Sorry for your loss. It's amazing how animals can grieve just like people do but some seem to think they're mindless creatures who don't care.

thanks :) yeah anyone who thinks that need to do some serious research. I watch a documentary called 'the elephant who loved to much', basically it was a baby elephant who's mother died when she was a few weeks old, a lady then raised her, but left her in the care of her friend for a month, as she had to go somewhere, the baby elephant thought she'd lost a second mother, and she basically died of a broken heart, she stopped eating, drinking, she'd cry.. its so sad.

That's sad.... I used to have rabbits but hawks or coyotes were trying to eat them.... I let them run around the yard, one laid by a bush and the other two sat together under a lounge chair :(

So sorry for your loss, I lost my chin Asia recently too. She left behind her mate Neela and I was so worried about how she would cope without her. She was a bit off the first day or so but I tried the cuddly toy thing too and it really did seem to work, she would cuddle into it and I noticed she started eating and drinking more after I introduced the toy, so I really would also recommend that.

tip #1 is appropriate, regardless of the pet. When my 17yr old kitty died (of renal failure), we let the other animals be with him in his last moments. They each came up, smelled him, paused, and then went to their favorite place to lay down. There wasn't the same wailing and calling as there was when my female cat lost her kitten (due to a genetic respiratory issue). You have my sincere empathy, and I'm saddened for your loss.

give them a few days or a week and get them a friend. its crucial for a social animal like them. it doesn't have to be the same breed it can be any other good friendly animal.

I am so thankful you did this video. My 6 year old male chinchilla "Monkey" passed away yesterday evening and it has been detrimental to say the least. Like your baby girl, I believe he had a heart attack as there were no physical signs of injury. He actually passed in my arms so I am thankful for that as he knew he was being loved and cuddled as he passed. I am going straight away when I'm off work today to get a snuggle safe toy for my remaining 15 year old chin "Chili" (who is Monkey's father) to snuggle with and help with the transition of his loss. I wish I knew of the idea to let Chili see Monkey after he passed to help with the grieving but I have already placed him in a little coffin and have buried him in the animal graveyard area in my backyard. Chili seemed to be doing well this morning as he was excited when I gave him some of the OxBow strawberry treats so I'm praying he continues to eat and drink well. OxBow also makes yogurt drops in several flavors that are safe for chins so check them out for your baby girl. Again, thank you for filming this video as hard as I know it was for you at the time. Look forward to seeing more videos of your chin baby! ♥

Thanks so much for putting this video up!! I had 2 male Chinchillas- ChiChi & Roo - same as you, we went in one morning to check on the chinchillas and Roo had passed away he was in his fish tank / dust bath and Chichi right next to him trying to keep him warm. Roo was cold so I know that Chichi knew he was gone. Chichi is eating & drinking but is shedding something awful! I know he's missing his brother very much as they have been together for 7 years come mother's day. I'm planning a new wood Chin cage for him in hopes that it will break him from shedding since the atmosphere will be different and we will be able to move him from room to room so he can be where we are. we both knew Chichi was stressing from missing Roo- but now after seeing the video we're sure of it. thanks again and thanks for the tips!!! I had 2 guinea pigs and they were brothers. They grew up together and never really knew anyone outside of my family. About a week and a half ago the albino (one was albino and one is melanistic) passed away from kidney failure after a blockage from a bladder stone caused complications. He had to be put down at only 3 (about half way to 4) years old. If the way to deal with grieving with guinea pigs is in any way similar I did it all wrong and I hope it doesn't affect him in the future. I did allow the two to see each other one last time before I took him to the vet. I feel the remaining understood what was happening, however, because he was being a lot more gentle than usual. I never really got the chance to spend as much time as I usually did with him for the days after this occurred because of my own grieving. About a week ago I purchased a rescue guinea pig who is only 6-7 months old while getting supplies for another animal. I don't know if I introduced a new companion too soon or not but he does seem to be taking well to having a happy little distraction around. (I'm only worried about the size difference. 3.6 lbs compared to only 1.2 lbs). Please, if there's anything I should know that may be different or wasn't included here, tell me. This was the first animal I've lost other than carnival goldfish that lived for a week. I'm sorry for your loss.

Thank you! My Treelo just had to be put down yesterday. His brother, Tutter, seems to be doing alright for now, but I'm definitely trying to give him a lot of attention, and I considered a cuddle toy, as well. My heart is shattered for them both.

We had a chinchilla when I was a kid, we named him Twitch. He lived to be 8. We went on vacation to Hawaii, while away he developed some kind of digestive problem. He just gave up on life and died a week after we came back. It was so sad T_T. He was the best pet we ever had. He loved cuddles and would climb under my shirt and sleep on my chest. His favorite food was dried cranberries. Twitch also loved to shimmy up the back of the china cabinet by pressing his back against the cabinet and her feet and the wall and climb up, he would perch up there watching us and then jump off onto the back of a recliner.
I think my favorite memory of him was how he would terrorize our cats :`D They would sit in a window above his cage with their tails hanging down between the cage and the wall. Twitch would run up to the top level and pull their tails before quickly jumping down to the bottom of the cage. The cats would jump and turn around to look at Twitch, but he would play innocent, when they turned back around he would do it again and again. We would be laughing hysterically watching this.
    I miss him.

Cranberries are a treat you're suppose to give them. We only gave him a few a day as a treat when he was out running. We didn't give it to him as a meal obviously. Would you eat an entire cake for dinner? It's the same concept as giving your dog a treat, its junk food.

One of my chinchillas died in nearly identical circumstances to what you describe. I just found her dead in the cage at age 8 (and on my birthday no less). I ended up here because it's been about 6 weeks and my remaining chinchilla has been doing okay, but is just within the last few days much more vocal. But as far as I can tell, they're happy noises? So I don't know what's up with my chinchilla, but this video actually helped me a lot to know more about why Nibbler may have died. So thank you.

Just found my Chinchilla passed away today. She was 9. Seems a little early so I think she may of had a heart attack too. But I completely understand what you went through (completely normal day, went out to give her food expecting her to be jumping around and smiling like usual but I knew something was wrong when she didn’t start jumping around right when I walked up) I know I had nothing to do with it but I still obviously broke down crying and am still grieving many hours later.

So I lost one of my chinchillas about 3 weeks ago but his brother the one I still have now never seemed to get sad he almost seemed like he got happier after his brother passed, is it possible for a chinchilla to not have to go through a grieving process after losing their sibling?

  • @CG-ym9cu

We have 2 chinchillas. They are in separate cages (one is male and one is female). I took mine to college with me as an emotional support animal, but had to bring him back because it was too hot. The female was shedding horribly. Ripping out fur / shedding violently is a big sign of stress.

I had two chinchillas named Cocoa and Kilo. Cocoa passed away three days ago now. Kilo has barely eaten a thing, doesn't drink, and won't come out to play. She just lies with her stuffed toy, whining. I've tried all of these steps, but no luck. I'm really worried about her. Is there something still that I can do, or should I go on and take her to the vet? I was trying to avoid it because of the expenses, but Kilo is worth all the money in the world to me if it comes down to that.

Just a note - if you put down your pet, don't put them directly together. the stuff they put them down with will still be on them, and you don't want to risk the other one licking it and getting sick. By all means, let them see each other, and (assuming they won't get upset by the scent of the drug they used) even consider letting them smell each other (I find pets avoid the scent though) but with something like that, you have to be extra careful. Just a heads up.

I don't think it's a good idea for a grieving chinchilla since she just lost her friend. It would most likely cause fighting so soon but after they are finished grieving or seem a bit more perkier and you are ready (after the loss of a pet) then you can get another.

    • @screamingllamacake8060
      @screamingllamacake8060 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

CrystalShardsLPS The grieving chinchilla would most likely reject the new one, especially since she's grieving. They'd just fight. If you're going to have 2 chinchillas they need to be together since birth, or at least when they're still young. This is just information I've picked up since working at a pet shop.... ;)

I got 2 chinchillas at 16 or so. Male and female. The female passed away last year < i was unsure of tbe age but older for sure. They had been living togethee for about 8 years. She never would let my boy mate with her bc she had mated before she came to him. So thats the only tension between them. Since i had to do shared parenting my mom would czre for them while i was at my dads and she had found her teeth clenched to thd cage and she had passed. They would snuggle every day. I didnt know what i was doing and im not very good on money. But i play with him and let him out every day i can now. He trusts me and that took years so i dont want to give him away because i know he is safe here. I feel horroble he is alone now. I put a big blanket in his cagw he snuggles when he sleeps now.

haha its okay, i'm not going to buy another, only because there's the whole introduction thing, meaning getting two massive setups to start with, then that one may out live ruby, and then the whole thing will start again :') i have to say Ruby is doing really nicely on her own, but thanks for the suggestion :)
