    Now this is hard rock that I can vibe with....similar to how I love Foreigner's rock...great song, amazing talent... Thanks for watching!! 🥰

      Yes, this is classic hard rock. Not (IMO) mindless metal. If you want to sample some trail-blazing British classic hard rock please react to Deep Purple. Highway Star (1972) for example. 😉

      OK. so far I only have Smoke on the Water and Child in Time for them....

      @@retroreactions.... You can add my votes for both of them! Like all the premier bands, every member is outstanding. IMO, Ian Gillan has the best ever rock voice. Ian Paice is my favourite classic hard rock drummer. Ritchie Blackmore on lead guitar and Jon Lord on organ are virtuosos and Roger Glover is a great bass player. You will not be disappointed man!

      @@retroreactions.... Thanks. I only suggest things that are (1) quality and (2) that fit with what you have said you like. I would like to mention again the prog rock concept album masterpiece: Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of the War of the Worlds (1978). It is heavy on strings/orchestra and synths. Along with great guitar work and vocals. Just superb!

    When you look up " perfect hard rock album ", Boston's debut is the first entry. And Foreplay/Long Time is the bedrock of the album, hard rock with just a touch of prog, showing creativity. The excellent musicianship, production/engineering, AND Brad Delp singing?!
    Masterpiece is massive understatement.
    RIP Brad Delp

    Tom Scholz is a MIT engineer too and created custom electronics devices to get the swooshing effects on guitars.

    • @retroreactions....
      @retroreactions....  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow very surprising! That would explain the sound I heard...🙂

  • @daytonarama
    @daytonarama ปีที่แล้ว +2

    That's Tom Scholz on keyboards, guitar, guitar, guitar, guitar (many layers of guitar on every Boston song, overdubbed) and bass. His custom made space warp pedal (which he built, the only one in there is) does all the wooshing noises as well as endless sustains and even loops. He also built the devices (later a commercial product called Rockman) to generate the unique Boston guitar sound. And of course, famously put together this entire album in his basement. Nobody can match this guy's talent, creativity or this album, an absolute masterpiece of rock music.

    • @retroreactions....

      What a legend Tom is....thanks for watching!

    • @neechee5150
      @neechee5150 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @daytonarama Where does all of this Boston/Scholz urban legend BS come from? This entire record was not recorded in Toms basement studio. It is a well documented fact that Brad wrote Let Me Take You Home and that Let Me Take You Home was recorded by producer John Boylan at The Record Plant LA. It is a well documented fact that the band as pictured on the back of the record plays all of the tracks on Let Me Take You Home. It is also a well documented fact that all of Brads vocals for this record were recorded by producer John Boylan at Capital Studio's Studio C. It is also a well documented fact this record was mixed at Westlake Studios in LA by Boylan, Dewey and Tom.
      There is no Rockman or Rockman prototype or Rock Modules on this record which is THE trademark Boston guitar sound. The guitar sound that you are hearing came out of Marshall tube amps. The eq curve for the guitar sound is set by graphic eq's. The overdrive is due to the power tubes clipping and saturating naturally.
      The hyper space pedal is based upon a modified Echoplex tape eco/delay. A Digitech Whammy Pedal and a good digital processor will do anything that the hyperspace pedal can do. This pedal is not solving the seeming contradictions in quantum mechanics--it is a modified Echo plex

  • @tracygosell9199
    @tracygosell9199 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Boston's big thing was no synthesizers. Every sound made was created by human experience. All the sound you are trying to identify were made by Tom Shultz on his guitars. Every clap and is a real clap. Music the way it is supposed to be made!!!

  • @cletusbeauregard1972
    @cletusbeauregard1972 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    That "whoosh" sound is an effects pedal that bandleader Tom Scholz designed and built; he calls it the Hyperspace pedal. As far as I know, he never marketed it.

    Boston and Foreigner hit the record stores at the same time. I only had enough money to buy one of their debut albums and I flipped a coin and came down Foreigner. It's a great album but in retrospect I wish the coin had come down the other way. / This two-song suite is just so fabulous. "Foreplay" has a lot of attributes of the classical form called a "toccata." Scholz was a freaking genius.

    It was great to see you enjoy this Brandon. You cannot go wrong with this awesome debut album. There is a great link between More Than a Feeling and this, namely, the interplay of acoustic and electric guitars. They work so well together in both songs. Yep, Tom Scholz's guitar tone is absolutely fantastic. 🎸

    so one dude recorded and mixed it and played all the instruments in his basement studio, got Brad to sing it...one of few bands that came AFTER the first album was recorded.

      @retroreactions....  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's amazing! Thanks Steve

    • @neechee5150
      @neechee5150 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @steveboyes2090 It is a well documented fact that this record was mixed at Westlake Studios in CA, and that producer John Boylan, engineer Warren Dewey and Tom mixed the record. Tom also did not play all of the instrument tracks either. It is a well documented fact that Sib plays all drum tracks on this record except one, and Jim Masdea played drums on that song. Barry plays the vast majority of the electric guitar parts on these two songs. Fran is playing bass on Foreplay.
      Brad was signed to the same record deal that Tom was. When Epic signed "Boston" they made it very clear that Brads voice which was on the demo tape that they heard was a BIG part of the Boston sound that they bought when they signed the deal.

    Among the other things that you mentioned, I think the dynamics are great. Foreplay draws you in, especially the soft part at the end. You crank up the volume to hear the sounds like your in outer space, and then they hit you with the soaring guitar right from the start of "LongTime". During "Long Time" you get the change to the acoustic and claps before the next part; and then the third time it is no longer acoustic when you get the isolated electric guitar doing that part. Also, the key change as more guitars kick in is awesome.
    The whole album is great, but for a change-up from the hard rock check out "Hitch A RIde"; and then back to "Peace Of Mind' for another deep-meaning rockin' song.
