      I'm glad to advise. But, buy a service manual. Some things you will be equipped to handle and some you won't.

    Slow but steady makes the grade, haste makes waste, The turtle wins the race, step by step. It's good some people still take pride in doing things correctly. I would not hesitate to pay this man top dollar to build a motor as I know it will not be junk.

    After watching your videos I feel confident that I can change my valve guide seals. I have the same motor. 98 evo in a road king.
    Man I love all your videos ,thanks to you the other mike and Bob that make these. I've got a old 98 road king and a 68 ironhead . All your videos come in so handy.

    I have a 1998 FLHT with 25,000 miles and Im installing ev 27 and wisco 10-1 and killer carb rebuild and thunderheader. This is my second build so I've watched and learned a lot from you. Thanks for the info at a good pace. The cam bearing tool was simple once I watched you a few times.

    Thanks for the videos that you I appreciate all that you're doing. I lost a couple buddies in a motorcycle wreck and I was paralyzed in the process as well. Watching you rebuild your motors brings me out of a rupt since I can't ride no more. My riding buddies were Terry and Rhonda Hatcher. Ride on Mike. 👍👍👍👍👍

    You know as I watch you put this evol motor together I must say they're definitely a different animal and a different breed because I've built pretty much all kinds of jap bikes and honestly I don't know nothing about Harleys but I'm willing to learn I've been watching your videos now for 3 days straight cuz I just picked up a Harley electria glide and 84 trying to find a manual feel like I said it's all new to me trying to rebuild this one

      Okay, next time I set Evo valves. But, the procedure is the same on any of the hydraulic lifter models with adjustable pushrods. Just have to follow the manufacturers recommendations on the amount to extend the pushrods. Don't forgrt to let them bleed down before rotating the engine.

    Thanks for the video Mike. Ive never really played with Evos too much but i think they are the best engine from HD as far as performance and reliability goes. Im a Shovel guy at heart though... ill never sell my Shovel haha

      I won't tell your dad. But, my favorite old roadbike is my 77 Shovelhead I bought new in 1978. But, little by little, I've collected the bikes of my dreams. I love each of them. Now, I need to build my Flathead 80 (UL).

      I've worked on mine (that's the one in the videos, thank you) a lot, but then, 400m miles requires quite a bit of maintenance. It's been my test bench for products since Shovelheads were the newest thing out, when I started working in shops. She gets whatever she wants.

    I could of used your advice in 2003 to 2017 Thanks Mike . I always used SE adjustable push rods they are the same size and I never do them till im done with the top end on my bike , if its staying stock with color pushrods I do it this way .

    Hey Mike. I love the informative videos you produce. Got to say, you'd be the go-to man for honest answers concerning EVO engines. Here is a question Ive been pondering. I think I know the answer, just looking for a confirmation. Can EFI be replaced with a carb?

      Thank you and yes. The fuel injection system used on Evos was difficult to diagnose and very few people ever learned them well. The newer injections were much easier to deal with and came out in 2002. To replace the injection system with carburetion is quite involved. Because the injection and the ignition systems are integrated into one system, it all has to be replaced along with the wiring system on the bike. So, you are now installing a carburetor and manifold, an entire ignition system and complete wiring harness. I've done it. It's worth it. It's quite an expense in time and materials, but takes some dedication.

      One per head. Same casting used for front and rear, only one hole used in each.

      No, Evos are much taller and require a taller frame. Sorry 'bout that. Nice compliment. Just an old bike mechanic.

    Mike, I pulled heads of and evo with adjustable pushrods and did not touch any of the adjustments on them.I then had the heads surfaced and complete valve job done. So my question is.will I have to readjust these pushrods since I did not mess with any of the adjustments to them

      Yes. Take it slow. You've changed the height of the heads. Be sure you do that assembly and reassembly according to the factory service manual. These things are very different than other engines. We do show how to adjust valves and assemble those heads onto the bike.

I just bought a 94 RK and will be doing some work to it. without going crazy would like to do a bolt in cam up grade was thinking woods W6.. And your thoughts on a BDL 2" belt drive, I live in Texas and hoping belt drive would help her run a little cooler. Stay safe Brother

      The primary would not have hot oil in it. I don't know that the engine would run any cooler. As far as your cam is concerned, you'll have to read what the cam is intended to do. At what RPM it's going to make its power is dependent upon what you want.

      Stagger rings as per specifications in service manual. There is a great diagram in the Evo service manuals. That is what I use.

      Are you sure it is stuck? If so, remove it and inspect for the cause.

    Hey Mike Thank You for the instructive video (Bob's-Evo part 11). I found it to be full of valuable information. I bought a used 96 FXST. It has an S&S carb on it. It no longer vents oil vapors into the carb air filter. It has a vent system like my old shovel. The FXST needed some gaskets replaced (rocker boxes). The shop that was helping me closed due to the owners health. The work had been started but not finished. I've got the bike and parts back home. My question is: Do I still need to install the umbrella gasket? I'm stuck no one seems to have a definitive answer. 1) it has a different carb set up and 2) it has a vent hose like the older bikes. What would your educated guess be?
    One more quick note the old shovel is running very nice with the Rn,RJ plugs. ThanK you for your videos and advice. Both are Priceless.

      Well, it sounds like you're using "early Evo" cases. They vent from the crankcase. It sounds like you're using "late Evo" cylinder heads. You can use both breathing systems. If you don't use the "top breathers," and you have them plugged off, you don't need the umbrella valves. If you choose to leave them open and vent to the air cleaner, or the atmosphere, with hoses, you'll need the umbrella valves.

    Is there a reason one of the rockers would be tighter than the other one? It doesnt seem bad, but I dont know. Something I noticed putting my motor together. Thank you for teaching me. I appreciate it tremendously.

      Thank you. I assume you are speaking of a shovelhead. They all need to be fitted individually. Check your service manual for specifications.

    What year motor is that? I’m building a 1990 FXRT evolution. Being a crankcase breather, do I use the umbrella valves?

      No, the crankcase breather Harley Evos didn't use umbrella valves and had no provision or use for them.

    I notice you didn't use lithium grease on the cylinder, head and rocker assembly gaskets is there a reason you don't use it on a evo motor?

    Great video!! Quick question, I'm rebuilding a 92 Evo which is a bottom breather motor, but came with top breather heads that were plugged with solid breather head bolts from the factory. Would you suggest throwing some umbrella valves in them and running both top and bottom breather?

      It sure works well with both systems. I don't know if the heads you're describing are exactly the same.

      @@pacificmike9501 from my understanding 1992/1993 is when Harley made the switch form bottom breather to top breather.. 92' was bottom breather but came with heads casted for top breathing, just no umbrella valves and solid bolts.. In 93' Harley eliminated bottom breather and went with top breather only.

      I think that depends on what state the bike was first sold in. It was all about emissions.

      You might want to try the steel cometic base gaskets. The big deal really is to start your motor up and let it get warm before hammering on the throttle.

    After 26 years on a knucklehead, due to spinal problems, i've recently change to a 1984 FXR, with a very early Evo. So now i have to learn this Engine inside out and you'r video is a great Way to start. So here's ny question: what function do the umbrella Valve have. Is it presurre release or just a one way Valve ?

      They're just a one way valve on the breathing system. They came in 19992, when the Evo motor became a top breather to exxhale into the carburetor directly from the heads. Something to do with emissions. Prior to that, Evos had case breathers down below like any Harley before that point in time. When I do a big Evo motor with lots of inches, using S&S cases, I employ top breathers and bottom breathers into the atmosphere. This is, of course, "For Offroad Use Only."

      Ok thanks, then i dont have mind about it on a -84 Evo. I'm used to the timing case breather. My Evo is so early that is still have the three bolt clutch tree and a secondary chain. Greetings from Denmark.

    I want to do mine again it was so much fun for not being a mechanic and my first time doing it almost a year later no leaks and running strong . I was surprised on how basic it was and made me feel great ! If course mine was stock so the push rods where color coated so it made it easier. Love watching you Mike!!

    Well then, maybe your neighbor has an engine they now need rebuilt lol. i think it's great you pay it forward with Evo's, Knuckles, Pans etc, it's your comfort zone but you're an intelligent man and I think you should try to challenge yourself, venture out into the twin cam era, early years with a carb and timken bottom. Most of the HD's on the road today are TC's and all those people also need a Pacific Mike. Plus, I'm sure another 30K subs couldn't hurt.

      It's not just a " comfort zone." I love the way the old motors run. I love the way the old motors sound, feel, smell. and look. The "modern" motors are fine. In fact, I made a living out of them for a long time. But, the dealerships don't work on the old motors and I still love them. I built the Evo motor for a friend and showed it on TH-cam for the people interested. I know there's a lot of them, but my preference is really the older motors.

    Hello MIke, enjoy the videos don't know how many times I repeatedly watch this one:) Is there another rubber seal that goes up into the rocker box hole where the upper lifter tube fits in, other than the one that's on the lifter tube?

      No. Just don't over tighten and damage the holes. The top ones, between the boxes can crack at the holes. By the way, if the pushrod tube is leaking, I don't know what year Shovelhead you have. Be sure and use the right seal. Sometimes you need to get a little creative with those tubes.

      @@pacificmike9501 I'm sorry, it is an 85 Evolution engine. It seems to fit better without that rubber seal on my finger when I just use the rubber seal on the upper tube for the push rod. I bought a tube/seal kit I think for different models. So I wasn't sure which one was the correct one to use.

      Top pushrod seal on an Evo is a fat O-Ring.

    I like the Evo motors. I had one back in the 90s. What is your opinion of the twin cam engine? I have heard that they have more possibilities of trouble compared to Evo or M8 because their flywheel is pressed on and the tensioners are plastic.

      Pretty much it. The twin cam requires serious money spent on it.

    Mike, how much should I be able to slide the rockers from left to right when they are installed in the rocker box ? I have at the least, 1 rocker that im able to slide it lefy to right more than the other rockers. That causes me to wonder if the lower part of the rocker box ( rocker box inner ) is worn. Or maybe the end of the rocker is worn. Leaving to much clearance, allowing the rocker to slip on the shaft from side to side and knock against the rocker box, at the end of the shaft.
    I cant seem to find a specification for this.

      Assuming you're working on an Evolution Engine, it's certainly covered in the service manual in section 3, under specifications (go to "rocker arm." Service Wear Limits, go to "rocker arm."

      @@pacificmike9501 I did find that specification, Mike. Max clearance, .025 . Mine is within spec. I had also noticed the shaft itself slides left to right, more than all the others. Rough estimate it moves about 3/16 from left to right. That I cant find a spec for. Lol. I have s&s shafts and forged rockers on the way. Im just going to leave it alone for now. Ive decided to jist collect parts ( and tools )until I have everything to pull the entire engine down after the weather gives out in late fall.

    Hi Mike Pacific Bob here, 1st i gotta say a huge thanks for putting out such great informative videos. I have a completley original 85 FXR with 43miles on it. She has very quiet running motor although Im giving her a bit of a pep up. EV27cam and new cam bearing, Keith black 9:5-1comp piston kit and new tappets.
    Im new to harleys, whats a reasonably priced quality or brand tappet set (or Just go OEM)? The cam says its a drop in install can i just re use my original pushrods? do i need to use any certain type or material rocker box gaskets on the 85 model evo (Cork for example)? With the bump up in compression you think my old starter set up will have trouble? should i look into compression release or higher output starter motor? Doesnt look like much room to install the compression releases on my head.

      I don't mean to burst your bubble, but, first off, the original lifters are good for, probably 80 thousand miles, but a good "aftermarket set would probably be better. I suggest a good set of steel adjustable pushrods. The cam you've selected is fine. I don't recommend specific brands. If you're raising your compression, be sure you "clay" the top of them for clearance with your valves opening. That "drop-in" cam is a drop in with a stock motor. Now, you're changing it. A mild cam, a good carburetor, a nice set of free flowing exhaust pipes, a good ignition system, and you'll be amazed how much it will wake up. That 85 cam isn't really that bad either. Here in California, Harleys didn't get bad cams until 1988.

    Is there a definitive way to cure the pushrod rubbing the upper tube at the top? .543 lift, stock ratio rockers, S&S quickee adj. pushrods, .030 head gasket. So shorter stack + higher lift = pushrod rubbing. I’ve seen people bore the upper pushrod tube where it meets the head a bit to gain clearance, but before I get after it I’m seeking as much advice as possible.

      There are thinner chrome moly pushrods that I've used in the past. I assume you're doing an Evo. Crane made those pushrods and they might be available from S&S now.

    Mike I notice your push rod's are adjustable mine aren't my rear lifter block was leaking change that changed push o Rings can't get rockers back in do I have to pull Head this is not like my knuck or pan Help

      The original pushrods in an Evo are non adjustable. The ones in this motor have been changed to aftermarket adjustables. They usually get changed when you change the cam. Now that you are where you are, rotate the engine by hand untill both lifters for the cylinder you're working on are bottomed. The rocker box with its rocker arms should be removed. Pushrods and tubes installed. Rocker boxes can now be replaced with their rocker arms. In removing rocker boxes on Evos, loosen the bolts a little at a time to keep stresses spread out and even. Same thing when reinstalling them. Replace all gaskets. You don't have to pull the head, just the rocker boxes. If you pull the cam, you can do all this stuff from the bottom. You're right, ain't easy.

    Hey mike long time no watch ive been in the slammer,anyways i thing u are the most best harley mechanic alive, inhave a serious problem my brother died and his father is like 83 years old to ride so he gave me his 1995 fxsts softail springer , its been sitting in a garage since 1995 he put a s&s hyper charger on it,small oil cooler , the works money to him was not and option, im not anyways i drove it home ran great. , now the problems are this i have the click of death , so i installed that cylonoid it fire right up 1 time, but flames were shoting out the ehaust then i died again,1more thing its constantly leakkng gas out of the over flow tupe?is there a way to fix that float leak without takin off all that hard where like hyper charger carb etc, its not tuned. Right either but first i beliieve i have to stop the gas leakin from the over flow, mike man my lady died as well im not in gd shape the only thearaly is takin a long ride can u please givensum advice to put this to rest for ever s.o.s num1 fan

      The carburetor should be removed and boiled out. The overflow tube is leaking gas because the float and needle need cleaning, probably the whole fuel system needs cleaning. Fresh fluids. Fresh gasoline. Add a fuel filter.

      They are 1/4 x 20 allen head cap screws. Your parts manual or any dealership has the part number. Harley uses a bunch of subcontractors to manufacture parts.

      The intakes and exhaust are different length from each other. They used to color code them. But that was back in the beginning. If installing a different cam than the original, you need to replace them with adjustables anyway. If reassembling a stock motor, put them back where they came from. The exhausts are longer than the intakes.

    @18:50 you got confuse ??? on that umbrella valve??? you need a break and have a red bull...you can install the umbrella valve on the wrong side of that head, and my god that engine will smoke like you never seen a engine smoke Haha... this happen in a school for harley Haha... pulled head cover off and guess what the umbrella valve was on the wrong side Haha.... Shane Conley harley master tech on you tube talks about a student that install that rubber valve on the wrong side...

      You are so right. Yah, I get a case of the "tireds." And I really prefer my old stuff. I've stayed away from late model bikes for a long time. I just help someone out occasionally. Flatheads through Shovels is where I get my Harley joy. I worked on later stuff until I retired, about ten years ago. I built some very fast twin cams and very fast Evos for people. They loved 'em. And, I made money. I'm going for a thrill ride in the mountains, on my Knucklehead today.
