    Fun fact, the deep lore of the origin of the church suggests that Altman (or however you spell his name) found out how bad the marker was when he discovered the black marker on earth at the bottom of the ocean, and he died to make sure the government couldn’t use it for their own nefarious purposes. Of course, a coverup came and the church sprung up around it all

    • @TheAngryXenite
      @TheAngryXenite 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@LucasRogers92 I think it's a case of "only humans appear to even be capable of advanced moral reasoning, meaning we don't judge every other organism in existence when they do horrendous shit because only humans know any better." Humans are on the whole one of the overall *least* cruel, most empathetic species on earth, purely because we are cognitively developed enough to even ask these questions to begin with and quite often take efforts to limit our worst excesses. Do you think a tiger or a hippo cares one bit about minimizing suffering of the creatures it kills? Do you think any other species that was intelligent enough to replace us would do better? The closest contenders, such as dolphins or chimpanzees, are if anything even more depraved than we are. Nature is brutal and cruel and you must be even more brutal and cruel to survive in it, and all of human civilization is learning how to respond to the fact that we're slowly removing the binds of nature and must change to reflect that.

    I always interpreted Unitology as a direct result of the influence the markers put out, not as a baseless human religion that just happened to be somewhat right.
    In my view the events in Dead space were set in motion the moment the first marker was activated and humanity was steered towards this eventual goal. So the Unitologists aren't remarkably stupid, some people are just remarkably resistant to the marker's power.

    • @jimjamauto
      @jimjamauto 2 ปีที่แล้ว +72

      Yeah the Black Markers are basically instructions for a race of sentient beings to worship it and build more to achieve convergence. The aliens on Tau Volantis fell for the same trick. Markers have powerful properties but are scientifically inexplicable, so any race that discovers them has no option but to think of them as divine.

    • @blubberfeet5430

      Hey dude. Yes it's all the marker and brethren moons. See the black marker landed on earth 65 million years ago killing the dinosaurs. As it slept it discovered apes and sent signals making us what we are now. They influenced our species to be the top instead of say the mastodons.
      The reason the cultists are like this is again the markers. They are causing Civil unrest to make more corpses making more necros and soon more moons. They've done this to every species in the galaxy making it a dead space and we perhaps are the last species.

      That’s literally the lore reason for it. The Marker signal is what induces evolution of a species so that they grow, overpopulate, and turn to the Markers for a source of limitless energy. A lot of this is conveyed by the Artifacts in Dead Space 3 (an admittedly poor method of giving information), but it’s a cycle of the Moons creating advanced life and effectively growing their own food.

    Honestly the only smart faction in Dead Space was SCAF they made sure anything marker related was so far removed from civilized space that when what would become Earth Gov won the Succession war they tried to destroy all assets so they had little to no information on markers, their test locations, and other top secret stuff with Dead Space 3 showing how far they went to cover this up as well as the book Catalyst.

    • @nihilityjoey
      @nihilityjoey 2 ปีที่แล้ว +45

      The thing is though, it wasnt just SCAF. Earth Gov and SCAF were about AT THE SAME TIME, (as is evident by an earth Gov ambassador visiting vendouga). Dredger Corp was conducting experiments using both sides, not to mention earth Gov was still the "ruling body". It was dredger corp who had the complex put on aspera set up next to the penal colony (which SCAF had a hand in), which is how SCAF got involved. It's some time after that SCAF forces and earth Gov had the war. And whilest the animosity had been building for a while between the colonies and SCAF the war would have also had something to do with the marker research, which earth Gov and dredger corp continued after the war. The sites were scuttled because SCAF was losing the war, and they didn't want earth Gov to get a hold of the research THEY had done. Yes things at the sites were going bad, but that wasnt the only reason they were destroyed, they didnt just do it out of noble reasoning. Dredger corp had set up the perfect cover with the church of unitology to be able to work wherever they chose, and it gave their higher ups the ability to pick and chose who was on the projects, because you could be earth Gov or SCAF and be a unitologist.

    • @nihilityjoey
      @nihilityjoey 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      No. Most members of unitology know nothing of real markers or events. The formal religion of unitology was created by dredger corp - marcov and his team from the black marker test site. Now whether they believed the marker was devine is not made clear, but what is, is altmans suspicions before he died that they were doing it to gain power and a means to continue the research. So they set up lies about Altman and the marker, had those that were present lie and go along with the story. And what better way to gain money, power and influence than to set up a religion. You have donors etc. But out of all of the practitioners only those with access to sites and research and those higher ups at dredger corp know anything of the real markers and their effects. This is why the outbreak on titan station happened so fast. All of those believers experiencing first hand the markers effects and believing their religious teachings. By three marker research was openly seen, and unitology itself had become ever more prevent and even though unitologists were a part of dredger corp and earth Gov, a division happened, those that saw the testing on the recombinant and markers as heresy, and that the markers plan was being subverted. And earth Gov and dredger corp trying to mess with the recombinant and marker as a means to control necromorphs and live through an outbreak as immortals.

Considering the nigh-inexhaustible amount of resources in just a freaking asteroid, there is no logical reason why an FTL capable civilization should or even could have resource problems.
      If the writers are getting fundamentals that basic wrong, it's generally a bad sign... You can't have interstellar travel and resource shortages, it doesn't make sense and moreso just demonstrates that the writer doesn't actually understand the scale of space, or more likely, just doesn't care and is doing it to benefit the story.

      His Facts speech lives rent free in my head, because its such good characterization/explanation of his character. He lists a bunch of objective facts about the Markers and how they affect human life. Facts that can be understandably interpreted in two specific ways.
      There's Danik's way; that the Markers are evidence of a greater power than humanity in the wider cosmos, and that we are meant to be used as a part of something beyond our understanding, by the transformative tool of this greater power that built this actually species-altering artifact. The Markers are not quite necessarily divine, but they are undeniably evidence of alien life far in advance of humanity, and its better for us to accept whatever that older, more powerful life clearly intends for us than to resist it.
      Then there's the way Isaac, Carver, and Eli interpret these facts: that the Markers are evidence/relics of some greater alien intelligence that is CLEARLY hostile and does not have humanity's best interests in mind, so resisting and destroying their tools and servants is the only logical course of action.
      Danik explains his reasoning so perfectly that his conclusions and beliefs seem reasonable until you remember that he's violently advocating for species-wide space zombification, and that he can make that seem even briefly reasonable is a triumph of villain characterization imo.

    Step 3: Marker lands on planets and sometimes kill everything from the impact alone (lol oops)

    Step 5: Once species is smart enough for space travel, make them crazy enough to kill each other around Marker to create vessels for Convergence
    Step 6: While making signals that can create illusions that can drive people insane but can also give people illusions that want to destroy the Marker (Oh wait, that's counterproductive isn't it?)
    Step 7: Make the Marker able to scan how much life around it to ensure it has what it needs to begin Convergence. But still send out a signal 24/7 regardless of how much organic life is around so it will attempt to make a Brother Moon with the combined mass of a few thousand ship mates instead of billions, and wound up creating a giant murder noodle instead of an intelligent moon.
    Step 8: Make sure that the new Moon will make up the combined intelligence of the dominant race while also being made up of multiple animal based lifeforms that could also corrupt the new Moon's GPA.
    Step 9: Manage to create another giant floating meatball so you don't feel like the only floating meatball in the universe that ultimately isn't as smart as you because its makeup is much more corrupt than yours and the alien species didn't have enough time to get as smart as yours.
    Step 10: Forget Convergence all together and just eat lifeforms on whatever planet you come across because creating giant sentient meatballs is just too much work.

Supposedly incredibly intelligent AI that was convinced that an all consuming life form that’s whole goal was to keep infecting and eating until nothing left was the next step in galactic evolution. They even admitted they fucked up later on, admittedly after getting it’s ass kicked by an “inferior” AI.

      @carloszestyboy2901 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Mendicant Bias didn’t initially believe that the flood was the final step in evolution. It was infected with the logic plague by the primordial and had its intelligence overwhelmed by something that has billions of years of cosmic knowledge. The flood are theorized to be every bit as much a physical embodiment of the living universe as the precursors themselves and given that they can infect the fabric of space-time itself, I don’t think twisting the thought process of an AI even as powerful as MB is out of the realm of possibility at all. Also, Offensive Bias was only marginally less in creativity and independence than Mendicant Bias, still being a contender-class AI. OB was also specifically designed to be far more methodical than MB and was created for the sole purpose of countering MB’s rampancy so it makes perfect sense that it was able to delay it.

Everything that humanity is in it, and everything that exists because of humanity, ships, colonies, organizations, are the results of the Black Marker's influence. Had it not been the Church of Unitology, it would have been some other organization that would bring about humanity's end, even if they would have been more efficient at it than Unitologists were. Everything went according to plan on the Black Marker's end, no matter how stupid everything that happened could have seemed.

    Gotta give you mad props for a Sealab 2021 reference. If I were to interpret what these "Markers" are, I'd say they seem to look like a Von Neuman machine crossed with the "gray goo scenario." Both are usually related to nanotechnology, the VN machine simply is a machine that makes copies of itself using local resources to spread itself around, and in the gray goo scenario those machines consume all available resources until they cover the entire surface of a planet, eventually they can even consume the entire mass of a planet.
    I never played these games or watched a series based on them, but I'm curious, did anyone think to try and reprogram the Marker? I mean, if the Marker is able to alter an organism's behavior and biology, if you could figure out how its operating system works you could in theory use it to make yourself immortal, gain superhuman abilities, even alter your body almost any way you want right? Instead of becoming a zombie with knives for hands what if you became an immortal supermodel with wings or something?

    • @richardarriaga6271

      In the first one, scientists reprogram the marker, but they aren't around to share their knowledge. When Isaac tries to destroy it by crashing a ship in to it, it winds up going back to its old behavior per the animation shorts. He learns in the second game you need a shockpoint detonation to destroy them (like a warp-core breach for their universe).

    I've proposed it before and I'll do it again
    The Fire Nation/Fire Lord Ozai
    -Giant useless engineering projects:
    --a drill against *earthbenders*, all they have to do is dig trenches around it and itll get stuck, or wall up after it tunnels past
    --balloons that go pop
    --giant zeppelins that move 1 mile a year
    -Instead of waiting to launch a coordinated strike on the Water Tribes, Ba Sing Se, and Omashu on Sozin's Comet (which is a massive bonus to firebending), they attack in piecemeal
    -Ozai starts his torching campaign in the far northwest, which is in the Colonies. He could've had a staging ground near Ba Sing Se. Or anywhere else.
    -The Fire Nation's possession of cannons. They could field hand-cannons in all their armies and absolutely negate any bending maluses (nighttime, winter conditions, eclipses), in addition to one-shotting enemy master benders. No longer would bending mastery be needed.
    -They seem to have the technology for an air force (Korra's weird mashup of techs don't count). This would give them absolute superiority in all engagements.
    -Then there's the whole "can't kill the Avatar" even though, if they do, at best the Avatar is a threat in ten years' time (the Comet meanwhile comes in a few months)
    I haven't even gotten to Ozai's character or his plan. Needless to say the man would give any Villains on this list a run for his money.

      See, that one makes sense to me. It'd make the top leadership lose a big chunk of their power, so I actually understand why they'd avoid any kind of man portable cannon type weapon.
      Not that it wouldn't eventually come anyway, just I can see why they're doing it.

    • @MrNickPresley
      @MrNickPresley 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Don’t think of this as a call out. This is merely a counterpoint to your arguments.
      - Ba Sing Se was compromised from within, meaning they couldn’t mount a defense against the giant drill fast enough. The point about its design flaws stands, however.
      -No one else has balloons and zeppelins, and both the airbenders and sky bison are gone. That’s aerial superiority, even if it takes forever to deploy them.
      - The sheer logistics of launching a global offensive prior to Sozin’s comet would take an astronomical amount of resources and man power- which the taking of other objectives prior will help with.
      - You have a point here. The man was power tripping pretty hard, and made a big tactical blunder. Should have started on population centers.
      - Another tactical blunder perhaps. Canons would’ve made a smart addition to their roster. It’s made somewhat excusable by their natural ability to throw fireballs and lightning- which only shorts out once every century or so.
      - They make decent use of their vehicles. They have an entire fleet of zeppelins that they use to basically glass a huge stretch of land (could’ve been the city they were trying to conquer, but oh well). They could have used it more, but I guess ground troops were easier to deploy?
      - That’s probably the most sensible solution to the Avatar problem, honestly. Not sure why they didn’t just do that.
      But the avatar wasn’t acting alone, and it’s possible they still could have fallen in that time.

    The Unitologists did way worse that cause the extinction of humanity - they cause the extinction of life as a whole. Like, the title of the series hints at the fact that any life that might have existed is already dead; destroyed by the Brethren Moons already but if any species had managed to survive until now or was outside of the reach of the network the Unitologists deactivating the machine and reconnecting the network would've doomed them all as well.

    I'm fairly certain the games imply that the Markers affect sentient brains to put them under control of Marker influence. The Unitologists weren't just guessing and got lucky, the black Marker put images of itself in peoples heads basically as a way of saying "Hey, keep an eye out for me, because if you find me something REALLY good will happen!"
    At least that's what I pieced together from the two games I half played.
    Dead Space is too scary for me.

      Unitologists know what the marker looks like because it was discovered on Earth, with the govt. trying to cover it up, and Altman trying to expose the marker as bad news bears (which would get misconstrued by Unitology due to the cover up).
      There's some of it hinted in the games, but the book Dead Space: Martyr is the explicit story of Michael Altman and the discovery of the marker.

    Dead Space involves the Fermi paradox, which could be seen to mean humans are ultimately too stupid to win.
