I got asked to cover this over on IG (@Alex.Martini__) and because I left my tin hat out from the last video I decided to give this my thoughts. I don't know why Toyota would so directly deny any accountability other than because they don't want to have news articles reporting on their reliability issues....so instead they'll let the reporting be about the fires themselves. lol. I've never been a fan of the introduction of data collection in cars. I understand WHY they exist, but opting out should be as easy as it is on my iphone and if you think for a second this won't eventually litter into an insurance claim for you, I got bad news... But what're your thoughts? Am I overstretching and creating unnecessary "TH-cam" hype or AMIRITE.? Love ya'll. Mod your car at MartiniWorks or i'll call you parents.
ive always thought too much technology will only cause problems in a car the only hope now is for enough people to be made aware of it and try to rally against it or boycott new cars that track your data if we dont do something about it or at least voice concerns to manufacturers eventually the government might force all cars on the road to be incapable of exceeding the speed limit
99 Eclipse NA, I still adore it though, absolutely great condiction only minor problems like paint and few other I think she's a keeper and great first car
They will just start raping you on insurance or outright refuse to allow you to title/tag them for use on the street. You cant just sit back and ignore this because it wont go away.
It's a bait and switch. They say you void the warranty for going over 85 mph IN A PERFORMANCE SPORTS CAR and then they give you a free year membership to NASA with one free track day to encourage you to void your warranty. WTF, Toyota?!?!
You can got 85 all you want as long as it's on a road that 85 is below the limit. The issue here is that these shitheads are doing 85 in a 40 and acting surprised that the car they bought and agreed to gives all their info over the insurance companies and everyone knows exactly when and where you are doing these things.
As someone who owns and enjoys his 2024 GR Corolla, Toyota's attitude in this regard concerns me. I'm hoping they get brought to the cleaners in court.
That's what i'm saying. I LOVE the GR Corolla, its a rad car. But two very public cases and no larger response makes me worry they're going to wait for something more dangerous to happen before they act.
@@AlexMartini. Toyota seems to have a very reactive response to these claims rather than a proactive one.Lets hope no one has to be seriously injured or worse for them to act accordingly, i am a huge Toyota fan but this would make to go in another direction, another reason i prefer older cars !!! .
I also have a 2024 but I opted out of the connected services (Toyota Connect...) from the very start so Toyota doesn't get my Data(so if they start using data from my car I can then sue them for breach of privacy). I still have only 9300km on it and keep a close eye on everything. I LOVE the car more than I anticipated. But now Imma get a good extinguisher for the car just in case.
I roasted the brakes on my M2 at a track day while the car was still on original warranty. When I went back to the dealer, they said, "they're supposed to handle track days," and put a new set on the car all on BMW's nickel.
So BMW despite gospel of "design" when it comes to parts situation is still pretty much covered even with "rogue" use cases which felt like something unheard of for a company that "Don't want to make boring cars"

If insurance already knew they weren't going to cover your damage because you sped 4 months ago, but still collected your monthly payments for full coverage... Sounds like fraud.
Insurance DID cover his damage. They totaled his car. Insurance will only give you fair market value. The owner had a gap, meaning he stilled owed MORE money than the car is worth. This is likely because he put 0 zero down or because he was underwater on his previous load and rolled over the balance on to his new loan. How to avoid this? Purchase Gap insurance to cover the difference, put more money down or avoid rolling over remaining balance onto your new loan. This scenario would also happen if you get into a car accident leaving the dealership or if you total your car within 36 of ownership. For reference, most auto loans are for OVER 100% of the sale price meaning people finance taxes, fees, previous balances etc. These are the risks.

I'd say it would actually be more like buying a phone and voiding the warranty by jail-breaking it and installing apps that were not approved, then claiming warranty when your phone gets screwed up. Be realistic. At no time has any auto manufacturer or insurance company opted to cover your car when used in a racing application. I'm not saying you should feel good about it or that it's cool that you get hosed... but every insurance or warranty policy says this. It doesn't matter what the car is built for. If you race it or push it in a manner that goes outside "legal" use, then expect to not have an issue covered under insurance or warranty. If insurance or auto manufacturers didn't put in these disclaimers, they'd go broke with all the money they'd have to shell out to fix these things. This is reality at its finest... and I don't understand how people are all shocked and shaken by it.

Right! I’m trying to understand why Toyota would cover this? Isn’t this clearly on the owner for not having gap? I’ve never heard of someone expecting the manufacturer to pick up the remainder from a bad loan.
You realize gap insurance doesn’t always cover the entirety of a loan just the depreciation of the vehicle itself. It will not cover taxes, and market adjustment dealers use. to be fair with the GR86/BRZ, Subaru never really advertised performance. They were pretty straight up saying this is a car for road consumption, while Toyota were giving free track days and hyping it up as Gazoo Racing. Toyota is a marketing behemoth, and have more marketing power and reach, and have different marketing on their cars, than Subaru. So they even created some random back history for the car (how the vision was born from classic Toyota cars (where some lead designer referenced some old school boxer Toyota, but then they still tie it into the AE86 somehow, which makes no sense, besides the obvious reason of marketing) and how Mr Toyoda gave it his personal tick of approval, and how it forms part of Gazoo Racing etc) while Subaru never mentioned any of that crap, they just built it from an Impreza chassis and used Subaru parts (or Subaru designed parts) then sold it as the BRZ and gave Toyota their cars. Also, when it came to warranties, from all the forum reports I have read, Subaru have been more supportive of covering in warranty, while Toyota was initially fighting them, then finally caved in.
@@Jez4prez1 I don’t think that’s accurate. Toyota/subaru/scion was even offering track days for the GT86. And it’s not just those cars. Subaru pushed the rally heritage of the WRX/STI constantly. Rally teams would buy either a Spec C under special order from Subaru, or they would buy the Prodrive built version from the UK (official partner of Subaru with rally), which was already prepped. My country even had another official Subaru partnered builder of prepped rally cars (that was not Prodrive). @DissFooJosh which dealership? Over revving is human error, that's Toyota taking a loss for a driver error, which should not be under warranty. Honestly, a business should only be taking responsibility for what the business did wrong, not what the customer did wrong, or they'll feel compelled to "equalize" things with these 2 GRCs that burned.
Many out there can't understand that even some kings don't stay on their throne forever. Just because some companies were once considered reliable as an option, doesn't mean they still are.
I spoke to my brother that works at Toyota. The GR Corolla warranty is black and white. Once you go over 85 MPH... the warranty is null and void PERIOD. I told him this will kill your reputation especially their GR Products. I can say that I will be NOT buying any Toyotas EVER!! Added to my original comment: All the GR cars are being tracked and or the data is being collected for the dealership's private use.
Interstate speed limits near me are 80mph and you hit 85 all the time just casually passing trucks and minivans. This will wreck Toyota's reputation voiding warranties for normal highway driving in Texas, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Utah, and Wyoming.
I don't think they'll be able to to enforce that, once people start going to court. I definitely want to see how this plays out with a lawsuit, which I hope these guys are gonna start.
@@strmshadow8411 same thing happened to the GR86 claim a couple years ago where they voided the claim because they found pics of the owner auto crossing the car. 1) not posting everything you do on social media is a good practice just in general and 2) I'm almost positive that Toyota will backpedal on this claim, just like they did with the 86 because of the bad press
@@travis3810 I agree that they'll backpedal following enough negative press. But, damaging your car from driving on the track and having not 1 but 2 cars engine catch on fire from driving on the interstate are two totally different scenario's. I considered getting a Toyota. Specifically the gr corolla, but then I heard about them burning down, and now Toyota won’t accept responsibility?!?! I definitely won’t be buying from them anytime soon
This is why I'm keeping my father's 2002 corolla as a daily driver. Previous corolla's are bullet proof, not these new cars that are just one step above a glass trophy that breaks once you breath on them.
This is specifically the GR Corolla which is an entirely different engine created initially for rallying. Which almost certainly explains the problem as I guarantee whatever part is failing in the engine and causing fires is one that gets replaced every couple of events on the actual rally cars and so never came up as a flaw unable to handle daily driving long term.
Corporations know that the average person cannot afford to fight them in court, so they have little to lose by denying the claim. This, in the end, will require everyone, either not buying new cars, or banning together to fight them. Technology is wonderful until its used against you.
In the U.K. Lancia got such a bad reputation they gave up trying to sell them here. And that was just for premature rusting. If people want a car where the engine blows up and catches fire they might as well save some money by buying a Ford Ecoboom.
Having worked at a Toyota dealer, there is a red and white sticker, typically on the overhead console, of every new Toyota sold that says data will be collected and sent back to the manufacturer. It is only to be removed by the buyer. If a dealer removed that sticker before you bought it, you likely have a legal case against them.
I keep one in my cars and it's made for grease and electrical fires , so more affective against fuel , oil , or electrical fire as apposed to just a liquid filled run of the mill extinguisher, not that they don't work but not as good on a car fire .. peace and love brotha, stay safe
That's debatable though. A fire extinguisher will "save" your car, but it will still probably have fire damage. I'd rather have it burn down and use insurance. I'd only have a fire extinguisher if I didn't have full coverage.
those are new cars which started collecting data as early as 2000. This story is related to insurance OBD2 tracking for lower premiums. But i can garantee you can hook up to either of those and see OBD data regarding all the sensors inluding speed within the last DTC clear. You need pre OBD2 to be safe from data being saved.

Planned Obsolescence goes back to before my parents day (I’m 57 and my parents are in their mid 80’s). Back when I was a kid the name Alfred P Sloan was the villain that term was applied to. Conversations then took place just as casually as now when it came to changes in automobile. My parents are still car enthusiasts but I remember when electronic fuel injection came out on GM brands and my dad didn’t embrace that well at all - for the longest time.
The speed limit beep isn’t new tech per se…. Cars have already been registering speed limit signs for a little while now and they’d turn red if you’d surpass them. Now they’ve included a mandatory beep with it, which can be turned off. But it automatically turns on at each restart.
If that is the case.....someone who test drove the vehicle could have gone over 85mph and voided the warranty before the owner even gets to the car. Better yet the dealer that isn’t on the “up and up”, could take the car out and do it as well just to void it as well🤔
Here's the easy explanation: The golden era of cars has already past. All these auto manufacturers including Toyota are well past their peak of building bulletproof vehicles of the 90s and 2000s. The market demands tech filled disposable cars and the automakers are more than happy to oblige.
Agreed. The Germans started doing that in the late '90s when they decided they wanted to put one of their vehicles in everybody's garage. Quality went down. Warranty claims went up. As did the prices... In recent years I'm seeing things out of Toyota that I never saw in my nearly three decades in the automotive repair industry. Sure random things can happen to any brand, but they're getting out of hand lately. They don't want you driving your vehicles for 20 years and 300,000 miles. That's why they make lease deals so attractive. Come in every 3 years and get a new one! Their hopes are, that you make it through the warranty period with as few claims as possible, then you're on your own. Unfortunately for them, these issues are arising with young vehicles still under warranty.

@@fatman1288 they are a hell of a lot more fun to drive than the GRC. Coming from a type r owner so ive got no horse in this race...got two friends one with EN and other with VN.. Both the Ns just feel so much more lightweight and torquey, GRC feels quite heavy due to its AWD system, but it's got insane traction no denying that.
There is a reason there has been such a push to retire "older" vehicles, ban standalone ECU's, crack down on tuners....almost all new cars have some sort of passive connectivity, look at the C7+ corvette community; they've had warranties denied since 2014 due to on board recording of events.
So Toyota gives out a "free GR track day", I hit >120mph on mine. There was nothing about voiding the warranty. Toyota was also giving GR86 owners shit about blowing an engine (some even on their GR track day), where when the BRZ had issues, Subaru was like "here ya go new engine". I guess that is just part of the full Subaru experience vs Toyota. The crazy thing with the 86/BRZ is Toyota recommends a 1 qt over-fill in the GR/BRZ race series that are out there, which has been proven to reduce the oiling issue blowing engines. Between that and owner data logging, Toyota definitely know why the GR/BRZ motors are blowing but Toyota tries to weasel their way out.
One of the things that has stuck with me is this. It was point out to me when you’re being arrested. “anything you say CAN BE and WILL BE USED AGAINST YOU, in the court of law” but it’s not just when being arrested but anything in the form of legality, they can and will use ANYTHING against you.
I’m an owner and Toyota Corporate is really making me a bit worried about long term ownership. I want to keep this car forever, it’s AMAZING. And I need the AWD, otherwise I’d move into an FL5. Golf R does not have the same appeal to me, it’s not as much fun to drive. So a new AWD manual hatch, the GR is the only option. Hopefully we get a resolution. I can only imagine what these owners are going through, my heart goes out to them. I would be devastated if the car I saved up for and dreamed of owning burst into flames with no resolution on the horizon. The disconnect between Toyota Corp and Gazoo Racing needs to be fixed.
I own a GRC and feel the same. I am tempted to swap this with an FL5 and just put some Blizzaks on for the winter but those cars are still being marked up in my area.
Toyota is dealing with a lot of corruption in the company where basically the financial advisors are taking over and have no idea on building cars to begin with. Its also time to tell many car manufacturers to stop catering to the Chinese market and making cars like they were made in China.
I worked at Toyota around 2011-2017 as a tech and all of their 4 cylinder engines were burning oil and almost every single 4 cyl engine that came in for a service had no oil at all touching the dipstick and the dealership tried to hide it by telling us not to say anything and just fill it up but the people that bought a car and paid attention we had to rebuild the engine with new bearings and piston rings and a lot of these cars were there for their first ever oil change and having maybe 1-2 quarts of oil.
It’s not cocky it’s risk assessment . The Corolla Gr is a low volume vehicle. If a few customers get burned it’s no big deal. If Rav 4s a high sales volume starts failing a larger number of angry customers is too much risk. It’s all a balancing act

They'll just continue to take their customers money knowing they won't honor the coverage? Also, how does this come into play when these cars start going into the used market? They'll reject claims because the previous owner did some something? But I'm sure they'll allow you to purchase coverage and pay until you need to file a claim... greed...
I got asked to cover this over on IG (@Alex.Martini__) and because I left my tin hat out from the last video I decided to give this my thoughts. I don't know why Toyota would so directly deny any accountability other than because they don't want to have news articles reporting on their reliability issues....so instead they'll let the reporting be about the fires themselves. lol.

Class action lawsuit time?

Toyota learned a trick from Subaru. Advertise performance but call it abuse when you actually use it
Well said
to be fair with the GR86/BRZ, Subaru never really advertised performance.
I never raced the car but the problem is I couldn’t prove that I didn’t. I probably could have lawyered up but that would have costed more than the repair itself. Yeah, rally heritage. It never told you these are rally cars, here is a free rally pass. Because the WRX and WRX STI are literal econo cars, made to drive around the streets with. Subaru actually sold the Spec C for rally purposes, and they were only allowed to be sold to people who had a rally drivers license (at least in my country -, only a small number were imported by the dealer, as it was a Japan only model). Rally teams would buy either a Spec C under special order from Subaru, or they would buy the Prodrive built version from the UK (official partner of Subaru with rally), which was already prepped. My country even had another official Subaru partnered builder of prepped rally cars (that was not Prodrive).
"My 15 WRX had transmission issues and despite the car being stock, and a TSB, they claimed that It was from the car being raced."
You know what I think, I think the US has bad dealers, and it can be hit and miss depending on the dealer you work with, since they just make things up. In my country it operates way differently to how it does in the US. Regardless, looking at the Gr86 and BRZ, based on all the stuff I have read which is still in the US, the GR86 forum is basically in agreement that Subaru have handled everything way better than Toyota.

Not all struts need bump stops though. As an example my 79 Subaru which has struts with no bump stop and has been over jumps and hasn't ever had issues with the original 45 year old struts. The spring setup is such that the car could not possibly compress the springs more than the strut could handle even off a jump. Although it only weighs 1800lbs. I'm not a Toyota guy. Toyota dealership employee here and Alex is right all new Toyota vehicles have service connect which will report excessive speed, over revving codes, check engine lights etc. we actually have a Corolla GR that the owner over revved the engine to 10,000 RPM and threw a rod out the block but we still were able to get the engine long block covered through warranty just depends which Toyota dealership helps you guys and ultimately what Toyota motor company decides each claim

@DissFooJosh which dealership? Over revving is human error, that's Toyota taking a loss for a driver error, which should not be under warranty.
I blew the motor on my Z06 Corvette on the race track (HPDE event) and GM covered it under warranty (~$23,000). The warranty receipt stated " Tech assist also recommend that after each competitive event that the vehicle fluids should be changed".
I considered getting a Toyota. Specifically the gr corolla, but then I heard about them burning down, and now Toyota won’t accept responsibility?!?! I definitely won’t be buying from them anytime soon
I don't want my car collecting data on my driving. It seems I have no choice except to buy older cars.
Welcome to the shitbox club brodie
This is why I'm keeping my father's 2002 corolla as a daily driver. Previous corolla's are bullet proof, not these new cars that are just one step above a glass trophy that breaks once you breath on them.
*Treat it nice and it will run forever.*
That 2005 Porsche cayman s is looking really attractive rn
Corporations know that the average person cannot afford to fight them in court, so they have little to lose by denying the claim. This, in the end, will require everyone, either not buying new cars, or banning together to fight them. Technology is wonderful until its used against you.
That's what happens when you make cirizens united (corporation) vs fde rulings
In the U.K. Lancia got such a bad reputation they gave up trying to sell them here. And that was just for premature rusting. If people want a car where the engine blows up and catches fire they might as well save some money by buying a Ford Ecoboom.
Toyota feels like garbage now. Poor quality. I have a 2024 Toyota corolla. Issues issues issues
The other day i told myself i should buy a fire extinguisher in the middle of work to keep in my car, and then i see this lmao
I keep one in my cars and it's made for grease and electrical fires , so more affective against fuel , oil , or electrical fire as apposed to just a liquid filled run of the mill extinguisher, not that they don't work but not as good on a car fire .. peace and love brotha, stay safe
Well shit I was thinking the same thing. I'll buy one today then.
Hold on, ain’t that mandatory? It is where I live, at least
That's debatable though. A fire extinguisher will "save" your car, but it will still probably have fire damage. I'd rather have it burn down and use insurance. I'd only have a fire extinguisher if I didn't have full coverage.

Planned Obsolescence goes back to before my parents day (I’m 57 and my parents are in their mid 80’s).
Back when I was a kid the name Alfred P Sloan was the villain that term was applied to. Conversations then took place just as casually as now when it came to changes in automobile.
