Coming from someone who's sold a 2011 550i with the N63 to buy a 2007 335i with the n54 and an Audi A5 with the 3.2, this is true. You can either be the person to save the car from the grave, or be the one to seal it's fate.

I've had my 01 subaru impreza 2.5RS and that car has been a tank. Original engine lasted 250k with only 1 set of head gaskets due to coolant/oil leaks. So the head gasket drama is very real. It took plenty of track time, back road time and commuting and engine was solid. I did maintain it with the best parts I could and it's treated me well. Naturally at once the engine started making a little noise I decided to 04 STI swap it, have the engine built from bottom up, new everything on its way in and a month after swapping then entire drive train it was back on track and hasn't skipped a beat. The car is as reliable as you maintain it. Maybe my car is an anomaly but in my experience Subaru's are reliable.

Been satisfied with my two Subarus. My ‘03 Legacy OBW with the EJ251/5MT has been pretty solid and has held up well with everything I’ve thrown at it (low and high speed off roading, SCCA RX races, spirited backroad driving, etc.) got about 230,000mi on it now and everything on the car works great, it’s my daily too. My other one is a ‘95 Legacy with the EJ22E/5MT and that thing is a tank. When I bought it it had been sitting for a few years, and then a few months later when I went to get it running, all it took was a new alternator and a jump. I bought this car to beat the crap out of it and just mess around with it, and it’s done everything I’ve thrown at it and still runs like new. It lived a rough life before I got it too, but it’s a 300,000mi right now with no problems.
So, I’d say from my experience that Subarus are tanks.

I hope one day you do a video on lesser known build platforms. The 1990 - 1994 Mazda Miata and the Mazda Protege LX models in the US shared the same 1.8 BP-ZE motor. In Japan those same Proteges (aka Familia) came in turbo charged versions the 180 hp awd GTX sedan and 210 hp awd 323 GTR hatchbacks. They were meant for Group A rallies and were monsters compared to the Miata in terms of power and traction and the hatchback version was lighter as well. These cars aren't just underrated, they are practically unknown by the car community because of the popularity of the Honda Civic at the time, no one knew that the Protege's iron block 1.8 BP engines were basically built for turbos and went totally under the radar.

    "Cheap.. Fast.. Reliable.. Pick 2"
Edit: And 10000% the previous owner's maintenance is PARAMOUNT above anything else.. It's the only reason I bought my 987.1 Cayman S (older chap who was high up in the Oregon PCA and took his car to the same p-car shop for 8 years).. Then Ohlins R&T coilovers and possibly some Fuchs wheels once the time comes..
As for the elephants in the room (IMS and Bore Scoring).. IMS affects less than 1% of 997.1/987.1 cars.. most cars with the issue have low low miles (the IMS bearing dries out if the car isn't driven regularly).. My car has 85k on it (bought it with 78k), so I ain't sweating this one anymore (I did for awhile though, lol).. The bore scoring, that's a little harder to determine without a borescope.. However one of the tell tell signs is smokey cold start, which I don't have at all.. 0 oil consumption over the last 4k miles (I change it every 5k).. My shop, who's worked on the car for almost 10 years now, says I shouldn't worry and just continue to drive the car, because that's what P-cars like the best..

Im not the best comment on this but it made me realize that even though i want to mod my 2013 Altima 3.5SV, i just do the much needed maintenance and chose to wait till i can get another vehicle.
I decided to work for Nissan and learn everything about my car while i was starting off as a Tech. So i knew a lot of recalls and problems that the Altimas were plagued with but mine never missed a beat. Ive had it for 6 years and when i got it, it was piss poor shape. Now, im glad i took the time to do learn my maintenance, how to fix it if it has problems(Including the dreaded CVT even though i have yet to replace my original one((109k now, 45k 6 years ago))), and know that since i did the preventative maintenance, I wont have problems.
As for mods,....sad to say none. The platform isnt meant to go fast and im fine with that. To me, its a cruiser that needed a decent sound system with subs, aftermarket headlights with a slight JDM look to it and some lowering springs with a decent exhaust note. Its my baby till i get a V8 or something that has a vast aftermarket(Been looking at Mustangs or an ST/RS platform).

It would be wise to keep it stock unless you can either do it yourself or are willing to dump a ton of money into companies that are “tried and true”.

I loved how often I had to shift in the Type RA, which has a shorter 2nd gear than other STIs.. and heel toe was A LOT easier in the Type RA compared to the FK8

Not going to lie. After donut media doing a high budget versus low budget video. I was afraid of what the future may hold for my BRZ (fa24d) coming from two civics, one an '02 LX and then a 2020 EX hatchback. It made me more afraid to be joining the Subaru platform. Especially hearing about the whole RTV situation. Keep in mind, i bought this car for track, daily, and autox. I've always wanted to own a Subaru since I do my best to take care of my things, not just cars. Since I mess around with PCs and build them, I thought I'd give this a go for self confidence on doing mods on my own. I just hope nothing bad happens to her while i do my best to keep her maintained on time and doing mods properly.

Modifying any car is a headache and people should be well aware of the risk going into it. You’re rolling the dice for making the car unreliable especially when it involves the engine. Best thing to do is the standard brakes, tires, suspension (depending), and maybe a modest tune for drivability fuel economy, etc. In the end, these are all road cars and not race cars. A lot of people lack not only lack driver skill but also mechanical skill as well. You gotta pay to play but don’t end up writing a check you can’t cash.

As a Subaru owner I find this... true. every guy that gets their first Subaru thinks their Ken Block and tries to drift it and crashes or throws on that sick cold air intake and doesn't tune it. I think we have some of the worst and best owners, personally I plan out and buy every supporting mod I can when modifying my car, no cutting corners, and tune for everything. Subarus can last, but like their relationships, the owners don't want to put in the work to make it last.

    • @Jez4prez1

lol, what you said is 100% true. Subaru has both some of the worst, and some of the best owners.
I suppose many other car brands do also, like BMW's definately have a large hooligan base in Europe who destroy them, and also excellent owners. But not all car brands are like this. Porsche for example doesn't have that bro class.
Subaru's are cheap + have a big history in rally and motorsport, so it's only natural young people will be attracted to them and hoon around thinking they're Ken Block / Colin McRae, and mod them like clowns. Look at all the crap cosmetic mods people do to them, to give you an idea of how clown some people are. Subaru will always have that segment. But they def have a die-hard fanbase also, who build them extremely well and are very knowledgeable on them. The aftermarket scene and support base is massive. And they are used in many forms of motorsport by serious enthusiasts.

‘BuIlT vS bOuGhT’ is stupid as hell, save money and buy an already modified car, since for most modified cars the price of the car doesn’t increase, normally it’s not more to purchase than a stock version.

    • @M54B30_fan
      @M54B30_fan ปีที่แล้ว

@@169abr It depends. I didn’t specify, but obviously has to be quality parts. Idk about a Subaru but probably 6 months after I bought my e46 zhp and put a $1200 catback on it, I saw another one on craigslist that was $1,000 more than I paid for mine with similar miles, that had an intake, lsd, supersprint catless headers (which are over a grand), catback, and interior screen. It depends, still love my car but had I not had one than I probably would have gotten that one.
A modified car for sale isn’t too bad, I mean it’s not like a stock wrx or bmw or any modifiable car like a camaro/mustang has been used pretty good more or less. But if someone puts money into modifications, has proof of maintenance, there isn’t too much worry. More drastic measures like FI onto a stock NA car, or a cage is a little extreme and would require a serious PPI.

Rod bearings immediately done after I bought it. Otherwise I’m sticking to my American V8’s or the platforms I understand decently well.
