@@SalemOR I like that the bus station is a 2 minute walk and I can go anywhere. Also basically every bus goes downtown..so whatever bus I'm on take me home. I like the mall and all the delicious food that downtown has. It's great they have a dollar tree down here too. I'm right next to the riverfront Park which has lots of different things going on. They have music shows and play movies. There is a few second hand stores when you want to go thrift shopping. There is a liquor store and tons of bars. For hanging out or eating dancing gambling. I suppose the bad is..my husband hates the parking situation. Basically you got to fight for a spot or pay $80 for a parking garage.. the parking garage is a few blocks away. Sometimes there are issues of crazy people and the homeless. There are three bars right next to me so I do have to pay attention so I do not step in barf. I really don't know what else to say I just really enjoy living down here if anybody has any questions feel free to ask Oh there is no weed store downtown unfortunately
This is a great list of pros and cons! I really appreciate you writing these out. Have you always lived in downtown Salem? If not, how did you end up picking downtown over a neighborhood?
@@SalemOR Well since I don't drive I end up downtown because I use the bus system and the station is downtown. So I use to have to always transfer to another bus. I don't have to ride multiple bus much anymore because I live downtown. I have always liked downtown. I use to work in the mall when I was a teenager and a sandwich shop and other places in the the 90s. My Chihuahua loves to walk around downtown and there are plenty of other people walking their dogs. It's great for socializing your pup. Most bars have great food and outdoor seating and the mall let's people bring theirs dogs inside. I left Salem last year and came back this year. My husband had to work out at the coast. When we moved back I desperately wanted to live downtown. I found an amazing apartment complex. It's adorable and affordable. I did end up with a studio. We are waiting for a one bedroom. I was just lucky they had one open. My husband likes it because everything is included in the rent. The power the high-speed internet water garbage everything. It's under 1000$. It's really amazing. Yeah the parking is just something he has to to deal with. But there is a private parking lot behind our building that I need to call to see how much it is to get a space. My complex does have a garage..but it only has like 20 spots and the waiting list is long.
Solid info, thanks for sharing! I also love how many dogs are downtown, they all seems so sweet and happy. How did you end up finding such a good deal for your apartment?
South Blocks seems incredibly expensive now. It does have a great location, parking and of course you can have your pets, but overall I am shocked at how they can charge so much for rent. What do you think is the biggest change/difference from living downtown to living in S Salem?
@@SalemOR, I definitely don't hang out downtown as much as I used to. I love downtown and supporting local businesses, but since I live a little farther away, I don't visit as often. I love the home I have made, and I like being there, too, but sometimes, I miss the buzz of living downtown.
I have lived in Salem MOST of my life. I have lived in Alaska, California, Hawaii, Indiana, and even London, England. But I always come back to Salem. To me Salem has always meant home. I have always wanted to live in downtown Salem. That always seemed really cool to me. Some of the historic houses we have in the downtown area tend to be really pretty. I was so excited when I found out that they were turning the old Nordstrum's building into a new apartment complex. It would have been better, in my opinion, if they had just converted the old store into an apartment complex. And it would have even been better if you could access the mall from the apartment complex. But, after I found out that the new complex was out of my price range, I was seriously bummed. (Small note: Salem used to have a trolley system. We had one that was horse drawn, then when Salem became "electrified", we had electric trollies. I have contacted my counsel man about bring the trolly system back to Salem. I always thought that having a light rail that runs from Commercial to Keizer and another one that runs down Lancaster would be great. Sorry, I am listening to you as I write this out). I would also like to ask you about buying a home. I finally have a good credit score, above 700. I am on section 8 and have recently found out that they have a first-time home buyers' program. I am a first-time home buyer. While I would LOVE to live in the downtown area, and my dream home would be one of those historic old homes, I have a feeling that those are going to be out of my price range. Do you feel like you might be able to help me find something? Thank you.

I hope downtown never becomes a living nightmare like Portland. I hate traffic, traffic has gotten so bad here the last 10 years and its only going to get worse 😩
Fun fact - Graveyard Carz is only an hour away in Springfield OR. Probably not high on your average condo dweller's wish list, but how many other reality TV shows are filmed in Oregon ?
@@SalemOR not really - you guys need a HGTV series to really put Salam on the map. Might sound hokey but the Gaines family made Waco TX famous for all the right reasons .
@@BillLaBrie hence my comment - the town is eager to move on. How many towns in Texas attract families to something that was built from scratch ? Forget the compound and the ATF fiasco.

I used to live at South Block for many years. I loved living downtown but rent kept going up so I bought a house in South Salem.

That makes sense. Unless you have a dedicated reason to be in Downtown, ya don't really stumble into it.
A lot of awesome information
Glad you liked it. Anything that was surprising to you?
Best breakfast places? 😁
I liked sweets/baked goods in the morning so I would say Manna Bakery.
