So the worst thing about Unitology is that Altman wasn't intentionally a prophet. Dead Space had a tie-in novel about Micheal Altman, an archeologist on earth examining the crater in the Yucatan peninsula and finding death and horror. He tried warning people about the Necromorphs, the government covered it up and people misunderstood his dying warnings as a religious prophecy, and people kept the "joke" going after they find out the truth of the matter because it's so profitable and they bought into the lies
Interesting and pretty cool. I doubt I'll read the books as my reading list is already astronomically long but it's interesting to know there was more to him than is portrayed in the games.
There are just two things that I feel Motive missed the point. 1. The main menu. Original main menu was terrifying, the bloody EA logo, that starting machine sound, all the gore images in the back, felt like a snuff film. Here is just a black screen and that's it, no sound at all. 2. Necromorph sounds. Here sounds "diluted" compared to the original.
The menu of the remake is an interesting case. It seems to be designed for practicality above all else. When you boot up the game, the title intro seems to function as a loading screen for the game to fetch all the assets, then once it's finished, you see the menu that is already on top of the pre-rendered game world. So, at that point, you're literally a click away from playing the game. This is in stark contrast to most games, where the loading of the game world happens AFTER you click play, so you have to wait. Dead Space Remake wastes no time in letting you jump back into the game. I honestly find this kinda of a cool feature, which makes me think that the developers really care about the game in their own way. But as you said, the focus on practicality does lose points in style, as the menu of the original game was full of character that did a good job in setting the tone and anticipation of what's about to come. Also, fun fact - did you know that in the original game's menu, the speed in which you navigate between menu options dynamically increases the tension of the menu's ambient music?
@@simonaspalovis1204 absolutely yes! Just a click in continue and you are in. Adding to that, in consoles (I don't know if this happens on pc) is a resume game option. That feature + the menu desing makes the waiting time between launching the game and playing almost nonexistent. That's cool. About the last fact, I did know that, so much detail in just one menu. I remember they even included some ishimura's art in the options.

Nice assement sir and i sub to that facts. I had the same impression in the OG game. Its was too "much go here and do that .oh go there and do this" with no input from him🤷🏾♂️
I still find the original better. "Handsome looking woman"... They made Nicole look like a 50 yo chain smoker that's overworked. The thing is, they used the same actress that played her in DS2, forgetting that a lot of time has passed since DS2, and they made her significantly less attractive. According to DS Downfall (movie prequel to the first game), Nicole's quite young, definitely younger than the main character of the movie, Alissa Vincent, who's likely around 35. In DS Downfall, When Alissa speaks to the "unnamed" female scientist, she asks her if she has a boyfriend. That question would be pointless (would be much more appropriate to ask about a family) , unless it would be used to hint at Isaac, who coincidentally was on his way to attend to the distress call. Then, EA went and said that it's not her in DS Downfall (even though it is clearly her), in the DS Extraction game, and subsequent media. Funny thing is, she looks even younger in the DS Extraction game. One other big issue is the fact that they expanded too much on the Unitology aspect, compared to the original. Unitology was better explored during DS2, as the fist game was just this mysterious infection on a ship, with one or two hints. That's why they had Downfall ro explain what happened on the ship.
Great video! I've never seen your channel before but clicked because I'm a longtime Dead Space fan and want to hear new fans' reactions. I'd definitely recommend checking out The Callisto Protocol. I don't think I've ever had such a love-hate relationship with a game before. Overall, to me, it's fine. There's aspects I adore and aspects I despise, making the overall game feel like wasted potential. There's tons to analyse there, as well as the insane production history, that I think would be great for you to dig your teeth into. And I appreciate the way you approached the Nicole face model stuff in this video. It drives me nuts that people are mad over a woman in her mid 40s looking like a woman in her mid 40s.
Thanks. I'm very interested in Callisto now so I'll probably pick it up on sale this year. It certainly doesn't look like a bad game, which gets me even more curious. The Nicole thing was mostly just for laughs. Ya know me acting all high and mighty and it turns out I'm just into older women (or women my age as the case would be) but I'm seeing a lot more of this floating around Twitter and it really makes me cringe which is why I kept it in. It's a good remake but honestly? If I ever replay the series I'm probably going to stick with the original release version. There's JUST ABOUT enough "adjusted for modern audiences" stink to the 2023 version to make me go "oh yeah, this was made in 2023" every couple of minutes.
Your first elder scrolls is always your best. I think that applies to how most of us fall on love with certain games. I'm looking forward to when I can have a full conversation with some young uns about ff7 remake, when it's all finished and such.
Overall good video, I wouldn't say I like one Nicole over another aesthetically. But remake Nicole makes more sense as a peer in age to Issac and a woman in a senior position in a hard labor job. I didn't play Dead Space until about 2020 so I have no real nostalgia for it, the only things I really prefer from the original are the sounds and behaviors of the Slashers. They would bellow and charge you as soon as the saw you, often lunging. Also remake Kyne was a complete downgrade, he sounded too reliable and nice
It was more of a bit than anything else. Like I'm trying to put forward a reasonable argument for this Nicole over the og but it turns out I just want to bang her more. But I agree with you. I didn't realize how old Isaac was until thesummerofmark pointed it out to me.
I think one important note to make about Schofield is that while he might've helmed Crystal Dynamics, it was Amy Hennig who helmed the story. Dead Space 2008's story was written by a combo of Warren Ellis, Rick Remender and Antony Johnston. Schofield might've been the one to run the companies at the time and get the games off the ground, but there were others that did a lot of the heavy lifting too. Not trying to be combative here. Just think that a lot of praise is given to figures like Schofield when the bulk of the effort oftentimes goes unnoticed. Also, having watched more of the vid, Altman actually wasn't a fanatic, but that only popped up in the Dead Space novels. He actually wanted to expose the truth of the Unitology movement, but others with vested interests had him killed via necromorph while they more or less, danced on his corpse.
I guess after spending all that time talking about Amy Hennig in my Soul Reaver videos I didn't feel the need to bring her up in this video where she isn't relevant to the conversation.
You just had to go and say people "lack the brains to understand art direction" for not enjoying how they turned a 19-year-old looking cute Nicole into a 65-year-old hag. Your business argument is also wrong, first of all, even though the publishers care only about money, the developers are humans and inject what they want into the art they create. And besides, there are companies that absolutely gone insane and don't chase profit anymore but rather a certain agenda. I don't think the case of Nicole fits that this time, because they just used the face of her mocap actress, but in a different circumstance with a similar outcome it absolutely could've been about that! If you'd rather deny reality and call other people names for openly disliking something, suit yourself.
@@vivusbrydyr4039 deny reality? Bro you're the one making absurd claims. But sure just show me proof. Show me the agenda, show me the meeting notes and emails that prove this was some attempt to sabotage their creation. Presumably if you're this upset about it then you have evidence right?
@@arkham666 i said i don't think the Nicole case in particular is part of the agenda. but the sjw and political messaging is prevalent in modern AAA industry, and they do it even as it hurts them financially. EA, Ubisoft, Sony, they all just love to do some virtue signaling by forcing shallow diversity. what proof to you want me to give? if you don't notice examples of it in most major game releases of the last few years, then it's a case of "where's the ocean, daddy?", the anecdote.
@@arkham666I mean they purposely changed the restrooms using a progressive mindset when the original had male and female separate restrooms. Like it or not most English speakers do not agree with unisex restrooms - especially women - so that does imply some political motivation. The designers clearly were thinking about politics if they changed something so miniscule. They cared enough to change it. Why shouldn't the players care in the opposite direction? Does this prove her design was motivated by said politics? No. People are on high alert because of the obnoxious consultants and these alterations, though. I think people have the right to be bothered by activism in IPs that really shouldn't have it. I wouldn't want Pokémon dripping in conservative politics and I expect the same from the left. One way gaming can become less divisive is not hiring these consultants like was the norm from the 70s up through the 7th console generation. That will calm down all sides. I hated this remake so much just because of the sound design. There is ALWAYS some noise, noise that is purposefully made to make the player believe that there is a monster in the room. As a result, you cannot rely at all on your ears. 10% of my time was spent looking at nothingness, checking if an enemy was there or the sound effects were being annoying. Probably 30% of my health went into enemies I had no idea were in the room with me (because you do get used to the constant noise). It completely ruined the game for me. After a while, each time a sound was playing, I started b!tching. I probably used more insults towards devs than ammo ^-^ Didn't finish it, shipped the game to a friend. I'm the kind of person who literally don't care about sound design, music, dialogs etc. I skip them all, the first thing I do when I start a new game is to completely mute the music in 90% of games, even before knowing how it sounds. I'm here for the gameplay, most other things are unnecessary fluff to me. If someone like me noticed and was annoyed by your sound design, it means you fµcked up badly, honestly. Having fake sounds in a game in such a large amount, it's like playing a FIFA game where some footballers on the field aren't real. Or a FPS not showing you which weapon you're currently holding. Or those racing games that don't sign-post wrong ways enough. Or stealth games with no feedback on enemy perception. The audio design handicapped me severely all throughout my playthrough to the point where I could not enjoy the game at all. Hopefully, this comment won't destroy someone else's enjoyment of the game for their next playthrough. If you didn't notice and it doesn't bother you, try to keep it that way. If you start to notice, this game will become unbearable.
I'm not sure what to say to any of this. I'm sorry I guess. My experience was nothing like that at all. In fact the audio queues were a huge part of how I knew what was going on. Still some things just don't click with some people. The good news is you still have the original and countless other games to play.

Thanks for commenting, glad you enjoyed the video.
Radicooool!
That give me serious TMNT vibes.
@@arkham666 Cowabun...ga? Look idk man I'm not hip with the kids
@@arkham666For me it wasn't. I played Skyrim as my first elder scrolls but I didn't particularly like it. I much prefer Morrowind and Oblivion.
@@ironindustries9258 that just means you have impeccable taste.
@@arkham666 all good. Hennig was only tangential to the point. It’s why I brought up the writers of the original dead space too.
We don't need companies hiring people complaining about men or Japanese culture or beauty standards.
The review was good... until you went head first into politics like ffs why do you guys do that? Review the game and leave outside shiii out of it tf? Almost subscribed at the end because the review was really good but then you had me gag when you brought up the stupid Twitter crap, idgaf what anyone's politics are but please leave it alone literally kills the mood.
@@frankharper3512 I mean it was just bit implying I'm into mature women but maybe we're just not meant to be. Glad you enjoyed the rest of the video though.
I love how Arham666 had to mention "religion is bad" multiple times, then went on to defend the current trending religion of "woke" without being able to understand anything about the ideology. Typical sheeple...
@@Elwood128 the religion of woke. Absolutely adorable. Also I mentioned that the Unitology religion is bad because it operates like a cult. You're so dragged around by your anti woke grifter overlords that you see your imagined enemy everywhere you look. Typical sheeple..
I dont think nicole bieng Dead was supposed to be a twist per se. I think it was more intended as a dramatic reveal. The creators intentionally made her very creepy, so you would think whats wrong with her opposed to her actually well being.
