Light and the electromagnetic spectrum is probably my favorite. You guys discussed the planck length but not really the impact it has on the forces and energy it applies to the universe. One of my personal(likely incorrect) ideas was that rather than geometry and curvature being responsible for gravity, it may actually be electromagnetic interactions and the latent energies within atoms and even down to leptons, quarks, etc. Since it's strong and weak nuclear forces(effectively electromagnetism) that holds things together at that level, why wouldn't that influence impact the greater universe even supposing the inverse square law significantly reduces the effect over distance. If the entire universe is saturated with these forces, it would make sense that small imbalances would causes attraction and even repulsion forces. Maybe you can do a video on something of that nature?

What about Donald Hoffman saying our perception of reality is not a direct representation of the objective world, but rather a simplified interface that has evolved to help us survive? And he thinks consciousness is not an emergent property of physical particles (like brains), but rather a fundamental aspect of reality itself.

That's cool and all, and I in general agree with you on that, but it doesn't change the fact that science has hit a major brick wall- there is no proven answer as to why we exist which is the most important question above all else.

@@tf4665 While I would say yes, science has never been able to figure out that answer, doesn't necessarily mean they've hit a brick wall. There's still tons of amazing things that science finds out all the time about our universe, our planet, and ourselves. "Why do we exist" will probably be the greatest question of all time, but if we just sit here and only ever wonder that, then we would never get anywhere. Be greatful that we do, and if we ever find out, then be greatful for that, but never stop questioning the rest of everything. We are a speck of a piece of a piece of sand in this universe. Stay looking up!!!

@@--ART3MIS--It is extremely simple to understand these are one-dimensional string membranes that are destroyed by The Singularity of a black hole and once this happens they are in a state in between 0 and 1 dimensional this creates Dark Matter coming out of black holes and what is considered non baryonic matter. This is the counterforce to the expansion of the universe. We don't we do not live in a 3 + 1 System One of the most important things that I recently came to conclude is that I have came up with a system to prove that we live in an infinite Multiverse. I will state it here and now. So if we follow the logical progression of the spatial Dimensions infinite zero-dimensional existence can stack into any size one dimensional existence and infinite one-dimensional existence can stack into any size two-dimensional existence and infinite two-dimensional existence can stack into any size three-dimensional existence so if we follow this logical progression we can conclude that infinite three-dimensional existence can stack into any size four dimensional existence. This means if we don't live in a 3 + 1 System we should observe the relative state or shape of the universe as flat or compressed in a non evenly distributed matter and basically we should observe a stacked effect of three-dimensional existence which would make a relatively flat universe or at least a universe in a distribution matter that is non spherical and evenly distributed... so because of this we can conclude that we are not the fundamental highest spatial Dimension and that a fourth spatial Dimension must exist and if so then infinite three-dimensional Universal potentiality can stack into any size four dimensional existence so ultimately this proves a Multiverse. Just remember infinite three-dimensional Universal potentiality can stack into any size four dimensional existence... this means that because the observed state of the universe is flat or non evenly distributed in a spherical manner then this means there is extra dimensional influence compressing the state making it stack and if a fourth spatial Dimension exists then a infinite Multiverse must exist and the stack ability must exist therefore this observed phenomenon means that a fourth spatial Dimension must exist making a infinite three-dimensional Multiverse the standard Norm....

The best part of all of this is to watch Chuck. Basically, Neil and Brian are talking shop talk, and Chuck is along for the ride until Chuck has his epiphany. That is what I love the most. He got it. Then he says he feels included, rather than the 3rd wheel. Now Chuck is on board, and he is concentrating so hard. I love his funny quips and interpretations, but now that he is there and in the moment, it's just a beautiful thing to see him now a part of the team. I love Chuck, but it way more fun to see him celebrate after his breakthrough.

Oh yea, it is so wonderful to watch someone getting so hyped about understanding something 😁
Last time that happened to me a couple years ago, I had an opposite reaction - I was sitting in silence for a few mintutes, just absorbing the fact that a strong nuclear force is the energy that is released during the explosion of a fission bomb. And you can measure that force... In a Helium atom, it is a bit over 20 Newtons. Between two protons... Two particles with completly negligible size compared to our size, produce a force of 20 Newtons between them. A bag of 2kg of potatoes. Between two protons.
It took a while to absorb that thought. And make me truely understand why "strong" nuclear force is called this way.
And then the amount of matter undergoing fission during the bomb explosion, suddenly made so much more sence. 😉
That's something you kind of knew, the information was there in your head. But the full understanding of the fact came much later.

Therefore thsnk you so much for, purposefully or not, you amazing people, made it in this podcast much more easier for us who do not have physics brains, to understand everything you talked about. If my physics teacher in school explained thingd this way instead of dissing all of us who couldnt understand the science way of explanation, first of all all of us whould have had higher grades and much more important we would have developed understanding of physics, also appreciation and love even. Should we rethink our methods for solving the Schrödinger equation and take Feynman’s path integral approach in discretized space instead of using basis sets and molecular orbitals? 🤔

When my ex left, i was really depressed. It just happened that science documentaries were explaining how the stars were so far apart, that when the milky-way and Andromeda merge the chances of two stars colliding are nearly zero. And that is how lonely i was feeling.. so i painted stars and galaxies and black holes and nebulae and comets... in fact we sold the house, and their kids loved it and it is still painted how i did it.

Like the wonderful young couple that bought the house! She went to daycare there, and her kids love the paintings, and it shows as vast and infinite the universe is... at the same time it's not!

@@silvershadow013It is extremely simple to understand these are one-dimensional string membranes that are destroyed by The Singularity of a black hole and once this happens they are in a state in between 0 and 1 dimensional this creates Dark Matter coming out of black holes and what is considered non baryonic matter. Just remember infinite three-dimensional Universal potentiality can stack into any size four dimensional existence... this means that because the observed state of the universe is flat or non evenly distributed in a spherical manner then this means there is extra dimensional influence compressing the state making it stack and if a fourth spatial Dimension exists then a infinite Multiverse must exist and the stack ability must exist therefore this observed phenomenon means that a fourth spatial Dimension must exist making a infinite three-dimensional Multiverse the standard Norm.....

It is extremely simple to understand these are one-dimensional string membranes that are destroyed by The Singularity of a black hole and once this happens they are in a state in between 0 and 1 dimensional this creates Dark Matter coming out of black holes and what is considered non baryonic matter. Just remember infinite three-dimensional Universal potentiality can stack into any size four dimensional existence... this means that because the observed state of the universe is flat or non evenly distributed in a spherical manner then this means there is extra dimensional influence compressing the state making it stack and if a fourth spatial Dimension exists then a infinite Multiverse must exist and the stack ability must exist therefore this observed phenomenon means that a fourth spatial Dimension must exist making a infinite three-dimensional Multiverse the standard Norm.........

I’ve listened to the 17th minute now and I am absolutely loving it, the subject and stories being shared, the level of details talking about quarks (any science) and of course these 3 precious people (yes I love you too chuck, you’re indispensable), ABSOLUTELY MOUTHWATERING and EXCITING WATCH!
Your ad at the 18th minute about critical thinking, bias, misinformation and the Ground news reporting coupled with the examples given is perfectly done and like a cherry on top of my enjoyment watching so far.
LOOK NIEL, please please please, whatever level this conversation has, it’s superb and there should be so much more of it, please expect more of your audience and please give yourself, chuck and the fabulous Brian a hug for me in appreciation of existing in the world 💎🙏🏼

I really wish Neil would t interrupt people. I just want to hear their genius and he keeps interjecting with comments that others could make better and more coherent. It’s almost like he wants people to know how smart he is versus just letting the guest showcase why they’re a guest on the show

*At **38:13** an incorrect statement was made* about what one can see with photons. As spoken, it ONLY applies to Classical Optics, and the Confocal Microscope goes way beyond that classical limit. For instance, it allows the viewing of individual atoms using visible light. No trickery involved like a computer turning numbers into a picture. You can literally SEE the individual atoms in a sample material _using visible light,_ because the light is first sent through 'light funnels' that have exit apertures _smaller than the wavelength of light of that color!_
For instance, green laser light of 500 nm wavelength, which in Classical Optics cannot go through a hole smaller than 500 nm, is 'squeezed down' to as few as FIVE nm in the 'light funnels', thus making a light source which is much more point-like than is possible for green light _in Classical Optics._ That makes the light, which IS still green, 'act like' X-ray light with a wavelength of only 5 nm. (This size is a practical limit, not a 'law' of optics.)
*What we then find is that it is NOT the wavelength which matters; rather, what matters is the **_effective size_** of the light source.*
_How do these light funnels do this bit of 'magic,'_ you may ask. The short answer is: Using quantum effects.
The slightly less short answer is: The photons strike a plate containing many tiny tapered holes, the 'light funnels.' There the photons interact in a very interesting yet utterly commonplace way with the electrons of the atoms comprising the plate. The photons do not remain as photons; rather, this very normal process occurs that converts them into a sort of 'electron density wave' called *surface plasmon polaritons,* and it is _those plasmon waves which go down the funnels._ When those plasmon waves reach the respective ends of the funnels, some of them get _converted back into photons_ and those photons illuminate the nearby _surface under study._ The very small _effective size_ of the re-minted photons means they have very tiny uncertainties in their positions, and that allows them to have this long-unsuspected 'talent,'
That this effect never showed up in the era when Classical Optics was developed is an accident of history, because at that time, we could not make such tiny and precise holes, and we lacked lasers to illuminate the perforated plate. Thus the 'laws' of Classical Optics were developed in ignorance of the full abilities of photons, resulting in _an incomplete Theory of Optics._

Thanks for having him come on and talk about it; i've been coming back to it again and again after hearing about the lunch conversation.
