We moved from California to Salem and I love it here. I agree it depends on where you move from and what you like. Where we lived it was way more expensive with summers that were 6 months long over 100 almost every day. Drought. Too many people, way more crime, lived in an area with a population of 500,000. We live in west salem which is way nicer than salem proper. So many pine trees and green. I hate the sun, love the overcast rainy days. If I never see another palm tree I'll be happy. I don't have allergies, love gardening and the green forests that are right down the street from my house. The hiking is outstanding, there are waterfalls 30 minutes away, and the beach is only an hour away. Earthquakes are no big deal to me, remember I'm from California. Salem is not for everyone but it definitely is for me. ❤

Yay! Glad a fellow Portlander has entered the conversation. It is about perspective and Salem isn’t the right place for everyone and that’s ok! For those who are thinking about moving to Salem, will you share with them what you like most about Salem?
My husband and I moved to Eastern Oregon in the year 2000 to LA Grande. It was ok. We decided to buy a house here because our daughter moved out of the house (ours) that she was renting cheap and moved to California. Rented our to friend's of our daughter. That lasted about a year. So we put up the Craftman up for Sale. It went pretty fast. Bought a red ranch house on acreage in Union. Lovely place. Lived there until the pandemic raised it ugly head. To make this short my Husband passed of Covid JANUARY 2 2021. SO AFTER I RE- MODELED THE OLD HOUSE I SOLD IT ON OCTOBER 2021. BOUGHT A SMALL PLACE IN SALEM IN NOVEMBER 15 2021. AND HERE I AM. WITH ALL MY CATS 🐈!
I'm sorry for your loss. La Grande is a unique part of Oregon and it totally make sense why it might not have been your cup of tea. I'm glad you found a nice spot for you and your kitties in Salem. How did you end up picking Salem as the place to move to?
I'm from Chicago. Its a beautiful, vibrant city, BUT... Do you think you have weather here? You've got to be kidding me. How about snow so deep that you can't open your front door? How about summers so hot and humid that you can't go outside because of the mosquitos? We had torrential rains, flooding, tornados, fog so thick you can't see the car in front of you, wind chill factors of 20 degrees below zero, and frostbite. In the winter the freeways transform into sheets of ice with vehicles skidding uncontrollably and multiple accidents. By Spring cars are covered with dents and what's left of the snow has turned black from car exhaust. It's not unusual to have snow on Easter. To me, Oregon is a paradise.
The main cohort of people who are considering "moving to Salem" (but who also need a video guide to explain the town) are Californians. Relative to the weather that most people in California are accustomed to (especially those from Southern/Central California), Oregon is cold and wet.
This is true. A large segment of my clients are relocating from California. One of the more recent reasons why has come down to insurance, natural disasters and overall affordability. Based on what my clients have to say it's most often times a relatively easy decision to sell their California home, buy a bigger and better home here in Salem. Oregon is similar enough to California where people don't feel like a total fish outta water. I'm surprised by the amount of people who want more rain and chiller days. I totally get it though because I'm a lobster and the sun is my mortal enemy.
I lived in the Felony Flats area of Salem for 4 years. My experiences... Train horns waking you up at 3 AM that echoes throughout the entire city. What brought you to Salem?
@@SalemOR I had to get my son away from his malfunctioning mother. I was seeking peace. Kinda found it. There’s nothing to prove to anyone in Salem. If you’re not incarcerated or recently released or in treatment, and you have paying work and a home, you’re doing better than most.
i have lived in salem Oregon my entire life i don't think that Salem is entirely bad yeah the homeless and druggies are a larger issue but there are good things here too also 1. don't act like doesn't Portland suck too 2. screw central air buy a window air conditioner or a fan not all everyone can afford a house with built in AC I swear if rich people don't stop ruining vintage houses with new boring colorless crap like how is boring brown and whites even a thing old houses have charm, character and history if your life isn't at risk leave it as it is.
You have some valid points. What do you think someone should know about living in Salem that hasn't yet been mentioned?
Moved to Salem Oregon in 2009 🤷🏻♀️
Sweet, whats you're favorite and least favorite thing about the city?
@@SalemOR Least favorite is the crazy drivers in South Salem and my favorite thing 🤔 I haven't been that many places so I will pick Costco because I love the ice cream 🤗
I like Costco too! And I just saw that they have whole pizzas for $10. I've never been more motivated to get a pizza and eat the entire thing in one sitting.
@@SalemOR That's a good deal 🤗
They don’t salt the roads or plow the roads.
You only need to plow when there’s snow, and there is usually no snow. Salt’s great if you love buying new cars every 3 years.
hmm
Tell us your thoughts as a local Salemander. What do you think about the topic?
😀🙂😊
Nothing good ever comes from complaining.
But here you are complaining about people complaining
My transwoman and bigoted aholes and harassed me so much I salem, that I finally had to leave. Never met more shitty despicable people in my life.
Thank you for sharing your perspective and experiences. Where did you end up relocating to?
