Doogal is essentially what would happen if one of cheesy early abridged dubs on TH-cam somehow getting a big budget theatrical release, and that’s funny to think.
I wanna say its kind of funny to me as a british person who watched the original magic roundabout as a kid (tv show and all) and find out why people ragged on the american version so much. beautiful documentry though, truly wonderful
Dude, you have made a phenomenal documentary about a French cartoon only the Europeans remembers. I know how important the Magic Roundabout is to European culture and I do get the feeling of nostalgia. Sadly Doogal by HW was my first introduction to the MR.

I should put Whatever Happened to Domo-kun and check video dates. i rewatch this one video on my family trip when I'm on the road.. still i really love this video.
The British dub of The Magic Roundabout movie is far better than the American dub Doogal and I haven't summed up the courage to watch Doogal yet, in fact I'm never going to bother watching it. The British dub has Bill Nighy, Ian McKellen and Tom Baker, these actors ae awesome and I love the Kylie Minogue song.
I grew up with the american dub and it's fucking awful, I feel horrible for ever enjoying it as a kid, as I watch this guy summarize the british version, the better it actually looks, i dare say the british one seems like an actually alright film
Yeah, I'm sending The 74 Minute Long Doogal-Mentary to all my friends. They can't possibly stop me, and this needs to be seen and appreciated. Also I cannot stop saying "I'm watching The 74 Minute Long Doogal-Mentary". I'm driving my parents mental. This is an insanely well produced, put-together video essay/docu. You enunciate well and speak at a digestable pace. I never found myself bored, even though I've never heard of this movie or any of its creators before. The history is fascinating and a great lesson in balancing premise, promise, and delivery. You are a good interviewer, and know how to pace discussions so as not to bombard your audience with too much information at once. EVERYTHING about this documentary is good. It's so good that I'm completely baffled that it has so few views and you have so few followers. This is Defunctland-level good. I don't think I can say that about too many of the dozens upon dozens of other VE'ers on this platform. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go binge all your videos (I'm particularly excited at the Hazbin Hotel one) and put both the original Magic Roundabout show and Tom Thumb movie on my viewing list. Great work! I appreciate you reaching out to the original creatives to get the British side of the story. The whole tale of it's creation as a french short turned british ad-lib was fascinating! Kinda funny how the 80's thru the 00's was the peak of the practice of import dubbing combined with remixing the content itself. I think the pinnacle of that practice was the show Macross being malformed into Robo-tech by Harmony Gold. I think the wiki's opening line says it best: "Robotech is an American 85-episode adaptation of three unrelated Japanese anime television series." Like, no way that shit would fly today. There are reasons I think this practice happened but I won't mention them here! Now-a-days with the internet it's much easier for shows to be imported, sub or dub track, as well as copywrite holders won't approve of someone taking their show and smashing it together with other properties. Other notable examples being 4Kids bizarro meddling and genuinely all of Power Rangers.
I forgot about MXC, Most Extreme Challenge. It was similar to Magical Roundabout where it was licensed footage re-dubbed to be funny. Was spike tv tho so your funny may very.
50:23 "Arthur And The Minimoys" is one of the movies that unfortunately got this treatment(the Weinstein Version of this movie is called "Arthur And The Invisibles")
Cannot also forget Richard William’s “The Thief and the Cobbler”, and that version he butchered was already a reworked version of the original intended film.
According to Jenny Nicholson, the original version of Arthur was also awful, and the Weinstein version at least got rid of the creepy adult/child relationship.
You know I find a damn shame because we f****** got the man the legend the motherfuking David Bowie to be f****** Force to do this this is kind of our fault guys had of not this happened David Bowie would still not be alive today but at least make better decisions before he died

Daniel… this was an AMAZING video! This movie was the whole reason I became obsessed with the original stop-motion series and your research into uncovering some of the making of the original British version is amazingly well done :D Since I discovered this movie, I’ve done some personal research on the original series, and based on some of my own findings, I was so surprised that the UK has messed up some of the “official” facts and history behind the show. The Magic Roundabout truly deserves to have its history properly rewritten!
The Butch section concerns me because I don’t know who’s more at fault for the movie being a flop. On the one hand, there’s Butch Hartman, a notorious liar. On the other hand, there’s Harvey Weinstein, a notorious monster. Everything Butch says sounds completely in-character for Weinstein, but it’s also in character for Butch to minimize his own roll in bad productions. I think he’s more responsible for the script than he’d like to admit, but I have no doubt in my mind that Weinstein was exactly as bad as he described. Like, who would lie about Harvey deliberately scheduling a meeting on the one day they’re not available? That’s too specific to have been fake, and it lines up with previous accounts of his weird power-play negotiations. Plus the rest of the actors sound like they hold more resentment towards Weinstein than the script, so I imagine that whatever happened in the recording process made the movie much worse.
I remember when this movie came out I was obsessed with it, I'm mexican so we got the LatAm spanish version of the American dub, I then got it bootlegged at a flea market, except that the movie was in Spanish from Spain, so I watched the UK version for the longest time and then got the original DVD and I was confused as to why tf everyone was talking so much and making so many references to stuff I didnt know. Even as a 7 year old I knew smth was up. Dylan was def my fave.
That was a great documentary! Magic Roundabout the Eric Thompson dubbed masterpiece is so underrated! Sometimes I feel like the only American to have heard of it I am glad someone else appreciates it!
Amazing video you did there about the history of The Magic Roundabout, Daniel! The 2005 animated film was the main reason why I become fascinated with the franchise.
Man I used to watch the American Doogal movie alllll the time when I was super duper young. It’s one of the only movies I’d ever want to watch; making my parents play it over and over again. Imagine how many more times I would have watched it if it was actually GOOD 😭

Amazing, well researched video, was not expecting to learn so much about the actual people that developed the movie rather than just the US dub shenanigans.
The 2005 movie wasn't the first time the franchise was brought to the United States, nor is Butch Hartman the only connection it has to Nickelodeon. I grew up with the butchered American version Doogal so hearing the characters speak in a different accent is very strange to me but interesting and far less painful than the american version.
I was a REALLY young kid seeing the butchered US release of Doogal and I wonder if it being so in your face and unsure pop culture references really turned me off to it as a kid, even with owning the DVD and a Mcdonalds toy from the movie. Watching this video is curing the knowledge that at least I wasn't fever dreaming this terrible cut but slightly wishing my parents got a copy of the UK release (as an American). I feel like I've only seen it fully twice not counting either falling asleep during it or turning it off mid movie to put on something else cause that Star Trek convention comment REALLY threw me off as I'm watching this video. Like who's kid is gonna understand that reference unless they grew up with Star Trek, which I didn't so it was lost to me along with the other pop culture references.
it's a shame such talented people like Butch often squander every bit of goodness and artistry they once had, I just couldn't live with myself if I sold out, no matter how much money I'd be making.
You also really can't blame them for using Stewart. He was at the top of his popularity at the time, arguably the biggest late night comic in the country. Same goes for Fallon, who was also a big name. And Goldberg had done voice acting before in The Lion King, among other things.
I avoided this movie as a kid because I didn't realize this was a dub and just wanted to see Hoodwinked 2. Then Hoodwinked 2 came out years later and in a terrible state...

Here's the thing about Butch: he's not trustworthy. In other words, I don't really believe him when he says they changed everything he did. He has a habit of blaming other people anytime something he's responsible for or has a hand in flops. And he's a notorious liar at this point. In other words, I 100% think they used his script.
Given that Harvey Weinstein had previously done pretty much the exact same thing to another animated movie (The Thief and the Cobbler) without Butch's involvement, I think Butch is telling the truth.
