "We have decided to go ahead and make production guitars, and to continue our partnership as Wayne had started, so we are requiring 6 full production guitars a year" But by then, I had made every guitar Eddie had created. Only for me too, never sold one. So Eddie was huge to me, and I'm still devastated!! 💔
Something else I haven’t heard mentioned yet was Ed’s backing vocals. Spot on harmonies with Michael and Wolf while playing. Try the harmony for Dance the Night Away while playing. Or Jamie’s Crying!
So whoever listens to this, go and listen to the Steve Rosen interview (just Google it as David Black suggests: "Steve Rosen" Van Halen Interview; it's the one called the "lost interview"). After that, listen to Van Halen 1, of course. But then listen to Van Halen II ... a couple of times. Maybe four or five. Hell, keep it on the permanent rotation if you want. I'm on my third listen and my fellow dudes ... I'm tripping *hard*. So much of what you'll hear on VH II, damn, you'll feel UNBELIEVABLY more in touch with it now - not only because of what the tone guys here talk about, but ESPECIALLY because of what Eddie talked about in his interview with Rosen. IT'S LIKE A TIME MACHINE BACK TO WHEN VAN HALEN II WAS RECORDED. Oh my God I haven't felt like this in 35 years, I used to be this way when I discovered anything new about EVH ... a new magazine article, hell, anything back in the pre-internet days ... I'm just blown away by this. Do it, you KNOW you won't regret it. Light Up the Sky is playing right now and oh man I'll quit now or I won't be able to stop typing ... EVH forever. May you rest in peace, you guitar god with no real peer, one of the kindest souls we've ever known of ... that was in anything like a similar spotlight. His finger work in tone was one thing but how can anybody make up that many tunes that sounds so awesome and hook you right on in never a dull moment like you said summertime fun rock and roll

I still love Different Kind Of Truth, Ed's guitar sound is epic, but Alex's drum mix.....spectacular! "Me Wise Magic" and "Can't Get This Stuff No more" from Best Of - Vol.1 to me, had the best of their 90's sound with DLR up front, GREAT F-ing tunes!
Dann huff I took 2 days off school to try and learn the intro to "I'm a believer " when I was a kid never forget how much you're music means to me still the best
It's been 2 months and it's still hard to deal with. I was 16 when that first VH record came out, and it changed my life. I got to see VH open for Black Sabbath at Madison Square Garden, and it was as if aliens landed. I have never heard or seen anything like it even 42 yrs later. He completely changed the way guitars got played. He also changed the way guitars got sold. He then changed the way high gain amplifiers were made and sold. He was an industry unto himself. Frank Zappa thanked EVH for reinventing the electric guitar and coming from FZ, that was a huge compliment. May he RIP.
Dave black basically described it how it happened for me as well it was 1978 and i was only 14 My cousin had bought the first record and played me running with the devil and eruption. I was hooked instantly! shortly after me and him saw them at the Philadelphia spectrum open for sabbath.
I was born in Sept of 55 living in so cal. I first saw VH at the old Anaheim convention center in 1975 a something called Cars of The Stars Ed played louder than anyone. I lived 40 miles from Pasadena & when they played in the mid seventies somewhere it made it all the way to another county. After 1978 every party you went to there was someone saying , “ they knew them, partied with them or their sister screwed one of em” It was a running joke all summer
I kept seeing them in small articles in magazines and hearing the whole album at a friend's house ...the very first time is bleary, it's memories of walking past a parked car in a driveway with " Runnin' with the devil" cranking and seeing the video of " You're No Good " on don Kirshner rock concert.....and the movie " over the edge" that had " you really got me " as part of one of the scenes

Dave's right Van Halen ll has the Best tone without a doubt. That album came out three days after my 11th birthday, and my cousin gave me that album as a gift when I seen him.. I played it over and over I couldn't get enough of that tone on D.O.A. blew my mind. Love EVH the Greatest guitarists Ever!
Saw something on the van halen lost weekend contest recently they winners were flown to a VH show in Detroit. I know Dave said his first VH show was the 1984 tour so I wonder if he was at the same show. They presented a cake to the winner on stage so maybe he remembers. My number one favorite tone from Eddie was his first appearance on the David Letterman show when Letterman went to LA for a week. It was right before Roth left the band. David asked him if Dave got on his nerves. He had THE AMP ( from the looks and sounds) and a Kramer. It was the first time I had ever heard him talk. This was before the Internet. #2 is Diver Down. I don't care what anyone says, I love love love that album. His tone was really crisp and still heavy but clean. It was a really melodic album. I think Little Guitars, the part with the singing is Dave's best lyrics. It's one of my favorite songs ever. I always wondered if it was about a real girl and what she must be like if DLR fell in love with her. Everything about Hang em High is epic. I definitely agree with Pete about the sophistication in Eddie's playing especially his rhythm playing and his chord progressions. All the other bands and players took from him one aspect of his playing. No other guitarist plays rhythm like him. The High Life stuff is my #3 for tone. I'm so glad the full songs are out there.When I was younger , I rented the BETAMAX copy and ran my vcr thru my stereo, it had Beta Hi Fi, and I recorded all of the snippets onto a cassette. I remember playing it for people and they were blown away because no one really knew about it. And there was only one song from him on the official soundtrack. And SEDUCE!!!🤘🤘🤘🤘If you know, you know! David Black and Chris Holmes were my favorite parts of that movie ( Decline part 2). And Jeff Duncan's Jackson Kelly! 🤘

Another strong point of Van Halen: MICHAEL ANTHONY! His super tight playing, his huge voice and his enthusiasm and personality! I saw them just once live (‘Right here, right now’ in ‘92 I think) but I’ll never forget that concert!! They were all in top form at the time. Sammy was also the best singer they ever had/ could ever have. IMO David was more of a showman, be it a very good one. He also loves and knows a lot about all kinds of genres in music besides rock, wich I like a lot. They were a great American rock band! 🖖
Love old Van Halen, have not listened to an entire album since Diver Down. 1984 was a kiss of death for the band for me. Roth and all of his Barnum and Bailey bullshit really turned me off. When Sammy joined it was never Van Halen, just Sammy with a new gig and Eddie as his guitar player. Saddened me when Eddie died, one of the best of all time and I do not see anyone inspiring generations of players like he did. Thanks for all the music and memories, RIP EVH.
I am the same age as Michael and I discovered Van Halen the same way as him. Starting by 5150 (a gift from my mother who new nothing about music), and only after I discovered the first albums. I never stopped listening to Van Halen.
I am watching this episode on TH-cam on my tv and love the show so much I wanted to share this story I was playing guitar in my punk rock band and was invited to play a giant keg party in rock port mass it was a massive party pick up truck full of kegs filled with ice and 2 kegs opened and running on the tailgate massive barbecue pit full P.A. Several bands playing Van Halen 1 had just come out and there was a young kid there his name was Archie Eddie Archie no one would let him play I was hanging out talking to him trading licks with him and he had all of Van Halen 1 down so finally I talked to the sound man I had a brand new Les Paul Custom Marshall half stack jcm 800 MXR distortion + With rubber cover over the volume knob so you could turn up volume with your foot Archie took my Les Paul and Played the entire Van Halen one every lick every trick the whole record by himself and about 300 hundred people sat on a giant lawn and watched Archie play Van Halen 1 by himself at was amazing to see ✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️
I am so lucky that VH was my first concert in 1979 and Ed played the Bumblebee. Like David Black said, they played everything from the first 2 albums...except “Women In Love”. I have never seen photos of Ed playing Franky from the second album tour. That’s news to me. I am with Dave Friedman about fave guitar tones. For me VH ll, then 1984 and then Fair Warning. I agree with Dave about the Phase 90 reissue it being quite right.
Since most of us are guitar nerds and it was not mentioned in the pic dave black took of eddie playing the frankie in 79 that neck on it is the original Charvel neck from the bee built by Grover jackson and karl sandoval when he was still employed by grover, Ed used that neck on frankie for part of the 79 tour then swapped it over to the guitar that was carved to look like a dragon biting a snake.(there are a few vids of this guitar here on YT) The Black/yellow(bee) was the only 100% Charvel eddie played. the rest were lynn ellsworth boogie body parts. The Bee body got a different neck and years later was buried with dime but the dragon biting a snake guitar with that neck are still around.

VH was my first concert I went to, pretty sure it was their first headliner concert and it was amazing. The riffs EVH played went on forever and everyone loved it, such a frenzy took place, crazy crazy. I was only like 14 lol it was so wild. I’m so honored I got to see them. RIP greatest guitarist ever ❤
I was in 10th grade when my classmates were talking about this new Van Halen band. Of course when the album dropped, I was blown away just like everybody else.
Many thanks for this. It gives us a chance to grieve and remember a truly nice person, with faults like all of us but I miss him so much. He was always smiling and was so generous to a lot of people. I know he rubbed off on our great brother Jerry Cantrell. Big ups to Dave Friedman, I’m just a dumb idiot guitar player born and raised on the banks of the Kzoo River. You guys are the best and help keep me a little bit more sane.

Agree that it's great, no doubt. IIRC Eddie said in one of the mags that he was going for Clapton on that lead (not sure exactly what he meant there - sound? style? - although it certainly is a slower lead, yet of course that fits that specific song perfectly).

2:24:44 I hear Ed's power in the legato of Spanish Fly. When I was 24-ish I could almost get that snappy legato on a nylon-string (where it is so hard, it is almost percussive) but now, (age 50-ish), I can practice forever and just not get there.
I hear you. When I turned 35 my entire body started falling apart slowly. That was nearly 20 years ago, you'd think I'd have dwindled away to nothing by now lol ...
I seen Dave Black at a Sponge concert about 10 years ago. I recognized him from the Decline of Western Civilization documentary. And, I bought the Seduce album......
I'm totally in agreement with Marc for favorite records, Fair Warning and 1984 is THE TONE to me. I was a little surprised VH II was Friedman's favorite for tone.

I agree with the tone on 1984. I think the tone he achieved in Panama is utterly perfect for him, and couldn't have been topped, even by the man himself (although of course it's VERY CLOSE! lol).

I don’t understand this bagging on David Crosby. So he didn’t care for Van Halen, so what? He’s an older guy, he was born in 1941, he grew-up in the era before rock’n roll, he started his career before Jimi Hendrix, etc. He was probably more into The Grateful Dead or The Allman Brothers than this deedely-deedely-wang-wang stuff that landed in 1978, and all that hard rock/metal that came later. He probably didn’t care for EVH anymore than he cared for Motörhead or Pantera ... so what!?

For me Van Halen came out in the perfect time because nothing was changing in the Genre ,all the bands were playing Priest and smelt over stuff ,and then I heard VanHalen for the First time and they really got Rock back into the charts because Like David Black was saying they wouldnt play BlackSabboth or Deo or anything to me worth listning that wasnt 10 or so years old RIP Eddie Van Halen you woke everyone up and chasing your playing and sound !!!1
I was born in 81 so my generation was a bit late for VH, as I got a bit older I definitely remember hearing the music and it was amazing but I had nothing to compare it to to know how amazing it really was until I got older. Especially as a guitar player, as I got older, how could you not idolize Eddie? His death hit me, similar to how hard Chris Cornell's death hit me since I was really a child of the grunge era.
I saw VH 1st, 2nd, 4th tour and was a both shows they filmed at the New Haven Colosseum for Live without a Net. Crazy. 1st night, Eddie's wireless went down and had to use a cable!
Talk near the end on the EVH Phase 90 and as Dave said “gotta have the old one”. That’s very true. I have the old Phase 90 and the EVH. To me the difference is the old one has a natural compression, boost and wet saturated quality to it. A shot of nitrous.
Apparently the MXR ‘74 Custom Shop Phase 90 is spot on but I never tried it. I have the Custom Shop version with LED, and that is the EVH circuit in a orange case, and the script button pushed-in (the button is inside, the circuit board says EVH) ... avoid. Otherwise the Whirlwind Orange Box is very very close to the old original I have. Whirlwind is run by the people who created and ran MXR in the ‘70s. Nothing is exactly like the old ones ... same goes with the Flangers. Some MXR reissues are very hot or miss, some are plain terrible, others are better.

Frank Zappa loved and respected Eddie and got him to teach Dweezil who was obsessed with ED When Frank died Ed was THE 1st first to call with condolences and to offer any assistance. He did the same for Chris Cornell Guitarist here Pete Thorn when Chris Passed He got Allan Holdsworth signed to Warner to introduce Allan to a wider audience There are multiple stories of his kindness to fans and just random strangers showing that we didn't just lose one of THE Best Guitarist / Musician Ever but a pretty awesome decent human being. He was the 1st to mod his guitars in such an extreme way chasing tone, popularising the Super Strat - Humbuckers in Strat style guitars, Waxing Pickups, Variac on his amp and did his first 2 albums with the original Fender Whammy which led to the creation of the Floyd Rose Whammy Bar and later he developed the D-Tuna addition to go from standard to drop D Les Paul Said Ed, him & Leo Fender are the only guys who know how to make guitars His 5150 Amp is still THE go to amp and sound of Modern metal, Gojira use the EVH 5150 His Rhythm Playing was funky, tasteful and rockin’ and his songwriting is the reason his loss is affecting grandparents, parents, kids and all ethnicities alike as Van Halen songs will live forever. ICB Eddie V H is GONE ! BUT HEY, so are most of my friends ! He lived to be a senior citizen, 65 (?)......I only saw him once, as the opening act for Black Sabbath in 1978 @ Nassau Coliseum, GREAT SHOW ! and Truth be told, they did not blow Sabbath off the stage, NO, they did not ! They both ROCKED ! It WAS A GREAT ROCK SHOW, THATS IT !
His passing has really hit me hard. I had the privilege of meeting and talking with Eddie 4-5 times. He used to come into my Families Liquor/Convenience store which was right down the street from his Coldwater Canyon house. He was always so humble and kind in our conversations. He even gave me one of his guitars on one of his visits. On another occasion my cousin and I who also worked at the family store saw Eddie at a gas station filling up his Black Lamborghini, we walked over to him and he remembered us from the store my cousin had a beer in his hand and Eddie asked if he could have a swig so we had a beer with Eddie while he showed us his Lambo. He always came across to me as someone completely unaware that he was a rockstar no ego whatsoever. I think what makes his passing so hard for me is knowing that he had the biggest childlike heart that just loved to create but was also so kind, gentle, humble and a decent human being. So many stories are coming out similar to mine showing Eddies kind, giving nature.
Damn! He *gave* you a guitar? Pics or it didn't happen, dude! Nah, I'm so jealous of all that lol ... congrats, seriously. I'd loved to have met the man once, much less all the rest. I have one of his picks (friend was a bouncer at one of the later Van Hagar concerts) - he gave it to me, knowing what a fan I was, and I cherish it to this day, knowing that even if it spent it's life in a box, it was at least NEAR enough to Eddie to have been considered for use by my guitar hero for 40+ years.

People love to hate on DLR but I was always amazed that he could write melody and sing over those killer EVH riffs.
If the singer had of been too over the top it wouldn’t of worked.
Even they said DLR had a LOT to do with the sound of the early days, I believe it and I'm a much bigger fan of the DLR era. I do recognize that Eddie had some great guitar parts on the Van Hagar albums though. Always loved the keys too that he would break out now and again.
David Blacks descriptions of that time in history was so vivid and similar to my own.. I felt like I stepped back in time... Thank You!
I'm a bit younger (was 10 yrs old at Van Halen I's release), so I was in the second or third wave lol... I've heard countless fans recount similar stories, and read countless accounts from guitarists who were mightily influenced by the album, and the stories all sound nearly identical! I would have loved to have been maybe six or seven years older at the time so I could have *really* appreciated that momentous time... But I'll take what I got, obviously, and listen to/read all those stories with a big smile, thankful that rock guitar/music was blessed with such an incredible presence. RIP, Edward Van Halen... I am a still a long time guitarist ,now in my 70's. I never met any of V.H. but really liked the music. I liked Sammy's vocals more than Dave R. He seemed to be a dick ,very overly egotistic . I've been playing guitar since 1964. Mr. Black was accurate with his memories of how playing out live in Michigan and the Mid-Western states was. In 1964 & onward we played a lot of high school gigs,college gigs, a while later. Right after picking up a guitar I started gigging at private parties, we played at C./ O. railroad halls and a lot of other small local places. I remember fondly a lot of the early rock bands. My high school was going to book a bigger band for graduation , We wanted to book Hendrix & the Experience, or the Doors, B.O. C. and/or other hard rock acts. Us guys wanted to book harder rock acts . But the females had control of the school booking ,along with the teachers. They overruled all of us guys and booked 'The Grass Roots" in 1968. We were really bummed. But After graduation I started playing all over Mid Michigan. Bars , lounges , Colleges, parties . Anywhere we could play. After a while in early 1970's, we hit the road and started playing in other states. THEN THE DRAFT , that broke up a good band. Nam destroyed a lot of good musicians and bands. Anyway I finally retired from playing out about 5 years ago. My back was really bad and a lot of medical problems became severe. So My life in music came to an end. I lasted until my age ran against me and my health became more and more problematic. I still play(practice) at home most every day still sitting down . I still have some chops at almost 71 years old. But life never stops we do. Listening to V.H. is a big big part of my road trips I'll never forget, That and sleeping and playing at Holiday Inns, or Ramada Inns all over the mid-west Area. Sleeping in Band rooms there, and eating at Rally's restaurants all over. Sorry for running on ,probably pretty boring to all your other younger players.

Van Halen hit when I was 12 and I'd just began guitar lessons a week or two before coming home one day to my rocker teenage sister telling me, " Sit down and listen to this !" . She put the Van Halen I Lp on our parents new stereo. Kids, HIFI STEREO was mastered in the 1950's, so we heard the same quality you hear now. Actually better imo... but the beloved 8-track tape was probably just as popular for VH I and VH II. Van Halen debut-'I' was a black 8-track and Van Halen II was a white 8-track. I bought *Van Halen - Women and Children First* on cassette in 1980 right before Summer camp...7 weeks of Summer Camp in Leelanau County MI, on Lke Michigan. The whole boys camp combined had maybe a dozen tapes, but the new VH WACF was the hit, most borrowed, and what we cranked at wake up "AND THE WILL ROCK". Second was *Black Sabbath Heaven and Hell* , then *The Cars Candy O* , *Rush All The World's A Stage* .

Yes a thousand times.......the context of Eddies playing and sound is extremely important to his innovation and extraordinary style. Im 55, I was 13, just becoming a guitar player. Jenson speakers.....we all had them. 😂 I love it. Eddie was a legend to our generation, and deservingly so.
Our band had just got done playing a Winter Party at Omaha Roncalli High School in February 1978, a brrrr COLD February, i was the oldest in the band, in 78, I was 26. Our band radio was on the whole trip back to Sioux City Iowa. And this song blarred, WHOA? This a new Kinks? It was You Really Got Me! DJ didn't say...Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. that next Monday I went to my favorite record store, the owner I knew. I asked if he knew, "there's a new record that has that song on a sticker, contains the hit, You Really Got Me ..have no idea who they are". I bought it and asked Mike, "can we open it and play it?" "Sure"

That photo with that guitar 😯 Just WOW. So every guitar I had was store bought, my '71 Strat had taken a dive, and we had to play Rapid City Stevens High School in late '77, and I needed a guitar, so went to local store there, and had no choice but had to trade even up my '75 Martin D-35 Shade Top for an Ibanez Sunburst Strat copy, gorgeous... but the gig? It squealed like a pig, so treble off on my Marshall Super Lead and the guitar. Never played it then.
So a week after the VH release, Feb '78...so I stripped that Sunburst and painted it white then taped off for black stripes... but I nailed it, back, I did my own pattern. A year later called Charvel and ordered 2 flat n wide necks from Wayne Charvel himself. "Sorry, don't do the CBS headstock anymore, all Strat necks are Leo timeframe" "Good I like them better" lol
So in late '79, instead of painting over the black and white, I simply made another, using the second neck.
After getting around 5-6 bodies and a couple more necks, Wayne asked me to be Charvel Midwest contact etc, sell outta my shop, "Carlin Guitarwerks". That lasted a few months till Grover took over, n I got a letter, still have, from Grover beginning of '80. "We have decided to go ahead and make production guitars, and to continue our partnership as Wayne had started, so we are requiring 6 full production guitars a year"
But by then, I had made every guitar Eddie had created. Only for me too, never sold one.
So Eddie was huge to me, and I'm still devastated!! 💔

Hell, keep it on the permanent rotation if you want. I'm on my third listen and my fellow dudes ... I'm tripping *hard*.
So much of what you'll hear on VH II, damn, you'll feel UNBELIEVABLY more in touch with it now - not only because of what the tone guys here talk about, but ESPECIALLY because of what Eddie talked about in his interview with Rosen. IT'S LIKE A TIME MACHINE BACK TO WHEN VAN HALEN II WAS RECORDED. I still love Different Kind Of Truth, Ed's guitar sound is epic, but Alex's drum mix.....spectacular! "Me Wise Magic" and "Can't Get This Stuff No more" from Best Of - Vol.1 to me, had the best of their 90's sound with DLR up front, GREAT F-ing tunes!

It's been 2 months and it's still hard to deal with. I was 16 when that first VH record came out, and it changed my life. I got to see VH open for Black Sabbath at Madison Square Garden, and it was as if aliens landed. I have never heard or seen anything like it even 42 yrs later. He completely changed the way guitars got played. He also changed the way guitars got sold. He then changed the way high gain amplifiers were made and sold. He was an industry unto himself. Frank Zappa thanked EVH for reinventing the electric guitar and coming from FZ, that was a huge compliment. May he RIP.

My cousin had bought the first record and played me running with the devil and eruption.
I was hooked instantly! shortly after me and him saw them at the Philadelphia spectrum open for sabbath.
I was born in Sept of 55 living in so cal. I first saw VH at the old Anaheim convention center in 1975 a something called Cars of The Stars
Ed played louder than anyone.
I lived 40 miles from Pasadena & when they played in the mid seventies somewhere it made it all the way to another county.
After 1978 every party you went to there was someone saying , “ they knew them, partied with them or their sister screwed one of em”
It was a running joke all summer

I kept seeing them in small articles in magazines and hearing the whole album at a friend's house ...the very first time is bleary, it's memories of walking past a parked car in a driveway with " Runnin' with the devil" cranking and seeing the video of " You're No Good " on don Kirshner rock concert.....and the movie " over the edge" that had " you really got me " as part of one of the scenes

That album came out three days after my 11th birthday, and my cousin gave me that album as a gift when I seen him.. I played it over and over I couldn't get enough of that tone on D.O.A. blew my mind. Love EVH the Greatest guitarists Ever!
VH2 was the first VH album I bought, it is the one that got me into VH, as much as VH1 is brilliant, there is stuff on VH2 that is more original.

Saw something on the van halen lost weekend contest recently they winners were flown to a VH show in Detroit. I know Dave said his first VH show was the 1984 tour so I wonder if he was at the same show. They presented a cake to the winner on stage so maybe he remembers. My number one favorite tone from Eddie was his first appearance on the David Letterman show when Letterman went to LA for a week. It was right before Roth left the band. David asked him if Dave got on his nerves. He had THE AMP ( from the looks and sounds) and a Kramer. It was the first time I had ever heard him talk. This was before the Internet. #2 is Diver Down. I don't care what anyone says, I love love love that album. His tone was really crisp and still heavy but clean. It was a really melodic album. I think Little Guitars, the part with the singing is Dave's best lyrics. It's one of my favorite songs ever. I always wondered if it was about a real girl and what she must be like if DLR fell in love with her. Everything about Hang em High is epic. I definitely agree with Pete about the sophistication in Eddie's playing especially his rhythm playing and his chord progressions. All the other bands and players took from him one aspect of his playing. No other guitarist plays rhythm like him. The High Life stuff is my #3 for tone. I'm so glad the full songs are out there.When I was younger , I rented the BETAMAX copy and ran my vcr thru my stereo, it had Beta Hi Fi, and I recorded all of the snippets onto a cassette. I remember playing it for people and they were blown away because no one really knew about it. And there was only one song from him on the official soundtrack.
And SEDUCE!!!🤘🤘🤘🤘If you know, you know! David Black and Chris Holmes were my favorite parts of that movie ( Decline part 2). And Jeff Duncan's Jackson Kelly! 🤘

They were all in top form at the time. Sammy was also the best singer they ever had/ could ever have.
IMO David was more of a showman, be it a very good one. He also loves and knows a lot about all kinds of genres in music besides rock, wich I like a lot.
They were a great American rock band!

Love old Van Halen, have not listened to an entire album since Diver Down. 1984 was a kiss of death for the band for me. Roth and all of his Barnum and Bailey bullshit really turned me off. When Sammy joined it was never Van Halen, just Sammy with a new gig and Eddie as his guitar player. Saddened me when Eddie died, one of the best of all time and I do not see anyone inspiring generations of players like he did. Thanks for all the music and memories, RIP EVH.
I am the same age as Michael and I discovered Van Halen the same way as him. Starting by 5150 (a gift from my mother who new nothing about music), and only after I discovered the first albums. I never stopped listening to Van Halen.

I am watching this episode on TH-cam on my tv and love the show so much I wanted to share this story I was playing guitar in my punk rock band and was invited to play a giant keg party in rock port mass it was a massive party pick up truck full of kegs filled with ice and 2 kegs opened and running on the tailgate massive barbecue pit full P.A. Several bands playing Van Halen 1 had just come out and there was a young kid there his name was Archie Eddie Archie no one would let him play I was hanging out talking to him trading licks with him and he had all of Van Halen 1 down so finally I talked to the sound man I had a brand new Les Paul Custom Marshall half stack jcm 800 MXR distortion + With rubber cover over the volume knob so you could turn up volume with your foot Archie took my Les Paul and Played the entire Van Halen one every lick every trick the whole record by himself and about 300 hundred people sat on a giant lawn and watched Archie play Van Halen 1 by himself at was amazing to see ✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️
I am so lucky that VH was my first concert in 1979 and Ed played the Bumblebee. Like David Black said, they played everything from the first 2 albums...except “Women In Love”. I have never seen photos of Ed playing Franky from the second album tour. That’s news to me. I am with Dave Friedman about fave guitar tones. For me VH ll, then 1984 and then Fair Warning. I agree with Dave about the Phase 90 reissue it being quite right.
Since most of us are guitar nerds and it was not mentioned in the pic dave black took of eddie playing the frankie in 79 that neck on it is the original Charvel neck from the bee built by Grover jackson and karl sandoval when he was still employed by grover,
Ed used that neck on frankie for part of the 79 tour then swapped it over to the guitar that was carved to look like a dragon biting a snake.(there are a few vids of this guitar here on YT)
The Black/yellow(bee) was the only 100% Charvel eddie played. the rest were lynn ellsworth boogie body parts.
The Bee body got a different neck and years later was buried with dime but the dragon biting a snake guitar with that neck are still around.

The riffs EVH played went on forever and everyone loved it, such a frenzy took place, crazy crazy. I was only like 14 lol it was so wild. I’m so honored I got to see them. Agree that it's great, no doubt. IIRC Eddie said in one of the mags that he was going for Clapton on that lead (not sure exactly what he meant there - sound? style? - although it certainly is a slower lead, yet of course that fits that specific song perfectly).

2:24:44 I hear Ed's power in the legato of Spanish Fly. When I was 24-ish I could almost get that snappy legato on a nylon-string (where it is so hard, it is almost percussive) but now, (age 50-ish), I can practice forever and just not get there.
I hear you. When I turned 35 my entire body started falling apart slowly. That was nearly 20 years ago, you'd think I'd have dwindled away to nothing by now lol ...
There’s the Boss GE-10 but people forget sometimes about the 10 band half or micro rack Boss made as well. Guys from Slayer used those

I'm totally in agreement with Marc for favorite records, Fair Warning and 1984 is THE TONE to me. I was a little surprised VH II was Friedman's favorite for tone.

I agree with the tone on 1984. I think the tone he achieved in Panama is utterly perfect for him, and couldn't have been topped, even by the man himself (although of course it's VERY CLOSE! lol).
What guitar is he playing in the studio recording of Panama? Someone here will know, I'm sure of that.

He’s an older guy, he was born in 1941, he grew-up in the era before rock’n roll, he started his career before Jimi Hendrix, etc.
He was probably more into The Grateful Dead or The Allman Brothers than this deedely-deedely-wang-wang stuff that landed in 1978, and all that hard rock/metal that came later.
He probably didn’t care for EVH anymore than he cared for Motörhead or Pantera ... so what!?

Kinda had to laugh when dave talked about the amp on vh 2 sounding like it‘s about to explode because thats exactly what i always think when listening to it.
For me Van Halen came out in the perfect time because nothing was changing in the Genre ,all the bands were playing Priest and smelt over stuff ,and then I heard VanHalen for the First time and they really got Rock back into the charts because Like David Black was saying they wouldnt play BlackSabboth or Deo or anything to me worth listning that wasnt 10 or so years old RIP Eddie Van Halen you woke everyone up and chasing your playing and sound !!!1

I was born in 81 so my generation was a bit late for VH, as I got a bit older I definitely remember hearing the music and it was amazing but I had nothing to compare it to to know how amazing it really was until I got older. Especially as a guitar player, as I got older, how could you not idolize Eddie? His death hit me, similar to how hard Chris Cornell's death hit me since I was really a child of the grunge era.
I saw VH 1st, 2nd, 4th tour and was a both shows they filmed at the New Haven Colosseum for Live without a Net. Crazy. 1st night, Eddie's wireless went down and had to use a cable!
Talk near the end on the EVH Phase 90 and as Dave said “gotta have the old one”. That’s very true. I have the old Phase 90 and the EVH. To me the difference is the old one has a natural compression, boost and wet saturated quality to it. A shot of nitrous.
Apparently the MXR ‘74 Custom Shop Phase 90 is spot on but I never tried it. I have the Custom Shop version with LED, and that is the EVH circuit in a orange case, and the script button pushed-in (the button is inside, the circuit board says EVH) ... avoid.
Otherwise the Whirlwind Orange Box is very very close to the old original I have. Whirlwind is run by the people who created and ran MXR in the ‘70s.
Nothing is exactly like the old ones ... same goes with the Flangers. Some MXR reissues are very hot or miss, some are plain terrible, others are better.

most people don’t know the King Edward was a bi-racial half Asian / half white Immigrant and that his lifelong friends were the black kids who stood up for them when they came to the US. As they were ‘half breed’ immigrants who couldn’t speak the language. And look at where they ended up man! A definitive American Dream story.
Eddie played the solo on Michael Jackson’s Beat it, re-arranged it so it sounded more ‘Rock’ and introduced Michael to a wider audience for free.
Eddie buried Dimebag Darrell from Pantera with his original Bumblebee Guitar when Dime’s life partner Rita asked him to make a Copy Ed said “an Original deserves an Original”
Vinnie Paul ( Pantera ) Dimebag’s brother says the last words his brother said to him was Van f+*in Halen’ their nightly ritual before hitting the stage.
He gave Jerry Cantrell 5150 Stacks after touring with Alice In Chains and the last concert he went to was TOOL and a TOOL fan asked him to take a picture of the fan in front of Tool’s stage and he did, The fan had no idea who Ed was and Ed was chill with it. / no ‘don’t you know who I am’ attitude.
Frank Zappa loved and respected Eddie and got him to teach Dweezil who was obsessed with ED When Frank died Ed was THE 1st first to call with condolences and to offer any assistance.
He did the same for Chris Cornell Guitarist here Pete Thorn when Chris Passed
He got Allan Holdsworth signed to Warner to introduce Allan to a wider audience
There are multiple stories of his kindness to fans and just random strangers showing that we didn't just lose one of THE Best Guitarist / Musician Ever but a pretty awesome decent human being.
He was the 1st to mod his guitars in such an extreme way chasing tone, popularising the Super Strat - Humbuckers in Strat style guitars, Waxing Pickups, Variac on his amp and did his first 2 albums with the original Fender Whammy which led to the creation of the Floyd Rose
Whammy Bar and later he developed the D-Tuna addition to go from standard to drop D
Les Paul Said Ed, him & Leo Fender are the only guys who know how to make guitars
His 5150 Amp is still THE go to amp and sound of Modern metal, Gojira use the EVH 5150
His Rhythm Playing was funky, tasteful and rockin’ and his songwriting is the reason his loss is affecting grandparents, parents, kids and all ethnicities alike as Van Halen songs will live forever.
He bravely and quietly fought cancer for 20 years

ICB Eddie V H is GONE ! BUT HEY, so are most of my friends ! He lived to be a senior citizen, 65 (?)......I only saw him once, as the opening act for Black Sabbath in 1978 @ Nassau Coliseum, GREAT SHOW ! and Truth be told, they did not blow Sabbath off the stage, NO, they did not ! They both ROCKED ! It WAS A GREAT ROCK SHOW, THATS IT !
