Yeah, I'm 28 now, but when I was 12 or so I raised a a Monarch butterfly, fed it milkweed every day until it went into a chrysalis, kept it safe and dry until it hatched... my mother and I went outside and let it go... immediately it flew towards the road and SMACK!!!!!! got hit by a passing truck. Months of my life down the drain... so much hard work and emotional investment lol.
Movingly It's ok, it taught me important lessons about the world and how things work lol. I won't say everyone should have an experience like that, but I think it helps you understand that sometimes you work hard for something and things don't turn out. Life's not always fair, basically...
Your mother could have been more sympathetic about your attachment to a moth. You took care of that pupae almost as long as she carried you! I never knew a moth could take as long a pregnancy to mature. Thank you for the beautiful photos and video.
...Yes. When releasing moths, preferably at dusk, turn off the house lights. Moths can't resist bright lights nearby them. That's why he wouldn't leave.
Ya, I was thinking this, as well. I imagine releasing him @dawn basically decreased his survival chance by a lot. Here's hopin' for the little guy..gal.. w/e.
I figured since he emerged at night that meant it was the safest time for him to be reborn as a moth. You usually don't see moths hanging around in the daytime. They hide until all of the birds and other predators go to sleep. So they're mainly dealing with bats and little insectivore critters. But it's better than being divebombed by birds.
Oh I freaking love you!! You are perfect!! I love that you ran and saved him/her!! You are a person who just loves. No matter the species. We need more of you in the world!!
Brilliant..just found one of these caterpillars today in our garden.. It really startled me at first. I moved him to safety under some leaves down the end of the garden away from our cat which would have gorged it if she seen him. Well done for taking the time to care for Harry
You are thoroughly entertaining and a fantastic educator. Your subject was a steller creature. Nature is filled with awe inspiring moments. Thanks for sharing!!!
I got lucky. When I was little my mother would tell me to leave the bugs alone just like any other mother. Then one day she saw an add in the paper. Someone wanted to hire an entomologist. Starting pay $80,000. She shut up.
I am sooooo glad you saved him! That must have been heartbreaking to see happen. I've thought about having butterflies in my indoor garden, buuuuuuut caterpillars would eat all my babies :C
I’ve had a hawk moth cocoon for 7 months! Today it wiggled while I spritzed it with water!!! I was afraid it was dead. It too has changed in looks so I believe it’s going to hatch soon! Thanks for your videos!!!
Just this morning I found an oak leaf with five large 'beads' stuck to it and then - this video showed up in my TH-cam suggestions. Funny how the universe works! I'm going to go research if they are, in fact, hawk moth eggs. We did have a rather large hawk moth on our porch the other morning. I'm kinda getting excited now.
this and the previous vídeo were soooo illustrative! I've never even thought of a moth having those colors and now I keep looking for vídeos of diferent moths. this is far more interesting than the news or famous people gossip!!!
though i'm still scared of the moths that Fly into my House/closet. when I was younger I heard popular beliefs of moths being messengers of death and even that if one flew over your head you could go bald 😂😂😂
I only once "hatched" a butterfly, it was a cabbage white butterfly who decided to build his cocoon right at my living room window so I could watch him age over the months he took. On one day, he just sat there as the white butterfly he was, took his time to rest, gain strength, pump up his wings and then after a few hours flew off.
omg you are so adorable. so much love went into this little guy. you wait for the relese and he ends up in a spiders web and then your mum asks you to leave it. hell noo. hope he had a happy life ♡
Fascinating. We found a elephant hawk moth caterpillar in the garden this morning, never seen one as big. Released it in a safe place. But thank you for giving us an insight into Harry’s life.
Well, you were right in calling it Harry. Because it was a male. Male Elephant Hawk Moths have antennae that are a bit like a comb (Like Harry's). Females antennae are smooth. But you were wrong in keeping it for so long when it was at it's peak. It should have been free and looking for females to pair with. Honey and water is a bad idea. It can clog up their digestive system and kill them. A weak solution of fructose sugar is a good alternative to nectar. If you ever do this again, I suggest you do some research about moths. When you release a moth, you should do so in twilight or complete darkness. Moths fly toward light. So if you try to release them in a lit up area, they will never fly toward the dark. It wasn't because it liked your house and your company. It's all to do with your lights. I bred Butterflies and Moths back in the 80's for conservation, so I know a lot about them. Please look after these beautiful creatures. Take care William.
I think he might have flew into the web searching for a dark place to hide. You released him during the day and moths have a natural instinct to find somewhere dark and safe to roost during the day.
Fantastic videos. I found 2 Elephant Hawk catterpillars in my garden. I left then crawling up the plants. Hope they survive and hatch out like yours. Thankyou for sharing your experience.
Oh my god. I LOVE moths and butterflies. I just bred like 30 or 40 catterpillars and put them out in the wild recentrly cause they were just too many!! Had no room for them. Your videos and stories are so sweet and interesting to me! So captivating. I caught one of these twice in my life and was FASCINATED. Just wanted to look at it from very close and release it later the same day. Your story about how she flew over your head and then you released her and then rescued her again... Haha was so cute to me. I may be a weirdo but i loved you sharing this, thank you :)
Harry's life story made me smile aww. I love moths, and could never find enough interesting videos on elephant hawk moths, and then i stumbled upon this xD thank you for sharing Harry with us lol
Lovely set of videos. This moth was a male, they have a more pointed abdomen, females have a fatter, shorter, more rounded 'bum'. I also love your approach to the possibility that the moth might end up as food for a bird. I've just posted some photos of our Deilephila elpenor which emerged today and we let go tonight, on my facebook, and I decided to see what TH-cam had to offer. Your videos were top of the menu! I hope you're still 'doing nature' and entomology. Isn't it wonderful?
What a beautiful vlog, so happy you saved Harry ' Harriet ' from the web! was so concerned! lol I had an Elephant Hawk moth for the first time in my garden in 2014 then again in 2015 and now in 2017 we had two on the same plant. I love them
You're so good with even bugs. The other night a moth was in my house I guess & I was almost asleep. In the pitch black, a fucking moth flies into my arm & I jumped 9 zillion feet out of my bed & screamed because what the fuck man. Top 10 scariest moment of my life...
That is such a sweet story and I hope he survives too. I'm 9 we're studying moths and butterflies and we came across your wonderful videos about Harry.
They are so adorable! I never had seen this species before. About two years ago, I saw my first Luna Moth, and I was amazed at the size, shape, texture, and colour of it. I had never seen anything like it before, and I haven't seen one since.
Wow, now this is one heck of a Bye Bye Butterfree story here! Pretty impressive to hear you saved Harry and gave her another chance at life. I hope it proved worth it. Though in any case, clearly it was for you.
At my house I literally found a praying mantis hanging upside down by the gas fire place, it scared me a bit but I put him back outside, my house only had humming birds flying around at that time, I also occasionally find a small spider crawling around my room, I just realized I have no idea what my fear is mice, and rats are ok, I sat beside a rat snake before thinking it was fake before realizing it was real and gave the snake some room, bugs are cool and great so that's not a fear.... Yeah
Lovely video, I have enjoyed watching and learning about Harry, it is very emotional when it comes to gradually letting him go free, as I suppose you will wonder if he will be safe, but as you said nature isn't always sometimes very kind. I do wish Harry well, and you have done an excellent job in bringing him up in a safe environment, and always remember it is credit to you for what you've done, and I hope I will follow in your steps in looking after my elephant hawk moth and his name is "Henry". xx
I love this, thanks so much for showing us! I hope she has her generations and safe place to live at wild life. Thanks so much for saving her from the spiders webs
You sounds like a genuinely nice person. I'm sorry you Mom share your level of enthusiasm towards Harry. I know this video is 4 years old now, and Harry is long since passed, but hopefully his children are still out there somewhere (maybe annoying someone else's Mom too...lol).
Bye bye Harry! Are you going to get any more caterpillars? I have done painted ladies before and they pupate quite quick, I think I would like to try peacocks this year!
not sure yet, its so hard to release them, I get too attached haha. Peacock butterflies are awesome and their caterpillars are so pretty. Online there only seems to be painted ladies. If I'm going to get anymore they'll probably ones I pick up if I go down by the river, in the countryside, but I don't know when I will, or whether I will. So no plans at the moment lol
Well done for your dedication in protecting Harry and releasing him at the best possible time, hopefully next year there will be lots of baby Harry's flying around near to where you live.
we have an elephant hawk moth now in chrysalis form we called her Ellie the elephant .. she is currently cocooned under leaves and fuscia flowers in our butterfly house !! Still a tiny bit of movement so we know she's ok .. we spray the house once a week ... its been 4 weeks now xx eeek
This was on my recommended feed, Love your enthusiasm for moths. I can't help, but think about that song "Goodbye Horses" by Lazarus Q featuring Buffalo Bill, when that moth is flapping about on your finger.
+Leopard Gecko I have a Leopard gecko her name is Sheila I have had her for 2 months now she is very nice but she is not eating her meal worms what do I do?
SQUIDDUCK TV I would check her temperatures. What about variety? Do you feed her variety of food ? If not she will get bored with the food. Do You have crickets ? Feeding her crickets.
You are such a GOOD PERSON!!! Harry has a very impressive proboscis. I totally understand the horror you must have felt when he got stuck, I have had similar incidents when freeing birds.
haha thank you! :) hahaa, omg I don't know how you would free birds, id get so attached, though I have had to save a few birds from my cat, most of the time they fly straight off, but occasionally sadly they die :( thankfully my cat doesn't hunt often, like once every year or two. Once she bought in a Canary! I think someones pet must have escaped - i'd had a few hours sleep, it was about 7am, pouring rain outside, I hear my mum scream at my dad that the cat had caught it, my dad couldn't be bothered to get out of bed. Me, half asleep, jumped straight out of bed, rain out in the rain, was on the floor trying to get this bird off of my cat. My pjs are now covered in mud, but I got the canary, took it inside, gave it some food, put it in a bird cage, and it recovered well..Sadly we couldn't find its owner so we gave it to a local bird shop :)
I'm so glad you got the canary. :) He was lucky to have you around. Oh, I know all too well what it's like to have to leave a cosy bed to go out and save something. ;)
And what's better to have as a clean up crew . springtails or isopods . I was looking them up after I discovered the mold was growing so they can eat it
I feel like I want to cry ;3; what if Harry remembers you and doesn't want to leave you ;3; (crying) you took care of Harry like if it was your own.....have you seen harry for the past 5 months?
I smiled the whole time. Your passion for these beautiful creatures is wonderful. So many look at caterpillars and hate, think there a pest. They think of the beautiful change they go through. I loved your video, keep up the good work. All creatures great and small make this planet a better place. Except maybe us, we can be pretty stupid. 💜😇

Indeed
Jesse Crandle I'm going to sound like a horrible person but this comment is making me laugh to the point of tears.
Jesse Crandle then it was a caterpillar at first.
This person didn't do research beforehand. I noticed that in the first video
Ya, I was thinking this, as well. I imagine releasing him @dawn basically decreased his survival chance by a lot. Here's hopin' for the little guy..gal.. w/e.

When you said" might get eaten my a bird" I imagined you tackling the bird, then pushing harry out of the bird's mouth 😂
Your voice is so nice to listen to 💕

My Leopard Gecko, Abby, passed away yesterday. Watching something as sweet as this helped me smile - thank you. :)
My science teacher has darkling beetles and right now we have about 5 maybe in pupa, we watch them grow and its really interesting

Aww this was a great video and hopefully Harry will live a great life.
Lovely video, I have enjoyed watching and learning about Harry, it is very emotional when it comes to gradually letting him go free, as I suppose you will wonder if he will be safe, but as you said nature isn't always sometimes very kind. I do wish Harry well, and you have done an excellent job in bringing him up in a safe environment, and always remember it is credit to you for what you've done, and I hope I will follow in your steps in looking after my elephant hawk moth and his name is "Henry". xx
