Boston's Debut Album is considered THE BEST!! Not a bad Song on it!❤
Boston is a great American rock band who had their biggest success in the 70's-80's. They had a lot of great songs such as "Peace Of Mind", "Rock & Roll Band", "Don't Look Back", "A Man I'll Never Be", "Feelin' Satisfied", Smokin'", "We're Ready", "Amanda", "Hitch A Ride", "Hollyann", "Cool The Engines" etc.
This song is a masterpiece.....a Polaroid engineer recorded this album in his basement with a drummer and a vocalist (Brad Delp - RIP who is fantastic). The engineer, Tom Scholz, does all the guitars, bass and the organ - then produced it and mixed it.
@wpollock1 there is so much Boston debut record urban legend out there that is total BS. All of Brads vocals were recorded by producer John Boylan at Capital Studios Studio C in the spring of 1976. Tom does not play all of the guitar and bass tracks on this record either. Tom auditioned to be in Barry's band back in 1969/1970 and Barry played these songs and on demos with Tom and Brad years before this record was made Barry plays electric rhythm on Foreplay, Long Time and Let Me Take You Home. Barry plays lead guitar on Long Time and lead and slide guitar on Let Me Take You Home. Fran plays bass on Foreplay and on Let Me Take You Home, and Brad plays electric 12 string guitar on Let Me Take You Home which Brad wrote. Brad also co-wrote Smokin'.
Tom has never admitted this on the record, but before this record could be finished, producer John Boylan had to hire LA engineer Paul Grupp to go to Toms studio to teach him how to record acoustic instruments and drums correctly as well as proper mic technique. Boylan did much more production and pre-production work that Tom has let on to.
This record was mixed at Westlake Studios on their then new and top of the line API console and producer John Boylan, engineer Warren Dewey and Tom mixed this record.
If you want to research this on your own, I recommend you read the legal documents from the law suits between Tom and Barry. Read the interview that Boylan did in Mix Magazine and read the post litigation version of the liner notes in the 2006 Scholz remaster of the debut Boston record. In these liner notes Tom finally came clean and gave Brad and Jim Masdea credit and some long long long overdue gratitude for all of the arrangement work that they did on these songs throughout the years that they worked with Tom.
When I first discovered this album back in the late 70s I went and bought the 8 track...yea I said it ... and it has been in my collection in some form ever sense ....amazing album and a top notch band !!
Tom Scholz is the founder, main songwriter, primary guitarist, keyboardist, and only remaining original member of the band. Quite literally a brilliant guy. He is an MIT-trained engineer.

Widely considered to be one of the greatest debut albums in rock history. I bet you would really enjoy just starting at the first song and going through the album and it has a pretty good flow. But then again I was originally hearing it on 8-trac, lol.
trying to explain 8-tracks to anyone is almost pointless, had to be there, such a dumb idea and they sounded like dog doo tacos, only made worse by songs stopping then starting again, halfway through a track...so dumb
This song brings back great memories of dancing to this at the disco in the 70s. A sea of people high clapping at the appropriate times. A wonderful time to be a teen.

Great reaction! Boston is pure fire, and as a Gen Xer, I listened to them, and many great rock bands, through the 70s and 80s, when they were at their height.
The organ you're hearing is the Hammond B3, which was used from the 50s through the beginning of the 80s by most rock (and rock n' roll) bands, including Boston, Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, Kansas, etc...to great effect. By the 80s, it was replaced by synthesizers, from such manufacturers as Moog, Yamaha, etc.
The "changes" you are referring to are generally called "transitions", either switch ups ir even key changes (this amazing song has both). And Boston's debut album, as many will tell you, doesn't have a vad song on it...nor does their second or third album. Here is a video of Boston founder Tom Scholz, who recorded the whole of the first album almost exclusively by himself, in his basement with his own equipment (Brad Delp, the band's lead vocalist, did all the vocal parts after the musical tracks were recorded, and original drummer Jim Masdea, who left the band very shortly after the recordings). A full band was put together after those initial recordings. Here, Scholz describes the Hammond B3.

When I saw. these guys in concert, they had a whole pipe. Oregan set up on stage, it was incredible. I can't imagine., how long it took to set that up?
He can't believe what he's listening to sorry I heard them in 1976 I was 23 and seen them live on their first tour in Philadelphia at the Spectrum 21,000 sold out concert

@jimspears5423 The Rockman nor any of its prototypes did not exist at the time that this record was recorded . In terms of electric guitar what you are hearing are Marshall tube amps being driven so hard that the power tubes are naturally clipping and compressing. Tom was able to do this without blowing out his ears as well as the ears of his neighbors by using a large variable resistor from a theater lighting system to soak up the wattage coming from the Marshall amp head before it hit the speakers as well as before it hit the DI arrangement he was using to run the Marshall signal direct into the console. You are also hearing the doubler that Tom made using bucket brigade technology.

What specific device are you referring to?
Tom did not invent or build the Sculley 12 track tape machine he used. Tom did not invent or built the Dan Flickinger mixer/console that he used either and both of those pieces of gear could be relatively easliy purchased at the time this record was made. Tom also did not make or invent the large variable theater lighting system resistor that he used as a power soak either.

The so called hyperspace pedal was based upon an echoplex which was a crude tape loop echo. A DigiTech whammy pedal and an Fractal Audio guitar processor unit will do just about everything Toms so called "hyperspace pedal and be more clean and consistent/precise in the process. EVH was also using an echoplex for effects as was Richie Blackmore among others.
The hyperspace pedal is not the equivalent of solving the seeming contradictions in quantum mechanics or splitting atoms. Other guitar players were using modified echoplex machines for effects years before this record came out.
The hyperspace pedal is just that a pedal which is a very portable device and said device could easily be transported to any major recording studio or home studio in the world. Thus the hyperspace pedal was NOT the reason why Tom said that he could not get the sound he wanted in another studio.
I first saw Pink Floyd when I was 13 in 73. Couple years later I remember getting this album and saw Boston a couple times around 75/76. Floyd 4 total, so I kinda get it. Most 70s bands had pretty long intros but Floyd took it to another level.
I don't think there was a single person in school who didn't have this album when it came out. If you didn't have it, your older brother certainly did. Fire. Still.

"I look like a Walrus"...LOL . Consider "Feelin' Satisfied", "Something About You", "Peace of Mind" by them, and others that people mentioned.
