    Very good video! Only thing I want to mention is that the Nicole investigation story ends with the reveal of Isaac pushing her to take the job on the ishimura, not the reveal of her death which is revealed in the end by Daniels. Imo the reveal has always been weak, since every time we meet "Nicole" she's acting too weird to be believable, it's more there to cement Issac's descent into madness than to fool the player.

    I always presumed that Isaac did all the stuff he thought Nicole did, but just didn't remember because he was so mind addled by the Marker. GIven what we know about how the third game was supposed to play like with "dark Isaac", this makes sense even if it was unintentional. Considering how the Marker seemed to guide him I doubt Isaac would have been the wiser if Nicole turned out to be a gaggle of necromorphs.

    • @thefantasticfiend
      @thefantasticfiend  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's fair I did as well when I played the original, I just wish they could have used the plot hole a bit more after giving Isaac a voice. When I was playing through the remake I was thinking about the plot hole.

    As someone who never finished the original, I got maybe 3 hours in and never got round to finishing it, I gotta say I really enjoyed the game. Obviously there valid points about what original did better but the remake certainly feels like a premium AAA experience.

    The Remake was so good. Something that really made the experience feel new but similar was the environments with the corruption growth had fog and low visibility and the toxic gas made it harder to see the necromorphs (that were redesigned perfectly and more grotesque) coming after you. Another detail that I really thought was cool was the remaking of the posters, ads and other signs throughout the ishimura. And of course I love that the remake expanded on the games lore, Resident evil 4 remake did the same thing.

  • @Edsabre
    @Edsabre ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I'm so confused! How did the Nicole questline spoil her death? The last thing we learn is the vid call where Isaac blames her for his parent's death and she tells him to "go to hell" before ending the call. Isaac even says its not too late and he can save them both.
    I agree with almost everything you say but I'm gonna fight you on the changes to Nicole and her quest. The new side quests and dialogue, along with Isaac's newly found voice, does so much to improve not only the characters of Isaac and Nicole, but also gives more insight into their relationship. In the OG, Nicole was barely a footnote for most of the story. You see her video in the beginning, she shows up like twice to help you out, during which Isaac doesnt interact with her at all due to his silence, and then she follows you a bit in the last chapter before you get your twist at the end. The twist was amazing, but taking the time to improve on their characterization and flesh them and their relationship out makes the twist of her death sting so much harder.
    I also still think that the theme of guilt that plagues Isaac in the sequel is still intact, as the new storyline in the remake shows that Isaac thinks she is alive and wants to reconcile the horrible interaction they had on that last video call before it's too late. However, in the sequel he has now come to grips with the fact that she is dead, which is where the guilt of sending her to the Ishimura begins to eat him up. In both games he feels guilt and sorrow for what he's done, but in the remake he's fueled by the hope of reconciliation and the chance at saving her, but in the sequel he's weighed down by the death and the guilt of the part he played in it.
    One tidbit I want to say about the subject is this: When you find the audio log that has their vid call from the intro Dead Space 2, it plays out exactly the same, BUT, you get a little more of Isaac's audio at the end and as he's trying to maintain connection he says "I miss you, NIcci" and the fact that he calls her Nicci in that one moment fucking broke me, man. It was the smallest of touches that added just a little bit of affection to their relationship.
    Anywho, great video! Subscribed!

    • @thefantasticfiend
      @thefantasticfiend  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm so glad you enjoyed the video, and I appreciate the subscription!
      I personally felt that the big reveal that Nicole was dead came out of nowhere with the side quest. Isaac does a bunch of investigating that gives him a conclusive answer on the state of their relationship but not whether or not Nicole is dead and then out of nowhere he hallucinates screens lighting up and suddenly has a memory come out of nowhere. The way the memory scene was done was essentially screaming in the player's face that she was super dead. I didn't feel like the answer was earned. I preferred the original reveal with Daniels keeping that information from Isaac, I think it makes her more sinister that way and is more earned. Daniels still kept the info from Isaac in the remake, but because of the investigation plotline, I already knew, and the dramatic reveal was like "yeah I know" instead of "Holy shidgklfrdnvvkflddsnngkfdo." I do agree that the remake still makes Isaac be on the ship because he is trying to save Nicole, but the guilt doesn't really become apparent until DS2 for Isaac, after she is dead (originally for voice reasons). I think this is one of the times that less is more, DS1 has so much happening already. Isaac is mainly focused on surviving for the majority of the story. With regards to Nicole, I'd rather play with his denial of her death and because Isaac is a vessel for the player, keep us in denial as well.
      I agree that the story with Nicole was more fleshed out in the remake and the worldbuilding was amazing but I think they gave too much away through the plotline. I believe it would have been stronger if there was still a small bit of hope left by the end for Nicole when suddenly Daniels crushes it. With her crushing it, it then makes you look back on the rest of the game as a player and think "oh no, I've been crazy this whole time." I want that juicy immersion.
      As for the guilt being present in the sequel, it will still be there 100%. I just wish that the guilt plotline was beginning its exploration in the game where it is actually explored thoroughly. Thats what most of DS2 is about is Isaac's guilt, whereas with the first game, I didn't get the feeling that was the case. To me, the guilt plotline in the remake kind of felt tacked on at the last minute. It feels a little disjointed to me but that may just be a me problem. Maybe I'm a goober. :P
      I think a the perfect version of this storyline exists in the middle of what the remake did and what the original did. I can totally see where you are coming from and I definitely could have worded things better in my essay but I am also appreciating this discussion. :) Also I am super new at this video essay thing, I appreciate the notes.
      Cheers!

    3:18 inaccurate representation of the storyline. Earthgov sent her to bury the Marker and prevent further disaster after CEC broke the containment measures around Eagis VII for an illegal mining operation (actually, no, to retreive the Marker as CEC director Eckhart is a cult leader).

    There is still one plot hole that remains in the remake. Why the fuck didn't Isaak watch the video Nicole send him up until the end? I think he had...issues way before the Marker's influence. I hope they expand on that if they make a DS2 Remake.

    Great video. I definitely loved the first two games of the trilogy, and against most other peoples opinions of the fact that i liked 2 even more then the first, mainly because part 2 has alot more variety in the levels ( the one in a child daycare center was so crazy and messed up) and the amazing unitoligy scenes were just amazingly creepy and atmospheric! Still loved the first game as well and cant wait to play it!

    The dead space remake, despite excessive particle affects, the remake made some amazing changes although some questionable story changes like giving Hammond an obsession of Chen instead of how he was in the OG as well as some weird story beats such as the poison in hydroponics, I can't remember the why in the remake... That aside, I did enjoy how weapon upgrades are handled and I liked how weapons are field pickups so I am not weary of buying them.
    My favorite has to be the change to the firing range on the USS valor.

    Another thing the addition of Elizabeth Cross fixes is her and Jacob's presence in the original game. Elizabeth and Jacob were meant to serve as parallels to Nicole and Isaac with their roles as crewmen, their search for their lost significant other, and where they travel throughout the ship looking for each other. The main big issue is that both are captured and executed by Mercer in the original with almost no fanfare. I didn't even notice Elizabeth's corpse the first time around. Being able to interface with the locked door in the mining section aside (I'm pretty sure the fact the door was locked could be explained away anyways as it being hallucinated), when both leave the Ishimura believing they're in the comfort of the other's counterpart, it really does increase that impact significantly by the story's end.

    • @thefantasticfiend

    • @isaacfaith9369

      I vehemently disagree. I think the twist is downright stupid and undermines all characters involved. Elizabeth and Jacob were not main characters. They were crewmen on that ship, and they died on that ship. In the original game it’s sad to think they survived so long looking for each other only to die helplessly against a crazed lunatic. The best part? You get to dismember and crush said lunatic’s corpse in revenge.

      Isaac was 41 in the original and Nicole 39. But yeah it doesn't make sense as it seems like his parents were alive and well until recently. Which leads to me thinking that the 40's are the new 30's in the time the game is set in. As it's like 400 years after us. And I think Nicole doesn't look like that because of her age,she might just be ugly.

    I kinda wonder if the whole side quest about Nicole comes from the team not knowing whether the remake would be successful enough to get a remake of 2 going, so they went with that to get a little more plot stuff in? And you're not the only one pissed about EA forcing studios to make games that didn't sell well then closing them for the games they micromanaged to death not selling. First of all this remake is not done right the scary part is the horror field parts, and the fact that Isaac Clark’s helmet does not do the thing in the first game along with several independent changes, such as the whole thing with the very, very not expensive stock FX explosion which sucks on top of the fact that the character now looks like an actor and that just makes it worse when in reality the way, the original characters name was much better than the remake

    This was not a remake done right lmao just because it got a graphics facelift doesnt mean its the best thing ever lol, they literally downgraded the animations of all the necromorphs getting rid of the primal unpredictable behavior and replacing it with a boring generic slow walk, then they made isaccs face and voice important even though it didnt need to be shown at all, they made nicole ugly and old (she looked better in the original games) they made the other chick ugly but also gave her a forced lesbo line because gotta meet diversity quotas plus added in forced diversity crap by changing the posters and adding in a random black girl into the group who stays at the ship to have their little strong wahmen moment instead of having isacc run out of the exploding ship himself lol the comms screens were also downgraded as in the original they looked more realistic whereas in the remake they are just plain screens with robotic stiff facial animations from the actors. If you actually played these games back to back you would notice so many obvious downgrades over the original especially in the horror aspect where in the remake they added so many comical modern horror music stinger jumpscares also I forgot to mention the audio design is crap a great example of this is at the beginning when isacc is behind the glass when everyone is getting attacked.
