Where do the F1 boxes sit as opposed to the junior categories? I saw the Supercars coming out of the beginning of the pitlane at Melbourne after quali and was wondering how this all works. Are there enough pit boxes for every F1 team and junior category team? Or do they have to share some times?
Also, does this affect how the F2 and F3 support races are chosen? I know F3 has like 30 freaking cars or something per race. So I assume a shorter pitlane wouldn't make it feasible to have F3 be the supporting race for certain weekends.
@@ccramit so basically there's a support paddock around the circuit for example: Silverstone, Yas Marina and other tracks with 2 pitlanes the cars get stored there pre race, and tracks like Momaco have the cars around about the circuit.
The Supercars at Melbourne had their own pit boxes that were near the pit entry. The S5000s there had a support paddock on the opposite side of the pit straight. Access was via a gate in the debris fence. I don't think the S5000s ever used the pit lane.
I did the pit lane walk in Melbourne and basically, the Supercars sat towards the back end of the pit lane near the entry and had their own pit boxes, whilst the F1 cars sat at the front of the pit lane near the exit. This is probably different on every circuit though depending on their capacity.

Theres afew good overtaking points on the track, T1, T6 after the long right hander if a driver is brave enough to stick it round the outside, T11 (?) after the back 'straight' (easy to go side by side and nice heavy breaking zone)
Exactly, anyone who has raced there on a sim at a fairly high level knows how hard it is to pass. Even with DRS the straight is really short for F1 because of how slow that last corner is. Adding a SA GP at Kyalami would be a great thing, but not really because it'd offer great racing on Sunday.

I live so close to this track I can hear the GT3 cars going round, from my house, when they're in town. Hearing F1 cars on that first Friday afternoon is gonna be EPIC!
What I'm seeing is an absolute necessity for a roster. Have some permanent tracks (Spa, Suzuka, Interlagos, Monza, Silverstone, COTA) and then a bunch of rotating slots that change year to year to keep things fresh. We don't really wanna be pushing for even more races every season. Things would become impossible to manage at that point.
Add Monaco to that list which, I know, gives a boring race but probably has the most demanding and rewarding Qualy in the whole calendar plus all the history and prestige the circuit has. Also, it keeps the possibility of winning the Triple Crown alive

This would be epic! Also love that the clip at 3:56 when talking about the announcement of a Chinese Grand Prix it's actually a clip of San Francisco 😂
South Africa definitely needs a home race, although I think that home race should’ve been made into something like a street circuit in Durban (where all the attraction is toward year end) , but something grand unlike the A1GP which was just a disappointment all round
As a South African I am concerned that the estimated payment to host a GP in South Africa will be about 90% of the total government sport budget. Given than my two sports (karate and squash) do not qualify for one cent of that budget, I have concerns that there are more pressing needs in this country reeling in massive debt than a Grand Prix.
Gonna be honest. I live in South Africa and at the moment I think it would be hard for the government or guy to produce the funds. We have just had a kind of cyclone which has caused massive devastation and to repair roads and so on will cost a ton. But I hope they will bring a race to 🇿🇦.
It's possible they hope to make enough profit to make it worth it. If they fill the stands and book out surrounding hotels then it'll make back the money then some

As a South African🇿🇦 I'm very happy to see us representing the continent on the F1 calendar, As long as the government doesn't have to foot some gigantic bill it should be smooth sailing
This track is so much fun to drive, not convinced it'll produce great racing in its current layout though. As much as turn 15 slaps, I think straightening it out and creating another DRS zone before the start/finish straight could be a quick fix. As a proud South African, when F1 arrives, best believe I’ll be there from Monday to Sunday with my orange t-shirt blasting “Super Max” all day long
this would be amazing, as a south african myself i rode around on a few motorcycles in 2017+2018 and can confirm it is a really fun track to hoon around. almost wiped out at corner 12
There are starting to be a lot of races
There should be contracts between two races
Like, lets say, 2023 south african gp, 2024 Las Vegas Gp, 2025 south african gp again... etc.
This would be fliippen incredible 🔥🔥there is a massive fan base for F1 here in SA🇿🇦would be so stoked to watch a race live and in person
Im a South African from 1979 WDC Jody Scheckter's hometown, and i cannot stress how excited I am to hear this news. The last time we had a GP was 2 years before I was born so I finally have hope I can attend a race in future.
This should have been the priority over Las Vegas.
@@gfraser92 Hopefully for the team members sake F1 continues to enforce the mandatory 2 week summers break for all the teams but if F1 continues to add tracks to the racing schedule something will have to give.
I'll tell you one things, I'm from South Africa and there is a huge interest and fan base for F1 here.
I legit manifest the Kyalami GP every race weekend. Seen a lot of great races and events on the track, it would be an absolute treat to have F1 here. And I'm sure money won't be an issue, we've got hidden coffers everywhere lol. COME TO KYALAMI 🏁
Uploaded the exact same subject video 20min ago lol Truly a WTF(1) moment. And yes, I would love to see Kyamali back.
I'd love a race on every continent (Antarctica would make for an interesting race), and this would be a beautiful addition. I worry about the calendar length though. The races on the streets of the US are not ones I look forward to, I'd prefer a proper circuit.
As someone who studies in SA I’d definitely attend
Kyalami is one of my all time favorite tracks. Really interesting track for GT racing. Not sure how it would flow with F1 in terms of overtaking, though. Definitely provides great wheel to wheel action with GT3, but they are much slower (than F1) and it's a more balanced class anyway.
As a south african I WOULD LOVE TO SEE A RACE HERE. there are so many f1 fans here it would definetely get attention and i think it would be great for the sport! We have a lot to offer here, thank you for shedding light on our epic circuit!
Personally, I think a street circuit in Cape Town with table mountain as the backdrop would be awesome. I don't know how feasible that is though.
yes 100%
the roads around the centre and to the foot of Table mountain are undulating asphalt of the highest quality...and WIDE to boot!
It would be amazing to see them on the flyovers too 😁
@@weedfreer lol and if you fcuk up the apex coming down the mountain, you tumble to a fiery death.
I think that would be great but the drivers might have other ideas xD
@@scroopynooperz9051 details details....it could be worked on 😅
I come from south africa so to see this makes me very happy
As a South African, I'd blow all my savings just to see a home race🙈😂! Real bucket list stuff!🪣🇿🇦
Kylami was always one of my favourite tracks to watch world superbike race ta as a kid. Would love to see f1 go there
Missed opportunity to use the new "volume up" graphic during that lap!
Awesome video matt! Can't wait for South Africa to be on the calendar. Fan from South Africa!!! 🇿🇦
This is great, Africa definitely needs a race, then it can truly be a world championship.
As a South African I am extremely excited
I can just imagine every single place latifi could crash
South African, born in 1998, so of course I've never had the opportunity to watch a GP at Kyalami. It would be a dream come true🥺
in 2024 and 2034 are the 90th and 100th anniversaries of the SAGP
I want it to be going there if its a good track and not just because its in Africa
I have had enough of "Hey , we are going to X place ,get excited !" only for the tracks themselves to be underwhelming
Same way that Im pessimistic about Miami and Las Vegas...
That onboard gives me a kind of COTA-meet-Hungaroring vibe, in a good way.
This is great, but i am worried that they sre bringing in too many tracks.
The us should not have 3 races. We cant lose good and/or classic tracks for new ones for money purposes.
And what about alternating races. How bout theres only 1 usgp but we switch each year between the 3 tracks. Keeps the exclusivity and we have more tracks
It'll take Sochi's spot. You're right, they said the US will have 4.
This would be epic! Also love that the clip at 3:56 when talking about the announcement of a Chinese Grand Prix it's actually a clip of San Francisco 😂
Is it just me or do the KYALAMI and BUDH GP layout look scarily similar .
I'm also a South African and it would be awesome to race at Kayalami, it's right around the cor er from my house! Thanks WTF1 for making this video!!
I really hope it will come we NEED a race in Afrika
South Africa definitely needs a home race, although I think that home race should’ve been made into something like a street circuit in Durban (where all the attraction is toward year end) , but something grand unlike the A1GP which was just a disappointment all round
As a South African I am concerned that the estimated payment to host a GP in South Africa will be about 90% of the total government sport budget. Given than my two sports (karate and squash) do not qualify for one cent of that budget, I have concerns that there are more pressing needs in this country reeling in massive debt than a Grand Prix.
Absolutely great track to watch, but barely anywhere to overtake
To be WDC and WCC, I believe their needs to be 1 race on each continent (except Antarctica)
An Antarctic circuit reminds me of that stunt red bull did
Wow, thats really racist towards those pinguins in Antarctica. They want to see F1 aswell, i guess. 😜
@@hanswurst6712 😂, we had a taste of what an Antarctica race would be like…2020 Turkish GP
I would be so happy if the Kyalami GP is back on the F1 calendar! The race track is just 15km from my home! :D
If they fill the stands and book out surrounding hotels then it'll make back the money then some
I wouldn’t miss this for the world 🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦 I hope it gets on the calendar soon.
It's gonna take a lot of domenicali's crew
There's nothing a hundred men or more could never do
We need that race now in aaAAaafrica
To make a real world championship we need the contineeeeee-eeeeeeeee-eeeeeeend
totototoottoom
Toto - Africa
No Mikey No that was so not Right guy- Africa
Would love to see this race! My only worry is that in its current state the track feels a bit narrow for the current size of the cars
There's a 95% chance that Latifi or Stroll will spin their cars in the off camber turn 1 at least once that weekend lmaoo
I don't think Latifi will survive in F1 after this year. They mention that they no need his
money.
South African track reminds little bit Brazil Interlagos🧐
we are definitely not "battling" covid 19... Kyalami is an awesome track and deserves to be on the calendar.
So I’m from South Africa and just in the high school part of my school (grades 8-12) there’s about 120 f1 fans. There’s about 1100 kids in the school. In my opinion I think the circuit will have more than enough funding. Plus I’d really hope there is such a GP 🙂
That's not a bad # to be honest. The ratio is decent
Kyalami '92 was the first time I ever saw F1 on the TV and I was hooked immediately. Where have 30 years disappeared to?
This is the only one of the new tracks that I have actually looked at and liked
That is a brilliant idea. Kyalami was and is a CLASSIC racetrack.
I totally thought it went the other way around. Good circuit, though, I like the subtle changes in elevation and the flowing second and third sectors.
The track is actually amazing. Went around it sitting on the passenger side of a Audi R8 V10 during the festival of motoring 2 years ago
Man I love this track from the first time I drove it in Assetto Corsa, I think if it gets a little widened in some areas it would be an awesome venue to have some F1 races.
As a South African I personally cant wait for F1 to race here
SA GP will be brilliant feels like a good return to form for the WORLD championship
With the constant growth of F1 Street Circuits ANY pure racing track is a welcome for the non casual F1 fans👏🏽🤲🏽 Love to see it, hope to see it very soon🙏🏼
Yas!
That fast right hander (turn 5?) looks soooo exciting. And that rollercoaster looking hairpin that’s going up while breaking and then going straight back down looks amazing as well! Such a cool circuit!
The minute and a half break from Matt excitedly shout-splaining to me was sheer bliss. Thank you, Matt.
Yes South Africa 🔥😍 track is so close to home 🔥
Couple weeks ago I saw this track was in Assetto Corsa Competizione and feel in LOVE with the it! Its a blast in a GT3 car I cant imagine how it would be in a F1 car. We NEED this track in 2024
I'm patiently waiting to witness a Formula 1 Race at Kyalami, haven't experienced something like it since the A1GP races
Also South African. Kyalami is maybe a 2 hours drive from where I live.
Would love to see F1 live.
As a big African F1 fan this will be so great I'm an Zambian and I can make the trip there 🤗🤗🤗can't wait
I am so stoked about this
kylami has always delivered with gt racing.
Its a great track and for f1 to be a truely global sport we needed to return to africa asap
Glad to see my Country getting some love
Hey SA F1 Fans! It's your neighbors in Botswana, we're just as excited as you are 😄
Would be great but they really need more spots for spectators. Watching the GT3 this year, almost half the track has no place to sit and watch
Kyalami is a treat to drive. In my mind its a version of Spa with the undulations and the dipping chicane which reminds me of eau rouge.
As a South African🇿🇦 I'm very happy to see us representing the continent on the F1 calendar, As long as the government doesn't have to foot some gigantic bill it should be smooth sailing
This is brilliant 👏🏻
For almost a century, F1 operated GRAND PRIX races 🏁 👌🏻 😀 👍🏼 😎 🙌🏻 🏁 in South Africa.
This is a very welcome return💯
Kyalami is a great track :) I remember racing it in an old 90's game.
You guys are like a drug that helps with the withdraw symptoms between races. Quite a service your providing, love it.
definitely here or it!! having races on all continents would be so cool!!
I love South Africa.
Try to visit as often as possible. Would prefer Cape Town but I’m excited at possibility.
Please!!! As a South African I have never been able to attend a GP. Please F1 make it happen!!
As a person from sweden, i Will say this track looks sick. And i think with the new cars it Can be very fun to watch
As a South African myself... I know that F1 is HUGE at home !!! It always makes me so proud of where I come from when I hear things like this 🇿🇦🇿🇦
Awesome ! The steering wheel, halo and sky all look amazing there !
Absolutely has to come back
This track is so much fun to drive, not convinced it'll produce great racing in its current layout though. As much as turn 15 slaps, I think straightening it out and creating another DRS zone before the start/finish straight could be a quick fix.
Then we can have Sepang-style switchback shenanigans from turn 13 to turn 2
I love watching the 9 hour race around this place, definitely some good racing o be had. (And some crazy weather sometimes too.)
