What I like about Salem is that it's about an hour from anywhere and a quiet place to come home to. Big city amenities are an hour north to Portland. The beaches are an hour West. Like university vibes/sports? An hour south to Eugene. Need Mountain air? Half hour east to the foothills of the cascades!
Salem seems to be still adjusting to being the capitol city. I love the suburban feel. Just wish the downtown were more accessible for those of us with mobility issues. (No parking to speak of, weird placement of disabled parking spots and the need to walk blocks to get to the shops you want to explore). Other than that, we love it here.
@@SalemOR Recently was Beaverton then Sherwood, but before that Eastern WA, and before that Bay Area, California. Found our forever home here in Salem and are through moving around.
Nice video and I agree with most of your comparisons. As a Eugene resident for 36 years and a frequent flier, I would actually reverse or at least neutralize your comments about air travel. These days, we rarely fly out of Portland. The Eugene airport is very convenient and has many more flights than 20 years ago. True, there are much fewer non-stop flights, e.g. to the East Coast. The prices from Eugene are generally no more expensive than PDX. I think Eugene is a better place to live for people who fly frequently. PDX is not convenient for people living in Salem and the traffic issues are significant. By comparison, EUG is a breeze.
Good analysis of both cities. I've lived in both, as well as in Springfield, just east of Eugene. One thing to point out is that Eugene also has an airport (EUG), with access to many major airlines that also serve PDX. It is a much more convenient travel option compared to the drive from Salem to PDX. More info: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eugene_Airport
Great feedback and additional info. Yes- Eugene has an airport that can shuttle you up to PDX. Anything else I missed about the similarities or differences between Eugene and Salem?
Raised in Salem and worked in Eugene for years. Both have some nice areas (you saw many of them in this video). I'd look elsewhere if you're a family type. Salem is gangs, drug related property crimes, and homelessness. Eugene is hippies, drug related property crimes, and homelessness. Take your pick...

Rural life in Oregon is wonderful, I have lived here for 25 years it's very safe, great neighbors, good weather but it's not for everyone. I wouldn't live in Eugene, Salem or Portland, but we are all different, i wish all of you joy in life.
Sheesh, I should have left Eugene long ago and Salem sounds more my personality. Eugene has a rare pocket of quiet here and there particularly in the south part of town but it is not a calming environment overall.

If you're considering moving to Oregon p[lease don't. Our market is already thoroughly wrecked by Californians.
I shall cancel out this comment with a, "I welcome Californian's and all others to Oregon".
