Wingin’ It! Paul Lucas there’s also the SQ288 that flies the SYD-CBR-SIN-SYD loop on a daily basis as well. This replaced the SQ ‘Capital Express’ service that did SIN-CBR-WLG-CBR-SIN with 5th freedom rights. But those 2 are the only international flights currently operating to CBR. With driving to Sydney only taking about 2.5 hours, there’s very little need to have to fly from Canberra. Considering transfer from domestic to international, check in, flight duration, and distance to the airport from northern parts of Canberra, you may as well just drive to Sydney to catch your flight.

Very impressive product by Qatar Airways. But given the situation we’re in, even a flight with Ryanair seems like something special :D.

I used to fly Qatar on company flights Saigon - London in the days of the bus terminal transfer. Then started using Business class and the transfer was by limo. Loved the new lounges as I used the showers first, then had a freshly cooked steak. Yes I agree steaks and lumps of beef never taste right on a plane.
Once retired I priced other airlines and Emirates came in a lot cheaper, also fly into Birmingham and off a limo service both ways. All flights by B777 and A380. I just love the A380 and will cry if their taken out of service and that's the reason I'm checking theA350.
Thanks for the excellent Vlog, take care.

I am a regular on lhr-doh-syd in J, last 3 Xmas trips, and the q suites are lovely - and I always ask for the lemon and mint drink when I get aboard 🙂. My only complaint is that getting a shower at DOH can be a pain , they should copy Etihad and give you a wireless buzzer to tell you when your shower is ready.

Awesome to hear that you came to Canberra, Paul. I hope you had time to visit our awesome city. If not, and you come back again one day, feel free to send me a message, I can organise a tour of our area.
Despite Canberra being a Government centre, we do have people here unrelated to Government, and quite a few tourist attractions. In my job as a taxi driver, I deal with a lot of tourists.
Correction though, we have two international flights, a Singapore Airlines flight that goes Sin-Syd-Cbr-Sin (SQ288) lands in Canberra around 9:30/10:30 at night depending on summer or winter time.
Sadly, due to COVID-19 both of our international flights have been suspended for a few months though.

Hey Paul, unless things had changed when you were here, Canberra actually has two international flights a day. Singapore Airlines has (had?) a late evening flight as well. Makes us sound like a hick town, doesn't it?
I'm not sure why the customs people would be bussed down here, as Qatar flies (flew) in daily and if Singapore still does (or did at the time), plus they are headquartered here.

Qatar airways is not the only international flight that operates out of CBR. Singapore airline operates CBR-SIN way before Qatar. SQ used to fly SIN-CBR-WLG back in 2016, then it became SIN-SYD-CBR-SIN with a unique flight number that doesn’t change for the entire round trip till the aircraft reaches back to SIN - SQ288

Glad you've finally gotten to visit my country, Paul! You are right, those bushfires do feel like a long time ago now, although I'm sure those whom were more affected would say otherwise and rightfully so. Seeing that footage of you coming into Sydney reminded me of when I returned home from Japan back to Sydney in late November. I assigned myself a seat on the left hand side so I could see my hometown from the air during the descent. Sadly this wasn't possible given the smoke cover. At first, I thought it was some sort of fog but with further thought, figured it was smoke. The smoke began to get worse a few days after I returned from memory. Still, the flight was a pleasure. Fourth time on All Nippon Airways and my second time in their Premium Economy on their Boeing 787-9, always a treat.
I got a giggle over the anecdote about the immigration officials in Canberra wondering why you decided to enter the country through there instead of Sydney. I don't think the concept of a cheaper fare would come to their mind all too often. I believe Singapore Airlines operates, or perhaps now, operated a flight between Singapore-Canberra-Wellington dubbed the "Capital Shuttle", or something like that too. I've never been to Canberra myself. We usually get the opportunity during school where I live, but I always opted out.
I did enjoy your take on the much hyped Q Suites. I hadn't read up much negative points about it besides those that have a habit of moving around their space too much during the flight allowing for some light bruising. Similar to you, I think that my chances of ever visiting Europe someday are close to zero, but maybe not so much in the near future.
Please take care. I'm looking forward to your uploads each week. They're always a treat to relax to after a day's work.

Great review Paul, thanks! Great memories for me too . Flew the Q Suite for the first time on a TP run to Singapore via Sofia and Doha to stay with my friend in Feb (seems like a lifetime ago now!!). It’s such a great product. I tried both the forward and rearward facing seats and did favour the rear facing one for the extra privacy.
Always love Qatar and their crews. On my way back to the UK from via Sofia I was the only one in business class one of their A321’s and was literally treated like a king! The crew couldn’t have done more for me.

Qatar airways is ahead of all competition. But I so much miss flying now that even a flight with Blue air out of BHX would be a privilege

Flew them ATL-DOH-SIN. The first flight on the 777-200LR was great, but they swapped the a350-900 for an old a330-300. Bummer, as the latter had recliner business class seats and it was a night flight.. The lounge is impressive, but cold and impersonal. Their buffet in the evening was mainly south asian food-not my favorite. However, the on-board catering and the cabin service were far superior to anything else I've experienced. I'd go out of my way to fly them again.

I flew the Q-Suites from Doha to Tokyo Haneda. I would disagree about the beds. At 6’1, I found them quite crazy and uncomfortable, particularly the angled footwell.
Also, I asked for an Old Fashioned and it was served to me without ice!
Apart from that, it was excellent.
Also, Who did frame Roger Rabbit?! ;£

I'm filled with envy!!! The Q Suite is simply amazing! Hey Paul, do you keep the amenity kit? Do you give them away? Would love to own 1 for my collection.

Australians ridicule Canberra, yet I believe that it is an unfairly maligned city. Actually, I think it is really lovely. Next time you come here, try Bendigo, which is a joy of gold rush Victorian buildings.
    Thank you for the video.

Just subscribed and love your videos. Do you do any videos once you are there (where ever that is) or just getting there and going back? This flight reminds me of the flt. I flew on United to Dubai, UAE and then on with a 1/4 full 747 to Doha, Qatar. They no longer fly to either :-(. With everything restricted do you have a lot of videos yet to publish? P.S. when this is all over I am considering the Indian Pacific train tour, looks fantastic.

Glad you finally made it down under Paul - hope you enjoyed your time here. Although those bush fires and smoke were by far the worst we've seen on record. Certainly not your typical classic Aussie Summer. Hopefully will never happen again. Interesting you chose to enter via Canberra. Qatar Q-Suites look impressive. Can't wait to see your Indian-Pacific report.

I fly that Doha to Sydney leg every 6 to 8 weeks, never gets easier!...but the Q-suite makes it bearable as its an outstanding product. First time I have seen a reaction to the signature drink like that, I normally have 2 straight away, very refreshing....spot on about Canberra too, boring dead city with nothing going on and an over-inflated view of itself, simply a large bush town and full of people who think the world revolves around their axis.

Here's a off question: When you got to Sydney and exited the plane do you have to take all your belongings off the plane then go back to the same seat after going through immigration and customs/and/or security? Oh another a quick question about luggage security locks on your baggage if you use them or not? Can you lock them or is it not allowed with TSA with checked or carry on luggage? 🤔

Lucas, I know what you mean about the teddy bear thing being terrifying - had a 4-hour stopover in this airport last May during a work trip at what would have been roughly 4am back home and my colleagues and I were so freaked out by it in our half-asleep state. Perhaps if we'd been more awake we would have been better able to appreciate it...? Or so I thought but it seems you had the same mixed feelings regarding it as well LOL!

Im glad that you got to visit my beautiful country but sad that you did so during the worst fires in our history. I was amused that you were asked "why Canberra?".......Most Aussies visit at least once many kids going as part of their education and I found it a beautiful and interesting city....but then I do prefer smaller cities.
