    Decisions
    1. You must name and reject your fear.
    2. You must reprogram your brain with different thoughts.
    3. You must rebuild your brain by taking action.

    I love this talk. Very inspiring woman. She owns who she is and does not make any excuses nor is she apologizing. If you really hear what she is saying you will understand that she is discussing the obstacles that she had to overcome.
    I love how so many of you are very threatened by her. Interesting. You need to think about why.

    If I got it right :
    1. You must name and reject your fear. " I am afraid of _________"
    2. You must reprogram your brain with different thoughts. "I've solved other problems, I can solve this"
    3. You must rebuild your brain by taking action. " I will take classes, more training, educate myself on what I dont know, and find a mentor(s) who can help"
    I LOVE IT!

    1. Name your fear and reject it.
    2. Reprogram your brain with new positive better thoughts. Our brains are like computers you must take out the "fear" virus.
    3. Tell yourself you can make a big difference. Think positive of the outcome.
    4. Find Mentors that support you and can help you.
    5. Rebuild your brain. Exercise your brain with confronting fear develop direct opposition to your fear.
    This creates new pathways in our brain.
    6. Believe in your abilities and skills when confronted with self doubt or obstacles.

      goldsilverandiamonds I've noticed a pattern with some Ted Talks where they reject and ignore negativity, replacing it with synthesized positivity, but not a lot of folk using things like ACT, or Mindfulness, or acknowledging their negativity as being something normal. Its not the greatest message.

    • @goldsilverandiamonds
      @goldsilverandiamonds 9 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Louis Bullock I think as most people get older they start understand negativity is a toxic state of being. Why flood your mind with negativity when we can choose how to look at and react to life in a positive way.
      Most negative thoughts and emotions are like junk food they may initially satisfy us but long term use and indulging them takes a toll on our health and actually harms us.
      Would you choose to feed yourself junk food and crap if you had a choice and the money to eat the greatest, freshest and healthiest foods? I would eat the best, put the best food into my body so why not emotional do the same. Put in the best thoughts and images into your mind. I am not saying become Pollyanna but consciously direct your mind to the things that are good, healthy, beneficial and positive.
      We are in many ways wired to be negative and fearful and have to work to be positive. It's not easy at first, but I think you'll find that those that do and practice it have better, healthier more fulfilling and economically successful lives.
      In reality you are the architect of your own life you can build your foundation with dirt (negativity) or you can build it with steel and concrete ( positivity). You can use scraps of wood or the finest lumber. You can build your house with cheap, crappy foreign products or you can build it with the best, custom made and designed products. So why not use and invest in the best when clearly the payoff and investment is worth it. I think you get the idea.

    • @iamlouisbullock
      @iamlouisbullock 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      A fair sentiment, well written. Agreed, negativity can be harmful, and in large amounts isn't great, can make one feel unbalanced.
      I'm speaking more from the work that Russ Harris has done on Mindfulness and accepting that a bit of negativity is still okay, no need for one to dismiss it completely.
      Otherwise dismissing negativity altogether can breed people who aren't truthful to themselves about how they actually feel.

    • @goldsilverandiamonds
      @goldsilverandiamonds 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Louis Bullock I don't think people have a problem with having enough negativity in their lives. We are bombarded with it constantly.
      I don't disagree the ability to live with negativity is ok. But living with some negativity and or letting or giving into negativity so that it is predominate in your life is not a wise idea.
      What people are really deficient in is finding happiness , current contentment with who and where they are in life. And also feeling and being positive about life and their future.
      No one needs help being negative. We all need help and encouragement to be rationally positive and at times irrationally positive.
      We are what we focus on. We move in the direction we focus on we attract what we focus on. If we are not conscious of what we focus on we easily get led down the path of negativity
      . It is important that we really think of what we want in our lives and from our lives. The ability to think and be positive should be high on everyone's list. This is not easily to do it takes effort. Negativity on the other hand is easy it takes little effort. In my opinion negativity should not be high on anyone's list.
      Have you ever watched the movie the Secret? or learned about the Law of Attraction? If not you might find the movie interesting. You can find a the full movie on You tube. You can find many videos on the Law of Attraction too.
      As I get older I realize there is great truth to the Law of Attraction from years of personal experience. It's important to guard your mind and feed it healthy thoughts and images. If you don't someone else or society will feed it with junk, negativity, lack and hopelessness among other things. It's is important that you learn to pull the weeds that invade your garden (mind).

    She started off in poverty and failing most of her math and science courses. Showcasing her achievements to make little of those around her was not her intention. It was to inspire others to make the most out of their environment and opportunities just as she did at her lowest.

    A very valuable internal question I ask myself to get over fear, "What is the worst that can happen?"
    Many people only think of failure as a short term negative, when in reality the long term benefits of fear and failure can have LIFE CHANGING positive outcome with this perspective. Live, learn and grow stronger.

      +james dean True some people don't likr others people's success so they just make themselves miserable. Her speech literally saved me so many time when I felt incapable of doing things. This woman is great.

    • @isillor529
      @isillor529 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Carlos Vasconcelos don't be so faint of mind as to accept emotional persuasion or stylish rhetoric over legitimate fact. This "speech" is merely her saying saying this is my opinion I have accomplished all these things so it must be true. When in reality it remains, only speech. Certainly motivating, but scientifically illegitimate. You mistake depression for vision of what is true, and self help bullshit.

    • @Nicodemosfreitas
      @Nicodemosfreitas 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      james dean We choose to believe in whatever we want. It does not mean I'm accepting it as absolute true. A fact you can not change is that she is successful and it did work for her, she want to help other people using her life story, by the way a few people can do it. What about you? What can you tell me about your life that can be inspiration for others or even for me? Maybe you don't like self help, it is called pride. Pride is the worse character a person can have. I was in your place before, so I don't judge you. Hope one day all negative and bad eyes you have towards others can change for something good.

    • @isillor529
      @isillor529 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Carlos Vasconcelos all we know is that she was successfull. We don't know how she got there. My story could not inspire people, no. But that matters little. Inspiration is in many ways false hope. Thinking you can achieve something you can't makes you waste time and nothing else. I don't hate self help becuase of pride, but rather becuase its just talk. It makes you feel good and empowered, but leads to no results. Much like a new years resolution. You may feel inspired, but you are no closer to "reprograming your brain". So the speech is wasted.

    Her fear was being a woman who could not succeed at math. She not only named it but gave it a classification called mathaphobia. Her environment growing up was full of dangers and challenges to her self concept, yet she found a formula to overcome them.She "reprogramed" her brain, telling herself that she was educated with sufficient personal resources and networks of mentors to overcome the fear. Then she confronted the fear directly by creating behaviors or actions in direct opposition to the fear, causing her to get busy and redefine her success. Pow! Fear overcome. Now, she can launch all kinds of rockets. And, she wore that outfit like an olympian and strode the stage like a goddess. Olympia LePoint is firing on all cylinders, and anyone can learn from her example, even men.

    This brought back memories, of my children doing homework and whenever they couldn't work something out, I would hear my husband trying patiently, to explain the problem and then how he came to the solution, and at the end of his speech, he would always end it with "hey, it's not Rocket Science",and then "Remember, anyone can do whatever they want to do". Well at the age of 51 I am going to give it a go, hope it works for me, the idea of reprogramming my brain is inspiring to say the least!

    I found this TED talk very interesting! I've never listened to a rocket scientist speak before as I have no interest in the subject, so I've never been interested in anything like this. However, this TED talk beautifully captures the importance of overcoming fear. It is about so much more than rocket science. It is so inspiring to know that even the smartest people out there have their own fears and struggles. They have to overcome these obstacles just like we do.

    So much of your success is to do with your conditioning and state of mind. You need to learn how to learn first and have the rest of your life in order. This woman not only made it from incredibly humble backgrounds, but shes excelled in subjects that we think are only for those who are just naturally gifted through hardwork. What a story when Im hearing struggling with Chemistry!

    I really enjoyed this talk! As someone who often lets fear get in the way of new experiences and opportunities, this really hit home. I particuraly enjoyed the last part, in which she talked about taking direct opposite action against the fear. I definitely think this is something that could be applied in my life, especially in terms of graduating college soon.

      I am also someone who often lets fear get in the way of new experiences so this talk really meant a lot to me too. Post-graduation is something that does spark some fear in me because I am unsure of the future but I also see myself using her ideas in my own life.

    Fear is NOT a virus and doesn't need to be eradicated. Fear is a useful instinctual reaction. What often MAY not useful is WHEN it is triggered and what emotional state it leads to, and the latter two elements should be changed.

    Summary (sans all the drama and backstory)
    1) name and reject your fear (for her, fear of failure)
    2) reprogram your brain with different (read: empowering) thoughts (i.e. remove the virus in your operating system [brain])
    3) rebuild the neurons in your brain by taking action in direct opposition to your fear
    The one things she wants you to learn today is that you can do all the above and reprogram your brain.

    You have to acknowledge and accept the "fear" BEFORE you release, let-go or reject it OR it will consume you whole. I feel she wasn't FULLY aware of the process, but she was so determined that once she acknowledged that obstacle-fear she diverted her attention on HOW TO DO THAT CERTAIN SKILL AND PERSISTED CONSISTENTLY!!

    There will always be someone who will be negative. I think she is an inspiration and not full of herself. Education is a powerful thing, but having the ability to focus and act on what's possible is good. All things are possible and rejecting fear is too. Be positive people, she's going to continue to do and be. Try to emulate that positive vibe.

  • @noahowens6133

    Fear can be used as a negative or a positive, if fear shuts you down to life it serves a negative purpose if you use fear to get into the present moment and use it to overcome fear than it serves a positive purpose. We needed fear and pain to evolve in the past, it is the main power behind all animal evolution. It is what is powering mankind into spiritual beings now. When you know the ultimate truth of life, you no longer need fear and severe pain, and they will be discarded in the transition into your next body. The ultimate truth of life has been revealed. Google *_Truth Contest_* and check out the top entry. Nothing could be more important or worthwhile than checking the truth for yourself.

    This is by far one of the best TEDx Talks that I have seen thus far. Olympia not only shared the 3 steps to reprogram our brains to overcome fear which by itself in a monotone manner would have been sufficient. She also showed us how to effectively communicate. How to talk in a paused clear way while articulating every word. She handled perfectly the great and confident motions in platform. Starting from the engaging beginning to catch everyone's attention and get everyone engaged by applauding the enactment of a rocket launching. While sharing that she made it from the below average to become a great rocket scientist. Great job Olympia. You are an inspiration.

    As someone who wants to go into a career where rejection is something I'll face everyday, this TED talk was extremely enlightening to listen watch. I think being able to reprogram your brain to expect rejection and fear to happen and welcome it is so difficult but it leads to a stronger and more confident mindset, which is important to realize. I also loved that one of her points was "name your fear and reject it", there's something so visceral about that statement and it really resonates with me as someone with a lot of anxieties and fears.
