In one of the Twitter Takeovers, this is stated: Sonic: You blew up the moon! Eggman: O-only half of it! And look, you can’t even see the missing half anymore! Shadow: There are reasons for that. Maybe some day we’ll get to tell those stories… I’m not sure if that’s a throwaway line, or a hint to something more, but it’s interesting nonetheless.
It was confirmed over a decade ago that the moon just rotated and post-SA2 we're just seeing the other side of the moon. Obviously that's not how the moon works in real life, but Sonic isn't real life, it's Sonic.
The sad thing is that Shadow standing in front of a broken moon in the opening cutscene would make for a neat visualisation of... something about Shadow's mind state, idk, I remember this idea from some video but I forgot the details. But you get the general idea, right?
I've always liked that idea. The image of Shadow looking up at a half destroyed moon, almost like it's a constant reminder of the mistakes and bad choices that he made seems like such a cool visual
Wouldn't the moon turn around if hit by a big laser like in SA2? I know that the same side of the moon faces the Earth due to its rotation as it moves, but wouldn't that rotation be offset even in the slightest by being hit by a massive space laser that hits a little off from the center of the moon? If you hit a sphere even slightly off from the center, it will spin. Hope this made sense.
The moons spins on its axis causing diffrent sides of the moon to be visable every so often, hence the moon is still destroyed and we just see the unharmed side
I really hope they fix this because I just want to see the broken moon in the backgrounds, cuz in a cinematic/visual perspective I think it would look pretty cool kinda like RWBY.
generations is tricky. the moon appears but not in any post sa2 stage however the moon does appear in the shadow battle which is their fight on the ark after the moon was destroyed fully in tact, this is probably the worst example because it litterally takes place hours after its destruction

Super Sonic fixed the moon after SA2 because otherwise the consequences would be apocalyptic. He cannonically transported all of the metal virus to the sun and creates light constructs. He probably just picked the pieces back up with a big chaos control and put them back together. That's my headcanon at least
it would be such a cool plot point if there was a water filled apocalypse because of the broken moon meanwhile eggman is rebuilding the moon as his secret base (chaos could also be involved because water)
Honestly I just head cannon the magic castle in heroes fixed the moon because 13 people (counting Metal Sonic) are running around in it. As for advance my explanation is I head cannon it before sa2.
So, the reason we only see one side of our moon is because earth’s gravity is pulling on the side closest to us stronger than the other side. The moon is close enough for that to be a drastic difference in forces, so one side is always facing the earth. It’s a phenomenon known as tidal locking. (Fun fact: Mercury is tidally locked to the sun) So, when Eggman blew up part of the moon, he drastically changed the mass of that side. Sonic’s world would then pull strongest on the side of the moon with the most mass, which is now the side opposite the giant crater. Izuka’s explanation seems goofy, and we should have at least seen part of the missing chunk in Sonic Colors, but on paper? It’s a reasonable explanation
How about we just cover it in an IDW annual? “The extremely brief side quest betwixt Shadow and SA2 in which Sonic runs so fast around the moon that it turns around and Tails goes on an extremely long diatribe about how the energy from the chaos emeralds prevents the tidal system from being reliant on the Moon’s mass and rotation”
There is no such thing as Mobius. I love Archie, but it was never a game thing. SA1-Unleashed clearly take place on Earth, and it was never said or implied in game that there are 2 worlds. It was even confirmed that there is just Earth. Also, the ancients in Frontiers come to Earth.
Then where was animal citizens beyond typical cast of Sonic characters in Sonic Unleashed? Where was human citizens and G.U.N. in Sonic Forces? And you can't say that Sonic characters (except Knuckles maybe) were created artificially like Shadow because there's no solid proofs of that in the games. SEGA just loves retconning things multiple times I guess.
@@АлексейТабаков-ы8в Forces just takes place in places without humans. Also, if people actually read Archie they would know that Mobius is Earth. "Overlanders" as they are called exist with animals.
Shadow 05's moon moment could be explained away by the intro cutscene not being canonical, or at least that specific shot. But that becomes irrelevant once Sonic 06 rolls around.
My theory is that Sega simply doesn't care about continuity and consistency in Sonic games because they believe that the story in a Sonic game simply doesn't matter. In Sonic Adventure 2, thats not actually sonics world moon what was blown up. So on green hills, the moon would be normal. Same with Sonic Frontiers. Thats set on a different planet what means different moons 💀
This video made me realize that the moon is a pretty big part in the series. From being in the second game release EVER, all the way to now, it's always stuck around.
Ya know at least, the VERY LEAST the moon is still considered fractured. Despite the silly official answer & it probably won't be rectified in the games. That's like the only sliver lining here & it wasn't completely Ignored Great video BTW
I’m pretty sure Shadow the Hedgehog’s reason for having the moon is because Blur Studios only made the CGI cutscenes, they didn’t know anything about the lore.
Let’s be real here. If the moon was blown in half, then it would have a permanent effect on the Earth’s tides and the moon’s phases and gravitational pull. So I guess in order to avoid all of that, SEGA and Sonic Team essentially went back to the moon looking whole while just saying that the broken half was the dark side of the moon. Even though you could clearly see it being blown up from Earth in SA2 and that the issues I listed with the moon would still exist. Lore consistency, am I right? Maybe someday, we’ll get a proper explanation. Imagine if Sonic Team did a remake of SA2 and completely retcon the moon being blown up by having Dr. Eggman fire on some random asteroid in the asteroid belt instead.
My personal solution for this lies in the Wii version of Unleashed. You see, in one of the Chun-Nan stages, you can see a moon that is clearly just pasted onto the skybox without regard for the lighting in the original photo, resulting in a very clear square. Most people would say this was Dimps being lazy, but I say it's a clue. For what, you may ask? Well it's simple. THE MOON IS A HOLOGRAM Well, it WAS a hologram. Specifically, it was a hologram until some point just before Colors, when it was properly repaired. So basically, the moon thing is no longer an issue because they fixed the moon, and used a hologram before it got repaired.
i think the impact of the eclipse cannon made the moon turn the part that isn’t blown up. but the real answer is that no one in sonic team really cares about continuity, does anyone forget the thing with blaze in 06 and the thing with eggman nega in the rivals game?
Another confusing plot point is which Sonic Adventure 1 character ending is canon? Sonic or Tails ending? Did stoping the missile from hitting the city happened first before Chaos became a water monster and destroyed the city or did that not happen in Tail’s canon story? Pretty confusing. People of Pluto!?
I mean, if it's mass distribution changed, I don't see why the more massive side wouldn't be pulled to face towards the center of gravity of the earth-moon system. Kind of irrelevant though, since there's canonically more than one moon anyway, as we have seen on a couple of occasions two moons in the sky. So in any Sonic game that only shows one moon, there's no real way to tell which one it is.
Honestly, an easier explanation would be using 06 or any other Sonic plot involving time travel. Just say when they messed with the timeline, the moon wasn't destroyed and Shadow didn't die. Easy fix for 2 massive inconsistencies. I know Eggman said Shadow was the original in a background comment but that's hardly satisfying. Or they could've said Dark Gaia repaired the moon with its power, explaining why people went evil at night.
