The problem was the story in the general, not the character only.
Also gameplay. Why,just God WHY did they continue to double down on casualizing classes after shadowbringers?
The story is so fucking bad. I had to start skipping some cutescenes to just stay sane.
@@aldetauri7831 skipping life to enjoy the life
@@ChimpanzeeUltraim not even kidding when I tell you all you have to do is read the first few pieces of dialog to know what is going to happen. They repeat the point over and over.
No it's not, the problem was the pacing in the start and some narrative structure, like wuk lamat beign the protagonist almost every time that she appears, besides that, dialogues, new characters and the expansion of the lore was really good
Now any criticism is going to be deflected because the VA is trans

The problem is the writing and pacing are terrible compared to previous expansions. It's basically this: receive quest from Wuk Lamat, dialogue dump, go do quest, return to Wuk Lamat, another dialogue dump, do next quest, return to Wuk Lamat, dialogue dump...it's absolute misery. I realize Natsuko Ishikawa has stepped into a director role instead of writing but they desperately need her to write the next expansion because clearly she's the only talented writer working at Square Enix currently.
The writting and the pacing is not bad, you would know this having you play, itstead your troll copy pasting what others say

@@fredy2041 Stop defending bad writing. Stormblood and ARR in terms of writing and VA were bad....we're getting a repeat when these lessons should have been learned 8 years ago.
@@fredy2041 I made it to about level 97/98 and just stopped caring. Ive never skipped MSQ cutscenes at any point until now. I was genuinely having to force myself through this expansion and i started it off really excited for it. If the games post patches are just as bad i just can't see myself enjoying this game anymore if the story and world falls apart due to horrible writing and character assassinations.
I don't think the problem is with Ishikawa being absent for DT's story writing. It's just that, after finishing the Zodiark/Hydaelyn arc in such a spectacular fashion, there was an organic need for the stakes to be smaller this time, otherwise constantly battling a universe-scale threat would get stale, and we'd get another WoW situation, with retcons upon retcons to keep the next threat greater than the previous one, but nobody really gives a damn anymore because nothing is believable. Even a writer of Ishikawa's skill couldn't salvage that situation.
exactly!
people upset by the fact that the game was exactly this failed to understand that this was the point from the start
and tbh, it annoys me that this failure is doing so much damage to the game
no it went woke woth gulool jaja wuk jamat something being the villain and some ff9 copycat garnet being like im the final.boss and becomes some mechon
Finally a sane take.
People don't like DTs MSQ because it's boring. Small stakes is not an excuse for hours and hours of talking to wuk lamat, generic fetch quests, talk to 3 NPCs for information. It's like beast tribe quality of writing for an entire msq.
It sucks too because it seems like of newer or maybe younger gamers just don’t give a damn about story anymore either. Which explains why so much gets retconned and it’s only us older gamers who grew up with some of these games are annoyed with it haha.

I played through the entirety of dawntrail, watched every cutscene. Honestly, I think people are overfixating on Wuk Lamat and completely overlooking the real biggest flaw in that story: Bakool Ja Ja. Motherf*cker almost ended civilization by releasing an apocalypse-level kaiju, and everyone's fine with that because he has a tragic backstory to excuse his behavior.
There was a point were they're talking about the Mamook issue and you ask Wuk Lamat if Bakool Ja Ja's backstory excuses what he did and she said no, but after that there didn't seem to be any real consequences for him(as of entering the level 96 storyline). "Team Rocket" antics are one thing, releasing a being that has attacks that do massive destruction and endure for decades is another. Even if no one died, the potential was there.
Then again, what would the consequence be? He's not showing his faces because he's tearing himself up inside. Gaius led armies to rain death and destruction in conquest although he was sort of killed and came back to fight against the Ascians. Emet Selch assisted in the destruction of worlds, tried to show us that it was a good thing and we killed him because he was going to see it through. Zenos treated death and killing as a game and we killed him because he was going to continue that path. Meteion's sisters wouldn't listen to her and were singing destruction to the universe and we killed them.
So maybe with Bakool Ja Ja's mental state, the traditional noble sacrifice? Maybe for the giants? Maybe something post-game will pop up since you haven't seen any repercussions for him and I'm only halfway through.
@@TheCuriousPuppyi think they lead him to noble sacrifice. But he became so chilling and cool dude, it will be sad :c
skip the story and you dont have to worry about it being bad or mid
Most of the complaints I hear is that the new character is insufferable for a good chunk of the MSQ.
I would say she's insufferable until the credits roll
90% of the lines are this character. You can't escape her.
I'd agree that she's just not a very interesting or compelling character but it has absolutely nothing to do with her having a trans VA for the English version, like Kern is suggesting. This is obvious for everyone with two brain cells to see by the reviews being mixed in every language. The issue is 100% the writing and the lack of quality/interesting elements.
not if you skipped the MSQ lol
I’m only halfway through, but the biggest problem is that Wuk Lamat just doesn’t grow and is forced on you. Her brother, the tech enthusiast Second promise, goes through a pretty big mental growth phase but just gets pushed aside for the obvious “I love everyone” good guy candidate immediately. She just really isn’t interesting of a character so far, especially compared to people like Emet or even Fourchenault
You can't compare her to emet selch. That's not fair at ALL, there aren't many characters in any ff media that can live up to him
Dude. Are you joking? Have you been paying attencion? She litersly expresses how weak she is at lvl 92. Your a liar.
@@bauloprete3905 But her personality does not change at all and she gets a random power boost out of nowhere...Bakool Ja Ja could block her strongest attack with ease , a few quests later she destroys him with his goons helping. It ist stupid.

Finished the game. Watched and read every single Cutscene, and dialogue including side characters. I thought the VA was fine, but the character writing and dialogue was atrocious. Wuk has zero character progression, which wouldn't be too bad if she was a good character. But she's basically Narurto "I want to be Hokage!" Tier, and she never changes. The characters that do get some development do so in the worst way possible. Their entire character will do full 180 flips on their beliefs in the space of two dialogue boxes. It gave me whiplash.
We wonder whether they hired a "Consultant" for the writing
I loved the story myself. The voice actress was good and almost all the characters are well written and the story was phenomenal.
edit: It was a solid Final Fantasy story without all Hydaelyn/Zodiark stuff. Plus no Ascians for once since they are mostly in the life stream now save for a couple. Yes there were some clique moments but what final fantasy game does not have that?
Shes Naruto without being all alone and going through tragedy after tragedy making you root for their dreams to finally come true.
I cannot wait to see the team mess up the game as badly as they did ff16. Once 14 falls square Enix rightfully collapses.
That was my experience, too. The story did get better in the last half, for me. I'd overall say it was good, but not as good as the last couple expansions.
Other country's VAs: Professional head shot and appearance.

The problem is that the first half of the story quest is basically the ARR Titan build up quests but waaaAAAaay longer.
No it isn't. It is a journey to learn of the myriad of cultures that live on Tural. Add to that that it is Wuk Lamat's journey for growing up. From becoming the self-conscious, childish idiot to actually becoming a good leader.
I get how people may be upset how we aren't the main character anymore. But they need to realize that this rite of succession isn't a threat to us. Wuk Lamat could have literally used us as a attack dog to immediately win any competition. But it was HER job to overcome it.
@@imaran1303It is ARR and Stormblood, but better. It is a story about growing up and filling a big shoe for Wuk Lamat. To us, its a vacation.
I go into the expansion with that mindset, and it is pretty great.
@@MenrvaS Exactly.
@@imaran1303 And the the ARR Titan build up quests were you going to earn the trust of the scattered remaining member of the company of heroes and earn their trust to understand the sacrifice required in culling the unending primal threat for ephemeral peace.
The point is, in a game that is basically a visual novel going from point A to B and talking to npc's, doing these quests are tedious and not fun and the trope of overcoming evil using the power of friendship in a plot is just poor unengaging plot-writing. To make the visual novel aspect work the plot has to be good to mask the fact that the gameplay is just talking to npcs and fetching crap. All other expansions have done a good jobs of this, Dawntrail fails miserably at this until you get to X'ak Tural/Catboy Texas.
@@wessel4111 You realize that this 'Power of friendship' thing has been a thing since Heavensward right? Heck! FF14 was never really about fighting mobs in our MSQ outside of dungeons and trials and solo instances. Dollar store villains, phoned in characters, and extreme amounts of unnecessary fluff is what decreased the quality of the story by an order of magnitude. It's a significant drop in quality, that's why people are getting frustrated with it. Pointing to the characters and the English VA work of Wut Lamat is just one of many factors that lead to this, but it's also the easiest one to point out.
There's so many areas you can point to that signify weak direction, rushed development, or a lack of concern for the story they were telling. So many scenes where characters talk about how they feel instead of acting. So many scenes where the WoL is just standing near the edge of the frame watching other people do stuff. Hell, they didn't even bother providing alternate cutscene animations for Healers; if somebody is injured or dying, the WoL just stands watching while Alphinaud, Krile, and Alisaie do the generic hand-extended healer animation.
wild they didn't tell one of the villains that Garlemald is gone and everyone wants peace....
@@Chippaization Which villain are you referring to? I'm pretty sure everyone involved knew Garlemald is no longer a threatening force. Zooral Ja's claimed philosophy is to teach the populace to appreciate peace via subjecting them to warfare but that's also just a smokescreen to his own personal issues.
@@Chippaization Okay, all critism aside - one of those villians directly adresses Garlemald being destryoed due to dumb leadership, which he wasn't wrong about. One of their leaders literally thrown their whole culture and nation into civil war. Which he thinks won't be the case with him. You could say it's dumb, but not that it wasn't adressed
@@starbog1dude just said "garlemald wuz dumb lmao" and then proceeded to be a bigger tard than Varis ever was politically and militarily. Guy was EXTREMELY nearsighted in his goals. The Garleans at least had the whole ascian internal subterfuge plot mixed in with the inability to reach peace with eorzea due to wanting to get rid of all the eikons and eikon worship even if those gods were the twelve themselves.
The problem of dawntrail is the pacing. They basically make the story "I want to become Hokage" to a slow crawl with more cutscene which does not even have impact. Which lead to, early burn out.
Literally where I’m at. I haven’t even finished the lv90 quests, and I’m ok with a bit of development at a MODERATE pace to start setting the grounds for the story, and I’m painfully bored. I’m having to force myself through seemingly endless chores; it’s tribal quest MSQ from the feels of it. I get that it’s Wuk Lamats story but they could spice it up just a little to make it more interactive instead of tedious (and they could have made her a bit less of a dope). It’s to the point that I’m about to start skipping cs if they are irrelevant (which has been the majority thus far) and I don’t like that because I don’t want to miss something that could potentially be relevant to the plot. Relevancy shouldn’t be buried in a mound of waste. The story itself has been ok, kinda slow, but enough to keep my attention but let me stab something, or see someone get stabbed or a pie to the face, dammit lol
@@stanktatiousd7732 Yeah I'm not done either, still at the level 98 MSQ, but the first half took waaaaaay too long. The rite of succession should not have been half the expansion, OR they should have made it more interesting for us. That whole arc is us just being Wuk's lackey doing chores for her the entire time while absolutely nothing happens story-wise. It's painful. The second half isn't too bad so far, things start to pay off a bit more, but I haven't finished it yet, so can't say completely how it is. At any rate, it is better than the first half.

People emphasizing what isn't important often times hurts explaining what is. They went full WoW storytelling with this expansion; your character is just there as things happen, and you're a side kick to someone you have no connection with while also not being given proper motivation as to why you're supporting them. Not only that, but the characters you do know don't act like themselves for the sake of not overshadowing the main character (again, not you). It is the Thrall situation all over again with them being over used for several areas and then coming back to take the spotlight again. Little player agency and their new writers not being true to the established characters. Back in Shadowbringers they had new characters with each zone, along with established characters you knew interacting with them equally. Then they showed up again when it made sense in the story and you were either glad to see them or get some closure.
This expansion reminded me of WoW story telling so much that I looked up the date for the pre-patch while playing it.
This is a very interesting perspective thank you
The game reached it's natural endpoint in Endwalker. They're dragging out an already finished title in order to milk the whales. That's why it's so bad. It's the same reason most comic books end up as shit after a while.
Everything stems from that.
The problem wasn't Wuk Lamat herself so much as ignoring the path that was already travelled in the previous expansion. Either they cut stuff because of limited cutscene time or the writer wasn't entirely versed in Endwalker. The biggest example of this issue occurs In the later half of the game. There is a feat from the previous expansion that carries with it a great deal of emotional weight to various characters. There is a deeply touching, thought provoking moment that was never realized which should have occurred, but did not. To see potential unrealized is bittersweet at its best and vexing at its worst. The community is grappling with how to express it in these reviews. Also, I always have jp voice acting on so this is news to me.

On average, Wuk Lamat's VA isn't terrible. The issue is, she has a full HALF of the dialogue in the story, and anyone could tell you that gives a VA plenty of opportunities to fudge a line or two, and runs the time available to fine tune direction and vocal deliveries to razor thin margins. It was a recipe for disaster, and disaster did happen a few times, which soured the whole end product.
They picked bad clips to showcase the VA. Any time an emotion is needed she delivers the most flat, monotone performance imaginable. That voice you heard here is the same one she uses when she's in pitched combat for her life.

Here's the issue with this expansion's MSQ, it uses the story structure formula of XI that has you be the sidekick of whomever is the main character of the expansion, in Dawntrail that's Wuk Lamat.
So everything relies on Wuk Lamat actually being a good character and if she isn't then everything goes to shit. They had to make sure she was written and voiced competently and they completely blew it.
Unironically she's like Naruto, a shonen protagonist, which isn't everyone's cup of tea, but the larger issue is her english voice acting which is completely flat. This is the most obvious whenever she does speeches in front of a crowd.
It's a bad formula. Players have hundreds of hours invested into their characters by this point in the story and won't react well to being made second-fiddle for some Poochie in a poorly paced and directed narrative. This doesn't mean the players want a power-fantasy that worships the ground they walk on, but just to have a story that respects them and their time (in a game they pay for). Players would have been absolutely thrilled if 30% of DT was just walking around Tural on vacation doing frivolous stuff with their favorite Scions, but instead these characters are barely present in the story, so that the WoL can stand at the edge of the screen while Wuk Lamat talks.
Just call it as it is. Complete garbage. I know you guys are trying to not sound offensive, but the va is really terrible. They could have picked a random woman from the streets, and she would have done a better job, and I'm not exaggerating.
I much prefer 11s formula myself.
As someone who hasn't played FFXI or FFXIV a day in my life and only know it by researching it and listening to friends, your comment is the clearest at explaining the issue to me. It's one of those situations where we don't need to know shit to be able to read your comment and be able to tell you know what you're talking about which then makes us informed.
Just had to say that because I also try to avoid games where the game treats me like a sidekick. It's not an interesting way to make a game in most cases. I think Bioshock 1 is the only time it's been done masterfully, and a handful of other games do it without ruining the game like the Fire Emblem series. But most of the time it just serves to make you feel like the game is mechanics only and like you're pointless and wasting your time.
Anyway, great comment.
Its just a long and drawn out escort quest with a weird overconfident and WEAK character that cause 90% of the trouble in the DLC. At least Naruto is likable and isn't reliant on others while still saying he is hot shit. He is Hot shit because he can back it up.

The consultant is not DEI... She's been on the team for a long time even working side by side with Koji Fox through SHB and was lead for EW. She is an inhouse localization lead literally just like Koji Fox was. She took the spot when Koji Fox went to lead the localization for FF16. @@F34RDSoldier805 She may not be DEI, but I have had major issues with the FFXIV localization for a LONG time. The vast majority of the translations are not just incorrect, but the tone and intent of the dialogue is often drastically different from the Japanese source. I play the game with Japanese voices and English text, and I'm constantly cringing at how bad the translation is. Most characters are like different people in Japanese than they are portrayed in English. It'd be quite difficult to point to a single line of text that is not largely changed from the source.
@@F34RDSoldier805it is DEI
@@Hirome_Satou That's because they would write a completely original version for the english and Japanese language. They literally wrote them side by side. So the english version isn't a direct translate of the japanese version, but a side by side creation. Koji Fox would explain how he would sit with the lead writer and they would go off one another on how the story is written. It's why it feels more natural in english than other translations of japanese creations, where it would sound "anime" in english dub. This method would remove that. They did the same with FF16. You might take this as a bad thing if you don't like the english version, but it's not. Yoshi-P has also said that he doesn't like it when people say the dialogue of the stories sound too "anime" when in English. He wants it to sound natural in both English and Japanese. If you don't think they achieve that, idk what you want or your just being disingenuous, because they absolutely hit that. FF games made by CBU3 sound by far the most natural in english as compared to literally any other FF game ever for that reason. They put a ton of work into achieving that. I understand people are trying to find reason into convincing themselves and others that this is a bad thing, but it's not, because they aren't localization as much as they are written twice from the ground up for english and Japanese.
If you want to know more, try to find one of the Fanfest dev panels where Koji Fox talks about their writing process. They don't do the traditional "localization" methods of just translating Japanese to english. They do as I explained, which is much more thorough and done on complete collaboration with the JP writers AS they write it. This is likely why the text doesn't directly translate to JP voice audio. Because it wasn't meant to. They are two different versions of the same script created for their respective languages, and since the two languages don't translate directly to one another without sounding unnatural in one language or the other, the result is that you get a sub that isn't directly translating the JP dialogue. It is what it is. If they didn't do this, people would cry about the unnatural english dialogue like they do with anime dubs. This services the vast majority of players better by miles. The only people who will complain about this current method are super weebs that refuse to play the English version even when it's great. That simple.
The voice actress being trans has nothing to do with the fact she just didnt have the chops for the role. And the writing team dropped the ball on things at several points. There wasnt any woke stuff I really noticed other than peace love and friendship but thats hardly woke.

Some of the main issues is that this time your character is a npc (which has been a mixed reception). When you finally get to shine, Wuk Lamat takes that away from you. Wuk Lamat is very much a love or hate character. on top of that, ALOT of the voiceless cutscenes relayed important information that relates to the story. Which didn't make sense. With the biggest issue I had was the short time you had in Shalloani.
I'v heard Wuk Lamat been described as 'The Poochie' of FF 14, and yeah its been that so far into the story.
Luckily for us, if even awesome characters as Aymeric technically disappeared after their story arc, we'll get rid of her very soon, let's hope they learn from this and don't screw it up again
Love you editor for always adding context.
For me immersion in story broke very early on when I realized "Yeah, my WoL could have solved this real easy real quick". We even came to call expansion Cucktrail in shouts because how much ppl were held back from doing shit in story.
I'm not invested in the lore the slightest, from a get-go they want me to read literal "wall of text" as a lore dump - yeah, no buddy - skip. You don't even get to hit anything until lvl 91 or 92 which is insane. You could get away with that in EW because we were invested in story but this is not how you setup new story. My last MSQ(MSQ!!!) quest was picking up bird shit. I just couldn't... I get it we are in full reset but it feels too much like ARR.

WoL solving everything would literally go against the point of the story, which is for Lamat to go through the trial and grow. I don't like her very much either, but to say WoL should have just solved everything shows that you weren't paying attention or didn't actually play through it.

Yeah, I had no idea she was trans, cause when a friend showed me a clip it sounded like a woman. So what's my issue? The lack of emotion, that it sounds like AI according to a friend (giving him no context), sounds just plain and the exact same all the time, and worse of all, it makes me feel I'm on a call with customer support in India.
So far I can't say shit about the story since I haven't finished, but the VA was bad enough for me to go JP and god what a difference from the way I see the character.

>Sounded like a woman
You might need a hearing aid.
The VA can't show emotion without their actual male voice coming through.
It actually makes sense now if its a MTF. They HAVE to tspeak in lowercase at all times because if they actually put emotion into their voice you'll hear the man underneath and it'll break immersion.
He's going to play it right after finishing cyberpunk
what makes the MSQ worse is that neither the scions or WOL speak up when something is amiss since they have plenty of knowledge in dealing with things...it's like the writers don't know what they have done or achieved plus the hyper shonen "power of friendship fixes all problems" and "loves" all her people....when she never seemed to have left the city once in her life outside of meeting us during the last expansion....hell even all the new skills are lackluster as hell.
I have no issue with the VA or the voice of the character. What really makes her insufferable was the fact that the whole expansion was literally baby sitting this stupid cow and it felt as if the person who wrote this expac added their oc into the game and shifted focus from the player being the main character. Here are the criticisms of the character, and all are quite fair.
1) Even though the voices and region are based on South America, and South American women don't really find a lot of roles, they hired a greenhorn from the USA who is MtF to fake the accent. The accent doesn't sound authentic to the region.
2) The VA is doing her best, but she clearly doesn't have the skills to fake the accent and give emotion when not speaking at moderate volume. Any shouting or anger or such emotions come out dull and flat, or lose the accent.
3) More evidence is being shown each day that they altered the story during English localization to fit a more Western agenda. With a lot of the context removed, there are scenarios in the story where people perform actions that make no sense at all, and it comes across as arbitrary deus ex machina as a result.
4) The writing for Wuk Lamat is how Zack's friend described it. It's 'okay'. 'Okay' when compared to all the other characters is painful. It is like a fake, washed-out paste ruby sitting among a collection of carefully-cut and shined ceylon sapphires, tacky and distracting. 'Okay' is garbage.
5) Some of it is just lazy-goofy. Comedy and fun are great, but as an example... repurposing a minion that looks like a Mickey Mouse glove (based on the selection cursor) to point to find something, and playing it off as a serious arcane device? Not even in a playful moment. It's a life-or-death situation.

There definitely are issues with Wuk Lamat. The voice acting isn't terrible, but it falls really flat in certain points. There's story beats where I expected more emotion or fluctuation in the voice actor's delivery, but they just come off as flat and amateurish. Whether this was an issue with the VA's experience or the directing, I'm not sure, but some of the criticism is certainly valid. I feel it wouldn't be too noticeable, but considering Wuk Lamat is essentially the protagonist of this expansion and the spotlight is directly on her, all these issues are amplified and put front and center. It doesn't help also that the story was not very well thought-out it seems. I am glad the whole ascian story is over, but I feel they could have done better hyping us up for something new. Wuk Lamat is certainly not as strong as a leading lady I'm afraid.

On the bright side, Ayaka Shimoyamada does a great job in making her sound like an adorable idiotic kitten when they swing for comedy.
At least Lyse was stupid and naive and people were treating her as a child and help her grow up which eventually she did and became somewhat competent leader.
Here Wuk Lamat is worthless and sort of self-aware of that but ignoring this fact anyway most of the time. As a controversial opinion haver I don't give a hoot about a VA being trans or not; that voice acting just wasn't very good.
The mixed reviews on Steam are not for any political reason but simply because people find the Dawntrail MSQ to be pretty undercooked.
From what I've been told by others, it's not just Wuk Lamat,, some of the other VA (English and otherwise) also have some wooden or phoned-in performances (specifically among the Scions) because they have so few lines saying not much of anything important that you get the impression a lot of the VAs weren't sure why they were brought in to record anything at all.

Nice they made a Race for them in game. 😂
Having just finished it over the weekend, I just want to provide some context. As the tweet said: a lot of people are upset on the focus of the story shifting from the character they've been playing for the last 10 years to a newly (relatively speaking) introduced NPC. I can certainly understand and appreciate that. Now I'm not going to say the writing for Dawntrail was as good as it was for Shadowbringers or Endwalker (personally I didn't think DT's writing was that bad, but that's besides the point), the problem the writers come to is The Superman Problem: how do you write a compelling story with a character so stronger that they can - in FF14's case - defeat abstract concepts like the despair of an entire universe.
Well you've got two routes. 1, the DBZ Route: just have the main character keep getting ridiculously stronger while still somehow managing to find villains that are even more ridiculously stronger. Or 2, the One Punch Man Route: have the story be more about the characters around the super strong character. Personally I say the second route is the better, and this is the route FF14 went with. They immediately run into another problem though: if you're going with the 2nd route then you still need your super strong character to be an actual character. This is not the case in FF14 where the Warrior of Light is meant to be a blank slate self insert for the player. Since the player character has no agency in the story, when a story gets written like how it is in Dawntrail it reduces the hero from being Heroic Adventurer That Saved The World to being a chaperone watching over the kiddies to make sure they don't get hurt while they're playing adventure.
Another way to look at it is that it exacerbates a problem that's been present for a few expansions: that the other characters treat the Warrior of Light as though they're just a blunt object to bash problems with. Like they're some kind of goon, just The Muscle for a mafia family. WoL: "Ay Alphinaud, you wants I should mess up this guy or sumtin'?"
Personally I didn't have a problem with it as I was able to enjoy the ride through the expansion, but I can very easily see why this change in writing would piss some people off.
There's a third route, but they'd never do it for an MMO.
That's *actually let the story end at the ending* by the way.
Endwalker was the natural conclusion to FF14. They should have let it *be* that ending. If they wanted to make a sequel, they should have made an actual sequel, and not have us tread along as literally one of the most powerful characters in the history of the entire damn franchise.
I'm almost done with the MSQ, and for the most part I like Wuk Lamat's character. For me the issue is with the VA's vocal range.
It just feels off to me; especially with her sounds like shouts, screams, and battle cries. They don't really come off as scared or threatening as I feel they were intended to invoke.

They dropped the ball on the story and thus the audience they cultivated split. One group is huffing copium "it's actually good guys", the other is actually saying what they don't like.
When it comes to Wuk Lamat. I didnt even knew she was trans to begin with. I've come back after stopping playing early into endwalker (soon after new pvp was released, cause I felt lost in the game as a new player who finished msq and lacking sites like wowhead to tell me essentially step by step to x type of content). I was doing the patches content and didnt really like it, apparently it's good when it works as nostalgia bait for whichever ff game it was.
When I watched the launch trailer I havent even met the cat in game, but holy fuck the "I wanna be hokage" being 9/10 of her lines in that trailer instantly put me off. Having watched it again I noticed the meh delivery. Out of curiosity I googled "wuk lamat bad" and Google told me I'm a transphobe, soo there's that.
@@The_YukkiNo way Google did that 😅
@@sagen06 I mean "google" is obv an oversimplification it was the first iirc reddit thread that I opened.
@@The_Yukki I mean you can tell, come on. There's certain scenes where the VA strains the voice and it really cracks. For me they're just not well suited to the role, and it's already a badly written one.
I haven't finished yet but I quite like the story. It's an adventure and seeing someone grow. The warrior of light doesn't have to save the universe again.. a story can be good without huge stakes.
I only feel like the whole power of friendship was annoying but I didn’t mind the character
Even stormblood was way better than base DT. Combat and encounters are carrying DT.
Agreed
So would the rank of best to worst expansions be-
Shadowbringers - Endwalker - Heavensward - StormBlood - Dawntrail - A Realm Reborn
@@TacoLex I loved ARR ngl, so much world building and lore in it if you do every single side quest. Graphics and outfits were nothing to brag about, but wouldn't have the FF14 we have now without it. Pretty much setup everything we accomplished in Endwalker. Besides the Stormblood story was a snooze, and ARR had way more intrigue compared to it.
@@TacoLex yup, that would be my ranking as well.
@@TacoLex Endwalker 9. Heavensward 8.5. Stormblood 8 (because of yotsuyu). ARR 7 (cheesy power rangers but good lore building). Dawntrail 6. (7/10 but 6/10 in ff14s standards).
Shadowbringers 11/10. Peak fiction.
Why didn't they compare the voice work done by the other languages? That's how you actually realize whether the troon sucks or not as a VA
voice doesnt matter, its fanfiction level story and wokeness overall is the issue, as i mentioned renaming beast tribes into societies because tribes is offencive or something? lol
@@glimoreganajai2206 they renamed beast tribes because most of them aren’t even beast tribes now, its more accurate to change the title. You’re literally looking for problems where none exist.

No they are beasts, just like hrothgars.

I hope someday he gets to enjoy FFXIV again without his stream to deal with. He's never gotten to experience the best parts which is a little sad. Also the game is currently fine.
Wuk Lamat does have some Mary Sue moments, but not as egregious as some are making it out to be. She's better written than Lyse in Stormblood is, IMO anyway.

@bauloprete3905 the sheer amount of comments you are replying to is kind of sad. And, no, critiquing the writing isn't being phobic. Go back to Disney with that weak argument.

Anytime now Baldo~~
sorry, if you hear the other languages, you can hear the subtle emotions, and charms the character brings, but in english, her voice is just way to... idk what the word would be, not monotoned, but has a weird "beat" that she refuses to ever go off of, and it ruins various emotional moments.
the character herself is mostly fine and sometimes likable, just the acting kills the moment.
It's called trying not to have a voice crack from playing two roles at once. This is why you hire real voice actors and not a drug addict from LA.
Especially given that Spanish is a very poetic and romantic language...all the feeling and emotion is just drained out. Given the fact that the VA is supposed to be of Puerto Rican heritage, they just lack that combustion you would hear in a Latina woman.
Bad hire is a bad hire.
@@OilFreeFeathers I'd say it has more to do with the fact they are a man trying to voice a woman and can't go off their forced woman voice otherwise it'll sound like a dude.

What happened to Natsuko Ishikawa?
She got promoted. Good for her, bad for us I guess. :/
She got promoted to higher position
@@dafire9634 Higher position but bear in mind it's the same one Oda has and he does very little actual writing these days. ;)
promoted, and she was working very much on 16 with Yoshi while DT was being written.

Good to see a nuanced take from baldy and the community. Not everything is bad because of DEI, some stories/characters are bad just because of bad story telling. It was so funny to see those woke-leaning subs immediately claiming after mark’s tweet that asmon will immediately join the hate bandwagon thinking asmon doesn’t know how to have nuanced takes. From what I’ve seen, it’s clearly a problem with the VA directing for the English side and nothing to do with the VA at all. She’s pretty good on her other works and the issue of bad EN VA doesn’t just occur on her character but the other cast as well
He's said before, none of that shit matters if the games fun. And there does exist games with it that are highly rated(supposedly Hades 2? IDK, I just seen tons of people bitching about it, but I've played all of the Early Access and ain't seen shit). It's just there's a little segment of the "anti-woke" crowd, a decent little portion, maybe 30-40% that do this.
And I'm just gonna say it, they're probably like genuinely very stupid people, like actual low IQ adults and perhaps some young adults. They're just poor gamers who have made the association between bad games and that stuff, which is completely understandable considering most of the times it exists it appears as though it's at the expense of the quality. Pretty clearly I'd say, when that is the case.
Not sure why the fact games exist which are GOATS with that type of stuff doesn't brute force some reason and perspective in their minds, but also like Asmons said before, just like we have people on the opposite end of all this that are completely radicalized, so too I'm sure are these people. Too far gone AND stupid, they're straight fucked.
Nothing nuanced about it. This is the attitude that lets DEI thrive. Most things that are woke influenced are garbage. Giving them the benefit of the doubt at this point is downright foolish.
My problem is it was like she couldn't project. Every time the scene would make more sense if her line had some projection in her voice (addressing a crowd of her people, barging into the trial at the end) it just wasn't there.
I find Wuk Lamat's story has a lot of parallels to Lyse's story and as characters they share a couple of the less admirable traits. The main issue I find with Wuk Lamat (and Lyse) is that these characters pretty well accomplish nothing without the player character. They are children acting like adults but never truly rise to the occasion like how so many previously and beloved characters have.
Honestly I'm just not sure if it was the right role for the VA in general, I feel like having the accent be faked the entire time, with a character that's like 75% of the voiced dialog was a mistake. She can do good work I'm sure, but having to maintain an impression AND have big emotional deliveries is too much.
Really, I'm just worried they hired someone new and inexperienced for the role simply because they'd be cheaper, with all the lines required. But as a lot of people have said, the VA is the last of Dawntrail's issues, story-wise
