Cover songs are like movie sequels. The original can not be topped but sometimes you get a surprise. Shinedown did this straight justice!

Their original stuff is great, his voice is one of the best in rock, “45” is great, “save me” is dope, I love “sound of madness” too and “what a shame” is another personal favorite, just to give you a few good options
My interpretation: in the original, Skynyrd had a special sound. They had a three guitar band, plus a bass player, a piano/B3 organ player, a drummer, a lead vocalist, plus background vocalists. Inspite of their instrumentation and vocals, they gave each other space (in the musical since) to work. Shinedown's version of this song is, comparatively, a stripped back version, where the focus is on the weight of the lyrics. It's an omage, if you will, to the power of the song's meaning. Shinedown does a wonderful job by paying tribute to a powerful band, playing a powerful song, but covers the song in their own way, and reintroduces the song to a newer generation that might not have heard it before. I say "well done."

Their guitarist when this was recorded was actually married to the daughter of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s vocalist.

They have to pay the royalty regardless of getting permission. And permission is needed from whoever owns the recording rights. Which is not necessarily the band or artist.
Shinedown is from Jacksonville as was Skynyrd.

Their first is absolutely the best!! I love them so much but a little less compared to the first two and especially first. But anything on the first CD is the best.

Metallica has tons of great covers but if I had to choose the best it's gotta be "Am I Evil".
Every time I hear this it always brings a tear to my eye, I've had the luck of seeing them live and they really don't disappoint. One of the most humbling bands I've listened to and one of the few ive stayed consisted with for the past 15 years (29 now).
Played this at my grandpa’s funeral. Brings tears to my eyes. The only time I’ve seen my dad weep in tears in my entire life!

Former Shinedown guitarist "Jasin Todd" married the daughter of "Ronnie Van Zant", the lead singer of Lynyrd Skynyrd. Though it is a cover there is more to it than just that.
Very true. Both bands are from Jacksonville, Florida and when Shinedown started out they used to play a venue called Freebird Live, which was owned by Judy Van Zant, who is Ronnie's widow (and the mother of Melody, who is married to Jasin Todd). Shinedown played this as a thank you to Judy for supporting them and as a tribute to Ronnie. Incidentally, in the official video for this song there is a little girl holding a picture of a man - that man in the picture is Ronnie Van Zant and the little girl is his grand-daughter. The best comment I read about this relationship is "even most Shinedown fans don't realise that Shinedown are Lynyrd Skynyrd family."

Brent Smith is just amazing! His acoustic cover sessions with Zach Myers are crazy good. I'd say 99% of them are at least as good as the originals, if not better.

Love both versions. Of course grew up on Lynyrd Skynyrds my entire life cuz it’s older than me, but Brent smith brought so much to add on to the classic for sure. I actually found myself enjoying or jamming into more covers lately.
Best thing about covers is they bring the original to an audience that might not have heard it otherwise.

Seeing this performed live by Shinedown was absolutely incredible, gave me goosebumps.
It's not a cover as much as an homage. The bands guitarist at the time was married to Ronnie Van Zant's daughter. Ronnie being the lead singer of Skynyrd, Shinedown wanted to pay tribute to family roots and to their Jacksonville roots.
This band is my all time favorite so I need more from them. Leave a whisper is a KILLER album some of there old music

I love Southern Rock. Lynyrd Skynyrd released this song when I was young. So I have heard it for a long time. I never thought that it was a great song , until Shinedown sang it.

45 by Shinedown is my favorite song out theirs. I saw them live a few years back and it was absolutely amazing.
It's awesome that you are finally doing Shinedown, and though I absolutely love their rendition of Simple Man, it's a true shame that you didn't start with one of their amazing originals. And there truly are a lot of amazing Shinedown songs including, but not limited to "Sound of Madness, Diamond Eyes, The Crow & the Butterfly, 45, Bully, I'll Follow You, Through the Ghost, and the list just goes on and on.
"Save Me" by Shinedown is a great song about addiction and crying for help. It has a rawness that you can tell came from their personal experiences.
Do "45" by Shinedown. It was early in their career when the singer's voice was at its best.

I love you're guys analysis, even though you guys are rap guys which I'm more of nowadays but I grew up with rock over listening to it, this song being 1 of them you guys nailed this song along with LS version.
Shinedown is my favorite band and has been for years. I reccomend some songs from the sound of madness album like the "second chance" or "the crow and the butterfly." The amaryllis album is also very underrated.

In all honesty I think they could pick pretty much any one of their songs (preferably one of their longer one's) make a list, with the song titles all over the page and just point to one or throw a dart. especially because LIV likes to pay attention to the lyrics. And Brent Smith is a Lyrical Mastermind!

Just came across this and thought and I’d like to share; It's very personal to them. Both bands are from Jacksonville, Fl and Shinedown original guitarist was married to the late Skynard original singer (Ronnie’s) daughter. They also regularly played at a venue called Freebird Live which was owned by Ronnie widowed wife. So it's not only a cover, but a huge tribute to Ronnie (original lead singer) his wife. Crazy!

Oh you should see them do it live....it's friggin AWESOME 💗 Brett recorded this a while back when they were still the best kept secret, he totally nailed this cover. I love Skynyrd but Shinedown took it to another level.
If I remember correctly, one of the members is a nephew of one of the Lynyrd Skynyrd members, and they covered this with the permission and blessing of the surviving members and widows of those who passed away.
He did the song for Ronnie's wife. They didn't do the song for the album. The band stayed with Ronnie's family when they first started out. They loved it so much they gave them permission to put it on the album.

Shinedown is literally family with Lynard Skynard. Shinedowns original guitarist Jasin Todd is married to the late, great, Ronnie VanZant ( original singer from Skynard) daughter, Melody VanZant. The little blonde girl in the video is Ronnie's granddaughter. Shinedown and Skynard are both from Florida

The amazing thing I realized with this comment is I don't believe I have heard Prince sing his own song. I don't see how he tops Cornell though. Cornell has probably two of the best covers of all time with Nothing Compares 2 U and Billy Jean. The dude's voice just adds so much to almost any song.

The guitarist for Shinedown is married to the Daughter of Leonard Skinnard's Ronnie Van Zandt. That's the connection. They did "Simple Man" as a tribute and a Thanks to them.
There is one thing about covers I never hear mentioned, these bands/musicians love music, these are the songs they love listening to, that they played while learning and just to have fun and jam.
A lot of times when covers are done they are out of respect and fandom to the original artists, they just have a bigger platform then most of us to play them other then in basements, garages, and bars.
Just important to remember covers are made out of love of music.
