Yeah! Great musicians, Jhon Wetton from King Crimson, Steve Howe and Geaff Downs from Yes and Buggles, Carl Palmer from ELP. Great Line up.

Asia's chorus are two John's with a Geoff on the higher range and Steve Howe on the lower range.
There is a version of Trevor Rabin singing Only Time Will Tell when he auditioned for the band. They decided to be a four piece with one guitarist. The irony is Geoff Downes former Buggles bandmate was producing the former Yes group and had Trevor Rabin in the band. When they realized Rabin couldn't front the vocals that is when they coaxed Jon Anderson back and Yes, 90125 is born.
The demo or Rabin singing with Asia is on TH-cam.

That deep bass note is from the Moog Taurus bass pedals. John Wetton the singer and bass player of Asia at the time played it. Genesis is another band that used the Taurus bass pedals

Few groups can boast such clean instrumentals. My favorite song by Asia is “Midnight Sun.” It always makes me feel like I’m flying.
Next to Yes, Asia always had the coolest cover art.

I LOVE this band! Steve was very clear what he wanted with Yes in the late '70s. He wanted shorter songs so they could mix it up better in concert. The epics were taking up too much of the evening. And John Wetton had been through the King Crimson thing with avant garde instrumentals; he wanted to step back and ask "Why did I become a musician in the first place? The Beach Boys!" So he wanted to do something A LOT closer to pop with some catchy songs with layered-up choruses. Not many people understand that Asia was a prog-rock Beach Boys.

Their debut was much anticipated. I saw them play Auditorium Theatre in Chicago was the eight date on their first tour. A month or so later saw them again outdoors at Poplar Creek outside Chicago. Bought the first two LPs. Enjoyed them a good bit back then but honestly not something I actively search out to listen to in a very long time.

You’ll have many more to explore after again opening up another rabbit hole. I saw them for their first tour in 1983, as someone else commented, at Poplar Creek near Chicago. It was a great venue and was only about 25-30 minutes from home! I saw MANY shows there! Steve Howe is always amazing, and here with Asia is his Yes band mate Geoff Downes on keyboards. John Wetton (RIP) is amazing as well, and before Asia was with King Crimson, UK, Uriah Heep and Wishbone Ash. Who else to finish up such a lineup other than Carl Palmer on drums. Back in 1983, at Palmers’ suggestion, Asia recruited Greg Lake to perform 4 shows in Japan, replacing John Wetton briefly. It was their “Asia in Asia” live recording. They’ve undergone several lineups over the years, but I’m definitely partial to the original lineup.

Looking back I’ve seen Asia, The Beach Boys, Genesis, Joe Walsh, Yes, Kansas, Kenny Loggins, Neil Diamond, Peter Gabriel, Ringo Starr, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Roger Daltrey, Tom Petty, Molly Hatchett, Anderson Bruford Wakeman and Howe, B.B.King, ZZ Top, Chicago. Yes, the voice is so powerful and clean. And it starts right out with a melodic hook --- don't hide it in the chorus, here, have a hook sandwich as soon as you walk in the door! Any other band would use that for the chorus and have wimpy verses. The melody of the whole song is superlative. The lyrics are no slouch either. The internal rhyme of "sun will cross the SKY / this LIE is over" catches the ear. The idea of "tears that used to tide me over" gives a bit of intrigue -- how do tears tide one over? Tide over until what? The voices quietly singing "only time will tell" in the chorus (maybe the prechorus?) seem to me very Alan Parsons-y. This is the Asia song I remember best, and like best.

Steve Howe and Geoff Downes (YES) + Carl Palmer (ELP) + John Wetton (KING CRIMSON) --> How could such a combination have made a bad product? However, the group's last album "Gravitas" (2014) hinted at a drop in the quality of composition... and the departure of Steve Howe (in 2013) was undoubtedly the explanation. Thanks.

Asia was a supergroup, but with prog musicians. The great John Wetton(RIP) on bass and vocals perhaps the best member(some might take issue with this assessment). Their first two albums are masterpieces, then a bit of a fall off, but still very good work. Sadly, numerous lineup changes occurred, taking their momentum away. Good morning, Brandon. The fantastic voice belongs to the late, great John Wetton. Wetton was a member of King Crimson from 1972-‘74. He was mostly responsible for writing possibly the greatest Prog song of all time called “Starless”. Epic song. Later, he was a member of “UK”, which is another Prog band. Wetton is missed.😢
BTW, the lyrics of “Only Time Will Tell” were written about Wetton’s then girlfriend who was cheating on him and using him. This song brings back great memories of the fifth grade. Yes, I’m ancient, lol.
