I moved here from Southern California. I wouldn't move back to Cali now. I've lived in other states as well. At first it had a small town feel but not anymore. It seems like there has not been much economic growth in Oregon for a long time. I think it has hurt this state and generations of people. I feel sorry for young ones here that have no way to leave. Hard to get away. Not much to do and not enough decent jobs. Other than little businesses there are state jobs, fast food, and dispensaries. Unfortunately, a big tech corporation that we expected to come to Oregon decided to go to Texas. There are some pretty trails to hike but it rains 6 months out of the year which can get really depressing. Time at the beach is very limited because of the weather. People want and need to do other things. The Salem-Keizer school district here has cut 73 million dollars out of their budget which is going to really hurt the schools and students while our property taxes for it keep going up. All around it's a depressed state, especially for young ones who have aspirations and hope for their future. Oregon doesn't have much to offer them.

I like your videos with attitude. I've lived in Salem area for 50 years. Your descriptions sum it up pretty well. But as I have read in other comments here, I agree the best option is to avoid Salem all together.😵‍💫

Hi Clarity! We live in Caimbridge neighborhood- we moved here about three years ago and love this neighborhood! But I wanted to let you know that one of the things we love is that we can easily and quickly walk to Trader Joe’s and surrounding businesses via Hilfiker Park!!! So you don’t really need to drive to live here🌸 We love your channel and are learning so much about Salem thanks to you! Wish we would have had your expertise when we were trying to navigate home buying in 2021, but are happy we ended up in such a wonderful neighborhood!

Would you be able to have backyard chickens in Salem? Or would you need to go to one of these towns outskirtting Salem?

Hii, 25 yr old- all 25 in Salem, some food places I suggest is gamberettis, noble wave, Gilgamesh, Chiras, basil & board (sunset- rooftop only- drinks👎🏼) bars- Alibi, half penny, half court, south lib, side hustle, W. Wallace, the hitching post. Breakfast- toast & jam(it’s small & bad location but good) food carts- the yard, checkpoint 221, beehive station. Side note- Ross dress 4 less on Lancaster is best one! Hope this helps!

I just got back from scouting Salem, Corvallis and Eugene. I’ve watched many of your videos (so helpful for my trip, BTW), but I had not seen this video. I targeted Faye Wright and ended up in Alderbrook by chance and loved the trees and homes there. Definitely high on our list!

Do you know that Keizer used to be a neighborhood of Salem. It was incorporated as its own town on Nov. 2, 1982.

Yay! Such a fair and balanced description of Old Salem. Lots of good, some bad, but, I would say, most of Salem is somewhere in the middle in all spheres, somewhere between those two very different, extremely opposite poles.

Sounds lovely. I'm from a rural central Illinois area and our winters are much different.

I wonder if Napa, California has the same considerable number of homeless people wandering the streets as Salem has. Not infrequently, you’ll see a freight or Amtrak train 11:28 11:28 stopped on the tracks that cut through Salem, blocking traffic for hours over considerable distances going north and south after some homeless person has deliberately stepped in front of a train to end it all for themselves. Why not take a look at the real Salem, the good, the bad and the just plain downright sickening? Salem was once a really nice town. But let’s be honest: it was but is no more.

Does the hourly wages match the cost of living

I am looking to relocate don't know why it just screamed at me to go there. Anyhoot, is this a livable place for a single income with not much experience and not degree? Are the people willing to take chances and train on site and hire before getting there

Coming from Portland, Salem must seem boring for you. But I hate shopping so Salem isn't bad for me.

Willamette Center which used to be Lancaster Mall (which I still call it), and they have Nordstrom Store there. I've lived in Salem since 1980. I have three grown kids, I'm divorced now and I am a writer and love to fix my raw organic food. Being younger has to be harder. I love Salem.

Yes. Big Time. And the drivers ? Pound for pound, the worst anywhere. An ambulance driver's quote : "That's a fair statement."

Though we have quite a few dark days during the winter, it's the reason we have a coffee shop on almost every corner :)

I lived there for five winters. My former home was on a hill on Titan Dr NW and about 100’ above the snow line. It was not uncommon to have 18” of heavy snow and a couple of blocks down the hill it is solid rain that can glaze over the asphalt. I once couldn’t get up the steep hill to my house. I stopped in the grocery store parking lot and chained up my suv. I kept them on for 3 weeks as the weather was one snowfall after another. McMenimans gets big 👍🏼 from me.

We’re currently in western Kentucky. Way off the beaten path. The weather is generally quite nice. Humidity can sometimes get a bit sticky. Our small city only has about 800 other souls. About 20 minutes from Paducah and 2 1/2 hours from Nashville. Keep up the good work. I’m a new subscriber. 😊
