Now I got it...I would do long flights, arrive at my destination and not have a direct approach to the runway...now I do...thanks, great video tutorial KSFO-KLAX here I come
This video is awesome you certainly explain this so well- I know its an old video how ever I have followed other videos as well- I have a slight problem- When I engage Nav mode my Autopilot does not follow the flight plan heading at all- I checked to make sure I am on nav mode- not vor1 or vor2. I see that your display shows FMS- mine shows Gps. Anyway great video.
Once you have a flight plan in the system (it can just be direct to the nearest airport) NAV on the autopilot and GPS selected on the Active Nav should take you to your waypoint assuming auto pilot is on. I'd need more info to look into your specific issue. Good luck!
Thanks for a nicely explained video on ILS approach. Great Job!! 👏 I have watched tonnes of videos as i have been struggling to get the auto pilot to capture the GS (I have been trying on TBM and A320 Neo), and i almost gave up blaming it on the bugs on the xbox version, but now i clearly understand what i have been doing wrong. I need to set up all the ILS info correctly and not use NAV mode in the last leg, just use heading mode and switch on the APP mode while holding the correct altitude. Could you please also make a video (if not already) for Airbus FMS system and if there's a way to do it on xbox without the need to pull up the charts, just like you did for TBM930? I'd really appreciate any help on that, as i have been unable to find any videos that are not too complex for casual console simmers like myself 🙏
Glad you were able to figure it out! I’ll look into making a A320 video. My guess for the Xbox version is that it is not possible or very simple because of the lack of buttons you can press.
@@DiggyPowell yeah xbox version seems like a watered down version of the pc version, but the newer updates are supposed to have added all auto pilot features. Probably easiest is to connect a mouse to the xbox for pressing buttons (as I've seen some youtubers doing). Any knowledge on A320 fmc/auto pilot/ils approach will be highly appreciated 🙏. TH-cam is full of such videos today, but none seems to be at the level that casual gamers can get into it seems. A video similar to this one (that noobs like me can understand), will make a big difference imo 🙏
Really good tutorial and helped me a lot but Skyvector does not provide airport charts for Europe, only US/Alaska as I know of. It does have other information though. Correct me if Im wrong.
I would like to see a full IFR tutorial on the 747 and the A320. seems like the ap is broken on them but I'm not sure I do the same as I would in FSX but things seem wonky
Thank you for this superb video. Much appreciated. A couple of notes/inquires: When I followed along two times, the course that was plotted for me took me south, then a quarter of a circle to Gaatr. I noticed right after takeoff you tuned on AP in HDG mode then straight to NAV mode, any reason for this? If you fly in NAV mode towards the runway, then turn on the approach mode, its identical to NAV except it will fly along with the GS as published in the ILS procedures we selected? Did I get that correctly? Thanks again.
Hi, I found this to be the best tutorial on using ILS. Very clear. Could you help me with one question? How do you move your view around the instrument panels? I must be stupid but I just can’t figure it out!
Thank you for the help. It is a shame that skyvector doesn’t given you the approach plate for so many airports (even the big ones). For example London, Heathrow or Paris, Charles de
I wonder if you could explain, maybe in another video, when to activate the approach, with the "Activate Approach" button, not the APP button on the FMC? Thanks!!
You can load and active approach as on the ground, in route, or right before. It really doesn't matter for practice. Now if you're using VATSIM and the controller tells you to do a different approach, you'd want to load that as soon as possible. But "Loading and Activating" is very different that activating APPR!
This is very helpful, really enjoying your videos, what is the best way to calculate descent rate from like 15000ft to first waypoint (2000ft), I know the calculation of altitude minus elevation by 3 divided by 1000 for the fpm but I always come to high and have to rush at the end to get at the waypoint speed to capture the loc, any insights would be very helpful, thanks!
I am trying to follow this on my system while watching the video. My system brings up a different transition, which I can Load, but the Activate button is grayed out. My transition is called CHS. I am so new to this. Why can't I activate the specified ILS transition?
Is there a way to lookup runway ILS NAV frequencies within the Flight Sim as shown around 04:45, in particular while using the Cessna 172S G1000? I haven't been able to figure this out.
Always had this issue that was ruining my landings where I would switch from fms to nav1 main to catch the localizer (or to follow the VOR for a final on VOR/DME approach) while on nav mode in ap and my plane would start rolling 360° ... It was making me sick! Going to hdg just before clicking on approach button fixed it, thank you! However do you know if it's a bug of the simulator or if it's supposed to be the same irl?
Awesome tutorial for regular non pilot folks like myself. One question though, I flew from jfk to kewr and when I switched to heading it never picked up the glideslope. Any reason?
Might want to rewatch the tutorial. So once you're on your final heading to pick up the GS/LOC, you want to make sure you're active nav is set to nav1 or 2, depending on what you LOC freq is dialed into, then simple press the APPR button to activate the approach and it should intercept both the GS and LOC. Hope this helps
Great tutorial I have a question Why when I near the waypoint to the Approach and I Hit the button to change the fms to loc only shows vor1 or vor2 and dont Work
That is because you didn't tune in the correct ILS frequency into nav1 or nav2 for that specific ILS approach. Once you're near or on the approach. Change active nav to wherever you plugged in the freq, then simply press the APPR button and it should do the rest for you. Rewatch the video at pay close attention to how to properly set it up and then how to activate it! Good Luck!
Thanks a lot for this tutorial. It helped me a lot! I have one question: what’s the difference between “LOAD” and “LOAD & ACTIVATE” when selecting the approach procedure in the MFD?
LOAD means you add it to the flight plan ready to be followed when necessary, LOAD & ACTIVATE means you add it to the flight plan and immediately start following it.
Could you explain once I've reach my arrival airport how I delete all data and insert new data to create a new flight plan from where I'm currently at to a new airport without having to go back to main menu
great video but how did you tell it to hold 85knots ive been pulling back my throttle to try to hold a certain speed to land and its a pain in the ass lol and if i understand you right you did not engaged the nav at all you stayed in heading. is that right ?
I was in approach mode following the ILS down the the runway. Both vertical and horizontal guidance. The speed was manually set by the throttle to hold 85kts.
@@DiggyPowell on controler options what is autopilot airspeed hold can i use that ?what i mean is get to the airspeed i need to be at and then engaged that to hold my speed all the way to runway on final approach. will that work instead of trying to feather the speed where it needs to be
Make sure the approach is activated in the flight plan, then you press the approach button on autopilot. Check your CDI and confirm you're tracking the ILS not GPS.
nice tutorial, but I think when you loaded AND activated the ils approach on the ground it automatically eliminated that shrimp point and went directly to the ils fix gaat.. (not familiar with that area). Instead I think you should just load the approach and later before shrimp activate approach. Second thing is you forgot to lift the flaps. By default since you started on the runway it was ready for take off (flaps in the take off position). You are supposed to lift it up after certain altitude after take off. Other than that nice work.
Appreciate it. I’m a commercial pilot IRL but wanted to make this as simple as possible. This is not a tutorial for people who actually know anything about IFR. Definitely some errors trying to make it easy to digest
Do you ever have issues with your auto pilot not engaging on your tbm. I’ve had several long flights after doing what your doing and setting up everything just to have my tbm not work when I turn it on and go to nav mode.
In the overhead panel to the far right! AP/TRIM switch, without it you cannot use the AP! Check out my flight planning video for a full proper startup for the TBM.
Diggy Powell thank you for your reply. I’m really enjoying your videos. And I’m having issues with the AP and I’ve checked to make sure that AP switch on the upper right panel is on. I’ve also had it hold altitude, but won’t catch the nav. Just wondering if anyone else was having issues. I’m mostly flying the TBM. Sometimes if I simply end the flight, exit to the menu, then go back in my AP will work. Could just be a bug I guess.
Mr Walker the 4 things you need to use autopilot correctly are: AP/trim switch on, autopilot on, active nav set to FMS, and for altitude click the alt button to simply hold the current alt
Mr Walker for sure, it’s either bugged on whatever plane ur in, one of those 4 things is not turned on or you have some weird assistance turned on. Keep me posted!
Weston Eichner it shows VOR because you have the wrong frequency in or you’re not close enough. To change to LOC From GPS, change the active nav from fms to nav1 or nav2 for the LOC then press the approach button
@@DiggyPowell The reason I ask is that my auto pilot navigation just seems wonky - has a mind of its own - and I thought maybe the issue is that at no point does my display say FMS. It only says GPS, NAV1, NAV2, etc. FMS is not selectable and is at no point ever displayed. I recognize that inside the FMS is GPS and the other options. Again, I was just trying to figure out what FMS shows on your display and doesn't on mine. thanks so much for the quick response. You have awesome videos.
@@HillDiddy603 The Flight Management System (FMS) is the navigation computer of an aircraft. You have 3 options to choose from in your Active Nav (i.e. what the auto pilot will follow) GPS, Nav1, and Nav2. The Active Nav displays FMS in my video, it should really be saying GPS... Regardless when auto pilot in on, nav is set, the plane will follow whatever is currently set in the active name. The tricky part of the ILS approach is that you typically follow the GPS up until the approach, once "cleared" on the approach, that's when you activate APPR mode which will switch over your active nav to ILS (NAV1) and intercept the approach. I hope this clears things up for you. Good luck!
hey buddy, how did you get that little pop out box when you click on the airport that shows you all that information? Mine opens up a new page and doesn't show anything like that
@@DiggyPowell yes, should of been more clear. I meant on the skyvector website. Not the actual plane. When I click on the purple airport information link, it takes me to another page and doesnt show me any glide slopes etc
Beta is Reverse Thrust. Used to slow the aircraft down instead on breaks. Big jets use Reverse Thrust while Turboprop aircraft like the TBM flip the blades in the opposite direction which is properly known as Beta.
@@DiggyPowell Thanks mate. My PC has problems going to sleep mode when nvidia overlay is on. Just have to remember to turn it off when I'm done. You ever have sleep issues?
@@DiggyPowell Meaning the monitors, hard drives, etc, turning off after 15 minutes of inactivity. When I turned nvidia overlay on, it interfered with windows power settings and my system would not go into sleep mode. Searching online, many others have experienced this issue, not sure why though.
Quick question. It wasn't clear how the speed (85) was being maintained as you approached. Did AP do that alone or did you manipulate the throttle as well?

@@DiggyPowell on controler options what is autopilot airspeed hold can i use that ?what i mean is get to the airspeed i need to be at and then engaged that to hold my speed all the way to runway on final approach. will that work instead of trying to feather the speed where it needs to be
@@richardPalmisano if your aircraft has an auto throttle you can set an airspeed
Do you know how to increase or decrease the range of the map on the mfd?
Weston Eichner yep! Click on MFD First, then scroll on that knob on the lower panel
Some airports outside of the US don't have the airport diagrams listed on SkyVector. Do you know how one would get the correct frequency then?
I should've probably just watched the video because you explained how to do it ;)
I use foreflight on my iPad when skyvector doesn't have the data but I'm not sure what other websites would work.
What is the total cost to set up , computer, etc to learn all these instrument tutorials at home?
can you show an rnav approach
Check out my RNAV video!
I can't seem to get the loc and GL to show up in white how do I do this?
Make sure the approach is activated in the flight plan, then you press the approach button on autopilot. Check your CDI and confirm you're tracking the ILS not GPS.
Where is the autopilot button in the TBM?
The entire autopilot buttons are on the top of the dash. AP is the button to toggle on or off!
nice tutorial, but I think when you loaded AND activated the ils approach on the ground it automatically eliminated that shrimp point and went directly to the ils fix gaat..
@@DiggyPowell keep up the good work! Any tutorial from real pilots is very valuable for all the flight simulation lovers.
Diggy Powell I’ll make sure to check all those next time I fly. Thanks again. It’s appreciated
Mr Walker for sure, it’s either bugged on whatever plane ur in, one of those 4 things is not turned on or you have some weird assistance turned on. Keep me posted!
When I switch to LOC it shows VOR and I can't change it to Loc from gps
Weston Eichner it shows VOR because you have the wrong frequency in or you’re not close enough. To change to LOC From GPS, change the active nav from fms to nav1 or nav2 for the LOC then press the approach button
The video should explain it all
I never get the option for FMS. Only GPS. Is this the same thing?
FMS uses GPS so if you purple lines on your map, your using GPS to navigate. Once you activate the approach, you should be seeing ILS
Mine opens up a new page and doesn't show anything like that
Are you flying the TBM?
@@DiggyPowell yes, should of been more clear. I meant on the skyvector website. Not the actual plane. When I click on the purple airport information link, it takes me to another page and doesnt show me any glide slopes etc
@@thegamingpirate9938 What airport are you trying to fly an approach into?
@@DiggyPowell NZAA - Auckland New Zealand
@@thegamingpirate9938 Ahh, well sky vector is mainly for USA charts and airports. I am not sure what is best for non USA charts
What do you mean by beta at landing?
Beta is Reverse Thrust. Used to slow the aircraft down instead on breaks. Big jets use Reverse Thrust while Turboprop aircraft like the TBM flip the blades in the opposite direction which is properly known as Beta.
@@DiggyPowell thank you so much 😊 great video
What overlay are you using to show what appears to be FPS in the bottom right hand corner?
ShadowPlay, the built-in Nvidia video capture app. I'm also recording these videos using the same thing!
@@DiggyPowell Thanks mate.
My PC has problems going to sleep mode when nvidia overlay is on.
Just have to remember to turn it off when I'm done.
You ever have sleep issues?
@@JohnnyMUTube What do you mean by sleep issues?
@@DiggyPowell
Meaning the monitors, hard drives, etc, turning off after 15 minutes of inactivity.
When I turned nvidia overlay on, it interfered with windows power settings and my system would not go into sleep mode.
Searching online, many others have experienced this issue, not sure why though.
@@JohnnyMUTube Set a new profile in your sleep and power settings. I've had similar isues.
Quick question. It wasn't clear how the speed (85) was being maintained as you approached. Did AP do that alone or did you manipulate the throttle as well?
It was all manual control. The 930 doesn't have auto-throttle
