I’ve been in Portland for 19 years. Moved here from KS. Portland certainly has problems. Definitely hate the traffic and rent is outrageous. But I’d NEVER move back to KS. Really anywhere with good scenery is going to be expensive. And as far as the weather, I know many people find rainy weather depressing, but I’m in the minority who don’t mind it and actually prefer that over hot/sunny weather.

The apartment prices you mentioned are not typical for Portland. A quick search shows 50 apartments in Northwest Portland for $650 - $999. Some of the taxes you mentioned only apply to earnings over $200,000 per year. In addition to an income tax, Mexico has a 16% sales tax.
I’d love to see those apartments in NW Portland for $650 lol… you sure those were current prices?! Can’t even find a one bedroom in crummy parts of Tigard for under $1,200 last time I checked. After 5 years of living in North Portland ( multnomah county) We have sold our home and moved out of this city. There is no hope for Portland. No leadership. Anarchy, Gender Ideology , Homeless Drug Addicts, Crime, Garbage , High Taxes.. The truth is the City has more money than they know what to do with. Money just disappears and no one is held accountable… Today we are living in Happy Valley , Oregon. Just 30 miles away and what a HUGE difference. Back to Civilization …….🎉

Homelessness and drugs has been a problem in old Town where he was walking around. But the rise in rent is definitely making the homeless problem worse.
That's great news I am so happy for you thanx for sharing. I'm moving out of my apartment because the street is a drug dealing hub and the law doesn't care. My new apartment is closer to work and zero room or reason for homeless to be there.
I live here and I totally understand your reasons for leaving. Portland was a great city 10 years ago, today it's much less than that. I hope it gets better but I also am looking for an exit soon. Thanks for sharing and best of luck on your endeavors.
I moved from Seattle to Portland in the early 90s because it reminded me of how Seattle used to be. By 2003 I saw the same things happening to Portland that happened to Seattle and I got out. The last time I was up visiting friends I had an unhoused person bang on the hood of my car and yell at me for no reason. I'm getting too old to deal with that sort of thing (can't fight, can't run), it gives me high anxiety. I miss my friends but it's hard going back to visit them. I wish I had gone to Mexico or similar but now I'm a little too old to be going where I don't speak the language, all by myself.
@@LoLa-OR live at the border in Del Rio, TX. We are just three miles or so to Mexico. It’s peaceful and quiet. Then you can go to Mexico anytime you like for shopping or entertainment. It’s cheaper there for that.
We left the Portland area after living in the area for 63 years. We wish we could afford to go back. You dislike the rain. We always loved and love the rain,and winter by the fire drinking hot chocolate , wearing thick terry cloth robes. We left so we could retire to Texas on the border to Mexico. Now we live in 90s on up to the 100s temperatures nearly all year, and drought levels 2 and 3. We’d return in a heartbeat if we could afford it. I had a whole umbrella collection, which I don’t even get to use here in Texas. I loved walking in the rain 🌧️ carrying an umbrella and hearing the raindrops hit the top of my umbrella. So soothing. We loved falling asleep to the rain, and I loved driving around in the rain ☔️ hearing the raindrops hitting the top of my car except on the freeway.
Portland’s population is shrinking, not growing. Tens of thousands of people have left in the last few years. They made camping in tents illegally. That’s why you aren’t seeing the homeless.
City looks nicer than I expected. As for your concerns they are par for the course nowadays in most big cities. My sense of it is that things have always pretty much been like this going back a couple of centuries and beyond. At least you have the means to leave. And well we must count our blessings-not being homeless, being of sound mind, physically and mentally healthy, and so on. Life is short. Try to be grateful for the things you have and be happy-even in the midst of high taxes and rainy weather. As a friend once told me, “Things could be much worse.”

I'm born and raised in Portland. Left in 2019 to Bend. After I got my degree I moved back in 2022 and WOW. Portland is just a shell of what it used to be. So sad to see. Probably going to move to AZ real soon.
Why do people say stupid things like "Texas has no income tax" They just charge you taxes on other things, like high property taxes. They all have to get the money from somewhere. Do you think "no income tax states" just don't have any costs? They do.
I get your point on the “money having to come from somewhere”. But I never said those states have no costs. My point is that for high earners or people who consume very little or a combination of both, the taxes are much lower. Look at NBA players or executives for example, they love to go to TX for that reason. Also, if one rents instead of buys, they’re not paying property taxes. Sales tax is in the consumers control in the sense that the more one consumes, the more tax they pay. Buy a Hyundai, pay less taxes than an M Series BMW… hopefully that clarifies my point. For someone making $1000/mo, there's no wiggle room for additional costs, yet they still have basic human needs and are paying the same percentage tax on a purchase as someone making $10,000/mo, for whom there's capacious room for anything, yet the person making $10K/mo is still just one person, and even someone relatively wealthy still can only consume so much. Effectively, with sales tax, the poor pay a much higher percentage of their income than do the wealthy.

You walked right by NW4th & Burnside, the former home of Right 2 Dream Too, a self-managed homeless village and shelter. It sleeps up to 60 people per night, in addition to the 16 people who live there. The annual budget has barely exceeded $60,000. The city forced it to move across the river because they had "plans" for the site. Six years later, it's still an empty lot. There are solutions to the homeless crisis, the City just doesn't want to fund them.
I left Portland in 2022. I blame the residents of Portland for all the troubles, they voted and continue to vote for this. As far as I am concerned they are getting exactly what they deserve.
I live in Louisville, Ky., which has all the same homeless, crime and soaring rents problems to the same degree -- It does not have the problem of an influx. In fact every medium sized city -- Indianapolis, Peoria, Cincinnati, among ones I have recently visited -- has seen surges in gun crimes, street drugs, sidewalk camping and soaring rents. There's no place in the U.S. to flee to to avoid these messes. But there are a lot of cities with far less of the good of Portland.... And re: the giving out of needles -- refraining from doing that caused AIDS to soar. Check into the small town of Austin, Ind. The oh, so moral governor Mike Pence stopped a needle distribution there after addictions soared. The result of Pence's move was that AIDS began wiping the town out. Needles being given out are not done to make being homeless "cool," but as a needed response to save thousands, maybe millions of lives.
I GTFO 7 years ago and it's still one of the best decisions I've ever made. A depressing city six ways to Sunday. It was already sliding into the gutter in 2017 and now it's esconsed in said gutter. It's best years are a wistful memory.
I read about 10 comments and noticed a few say that this is what life is like in big cities. To a certain extent that is true, but I moved here in 1995 and have seen the decline of Portland. Half the businesses downtown have left. While walking down the sidewalk, I see an entire block of nothing but empty windows where businesses used to be and its on almost every block. It is not just in the bad parts either. It is in the heart of downtown where it used to be nicer. A couple of months ago there was a riot at Portland State University and a million dollars worth of damage was done to the college. The same thing happened downtown 4 years ago and Mayor Ted Wheeler sided with the rioters, but all that got him was either pepper sprayed or tear gassed, I forget which one, but I do know that the rioters smashed the windows of the mayors apartment building and tried to go after him. After that, he had to move out of that building. I dont feel safe walking down the sidewalks downtown for a couple of reasons. They have electric scooters you can rent. Young people ride them on the sidewalks downtown and speed very fast as if they own the sidewalk and they dont even watch out for others it seems. One day while stepping outside a restaurant I almost got run over. Several years ago a bus driver told me that a pedestrian accidentally got pushed into the street by a speeding scooter and a bus ran over her legs and amputated her legs. And I heard the person speeding scooter, kept going! As for me, I have been assaulted several times out here. One was an attempted robbery. The other times were zombies on drugs that targeted me for no reason. Last but not least I ride public transportation and the busses and trains always smell like poop. That being said, if you can afford a car and to live in a nice neighborhood and can stay away or live in a city outside of Portland, then that is a better situation, but I agree with the fellow that made this video. Portland is depressing.
No doubt Kimberly, I had a recent comment saying “oh no, they lost one Starbucks”. But so, so many businesses have simply abandoned Portland. Not worth the risk and damages. Portland in 1995 was a paradise. It had moderate political leadership and police who could engage in policing without being called 'racist'. But a neo-marxism took over like a cancer in the last 10 years and the city has been destroyed like every other left-wing west-coast city...LA, SanFran, Seattle, VancBC, etc.

It used to be a great place to visit. My favorite vacation spot. The city is totally different now. It's run down, and it's people seem stressed out. I don't enjoy it anymore.

Just 10 minutes from down town 2bdrms are $1700. The city is about 2 million in population. There is 90% of great areas to live in. To offset income tax that it's not huge there's NO sales tax in Oregon!

I watched this video and I’m still interested in moving to Portland! I live in Oxnard, Ca, a beach city in Ventura county, an hour north of LA (look it up) to get a “nice” one bedroom apartment with its own washer & dryer and apossible garage in my city is anywhere from $2500-$3500 a month! I have found an entire house, with 2-3 bedrooms for an average price of $2400! So saying Portland is expensive is incomparable to where I live. I have been to Oregon, have done extensive research on the living there and I’m still not scared away. Lol 🤷🏻♀️ call me crazy, naive or whatever, but my BF, and our 3 dogs and cats can have a way better life living in Portland then here in Oxnard. 😅 every city, even Playa Del Carmen has their issues. It’s a give and take. No offense to you but you seem biased towards your home town and really, I’m the same way towards my city. I grew up here most of my life and besides the beach and sunny weather (when it’s not gloomy for 6 months out of the year) I’m over it here. It’s a small town in my opinion, about 300,000 people and not great work opportunities here. I don’t want to live in LA cuz it’s LA! The politics in CA are way worse than Portland. Some people love it here and good for them, I’m ready for something new and different.

Moved to Portland from Alabama and all I can say is that Portland could literally get nuked today and I’d still rather live their than Alabama, so much more accepting, less hot, way more stuff to do, mountains, walkability, and the rent in Portland isn’t that bad, I looked on Zillow the other day out of curiosity and I found plenty of apartments (like 1000) for less than $1500 a month
There are nice areas with apartments by PSU that are far cheaper and are close to transportation and the Willamette River. You can get a one bedroom with a large walk-in/storage closet, kitchen with full sized appliances and plenty of cupboards, living room, amenities include a super nice workout area with a yoga room, a very nice cafe area with a large open outdoor space with barbecuers and gaslit decorative fires. The 20th floor has a view, a large gathering space with a piano, 2 large tv's, etc. The rent is $1750, so I have no clue what he's talking about with the rent being over $3,000 for a small apartment. There are many nice locations that are far less rent than that, and then there are very high rent areas.
I want to push back on this but I won't. A lot of your reasons for leaving are nearly self-inflicted exposure to common problems found in every city. You chose to just hangout in the exact areas to avoid? I could go on, but thanks for posting this video, it'll likely bring rent prices down in NW. keep at it!!

Before the pandemic more than 300 thousand people use to come to downtown Portland to work everyday.It's a small fraction of that in 2025. I moved to Portland in 2012 from Atlanta,Georgia.I hated the heat and mosquitoes in Georgia.Some of my favorite stops closed down and I hate that. Yardhouse restaurant on 6th Avenue downtown and Tom Billiards were my favorite spots. May move back to the South as I get older and closer to death.But I love the weather in Portland.

I find much of the spirit of the "old" Portland now across the river in Vancouver WA...at least in their central older area. Oh, and downtown Camas very cool too.
Mid 90s and being mid teens my friends and I would take the bus from Vancouver to Portland all the time and go skateboard Burnside park and then head across the bridge to skate downtown. We would see crazy stuff but never felt in danger or anything happened to us, if you know the old tri-met interstate 5 bus from Vancouver to Portland, I think the Max runs that route now but that was where are the craziness went down from every type of people on whatever was at, especially winter time when it got dark early. I went to downtown Portland a year ago with a friend and the city was a cesspool, horrible to see how dirty and nasty it was and all those businesses shut down now, I do miss the 90s, early 2000s Portland and 101.1 kufo with Dog Face & Pork Chop radio station.
Man… those were the DAYS…talk about some nostalgia!! Me and my brother used to take Trimet downtown and hit Burnside, skate, go to punk shows at the Crystal Ballroom, and never had any real problems aside from bumps and bruises from the mosh pit and trying to kick flip the 5 stair 😅. I don’t think it’ll ever be like that again… but the memories are priceless. Thanks for sharing!

Many tents were cleared out once they city decided to enforce the overnight camping law back in May of this year. They even posted notices about the law. However, the tents have returned in early August.

People go forward and you going actually backwards, Mexico is a place to visit not to live !! Specially for someone coming from the USA. It was such a different place back then. Almost unrecognizable now. I kind of like how in other big cities around the world that hasn’t happened yet, at least not to that degree. Portland borders Washington State, which has no income tax, but if you live in Washington and work downtown, you still have to pay the Oregon income tax.
These issues are starting to hit Boise. It’s nuts. So many people moved there and to Arizona from Cali and the PNW and just voted all those issues into existence in their new city/state.

Okay, the first reason for leaving can be vastly uninformed. I currently live in a 700 sqft apartment with a backyard in the heart of Northwest Portland for $1600. When I first moved to Portland I had a decent studio apartment near PSU for $1300. Now i am looking for another living situation and am seeing decent sized apartments (300-400 sqft) for $1000 and even less. There are many good areas around Portland with good nightlife, safety, and places to eat for an affordable price. Respectfully, your next point may be taken as a bigger problem than advertised. I've lived in SW Portland and have spent alot of time in Old Town and Chinatown (which is where a lot of homeless people stay) and YES there is a level of danger that many people from the suburbs (like myself) are not accustomed to. However, there are many people who are just down on their luck and arguably are good people. I now live in NW, which is considerably less dangerous than most areas. There are still a good amount of suspicious people but DEFENITLEY not a crazy amount that makes me or my girlfriend afraid to leave our apartment. To be honest, local government has not done the right things to help these people and it begins with housing these homeless people!

Why is that hard to believe? In most Latin countries most own their homes, US is the only country that wants you paying for a home for 30 years, that’s insane…but that’s the American way.
you have full right to move to a place where you can be happy. on the contrast my partner and i recently fled florida away from desantisland and we have a nice apt here in east portland with a secure car garage and its actually cheaper rent wise here than what we had in tampa, this city also has a wonder metro service that is trimet where you can easily manuever and get to any subrub the grid is simple and effective. where tampa has the most laughable transportation ive ever seen for a well known city. traffic wise its about the same, also with homelessness my job requires me to go a lot of places around the county and out of the two interactions where homeless were present at my work area it has been docile and nothing bad they had no problem with moving. would i feel safe walking around the city by myself no but that is with anywhere since ive have some troubly situations occur when i was by myself in public when i was younger.

@@vannee2426 I don’t think it’s quite that simple but yes, SOME Mexicans are upset by the influx of gringos. Many however, have been welcoming and friendly. Keep in mind too, that the property owners (Mexicans) who are jacking up the rents are to blame as well. From my experience rent of course is gonna be expensive because you are in the city and it doesn't justify the high rent and that is making the homelessness getting out of control
Yea I think it’s a little more complex than that but that’s definitely a major component of what’s going on. I don’t see an easy solution unfortunately. I don’t think anyone does. @theropemonster I know but the reason homelessness has gotten worse Is because not only the high rent but the landlords and the real estate companies rasing them because of all the tech companies moving in thus increasing the pay of the rent because people are bringing in more income but that doesn't give them any rights to up the rent

HEY --Time to buy something in PDC ! Used to visit Portland on an oil tanker back in the late 80's, Remember all the pubs and live music. SURE LOOKS DIFFERENT NOW ! Am lucky I bought my apto here in Brasil in 2022 so I don't have a rent payment. With everything ; food, gas for the car, eating out, water- paying about $600 usd Don't know what a 2br apto would cost in MEX but here in BR it's commonly as little as $25,000, that's along the coastal cities from south to north. Actually the north is somewhat cheaper, I just remembered an apto just south of Recife in an ok area that tends to flood for $$16,000 ! I'd live there ! Has dirt streets. Poor lady has been trying to sell it for at least 6 months. The south is like living in Europe and is more expensive but not terribly more, full of Italians and Germans and eastern Europeans- Ukrainians, Russians, Czech

The streets downtown are empty where years ago they were vibrant and full of people working and living downtown. It looks like a ghost town now. Thousandz of drug addicted people have been forced to exist on the streets of formerly beautiful neighborhoods on the east side. The working people who used to work an lived ther have died off along with the manufacturing jobs that were once widely available. I lived in the City of Roses from 1974 until 2021. Nobody grows roses anymore by the way...Wokeness and wierdness and crime are all that is left it seems. An abundanceof wide open strip bars, sex clubs, and pot shops, along with expensive coffee, are the only businesses left it seems. Crime rates are off the hook. Schools are the worst in the nation with mostly subsidised programs barely supported by federal grants and insane taxes. The superintendant of Portland Public Schools makes $300k per year and the graduation rate is the lowest comparable to rural poor southern states. The city and county bigwigs make bank while arguing about pronouns and tampons while neglecting basic academics. I reall y grieve the loss of what was once named The Most Liveable City in America, and one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Nothing in Texas could ever compare to the city, and culture, tht was wasted in Portland. But San Antonio is so much finer in many, many ways. God blessed Texas, and Portland is forever cursed. Goodbye, my beloved City of Roses. I cry for you now...

I volunteered in an elementary school in Salem for awhile and that’s actually what inspired me to leave the entire country, that’s how bad it was. They weren’t when I left. They were full. When I filmed this I had already been gone for years. Tell me… how were the sidewalks and streets in 2020 and 2021? Step on any feces or used needles, or did you just avoid it altogether? Any way you slice it, there are better places to live with more reasonable cost of living and safety including lower homicide rates. Things may have improved in Portland from the lows, but they have a long ways to go. Thanks for watching

Why did you come back? Just to badmouth the city? If you live in Portland proper, then it can be depressing to see the homeless tents and the higher than high rentals. Move outside of the city and your viewpoint is completely different. Well, I know it may not seem like a lot to people in US Cities, but Portland had 73 homicides in 2023 (recorded), whereas is in the entire state of Azuay, Ecuador, where I spent most of 2023, there were 7. Only 2 of those were in Cuenca, the city where I lived… so… yea. And I paid $260usd/month for a beautiful house near Cajas N.P. there. Safer and cheaper. I’m from Portland, so it’s “my town” too. I’ve been in Portland for 19 years. Moved here from KS. Portland certainly has problems. Definitely hate the traffic and rent is outrageous. But I’d NEVER move back to KS. Really anywhere with good scenery is going to be expensive. And as far as the weather, I know many people find rainy weather depressing, but I’m in the minority who don’t mind it and actually prefer that over hot/sunny weather.

The apartment prices you mentioned are not typical for Portland. A quick search shows 50 apartments in Northwest Portland for $650 - $999. Some of the taxes you mentioned only apply to earnings over $200,000 per year. In addition to an income tax, Mexico has a 16% sales tax.
I’d love to see those apartments in NW Portland for $650 lol… you sure those were current prices?! Can’t even find a one bedroom in crummy parts of Tigard for under $1,200 last time I checked.
Even with the sales tax in Mexico it’s so much cheaper here… why do you think the amount of US citizens moving to MX rose by 60% in 2022?

I moved from Seattle to Portland in the early 90s because it reminded me of how Seattle used to be. By 2003 I saw the same things happening to Portland that happened to Seattle and I got out. The last time I was up visiting friends I had an unhoused person bang on the hood of my car and yell at me for no reason. I'm getting too old to deal with that sort of thing (can't fight, can't run), it gives me high anxiety. I miss my friends but it's hard going back to visit them. I wish I had gone to Mexico or similar but now I'm a little too old to be going where I don't speak the language, all by myself.
People disappear in Mexico all the time, you haven't missed a thing, life is cheap there.

@@LoLa-OR live at the border in Del Rio, TX. We are just three miles or so to Mexico. It’s peaceful and quiet. Then you can go to Mexico anytime you like for shopping or entertainment. It’s cheaper there for that.

I had a whole umbrella collection, which I don’t even get to use here in Texas. I loved walking in the rain 🌧️ carrying an umbrella and hearing the raindrops hit the top of my umbrella. So soothing.
We loved falling asleep to the rain, and I loved driving around in the rain ☔️ hearing the raindrops hitting the top of my car except on the freeway.
I lived in Portland my lifetime sold in my family for it ruins everything it delays everything and you can't have fun in it

Portland’s population is shrinking, not growing. Tens of thousands of people have left in the last few years. They made camping in tents illegally. That’s why you aren’t seeing the homeless.
City looks nicer than I expected. As for your concerns they are par for the course nowadays in most big cities. My sense of it is that things have always pretty much been like this going back a couple of centuries and beyond. At least you have the means to leave. And well we must count our blessings-not being homeless, being of sound mind, physically and mentally healthy, and so on. Life is short. Try to be grateful for the things you have and be happy-even in the midst of high taxes and rainy weather. As a friend once told me, “Things could be much worse.”

Why do people say stupid things like "Texas has no income tax" They just charge you taxes on other things, like high property taxes.
They all have to get the money from somewhere. Do you think "no income tax states" just don't have any costs? They do.
I get your point on the “money having to come from somewhere”. But I never said those states have no costs. My point is that for high earners or people who consume very little or a combination of both, the taxes are much lower. Look at NBA players or executives for example, they love to go to TX for that reason. Also, if one rents instead of buys, they’re not paying property taxes. Sales tax is in the consumers control in the sense that the more one consumes, the more tax they pay. Buy a Hyundai, pay less taxes than an M Series BMW… hopefully that clarifies my point. High property taxes, sales tax and highway tolls. Plus you can't walk around Texas so you are burning a lot of money in gas too!
Something else people don’t consider is home insurance costs in the state. Texas is 2nd highest in that area.

For someone making $1000/mo, there's no wiggle room for additional costs, yet they still have basic human needs and are paying the same percentage tax on a purchase as someone making $10,000/mo, for whom there's capacious room for anything, yet the person making $10K/mo is still just one person, and even someone relatively wealthy still can only consume so much. Effectively, with sales tax, the poor pay a much higher percentage of their income than do the wealthy.

It took decades too recover from the most extreme case of "homesickness" in human history for the city of roses! When I die bury my body in the carolinas.....but bury my ❤ in Portland Ore.
You walked right by NW4th & Burnside, the former home of Right 2 Dream Too, a self-managed homeless village and shelter. It sleeps up to 60 people per night, in addition to the 16 people who live there. The annual budget has barely exceeded $60,000. The city forced it to move across the river because they had "plans" for the site. Six years later, it's still an empty lot. There are solutions to the homeless crisis, the City just doesn't want to fund them.

I live in Louisville, Ky., which has all the same homeless, crime and soaring rents problems to the same degree -- It does not have the problem of an influx. In fact every medium sized city -- Indianapolis, Peoria, Cincinnati, among ones I have recently visited -- has seen surges in gun crimes, street drugs, sidewalk camping and soaring rents. There's no place in the U.S. to flee to to avoid these messes. But there are a lot of cities with far less of the good of Portland.... And re: the giving out of needles -- refraining from doing that caused AIDS to soar. Check into the small town of Austin, Ind. The oh, so moral governor Mike Pence stopped a needle distribution there after addictions soared. The result of Pence's move was that AIDS began wiping the town out. Needles being given out are not done to make being homeless "cool," but as a needed response to save thousands, maybe millions of lives.

I read about 10 comments and noticed a few say that this is what life is like in big cities. To a certain extent that is true, but I moved here in 1995 and have seen the decline of Portland. Half the businesses downtown have left. While walking down the sidewalk, I see an entire block of nothing but empty windows where businesses used to be and its on almost every block. It is not just in the bad parts either. It is in the heart of downtown where it used to be nicer. A couple of months ago there was a riot at Portland State University and a million dollars worth of damage was done to the college. The same thing happened downtown 4 years ago and Mayor Ted Wheeler sided with the rioters, but all that got him was either pepper sprayed or tear gassed, I forget which one, but I do know that the rioters smashed the windows of the mayors apartment building and tried to go after him. After that, he had to move out of that building. I dont feel safe walking down the sidewalks downtown for a couple of reasons. They have electric scooters you can rent. Young people ride them on the sidewalks downtown and speed very fast as if they own the sidewalk and they dont even watch out for others it seems. One day while stepping outside a restaurant I almost got run over. Several years ago a bus driver told me that a pedestrian accidentally got pushed into the street by a speeding scooter and a bus ran over her legs and amputated her legs. And I heard the person speeding scooter, kept going! As for me, I have been assaulted several times out here. One was an attempted robbery. The other times were zombies on drugs that targeted me for no reason. Last but not least I ride public transportation and the busses and trains always smell like poop. That being said, if you can afford a car and to live in a nice neighborhood and can stay away or live in a city outside of Portland, then that is a better situation, but I agree with the fellow that made this video. Portland is depressing.
No doubt Kimberly, I had a recent comment saying “oh no, they lost one Starbucks”. But so, so many businesses have simply abandoned Portland. Not worth the risk and damages. Portland in 1995 was a paradise. It had moderate political leadership and police who could engage in policing without being called 'racist'. Just 10 minutes from down town 2bdrms are $1700. The city is about 2 million in population. There is 90% of great areas to live in. To offset income tax that it's not huge there's NO sales tax in Oregon!

I watched this video and I’m still interested in moving to Portland! I live in Oxnard, Ca, a beach city in Ventura county, an hour north of LA (look it up) to get a “nice” one bedroom apartment with its own washer & dryer and apossible garage in my city is anywhere from $2500-$3500 a month! I have found an entire house, with 2-3 bedrooms for an average price of $2400! So saying Portland is expensive is incomparable to where I live. I have been to Oregon, have done extensive research on the living there and I’m still not scared away. Lol 🤷🏻♀️ call me crazy, naive or whatever, but my BF, and our 3 dogs and cats can have a way better life living in Portland then here in Oxnard. 😅 every city, even Playa Del Carmen has their issues. It’s a give and take. No offense to you but you seem biased towards your home town and really, I’m the same way towards my city. I grew up here most of my life and besides the beach and sunny weather (when it’s not gloomy for 6 months out of the year) I’m over it here. It’s a small town in my opinion, about 300,000 people and not great work opportunities here. I don’t want to live in LA cuz it’s LA! The politics in CA are way worse than Portland. Some people love it here and good for them, I’m ready for something new and different.

Apparently you didn’t get the memo that literally MILLIONS of US citizens are moving to places in Mexico such as San Miguel de Allende, Playa Del Carmen, Puerto Vallarta, Queretaro and CDMX BECAUSE OF THE REASONS I LEFT PORTLAND. Moved to Portland from Alabama and all I can say is that Portland could literally get nuked today and I’d still rather live their than Alabama, so much more accepting, less hot, way more stuff to do, mountains, walkability, and the rent in Portland isn’t that bad, I looked on Zillow the other day out of curiosity and I found plenty of apartments (like 1000) for less than $1500 a month
There are nice areas with apartments by PSU that are far cheaper and are close to transportation and the Willamette River. You can get a one bedroom with a large walk-in/storage closet, kitchen with full sized appliances and plenty of cupboards, living room, amenities include a super nice workout area with a yoga room, a very nice cafe area with a large open outdoor space with barbecuers and gaslit decorative fires. The 20th floor has a view, a large gathering space with a piano, 2 large tv's, etc. The rent is $1750, so I have no clue what he's talking about with the rent being over $3,000 for a small apartment. There are many nice locations that are far less rent than that, and then there are very high rent areas.

Before the pandemic more than 300 thousand people use to come to downtown Portland to work everyday.It's a small fraction of that in 2025. I moved to Portland in 2012 from Atlanta,Georgia.I hated the heat and mosquitoes in Georgia.Some of my favorite stops closed down and I hate that. Yardhouse restaurant on 6th Avenue downtown and Tom Billiards were my favorite spots. May move back to the South as I get older and closer to death.But I love the weather in Portland.

Mid 90s and being mid teens my friends and I would take the bus from Vancouver to Portland all the time and go skateboard Burnside park and then head across the bridge to skate downtown. We would see crazy stuff but never felt in danger or anything happened to us, if you know the old tri-met interstate 5 bus from Vancouver to Portland, I think the Max runs that route now but that was where are the craziness went down from every type of people on whatever was at, especially winter time when it got dark early. I went to downtown Portland a year ago with a friend and the city was a cesspool, horrible to see how dirty and nasty it was and all those businesses shut down now, I do miss the 90s, early 2000s Portland and 101.1 kufo with Dog Face & Pork Chop radio station.
Man… those were the DAYS…talk about some nostalgia!! Me and my brother used to take Trimet downtown and hit Burnside, skate, go to punk shows at the Crystal Ballroom, and never had any real problems aside from bumps and bruises from the mosh pit and trying to kick flip the 5 stair 😅. I don’t think it’ll ever be like that again… but the memories are priceless. Thanks for sharing!

Many tents were cleared out once they city decided to enforce the overnight camping law back in May of this year. They even posted notices about the law. However, the tents have returned in early August.

Okay, the first reason for leaving can be vastly uninformed. I currently live in a 700 sqft apartment with a backyard in the heart of Northwest Portland for $1600. When I first moved to Portland I had a decent studio apartment near PSU for $1300. Now i am looking for another living situation and am seeing decent sized apartments (300-400 sqft) for $1000 and even less. There are many good areas around Portland with good nightlife, safety, and places to eat for an affordable price. Respectfully, your next point may be taken as a bigger problem than advertised. I've lived in SW Portland and have spent alot of time in Old Town and Chinatown (which is where a lot of homeless people stay) and YES there is a level of danger that many people from the suburbs (like myself) are not accustomed to. However, there are many people who are just down on their luck and arguably are good people. I now live in NW, which is considerably less dangerous than most areas. There are still a good amount of suspicious people but DEFENITLEY not a crazy amount that makes me or my girlfriend afraid to leave our apartment. To be honest, local government has not done the right things to help these people and it begins with housing these homeless people!

you have full right to move to a place where you can be happy. on the contrast my partner and i recently fled florida away from desantisland and we have a nice apt here in east portland with a secure car garage and its actually cheaper rent wise here than what we had in tampa, this city also has a wonder metro service that is trimet where you can easily manuever and get to any subrub the grid is simple and effective. where tampa has the most laughable transportation ive ever seen for a well known city. traffic wise its about the same, also with homelessness my job requires me to go a lot of places around the county and out of the two interactions where homeless were present at my work area it has been docile and nothing bad they had no problem with moving. would i feel safe walking around the city by myself no but that is with anywhere since ive have some troubly situations occur when i was by myself in public when i was younger.

From my experience rent of course is gonna be expensive because you are in the city and it doesn't justify the high rent and that is making the homelessness getting out of control

@theropemonster I know but the reason homelessness has gotten worse Is because not only the high rent but the landlords and the real estate companies rasing them because of all the tech companies moving in thus increasing the pay of the rent because people are bringing in more income but that doesn't give them any rights to up the rent

I mean, there are apartments that expensive ($3200!) but they are not typical. Not even in the NorthWest/Nob Hill area. So, to be frank, my very first impression from the first couple minutes of your video is that you are actually seeking reasons to be displeased with Portland. Which is fine of course. You obviously don't need to justify yourself and your tastes to me. Just wanted to note that not everything you are saying is super accurate.

The streets downtown are empty where years ago they were vibrant and full of people working and living downtown. It looks like a ghost town now. Thousandz of drug addicted people have been forced to exist on the streets of formerly beautiful neighborhoods on the east side. The working people who used to work an lived ther have died off along with the manufacturing jobs that were once widely available. I lived in the City of Roses from 1974 until 2021. Nobody grows roses anymore by the way...Wokeness and wierdness and crime are all that is left it seems. An abundanceof wide open strip bars, sex clubs, and pot shops, along with expensive coffee, are the only businesses left it seems. Crime rates are off the hook. Schools are the worst in the nation with mostly subsidised programs barely supported by federal grants and insane taxes. The superintendant of Portland Public Schools makes $300k per year and the graduation rate is the lowest comparable to rural poor southern states. The city and county bigwigs make bank while arguing about pronouns and tampons while neglecting basic academics. I reall y grieve the loss of what was once named The Most Liveable City in America, and one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Nothing in Texas could ever compare to the city, and culture, tht was wasted in Portland. But San Antonio is so much finer in many, many ways. God blessed Texas, and Portland is forever cursed. Goodbye, my beloved City of Roses. I cry for you now...

I volunteered in an elementary school in Salem for awhile and that’s actually what inspired me to leave the entire country, that’s how bad it was. They weren’t when I left. They were full. When I filmed this I had already been gone for years. Tell me… how were the sidewalks and streets in 2020 and 2021? Step on any feces or used needles, or did you just avoid it altogether? Any way you slice it, there are better places to live with more reasonable cost of living and safety including lower homicide rates. Things may have improved in Portland from the lows, but they have a long ways to go. Thanks for watching

😅… just got done with beach volleyball and walked home. Felt pretty safe lol. The “murder rate” in Mexico is a ridiculous stat because so many of the murders are cartel vs cartel and on the outskirts and in the mountains. Like Acapulco having the “highest murder rate in the world”… 98% of those murders were in the mountains well outside of the city. Food for thought

Why did you come back? Just to badmouth the city? If you live in Portland proper, then it can be depressing to see the homeless tents and the higher than high rentals. Move outside of the city and your viewpoint is completely different.
I think you’ll find that, no matter the state, if you live in a well-populated urban city, you’ll a lot of the same problems that you whine and complain about in this video. “Oh, I’ve got the sniffles because it’s raining and more specifically, because I’m in Portland.”

Well, I know it may not seem like a lot to people in US Cities, but Portland had 73 homicides in 2023 (recorded), whereas is in the entire state of Azuay, Ecuador, where I spent most of 2023, there were 7. Only 2 of those were in Cuenca, the city where I lived… so… yea. And I paid $260usd/month for a beautiful house near Cajas N.P. there. Safer and cheaper. I’m from Portland, so it’s “my town” too. But I had enough and there are better places to live. Thanks for watching edubb.
