Well George Harrison developed his technique quite a lot over time. Especially later he was able to play his solos with a much better technique. John Lennon is also very underrated as a guitar player. Although I agree with Paul it's not like they still sounded as they didn't improve on their technique over time. I think he really should have pointed that out. The Beatles were also less about solos but about complex chord structures. They used quite unusual chords for a pop bands.
Ok so I have a Paul Gilbert story. Back in 2012 a few friends of mine and I attended the winter namm show. PG was playing at a very small hotel bar one of the nights. It was a killer show. One of my friends who is also a massive Gilbert fan was getting absolutely hammered during the show. Lol. The minute the shows over Paul runs off stage and out the main doors and up a flight of stairs. My friend says “let’s follow him! Maybe we can get an autograph or something.” I said “uh No. that’s a bad idea.” After a few more pleas from him I caved. We go up the stairs and at the end of the hall was a conference room. We could hear talking from inside. My friend opens the door and low and behold there is Paul in the back end of the room about 15’ away standing in his underwear. The moment my friend sees him he blurts out “Dude it’s Paul Gilbert just loud enough that he hears him. At this point my friends got his back to PG and I’m facing him. After PG finishes getting dressed he heads towards us and I’m thinking he’s gonna be super pissed and have us escorted out or worse. The moment he gets to us he says “Hey guys did you guys see the show?” We are both shocked he wasn’t angry by us being there. We proceeded to talk about the show and his gear for a few minutes and then took a few pics and went on our way. Just goes to show how great of a guy PG is. I’m sure any other rock star would have had our asses kicked and thrown out.

Paul Gilbert is the kind of teacher that makes you want to sit down and practice something you hate just so you can go back and show him the cool thing you turned it into the next week.
I saw a video of him taking the pentatonic and dropping the 3rd and replacing it with the 4th. All up and down the neck too, not just a box solo. So, like in A minor pentatonic he dropped the C and added back in the F. I was like, wait, you can do that! Lol. Guy is just awesome.
He's actually a genius. The way he sees guitar is so different. His tip about playing the same thing until you get tired of it and your ear craves something else is genius.
He talks about that in his 'artist works' lessons. "Bullet proof" playing he calls it. When you can play it no matter what because you've played it so many times.
@@trackerbuckmann1627 i like it when he's does a rhythmic low groove / riff, round and round then bounces between the groove and leads, tightens up ya playing nicely.. maybe that's what you meant, or similar at least, we can all agree he has great exercises i think!
Paul is an “international treasure.” I suffer from back pain and this hour and a half with Paul is better than any painkiller or chiropractor session. I also thank this kid for spotlighting treasures like Paul for today’s audiences.
Great interview. Paul is not just a monster when it comes to guitar, it's his child like enthusiasm and openness to everything that is music that truly makes him an inspiration. He's all of us at 15 years old discovering players and songs, as if it's the first time. Somehow he's been able to capture and never lose that moment for his entire life. Love it.
What always amazes me is that Paul can play long complicated pieces, all from memory and NEVeR misses a note. Perfectly fretted and picked, it’s superhuman.
I love Paul, he reminds me of an ADD kid explaining what he learned at school. Of course that kid would have to be doing the equivalent of a masters in astrophysics for the metaphor to full work. The sheer joy is just infectious.
I honestly just learned about PG yesterday and I am SO INSPIRED to not just play more like him, but to BE more like him as a person. From wise sage to guitar villain, he has RANGE!
I love it when Paul Gilbert randomly busts out into song on guitar... dude has become so melodic on top of his shred chops he's had forever in the past number of years
Paul Gilbert is a genius. His groove is out of this world, and it's a shame he is starting to lose his hearing because his trained ears are impeccable.
Oh he's had hearing problems for a loong time, I think I read that's why he used to wear those big ear muffs on stage to protect his hearing. I doubt he'll be losing it completely any time soon :)
I owe to Paul Gilber the ability of starting to pick up English words by ear watching his instructional videos back in the day. Instead of focusing on the licks I would focus on the language and look on the dictionary certains words that I couldn't understand by ear. He speaks very clearly, at a slower pace and without an accent. So thanks, Paul.
@@OriginalPuroSame here, Final Fantasy 7 and Resident Evil 1 especially, back in the late 90s, were my english teachers. Then music too of course, much better than school.
This is by far the most interesting and entertaining interview I have even seen. Paul Gilbert is my current guitar obsession. He’s really technically good but there’s so much SOUL to all of his stuff. And his love for guitar is so inspiring. I’ve learned a lot from this video and really want to improve my guitar abilities
Paul Gilbert was the most influential person in my guitar technical progression back in the day. I had his videos Intense Rock I and Intense Rock 2. He made learning and playing difficult things humorous and fun and that was key for me. Thanks Paul!
Thanks for having P.G. on "Guitar Villains"...and just letting him "RUN"! Always entertaining AND instructive!! I've been "living" in the "Instrumentalized Iconic Vocal World" for some time; so I'm TOTALLY "in the choir" he's preaching to when it comes to that concept...as well as the "Killer Vibrato" thing. BOOMER BENDS FOREVER!!
Copped a Paul Gilbert Signature Guitar and the tone is incredible, buttery cleans soaring leads, Paul really knows how to get a T H I C C B O I tone, with his playing style in his fingers but his guitars and gear also!
My third comment on the same video. Thank you, Tyler, for bringing this wonderful video to us. I can only imagine what an honor it must have been to interview Paul. I can, also, only imagine it must have been exhausting; if you ask Paul, he will tell you. What a gift. Thanks, man!
it's so sad that paul's losing/lost a bunch of his hearing, he's one of my favourite guitarists, especially of those best known for shredding. he seems to know every song ever written, proof of what can be done if you spend all time mastering what you do. will you get phil x on here some day?
It's pretty heartbreaking that it's the primary reason behind a change in his playing style, especially since he fought to keep it a lot harder than most musicians. He obviously knew it was already starting to happen as early as his late 20s to early 30s and started religiously wearing protective hearing gear.
I love Paul Gilbert because you can tell by watching him that he loves the guitar. He just absolutely loves it no matter what he's doing as long as he's guitaring. Every moment he's holding one he's having the time of his life.
Such a great interview-ee!!! Paul is so in tune with what is happening musically and he has such a great way to express it both verbally and on guitar. I learned to paint from someone who was just like him but spoke in the language of line and color.
Tylers look of awe and wonder reminds me when I had the honor to get an in person lesson from Paul a few years back. Amazing teacher who made you feel comfortable even though you are jamming with someone who could literally melt your face.
I absolutely love Paul Gilbert interviews. He's so entertaining, goes off on so many interesting tangents and he seems like a genuinely nice guy. Awesome interview dude.
Great interview! It was very honest of PG to be so forthright w his hearing loss. As a hearing aid specialist who deals w folks w hearing loss daily make sure to protect your ears, y’all! Earplugs help a ton and take good care all!
The saddest thing is Paul took so much better care of his hearing than most rockstars. He was pretty religious about using protective hearing gear as early as his late 20s to early 30s. Sadly I think he knew this was coming his entire career.
My take away... There is no right and wrong. Good is good. Everyone is unique. You can make great music at any stage of your skill level. There’s something to appreciate everywhere. Just play, just make music. It’s ok if you aren’t a shred person, keep trying, but be yourself. Sometimes less is more. I love this man.
O noticed there was a fridge in the back, so is Paul Gilbert's living room a studio packed of gear or does he have a fridge in the studio? Either way is awesome! xD
Paul Gilbert is at the top of my list as the most talented guitar player ever and he is the one professional musician that I'd wish to get taught by. The dudes knowledge on music and songs is other worldly , dude might just be an alien lol
He was born at one of luckiest times to grow up with music. He’s old enough to remember the Beatles when they were still a band. He was about 5 to 8 when 70’s Bubble gum/glam (Raspberries/Sweet/T-Rex & Alice Cooper, Bowie) ruled the rock airwaves. He was about 10 going into a being young teenager when 70’s hard rockers like Zeppelin, Aerosmith Sabbath & KISS were giving way to new super skilled rock bands like Boston, UFO & Van Halen. He got a full ear of Punk and New Wave and then the rebirth of British metal with a renewed Thin Lizzy, Black Sabbath, Scorpions & Judas Priest. Which then of course introduced new rockers like Iron Maiden, Dio, Ozzy, Def Leppard. Loudness and Anthem in Japan. And in the US, bands like Motley Crue, Quiet Riot, Dokken, WASP, Armored Saint, Black and Blue, and Lizzy Borden… And of course Paul’s Racer X. Every time you hear Paul Gilbert’s interviews and playing, what your hearing is his distilling of all his growing years of listening to hard rock and 70’s AM pop. I’m from Paul’s era. I grew up in L.A. worked at shows when he was with Willie in Black Sheep m, right up to the Racer X show at the Country Club when they essentially co- headlined with Anthem from Japan. We even opened for Racer X early in their club days having no idea who they were or what their significance to hard rock would be some 30 years later. Every time Paul does an interview, I can’t wait to watch it because it always leaves a big smile on my face and many good memories about growing up in the same era that he did, and of all the music that has worked its way into my memory banks, down into my heart and then back out thru my fingers. This was one more of those moment’s.
By far my favourite episode. Paul's always been part of my guitar journey and his unwavering enthusiasm for the guitar is so incredibly infectious. His knowledge and ability are, pretty much, unsurpassed. I'd give anything to have ears like his and I've not lost any of my hearing. Thanks for this episode Tyler, pretty sure it's one I'll be re-watching.
Paul is so cool never thought this interview Been like this I'm telling you Tyler by far this is your best guitar villains episode yet yes even over your Steve Vai episode
Hello from Ireland. Went to see Paul Gilbert on a rainy nite in Dublin some years ago. Twas the "Get out of my Yard" tour and me&friends got to meet him. He was an absolute gentleman and happy to chat. Sound as a Pound. Great fun had in this interview! Loved it.
The difference between this and the Vai interview was that we didn’t know where Vai was going while he was answering questions. This time Gilbert didn’t know where he was going while answering questions but always made it fun and informative to watch.
Man, 'I Am Satan' is also one of my fav of Paul's. It's so unique in the way that until the middle it sounds like an ordinary love song, but ends up with an eerie-sounding progressions, and spooky noises. God, I love this song so much. I've never head anything like this before and after.
I love Paul's energy and passion for the guitar, it's very addictive ! Anybody else think of Rabbi Glickman from Seinfeld when you see Paul in that hat and glasses ?
Literally 9 minutes in and Paul's advice already shined a light on improving as a guitarist. Never thought I could sing and play but his advice about playing the bass line first somehow made it click for me. Here I am singing and playing Ob-la-di Ob-la-da at 4am now.
I met Paul and Billy giving out demo cassette tapes for Mr Big at Fairview Mall in Kitchener Ontario. They were standing out in front of the KMart at the food court doors. The cassette was covered by a cardboard cover with what would end up as the album cover on the front. It was essentially an EP and had To Be with You and three other songs. They talked with us for probably 10 mins and I asked Paul just a pile of guitar questions. He told me two things - listen to everything and practice through repetition. I think they were going to open for Cinderella or Slaughter , would have been summer 91. I think it was Cinderella cause I know I won tickets for that show on the radio. They were great and really just regular dudes.
Genuinely one of my favourite interviews with Paul Tyler, was lucky to do a masterclass with Paul about 10 years ago in Dublin before his show with 4 other guitarists, back then two things stood out about his playing, melody & rhythm based even in the solos he was conscious of tying it in with the groove of the tune. Plus he's always been super humble & great sense of humour too. Made everyone feel at ease.
This is my favorite interview I've seen of the wonderful Paul Gilbert. Great job just gently guiding him and letting us all absorb his humor and wisdom and inspiration.
I absolutely love listening to Paul talk about the guitar and music in general, let alone listen to him play. He's one of the greatest ever. Genius on every level
And all my years of playing I never really warmed up to Paul Gilbert and his playing, after this interview, I have really grown to like him, he is such a great guy with lots of information that is common to me. you did a great job on this interview bringing out so much information and all the other guitar villain interviews. Good work!!!
PG is such a phenomenal guitarist, song writer, and teacher. It is great to see once again how lovely he is as a person too. Great interviewee, great interviewer.
His positive energy is like inspirational fuel. Great guy - especially in later years. I never liked the technical shreddy stuff earlier on - I did realize he was brilliant, but it didn't mean anything to me. What he does now does mean something. Maybe it is just because I don't have the processing speed for the fast stuff, I don't know, but that's how I feel about it.
Thank you for doing this with PG, man!!! 1 hour and 25 minutes? I could watch Paul plays and rants all day. Such an inspiring guitar player, musician and human being. Always. I just wonder why this one doesn't get as many views as quickly as your other videos but hey quantity doesn't always represent quality, right? 😁😁 Cheers, man!! Thank you!!
OMG, he asks Paul what's his #1 guitar right now and he goes and pulls out an exact copy of my first "real" guitar. Ibanez Roadstar II in the purple burst finish with gold hardware. The only difference is mine has the black plastic pickup covers on them. Bought it new in the mid 80's when I was 16 and played the crap out of that thing. it's in need of some work and has been in it's case for the past 7 or 8 years. Seeing Paul pull that out was really cool.
People get really wrapped up in how technically gifted Paul is, which he absolutely has amazing chops, but the thing that really impresses me about Paul is his musicality. A lot of guitar players are more guitar players than they are musicians, but everything Paul does and the way he thinks is always music first. He's so fucking good and inspirational!
I saw Mr. Big open up for Rush in Baltimore in 1990. I wasn't a fan until I saw them live. Paul did his solo (drill included) and he blew me away! Been a fan ever since.
Wow Paul is a great human being , intuitive expansive guitar player, amazing , he has the same qualities of Eddie Van Halen, both are always playing guitar , interviews with guitars , and always smiling and truly happy playing guitar . Of course both musical geniuses , amazing guitarists
This entire interview is an extremely inspiring guitar, and music in general, lesson. Paul’s long answer/rant to the last question is the single most best and deepest guitar lesson I’ve personally ever had 🖤🤘
I love Paul Gilbert. He is my favorite guitar player. Not because of his speed, which is pretty quick even by today's standards. Not because of his technical mastery, which is insane. But, because he has such incredible joy when he plays. He nearly glows with childlike glee when he is playing. I may never master my instrument the way he has, but I always want my playing to contain that kind of joy.
"A robot's always going to win" Paul said. I found humor in that as I thought "Paul, the engineers are trying to teach the robots how to sound more like you." I love this guy.

Loved it.
"You don't have to elaborate as much as you did in previous comments..."
There was an attempt.
Paul Gilbert is my guitar hero and this will never change : humble, talented, generous, encouraging and so joyful ! Thank u so much to both of u🇫🇷👍🏼🍒
The difference between this and the Vai interview was that we didn’t know where Vai was going while he was answering questions. This time Gilbert didn’t know where he was going while answering questions but always made it fun and informative to watch.
Probably the best interview I’ve ever seen. Thank you both!
Man, 'I Am Satan' is also one of my fav of Paul's. It's so unique in the way that until the middle it sounds like an ordinary love song, but ends up with an eerie-sounding progressions, and spooky noises. God, I love this song so much. I've never head anything like this before and after.
Paul is one of the most fun people to both watch play and talk. Such a cool human.
Paul Gilbert is so cool. But the truest thing he said during this, was that surprisingly the "Lego" movies are actually really freaking good.
Thank you for sharing this man. it's been a great honor to watch one of my fav guitarist shares knowledge & what he's currently into.
I love Paul's energy and passion for the guitar, it's very addictive ! Anybody else think of Rabbi Glickman from Seinfeld when you see Paul in that hat and glasses ?
Yes sure did classic
Gilbert is from another planet. Amazing.
Literally 9 minutes in and Paul's advice already shined a light on improving as a guitarist. Never thought I could sing and play but his advice about playing the bass line first somehow made it click for me. Here I am singing and playing Ob-la-di Ob-la-da at 4am now.
The touch and the dynamic of his notes is really from another planet! Not only a matter of playing fast but the sound!...Really a Maestro!....
Paul is my favorite guitar villanous hero of all time, such a legend 🤟
That was fun. Thank you. I remember listening to Paul Gilbert while fretting 2 bass necks for Billy Sheehan.
The tail on Mecha-Godzilla looks like Paul's pick drill!
This is awesome! Paul is such a great artist and person.
What a treat! Joyful! Oh man made my day!
Thank you both
Rich Beato is sweating bullets at the thought of all these copyright strikes😏🤣🤣🤣
Paul Gilbert is da man. MONSTER player but really down to earth guy.
This is my favorite interview I've seen of the wonderful Paul Gilbert. Great job just gently guiding him and letting us all absorb his humor and wisdom and inspiration.
Tyler: cool I’m gonna have Paul on and I’ve got a structure it’s gonna go smooth
Paul: hold my beer
I absolutely love listening to Paul talk about the guitar and music in general, let alone listen to him play. He's one of the greatest ever. Genius on every level
He will always be my favorite guitarist from this OG shredders era. You know he loves the instrument
I've been taking lessons for over 3 years from Paul.....my playing...has improved by immense levels....he gets the best out of you...
Tyler, the entire guitar universe is SO jealous of you right now, for having Paul Gilbert all to yourself for an entire hour and a half!! Fantastic!
And all my years of playing I never really warmed up to Paul Gilbert and his playing, after this interview, I have really grown to like him, he is such a great guy with lots of information that is common to me. you did a great job on this interview bringing out so much information and all the other guitar villain interviews. Good work!!!
Paul's Total Recall of songs and licks is unreal.
Plus the fact that he can replay most of them perfectly after 20+ years instantly ...
Cheers, man!! Thank you!!
He’s one of the greatest guys at making you excited about playin
Yeah!! At about 25 mins, he has to scat something to remember how to play it. 🎶
This has been my favorite Villain!! Thanx Paul & Tyler!
Pablo is the gift that keeps on giving
I saw Mr. Big open up for Rush in Baltimore in 1990. I wasn't a fan until I saw them live. Paul did his solo (drill included) and he blew me away! Been a fan ever since.
41:44 I've never thought why I love Steven Tyler so much, that's because he sings like guitar along with Joe Perry...My mind is blown.
I freaking love Paul Gilbert's playing! Great job having him on, Tyler! Thank you!!!
This is truly a gift to the world
I was obsessed with Paul’s technique and musicianship for a good while! One of the great masters! Long live PG! Thanks for this interview!
You can tell that he loves that ibanez since he made it his Spotify profile picture
PG is the OG
Great episode. Paul Gilbert is a character, and an amazing musician. I really dig the Guitar Villains series. Rock on y’all.
"A robot's always going to win" Paul said. I found humor in that as I thought "Paul, the engineers are trying to teach the robots how to sound more like you." I love this guy.
@Music is Win YESSSS!!!!! This is one of the Guitar Villains I have been commenting and asking for! Thank you so much for doing this!!!!!
It might be a most educational guitar villain ever
LOVE PG!!!! Thanx!!
My daydream is to someday randomly jam with Paul. I live in Portland and I always have my head on a swivel.
If Paul really is losing his hearing, that sucks. He’s not even that old. Cool guy, awesome player, always willing to drop knowledge.
Especially to someone who obviously loves all music. I'd hate to loose mine, all the music I'd have to just remember...
One of the best Gilbert interviews evar!! Thank-you!!
