    I worked for Subaru in the early 2000’s. It wasn’t so much the head gaskets, as it was the torque sequence used to torque down the head. The center bolts called for less torque than the outer bolts. A proper fix is to use Fel-pro head gaskets, a good set of head bolts or studs, and to torque all the head bolts to the same spec. I’ve had an excellent success rate with early 2000’s Subarus.

    The early 2000 WRXs did not have the EJ25 (2.5 liter). They had the EJ20T (2.0 liter Turbo). If properly maintained, they last a while. Mine has almost 300K on it (original engine). I have replaced the valve cover gaskets and the timing belt, but not the head gaskets. It does a leak a little oil and gas (need to replace some rubber hose on the fuel line), but never overheats or has any drivability issues.
    The 3.6 Pentastar is quite reliable. Above average, though not the best. It's the 3.8 that's unreliable. Jeeps become unreliable because of the aftermarket mods. If left in stock form, they'll go forever without any trouble. Well, except for some of the transmissions. That's why they switched to the ZF tranny. But my '03 Grand Cherokee has the 545RFE that was used in several vehicles and it works like new at over 215K miles.
    But yeah, that Ford Focus/Fiesta transmission was terrible. I have a couple of friends who were bit by it. 100% failure rate. Every 30K! And Ford KNEW about it before they started selling it! There was a lawsuit about it. For this reason, I can never buy another new Ford. Can't trust them.

The WRX EJ255 and STi EJ257 (both DOHC 2.5 turbocompressed) engines both have the multilayered steel (MLS) head gaskets which are completely fine. The EJ 20's (EJ205 and EJ207) do have thicker cylinder walls than the EJ 25's though but that's not related to the head gasket issue. Note to self: only buy a bug-eye STi with the words "blown head gasket" in the description. Then, rebuild it and tune it to the moon! Good lord. 400whp on a bug-eye STi is nuts. I'm curious what your compression ratio is, if you have forged pistons, the type of head studs you're using, if you sleved the head bolt holes, your boost pressure, and if you're running e85 or not. If so, how you fuel it being a daily.
      I daily a turbo miata with 251whp. The compression is 9.1:1, it's boosted to 17psi, has forged rods, but stock pistons. Rings and rod bearings are not stock. I'd like to boost it more, but with running on 93 octane, I would rather avoid an engine explosion. I'd like to get as high as 300whp. The failure rate of my clutch is about 314ftlbs and the tranny is good for about 300 as well. I'm just interested in knowing what I'm in for if I push it as high as 20psi. The fuel pump, injectors, and turbo can all handle it. Its the internals I'm worried about.

    • @truthseeker7084
      @truthseeker7084 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Christopher Lowery sure I'll enlighten you , it is the stock block and stock heads. However it has the stroker kit from emerald coast motorsports. Forgerd pistons, rods ,billet crank, 11mm oil pump, tgv deletes,gates waterpump and timing belt, bigger oil pan baffled and better pickup, ARP head studs, oem gaskets, i.d. 750cc on 93 octane. 8:5:1 piston compression ,king race bearings, fmic, catless 3in exhaust from down pipe to tip and uppipe,td05 18g turbo, 2 step colder plugs ngk, ebc, HUGE CREDIT to my tuner Redemption Racing Garage in North Carolina, could've went higher on hp but injectors cut me off which is OK bc I'm going to switch to flex fuel anyway this summer. I think that's the majority of what you're asking me

    • @truthseeker7084
      @truthseeker7084 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Christopher Lowery yea unfortunately I had no plans to go that high in hp but 2 weeks after buying spun the rod bearings in it. So I figured hell while it's apart might as well do everything now while I can. But my Achilles tendon as of now is my stock trans with 213k miles on it but still no slips or pop outs or not even grinding. I don't launch it or slam gears when shifting so that's prob a huge factor the clutch is ACT HDSS and has been pretty good for what it is. Just in my opinion talk to a real good tuner who deals with your car specifically or at least the platform mostly and ask what they have seen that works reliably and also that can be used daily

    • @christopherlowery855
      @christopherlowery855 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@truthseeker7084 Appreciate the report. That's quite the setup. My bottleneck is the pistons and the trans as well. I might go 8.5:1 if I end up rebuilding the bottom end. However, I just did an oilpan gasket job and that alone is a ton of work. I just blew the head gasket coming home on Friday. I picked up some ARP studs and a Vulcan head gasket from SCE. I can't work on it this weekend, but maybe next. Shouldn't take too long. It's an I-4 afterall. The symptom is smoke out of the crank case vent and the oil dipstick tube squirts oil everywhere at boost. Meaning, I'm getting boost into the crank case. Far more than regular blowby. I ended up opening up the crank case vents by boring out the internal gas passages on the valve cover. It should vent pressure a lot easier now. I ran a borescope down each compression chamber to look at the rings and bore. Everything there looks good, which means head gasket. I also saw a good amount of compressed air bubbles in the radiator too, so I could be seeing boost leak in the cooling system as well. Not the first time this car has sat for a few weeks. I could put 1-2 more PSI on boost, but after that, my clutch would start to slip. I added 33hp with just a tune and increasing the boost from 14psi to 17. I mainly got this car to fly past left lane campers and to out maneuver dumb drivers in general. It serves its purpose pretty well so far. I would like to track it more.

      from my experience as a car mechanic I'd say most these problems are caused by too many pennies pinched. if you use cheapo, too small timign chaiuns they won't last long. any engineer or technician with EXPERIENCE could tell you that this or that will eventually fail before it's time. but penny pinchers at the makers don't have that experience, and I susupect many engineers, neither, because those things can't be taught at the university. you'd have to see it yourself.
      when I learned car mechanic late 80's I think 4 or 5 classmates were using the apprenticeship to collect experience before going after an engineer career.
      my daily driver is an Opel Astra from 94, 1.6 litre OHC with timing belt and aluminium head and single-point FI and 73HP and Opels famous cassette gearbox, nearing 300k KM and still going strong. body needs work, and sometimes some sensor acts up, but nothing that needs attention; it's just not dying.
      my other car is a Ford Taunus from 1974 with the 1.6 OHC, timing belt and all, also not far from 300k KM. Guess what? refuses to die.
      so it's not all bad; only how the materials and designs are chosen and executed, and where they save money and where they don't.
      of course, someone who doesn't know how to drive will destroy any car.

It pulls a 4.3 0-60 and handles like it's on rails... However... It's a complete pain in my butt. The only reason I won't sell it is because I have so much money into it that I just can't bring myself to do it. I might as well burn a giant pile of cash. I'm too embarrassed to say how much I have in it, so I'm going to enjoy it. Despite all its issues, it is one of the best cars I have ever driven. I often feel like I'm the only guy in Louisville who is rolling a tricked out MINI. I've literally never seen another the whole 6 years I've owned it. I've embarrassed and gained the respect of many V8 and other popular platform owners. I couldn't have picked a better sleeper. I don't get to enjoy it that often because it's always broken. Right now, I'm having the head built. The only reason I decided to trick out my MINI is because for the price a dealership charges to work on it, I can take it to my local Euro shop and give it an upgrade. If the car didn't break so much, it would probably still be stock. I knew I would see my car on this list. The only real drawback to my car is that when I think about what I would have if I dumped the money I spent on my R55 into a V8 it makes me cry... I try not to think about it.

To me - the $7000 price differential is well worth getting the sti (that was the difference back in 2007) - you also get the differentials which pivot the car around turns. Trust me - it's well worth the investment as most wrx drivers drive 'em like they stole 'em!

    There’s nothing wrong with an STI a long as it’s not been modified or as I call it, jungledized within an inch of it’s life. Once it’s been modified to be something it was never meant to be, then it becomes a money pit. It took two years to find one, but the 2006 STI we found was pretty much stock, and with regular maintenance, it’s been trouble free for nine years.

They have an 80’s style metal cap on them like old GM lug nuts did, but they all go bad after like 1 on/off cycle due to the torque crushing the cap. And they only sold them thru dealerships, and they were literally $7 ea up until about a year ago. The Chrysler 200 has the same ones. It amounts to a $35 tax per wheel every time you get a flat! 🤦‍♂️

      For those of us who spend our lives in the used car market, we refer to those miles as not even being broken in yet. Most powertrain warranties won't expire until 100k mi. It's what happens after the 10yrs/100k mi mark we're concerned about. For ANY car, the expectation is to have zero issues below 100k mi. The only maintenance should be brakes, oil, tires, trans fluid, timing belt\chain(preventative maintenance only), and battery. That's it. Any other issues below 100k mi, that car is junk. We say this because there is no way the maintenance to duribility ratio is cost effective for a car like that. I have a car that's 23yrs old, 33yrs old, 16yrs old and 15yrs old. The highest milage is 193k, the lowest is 96k. The most work I've done is on the one with the lowest milage (its the project/daily) I spend more time/money adding mods than I do maintaining the vehicle. It's 23yrs old. The others, they've had expected service items. (Oil pan gasket, alternator, starter, AC compressor, clutch slave cylinder, etc). From my perspective, any car below 100k mi shoud be considered "like new" and not have any of the higher milage car issues. It's when water pumps, alternators, ac compressors, radiators, and even intakes can't survive the 100k mi mark, that we take one look and say.. "hard pass" We know we'll need to do that a few more times for that car. We'd rather only do it once for a different one. When you look at cars in this perspective, 3yrs and 37k mi is a drop in the bucket. A battery is literally the only thing you should have to replace in that timespan. A good set of ceramic brake pads will easily last you 5yrs. Even organics will last 2 or more. Anyway, that's probably the reason why your experience was relatively maintenace free. Glad you enjoyed it while you had it. I've always wanted an A4 ever since NFS U2.
      Cheers.
