An amazing video from a criminally underappreciated creator! I'm so glad I decided to watch this, as I too love the hopeless, yet epic feeling of Lovecraftian horror. I loved Dredge as well, it was refreshing to see a game present itself as Lovecraftian by doing more than putting large, scary aquatic beings in the environment. Great video, 10/10
Thank you so much, I appreciate that a lot! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. :) Dredge was truly amazing, I didn't think such a simple game could make me feel so many things.
Great video! I really liked your take on how a good Lovecraftian video game still provides the player agency but not control. That's a really good summation of what the main issue is with Lovecraftian games.
Awesome video and pins down exactly how difficult it is to make a lovecraftian game :) I really would like a more detective focussed game at some point for CoC, but let's wait and see!
Hey, great video you got here! Top notch editing too. Hopefully your videos hit the youtube algorithm and you receive more views, because you deserve them. I totally agree with your perspective on Dredge--how the game gives you just the right amount of powers for the game to still remain scary, but you have the agency to deal with the threat and you don't feel totally helpless, so the gameplay feels engaging as a result.
So, I can't really take "cosmic horror" seriously anymore. I came to this not through any of the games but through reading Lovecraft's stories and watching movies. It seemed so strange to me that people would see stuff and just go crazy. That quote about the straining sciences leading to a new dark age just seemed asinine to me. I was a fan of the Ghostbusters long before I found Lovecraft's stories and while I enjoyed the aesthetics and atmosphere.... I couldn't help but to question the very premise of this so called cosmic horror. Like in Dredge, you can't kill any of the monsters, not because it's impossible.... but because the game doesn't let you. When the protagonist has an obvious answer to their problems and they don't take it, you kind of need a good reason for them not to do so, and most of the stories I read, or movies I watched just didn't bother. Later I discovered Lovecraft's extreme racism and it all fell into place. "Cosmic Horror" is looking through the eyes of someone who sees mixed race people as monstrous abominations. Looking through the eyes of someone who cracks at the first sign that maybe they aren't the centre of the universe. Think about that sad little man who freaked out about Pronouns in Starfield. Lovecraft reportedly would freak out if he saw a black man freely walking the streets unaccosted. Even in Dagon's story, the navy comes in and destroys the town. If I'm remembering correctly the protagonist talks about depth charges being dropped into the sea. The protagonist feels the call of the sea but we never get to see if there is actually anyone down there for him to find. So when in Dark Corners of the Earth you blast Dagon in his big stupid face.... it was glorious. I want MORE games to take the Ghostbusters approach to cosmic horrors, or perhaps Ash vs The Evil Dead? Just my Opinion.
I don't play any Dark Souls games, but isn't it Dark Souls II that is in this theme? I remember in that central square, that tucked between the buildings are these huge, Lovecraftian monsters that are looking down upon all of the horrors. They appear to be simply observing, almost hidden in the shadows, and even larger than the buildings that they stand between, but they are not concerned with the hoards of enemies trying to kill you. Am I remembering this correctly? I watched a video about the game, maybe it's a different Souls game. But it's not my style of game, so someone will know better than me. But I definitely remember loving the art direction, and recognizing the Lovecraft influence, even though I wasn't interested in the actual gameplay. But what a cool environment, with the weight of these dark and oppressive horrors pressing down on you in every direction. It looked very Lovecraftian to me...
Bloodborne is the mega-Lovecraftian Soulsborne game but the rest have cosmic horror themes in them. :) I might make a video on them in the future but Dark Souls II is my least favourite of the bunch, unfortunately. It doesn't entrance me like the 1st and 3rd.
Unfortunately, no. :( I had some strict guidelines when picking what games to chat about for this video. But I just started playing through Cult of the Lamb and having a blast so I might make video on Cult Sims in the future.
very evil man this is why i don't support anything that has to do with him good video though sorry you picked such an evil man to do it on whats next ?

Thanks man :)
What is your favorite game with Lovecraftian themes? Have you played any of the games listed in this video? Let me know!

I appreciate that so much! The more I think about Dredge the more I love it.

I would like to add sunken city, both darkest dungeon games, and dead space to the list of good to great lovecraftian games

You should try out Sunless Sea as well.
Tell us you're going to do a vid on world of horror because that's a high end lovecraftian game if there ever was one.
W Vid
Glad you enjoyed the video!
