  • Nine Inch Circulars what are the good for? A challenge in knitting is working small circumferences. Some people love 9 inch circulars, some people loath them. I’m testing them out to see if this is THE one needle set up to rule them all. (*Indicates an affiliate link. I like the 9” for color work socks. My consistency is better, floats are better and there is almost zero needle management. Magic loop and DPNs cause me to have ladders if I don’t control the needles.

    I have the red chiagoo shortie set and love them

    I love them for stockinette stitch socks. They're great for that and I find the tension is tighter. Great for negative ease! Bit tricky when it comes to the toe shaping so I swap to another needle set.

      Good to know as I’m knitting socks now

    I go back and forth on the shorties. I fairisle colorwork and with magic loop it is more difficult to do. I knit hats on circulars 16" and love doing the colorwork and not incorporating magicloop. I do not know if the small circumance would be the issue form me. I know I rather do hats on something smaller than a 16".

    I like them for one very specific case. The body of stockinette socks. I knit the toe, heel, and ribbing magic loop. I love them for knit stitch, but even just purling on them makes my wrist angry. So, I use the 9" as a stitch holder for the heel and use my long needle to work the heel, or entirely switch to magic loop at the toe and cuff. But for stockinette tubes, they're my favorite meeting knitting.

      Yes I totally see the appeal for rounds and rounds of knit stitches. Personally I’m good with them for purls. What I want to try is two 10 inch circulars for knitting fingers on glove with two Circs. I normally use two 16 inch but I think going even shorter would be amazing.

    My 9 inch circulars arrived last week. I saw someone using them on-line, I normally do a toe-up sock using magic loop so wanted to see if this was any better. Next time when I do sock No. 2 I will not do the toe increasing using these as it was a bit difficult, but doing the stockinette part is very easy with the 9".

      @CarrieCraftGeek  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, for toe up sock, unless I was using a short row toe I don't think 9 inch circulars would be fantastic. But, tit does seem the overall sentiment is they are best when doing rounds and rounds of stockinette.

    I'd love to hear more about using 2 circulars! I just cast on my first sock (still working the ribbing) and struggling to find a technique I like. DPNs and I are not on speaking terms. Magic Loop is ok if I don't have to use it very long - I find it too fiddly for larger things like a mitt. I tried the 9" circulars, and they're ok, but not really loving them yet. Another video you mentioned 2 circulars so I looked it up, and while I've only done a couple of does that way, I'm thinking that may be the answer for me! I can use the longer needles which are more comfortable, and it's not as fiddly switching between them as magic loop seems to be.

      I am planning on shooting a video on two circulars. It’s my favorite truthfully. I like magic loop okay if I can use a 24 inch which is what I used for the second glove. I find with magic loop the shortest needle I can get away with the better.

    I purchased 9" needles because I couldn't get the hang of using 4 needles to make socks. They kept falling ot of my hands. I've had success with 9" but I still can't figure out heels. 😄 Then I discovered SPIRAL socks. ( I know it's cheating but it works ) I made 5 pair so far now !

    • @CarrieCraftGeek
      @CarrieCraftGeek  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There's no such thing as cheating in knitting. There's only tools in the toolbox. So glad you found a method that works for you!

      I knit socks on the 9 inch and do the fleegle heel, it is so easy on the 9 inch circular needle.
      I decrease the toe till Ihave 18 stitches and then I use the magic loop.

    Some people who have these needles ( I have them, both the red and blue sets ) use 1 of the 2 inch and 1 of the 3 inch needles ( I don't ) it may help with the bind off or cast on.

    • @CarrieCraftGeek

      Great tip. I do think using two needles would help.

  • @nrasjid

    In general I avoid using 9 inches because I need more leverage. I tried on lace and cables pattern and its hard. As you said, too tight. Now I only use 9 inches if I knit colorwork sock projects.

    • @CarrieCraftGeek
      @CarrieCraftGeek  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes! I tried using 9 inch with a German Twist Cable and gave up. They're handy for basic stitch patterns but limited. I do want to try them for stranded color work.

    • @nrasjid

      @@CarrieCraftGeek my colorwork socks are more neat using 9 or 10 inches but tend to be tighter gauge than I normally knit.

    I'm honestly not a fan of 9" circs. I got a pair at a yarn swap a few years ago, and couldn't figure out how to hold them so the back end of the tips didn't rub up against my palms in weird ways. (I think I use what you're calling a knife grip.) Just wasn't comfortable.
    My favorite small circumference method is Magic Loop these days, though I'll happily use DPNs if I don't have the right circs. DPNs were my favorite until I figured out how to avoid laddering in Magic Loop.

    • @CarrieCraftGeek
      @CarrieCraftGeek  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I like the 9 inch circulars more than I thought I would but if someone asked what they should try first for knitting small circumferences I’d recommend other methods first.

  • @rosemariezanfardino3769
    @rosemariezanfardino3769 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I’m wondering if using 2 9” would work instead of DPNs???
    Also, do you think a 10” circular would be better.

    • @CarrieCraftGeek
      @CarrieCraftGeek  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have wondered the same thing! In particular for thumbs. People have told me 10 inch is more comfortable. For me, I’d have to be knitting for someone else. I have tiny wrists.

  • @fish8cat

    Can you lever knit on them or do you need to change the way that you throw your yarn?

    • @CarrieCraftGeek
      @CarrieCraftGeek  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question. I had to switch from a knife grip to an overhand grip. I talk about how I do that in my Lever Knitting Part 2 video.

    • @fish8cat
      @fish8cat ปีที่แล้ว

      It's all your fault! You got me hooked on lever knitting, so I'll do whatever I can to do that little dance. The knife grip no longer works for me -- well it does, but I love the lever style.
      Thank you for teaching it so well!

    Regular t-pins and other keys are too large to fit into the tiny little holes in these needles!

    • @catzkc5488
      @catzkc5488 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      (At least the sock sizes that I have)

    • @CarrieCraftGeek
      @CarrieCraftGeek  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for the heads up. I doubled checked, both regular t-pin and jumbo paper clip do fit. But, I did notice that the 3 inch tip doesn’t have a hole to use two keys like the two inch tips do.
      I think for the three inch tips I’d pull out the rubber grips from my hiya hiyas to get more grip for that final turn.
