Man, I hope he's OK... I have no experience doing anything like the stuff he does to die-cast cars (I used to be more into custom LEGO building and modding old Gameboy consoles), I just stumbled across the channel since my dad has always liked collecting small die-casts for him and I (maybe it's our collective nostalgia fueling it?)... For context, my dad also likes building scale tanks, military trucks and airplanes, so I suppose this isn't too far off as a hobby. I don't know many channels focusing on die-cast cars/trucks, but from the ones I know this has to be the best one... I hope he's alright... Hope you're also OK, Joseph (don't know you, but nice to meet you). Do you also do this as a hobby, or are you just enjoying watching this, like I am?
Right?! Hope he’s doing okay. He’s a quality content creator with a wealth of knowledge on this hobby. Hope the videos haven’t taken away from his own enjoyment in this hobby or causing stress on his family or anything.
I suggest you check out Simply Nailogical, she is an expert in holo paints and powders and top coats that may cross over to this. Also Diecast Resurrection is a great painter and has done a lot of paints involving flake etc.
She also, if I remember correctly, hung around and worked a little in a body shop as a teen, so there's a little crossover. She tested out a "nail polish remover" that I'm pretty sure was the same paint stripper you use, and she made that connection!
I was LITERALLY going to post this. Her linear holo is perfect for this, it has a tight rainbow effect and would show very clearly on this sort of project.

I have a feeling he just took a break from TH-cam due to burnout or personal matters and doesn’t have much of a drive or passion to come back. Covid had an impact as to why his channel skyrocketed in views between 2020-2021, so considering that it’s not so much of a threat as it once was, he’s not getting the same kind of numbers, and that sometimes can have people leave the platform and never look back

If you come back, I suggest making Spectraflame customs of M2 Machines (specifically the ones with opening doors and hoods), as they can give a lot more detail, and it seems interesting.

I just customized my very first diecast car. All based on what I remembered from your videos, without any direct reference. My reward for completing the project was to see what you're up to today... Then I realized why I hadn't watched any baremetalhw vids in a while. I hope all is well. My project turned out better than I could have hoped, and it's all thanks to the knowledge you shared. Fyi, Rusto also makes a "Iridescent" colorshift in that same paint line, except it's more of a larger rainbow flake as opposed to the smaller flake 2color shift options they offer 🤙🤘

I really enjoyed these videos, with the dry and whitty sense of humor thrown in. They got me back into collecting and now into restoring as well, and for that I’m grateful. As for the current hiatus, I get it. The popularity just exploded and in lots of the comments there are people asking for something. All that, plus the demands of most likely a day job, would for sure take the joy out of it. I may be completely off base, but will always check back for maybe something new. If not, that’s ok too.

Hey man, I started watching your videos when you first got shared on Reddit and blew up a little bit. Always have loved them. Fast forward like 6 years, today my daughter and I assembled a Hot wheel track for The first time. Like we put together a proper one with the powered launcher and stuff. She just turned two and she absolutely loved it. Now and ask me to open the cars and I have to try to get her to understand that Hot Wheels usually don't open. Anyway, when we were playing with Hot Wheels I figured I'd put your video on and she really enjoyed watching you fix up this Tesla. She has an almost identical remote control, Hot Wheels brand actual Hot Wheels scale car of that Tesla in red that she likes to play with, so she started saying red car paint, red car paint, black car and things like that, she really enjoyed it. Anyway, I know the life of a content creator is often a lot more stress and nerves than it needs to be and I thought a nice little anecdote might be nice.
Nice job on the customization Zack. It clearly took considerable work and research. To photograph the final effect, maybe you could take your turntable out into the sun and film it. Cool hologram BTW. You should post a video about making one.

I've had decent luck with vinyl wrap on diecast models, too, and that yields a smooth result without the natural distancing of the glitter. You may need to use cyanoacrylate glue or a similar thin glue to hold the vinyl in the front or back extremes. A heat gun will help the vinyl stretch, but it'll want to pull back a little, too.
I just remembered this channel recently. Went on a big content binge with this channel before he disappeared. I thought TH-cam just stopped recommending any new videos to me even though I was subscribed. Hope he is doing well.

Duplicolor sells a clear coat called clear effects that works AMAZING. Works best with black but I've sprayed it over all types of base colors including candy and it always gives it that rainbow effect. Looks pretty neat once any light hits it.

You could use a dense makeup sponge and the dragonfly glaze paint or even holographic nail polish to dab the paint on. The sponge absorbs some of the binder and deposits way more flakes, filling any voids and concentrating the holographic effect (SimplyNailogical has many videos on this)
Also tamiya has some great color shift paints I've used 2 one Is iridescent purple that shifts from purple to green and the other is a pink to gold. You need to apply over a black base. But work amazing for spray paint.
There are several diecast car customizing TH-cam channels, but yours is the number one real deal. Somehow, it's much better than the other ones. Sincere. Restrained. Quietly but massively skilled. There's nothing WRONG with the other channels that specialize in this topic, but they're so... ordinary.
The custom bike makers used to put a think coat of lacquer between the sparkle paint layers to give the sparkle effect more depth. You might want to experiment with that.
I'd suggest using clear paint and some really fine holographic pigment - I've used some colour shift pigment in clear paint and painted up a custom model kit that way.
Looks amazing!! Have you checked out holographic/color shifting rub-on pigments, like what nail artists use on gel nails? I've personally used these types of pigments to do my own nails and the effect is incredible, and much more "solid" than the scattered holographic effect of the paint you used on the Tesla. Thanks for a great video.
I feel You should try it again with the spaz stix. I have used it on poly carbonate RC bodies and have got fantastic results. You do have to use their surface prep beforehand and it does require multiple coats to achieve the desired effect. Maybe after a clear coat it would give you the look you were trying to achieve! I think you did a fantastic job anyway! Great video! 😊👍
I have several of the original “harlequin“ paint Colors from back in the 80s, hell maybe even the 70s I can’t remember but it was really old and quite a long time ago. Just a few ounces in a few different colors. It really doesn’t take much especially for small projects and that stuff is insanely expensive. It was lacquer based I believe, and if you ever get ahold of any it’s crazy expensive and you buy it by the ounce. One of my favorites was a flip-flop between gold, purple and green, true harlequin paint is pretty insane if you’ve never seen it in person. I know paint technology has changed so much so maybe it’s old news by now. But I was impressed by it.

I personally would have gone with the first paint. It looks very similar to the actual wrap and the flake was very properly scaled.

There are several diecast car customizing TH-cam channels, but yours is the number one real deal. Somehow, it's much better than the other ones. Sincere. Restrained. Quietly but massively skilled. There's nothing WRONG with the other channels that specialize in this topic, but they're so... ordinary.

I've had good results using alclad holomatic spectral chrome. It's designed to be used in an airbrush.

The custom bike makers used to put a think coat of lacquer between the sparkle paint layers to give the sparkle effect more depth. You might want to experiment with that.
I'd suggest using clear paint and some really fine holographic pigment - I've used some colour shift pigment in clear paint and painted up a custom model kit that way.

Looks amazing!! Have you checked out holographic/color shifting rub-on pigments, like what nail artists use on gel nails? I've personally used these types of pigments to do my own nails and the effect is incredible, and much more "solid" than the scattered holographic effect of the paint you used on the Tesla. Thanks for a great video.
I feel You should try it again with the spaz stix. I have used it on poly carbonate RC bodies and have got fantastic results. You do have to use their surface prep beforehand and it does require multiple coats to achieve the desired effect. Maybe after a clear coat it would give you the look you were trying to achieve! I think you did a fantastic job anyway! Great video! 😊👍
I have several of the original “harlequin“ paint Colors from back in the 80s, hell maybe even the 70s I can’t remember but it was really old and quite a long time ago. Just a few ounces in a few different colors. It really doesn’t take much especially for small projects and that stuff is insanely expensive.
It was lacquer based I believe, and if you ever get ahold of any it’s crazy expensive and you buy it by the ounce. One of my favorites was a flip-flop between gold, purple and green, true harlequin paint is pretty insane if you’ve never seen it in person. I know paint technology has changed so much so maybe it’s old news by now. But I was impressed by it.
Turbodork makes some acrylics color shifts that are pretty dang nice
