    Hello, needle lovers! I have an updated info on Addi Interchangeables. Addi now uses a white brass coating for their hollow brass needles instead of a nickel coating. So, if you have a nickel allergy, Addis may now be a viable option for you! My question: would you like me to do an updated review of Addi needles? Head over to the community tab to take part in the poll!

    Wow I am realizing from this that knitting style is really important to needle preferences. Watching you throw I see why you need slick. Those needles are moving. Being a continental knitter with not much movement I see why I truly adore my Takumis.

    When I started knitting in 2009, there wasn't much available as good needles. I bought the trial set from Knit Picks who also had acrylic circulars back then and it allowed me to try all 3 of their options (nickle, wood and acrylic). Fell in love with the nickle plated ones and got a set plus several more. I was fully equipped from fixed circulars for socks all the way to size 15 when I was gifted a set of Knitter's Pride Royal. I loved those even though they weren't as slick and fast, but it was fine until I started working at a fabric store.
    Well, I'm giving my Knit Picks collection to my daughter who likes to knit too and I'm getting all the sizes I really need in Chiagoo. The cable, the sharpness... This is really something else!

    Grateful for this review! I'd consider myself an adept crocheter, and a novice knitter. Learning to knit on wood needles is nice because the grip makes the awkward stage of learnin what you're doing a lot easier without worrying that your stitches will slip off. The cable has been my biggest hang up in all of this though. Fighting uphill with ur cable as a newbie has been hard and those steel cables look like a great option for me. Thank you!

    Great review! Glad to have found your channel. I have gone through my own journey with finding the right interchangeables for me. I have found that not one set fits the bill perfectly so I have a lot of them, lol. My first set was Knitters Pride Nova Platina. As with all of them, I had used their fixed needles first. I love the slick metal! They are super fast. My only complaint is that some of the tips are just too pointy! I do not like super pointy needles. They hurt me. I’ve noticed that the smaller sizes are pointier. The cables are ok too. I have their Dreamz wood as well but, like you, I love metal. Then I bought my Addi Turbo. I absolutely love these needles! They are such a pleasure to work with and the blunt tip is great! I find when I join the cord to the needle I actually shut my eyes and go by feel. I can feel when they click properly into place. I like the cords but it’s very difficult to get the lifeline into that slit. Next I wanted to try the ChiaoGoo interchangeables. I love these needles too! They are pointier which is great for lace but not so much that they hurt me. And they are nice and light. I bought 2 sets, 4 and 5 inch respectively. The cables really are awesome. Before buying them I wasn’t sure if I should get the Hiya Hiya. But after purchasing 1 fixed circular of the regular Hiya Hiya, not even the sharps, I knew the tip wasn’t going to work for me. It was already too sharp. Lastly, I purchased a fixed Addi Lace needle and found that the tip isn’t that sharp either so they just may be my next purchase! Again, thanks for a great review and I’m glad to hear that you are not numbering your kids in order of preference!😂😂

    I'm a beginner and I don't know what I like right now. I started knitting 2 weeks ago. tried the Clover bamboo needles first. It was easier since they grip yarn so much, it helps when learning the mouvements and how to hold the needles. Then I got the knitter's pride Mindful Collection Gratitude Set which is stainless steel and they are so slippery! I can't use them just yet, I feel like I'm knitting in oil. I think I will try the carbon and birch wooden needle from knit picks next to see which ones I like best. Thank you for this video, it was really helpful. My friend who showed me how to knit also likes very slippery needles for speed.

    I'm a chiaogoo girl all the way. I have both the red lace and bamboo. I discovered that I too only like metal needles. However since the cables from the bamboo fit the metal i use them for magic loop. The coated metal cables, which are fantastic for everything else, not so good for ML. I bought two Signature Arts convertibles (not interchangeable!) and hated them. The stiletto point is great, you just can't get your stitches over the cable assembly. I gave them away, explaining why i hated them, and I still got complaints from one of the women who got a free, expensive needle.

    Now watching this, I’m glad I didn’t get the Addi Clicks…the spring may give my hands issues. Right now I’m using the knitpicks laminated wood needles, I like wood, but bamboo is slower for me then the laminated wood. • @CarrieCraftGeek

    Lykke just came out with copper needles. I wonder if you'd like those. I'm such a wood needle person. I love my knit picks. They're actually some of my faster needles over size 3.😂 (I do use metal for small needles). I'm a loose knitter though, I actually work the stitch before the taper without an issue and the stitches slide off.

  • @SoJustAsk

    Great overview and comparison of the different needles. Knit Picks needles, green cable is much stiffer than the purple or black cable. I like square needles, love Knitters Pride wood cubics, but those I haven't found in an interchangeable option, I also like Knit Picks Four square needles and have a set of those. I just discovered the Knitters Pride Nova Platina square needle, sadly the option I wanted was not in stock, just the short tips which I really do not like. But I did get the size I needed in a fixed cable and am really impressed with them. A lot of reviews say the finish wears off but I would think that with a free replacement policy that would be fairly easily fixed. The Kollage square needles that started that whole square needle deal are horrible. They are not slick at all. Very uncomfortable to knit with and way too expensive. Addinovel or Rocket2 squared needle is a fairly new offering from Addi. It's interesting, very slick but has these little speed bumps on them to assist I guess in keeping the knitting from flying off the needles. I've only seen them in the fixed cable not interchangeable option. But they did have a length I needed for a cowl that I was wanting to knit (that is not available in any other brand, fixed or interchangeable) so I purchased the size I needed in the length I also needed. They aren't bad, just different. After awhile you kind of ignore those bumps. A word about square needles that I have found to be true, you usually have to go up one size to get gauge. I guess that is pretty common. I find them more comfortable to knit with and I too have a lot of different needles. LOL

    • @CarrieCraftGeek
      @CarrieCraftGeek  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have seen that Addi now has square needles in their interchangeable sets. I have not noticed the finish wearing off on my Nova Platina Cubics but I have read that complaint as well.

    • @JennySimon206
      @JennySimon206 ปีที่แล้ว

      So if the finish wears off they replace them? That's my issue. I'm a crocheter and am looking to buy my first set. I don't want a finish to rub off on me. I was thinking just go Chiaogoo because they have so many options. The shorties and minis. Slick sounds nicer tho. I knit continental being a crocheter fyi. I'm not sure if I want slick or not. Think it depends on the yarn. Like going fast. Stainless steel is in between they say. Hmmm...
      Edit: got to the part where she says manufacturers replace them. Good.

    I have the addi Basics and have found that I only have issues with the ridge in them if I am using the 3,5mm needles. And I have to be honest that it really is annoying to use a thin yarn with that size, it catches on every yarn I have ever tried! 4,0 mm and above seems to be fine though! I really love the needles, and got them used so I saved about 40 Euros on the new price, and they were like new!

    • @CarrieCraftGeek
      @CarrieCraftGeek  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I can see how the ridge would be more noticeable on the smaller needles. Admittedly it’s rare I use the smallest needle in the set. I just don’t seem to use the 3.5 mm needle all that often.

    • @pjschmid2251
      @pjschmid2251 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I had an Addi basics interchangeable set. It was the second interchangeable set I ever got and I ended up giving it away. The ridge drove me. Crazy on any size are used. I guess I’m just more sensitive to anything that’s not absolutely smooth on the join. I am now a Chiaogoo fan and I don’t think I’ll ever go back. I have the full set and two sets of minis, and I adore them. The thing about the Chiaogoo connectors is that they’re so consistent in the manufacturing every needle screws in with a perfectly smooth join. I’ve never had a needle that had that little gap in the connection that made a ridge that catches the yarn like you will find with Knitpicks, for example.

    For my birthday? The first set I purchased was the clover Takumi bamboo needles for $100. I really feel like returning them because I don’t see how they could possibly be worth anything close to $100. They came with three or four cords and nothing else but a beautiful black zippered case so if I keep them, it will be because of the nicest securest case but what they charge cannot be justified.

  • @MsJklein
    @MsJklein 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thank you for this great review! I saw you say that the Karbonz short tapers are problematic. I am interested in purchasing them because I knit on the end of the needle and have tension issues with my stitches being too tight. What do you find problematic about the short taper if you don't mind sharing?

    • @CarrieCraftGeek
      @CarrieCraftGeek  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      MsJklein In some ways it’s a personal preference - I generally prefer the longer taper you find with lace needles. I try to work my stitches so the stitch in the left needle is on the tip and I like having a longer point for the stitch to sit on. And a longer taper I think makes it easier to do double decreases or stitch patterns with more complex maneuvers.
      That being said I love my Karbonz. They are my go to for fair isle or if I want a needle with more grip. I’d say if you’re someone who either likes or are not sensitive to a shorter taper you probably won’t notice that characteristic the way I do. But, if you’re like me and lean toward lace needles with sharper tips and longer taper you might take issue.

    • @CarrieCraftGeek
      @CarrieCraftGeek  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Forgot to mention if you’re finding your tension too tight two things to look for: 1) make sure after completing your stitch onto push it down the barrel of the right needle to properly size it. 2) no need to give your yarn any extra tug. Sometimes we have a tendency after forming the stitch to pull at the yarn to tighten the Stitch.not only does the create an unnecessary tighter tension, it puts more strain on the hands. You only need enough tension in the yarn to pull the yarn through the loop.

    • @MsJklein
      @MsJklein 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CarrieCraftGeek thank your for your thoughtful reply! I do try to keep the stitches pushed down on the barrel, but I end up knitting too quickly and neglecting to do that. Im trying to teach an old dog new tricks, but my habits are tough to break :)

    I love the Knit Picks Foursquare Interchangeables. They are more rounded on the square edges than the Knitter's Pride Symfoni Cubics which makes them more comfortable. How comfortable or the Nova Platina Cubics? Have you used the Foursquares for comparison?

      @@CarrieCraftGeek I'm new to knitting. I just started at the beginning of the Stay at Home order. • @CarrieCraftGeek
      @CarrieCraftGeek  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, wood needles are good for beginning because you can keep better control. I also like plastic when first starting because they’re smooth but still have more grip than metal. I discuss it my Knitting Fundamentals Ep 1: Introduction.

    Hello, I really appreciate this great and in-depth review. I would like to ask you for an advice please. I am already an Addi lace Lady I own both the long and the short sets. Although, I would like to try out a gnu brand of lace needles such as the HiyaHiya. Just like you, I like very slick needles, pointy needles and also very smooth such as Addi. So, knowing you both brands, do you think that comparing them I would like HiyaHiya Needles after using my Addis using them for almost a decade now? What are the Smoother of these two brands? Thank you very much I would really appreciate your answer

      HI!. So glad you enjoyed the video. Comparing the Hiya Hiya and Addis, the Hiya Hiyas are smooth, but the Addis are smoother. I like Hiya Hiya has a larger range of needle sizes than Addis. The smallest Addi is a US 4. And the smallest Hiya Hiya is a US 2. Also, the Hiya Hiya is even sharper than the Addi. I actually hurt myself once when I sat on a Hiya Hiya.

      @@CarrieCraftGeek many many thanks for your reply. Yes, HiyaHiya has really a larger number of needle sizes. That is exactly why I wanted to try that brand because they have an absolutely lovely set that is called the sharp deluxe plus set that includes 16 pairs of needle tips as well as seven sizes of cables and many other accessories. I would like to add one more metal sets to my collection that is why I would like to try out the HiyaHiya. On the other hand, now there is also a wonderful collection by kneaders bride that is called the mindful collection I don’t know if you know it or not. Anyway, I just wanted to know the difference between Addi and HiyaHiya. If you had to choose between these two brands, what really would be your favorite? Thank you very much for your help and attention

    I think knit picks and knitters pride are sister company's. They seem to have the same needles. I live in UK and we have knit picks so it may be the same brand for different continents. I personally like the zing set and smart stix.

    • @CarrieCraftGeek
      @CarrieCraftGeek  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think they’re separate companies but Knit Picks sources their needles from the same manufacturer. There are definite similarities between their needles and their cables are known to be compatible. But, Knit Picks cables and needles are not color coded the way Knitters pride. I think Knit Pro and Knitter’s Pride are the same company, however, and use different brand name in different countries.

    • @CarrieCraftGeek
      @CarrieCraftGeek  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh and Knit Picks doesn’t carry all the same needles. They don’t sell square metal needles or Carbon fiber.

    • @cazwaardy6380
      @cazwaardy6380 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup knit pro was the one I should have said. I must have got them mixed up as they all start with knit😄 I'm a relatively new knitter so I get a bit confused on the brand's🤪

    • @CarrieCraftGeek
      @CarrieCraftGeek  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh it’s easy to confuse them all especially with all the KP abbreviated brand names. A lot of Knit Picks branded tools is basically the same as Knitter’s Pride. Although I do think Knit Puck cables are little stiffer than Knit Pro. But, the wood needles are clearly the same manufacturer.

      I was ranking my interchangeable needle sets and since I only have a fixed circular for the Chiagoo didn’t feel I had enough experience with them to rank it. But, I wanted to talk about the Chiagoo on the video since it’s a popular brand and the cable is both unique and very good.

      I wasn’t involved with any affiliate programs when I shot and uploaded this video. And all the sets in are ones I have owned for years before my channel.
      It is true I have since joined some affiliate programs and have links to help support my channel. And I only earn a commission if someone clicks on a link and makes a purchase. But my integrity is incredibly important and I will only recommend products that I believe in. And if I change my mind about a product as I did with the Knit Picks interchangeable crochet hooks I will let people know that.
      I hope you enjoyed this video and got useful information from it.

      I do everything on circulars and I do a lot of magic loop taat socks. I need a cake that has little memory but can almost fold in half. I hope that makes sense. Who's cable would be best for that?

    • @CarrieCraftGeek
      @CarrieCraftGeek  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would say the Chiagoo. That cable is like no other. It has zero memory. You can bend it in half and it won’t permanently kink.

      Hi! Are your knitpicks different to knitter's pride? I can't believe it!?!?! l bought 6 different kinds of kp, and a few aluminium needles. The joints l don't like bse they're eith a ridge, several times! When l put 10 cables 3 of them aren't ok. Can't understand. I thought l could never knit with metall cause of my arthrosis and allergies but with the brand „Chiaogoo red lace“ l had it all! Nearly as sharp as the sharpest brand, hiyahiya, but with longer tapers they are my first goal! I have HiyaHiya as well but after a time l only use my Chiaogoo Red Lace Set. I bought the shorties, too, red and blue and l use the straight needle pieces you can buy from hHiyaHiya to lengthen my needles from time to time up to 5.0 mm (shorties), and adapters, too, and then l can get from 2"needles 3" -, 4"e, 5" - and longer needles! I dont need any different needle - set any more. I hope to sell my Addi lace tip set (3.0mm to 10.0mm, and all 6 sets of knitter's pride 3. mM to 15.0mm. And l don't need my HiyaHiyas any more, although they're fine.

    Interesting that you don't have what I think are sets from the three best interchangeable needle makers - Prym, Chiao Goo and Knitpro. And no steel cables - I won't use anything else.

    • @CarrieCraftGeek
      @CarrieCraftGeek  ปีที่แล้ว

      KnitPro is distributed as Knitter's Pride in the US, so I have two sets of them.
      Prym needles are just starting to show up in the US market and I only see fixed circulars. I have a review of their ergonomic needle in a separate, more recent video.
      Chiagoo I tried their shortie 9 - 12 inch interchangeable and they are very good. I have a video review of those as well.
      The cable is great and the fixed circular I have is one of the few fixed that I reach for regularly. I just haven't been able to justify to myself buying a fifth set of metal interchangeable. Although I'm eyeing their Forte Set. But, oof they're expensive.

    Hi, I enjoyed your review and as an owner of the Addi basic set, I was surprised that you struggled to insert the cable into the needle. There are markings on the cable and on the needle end that you line up, push and turn and the cable and needle are connected. I found a video on TH-cam that has a close up of how to do this which I hope will help you and your viewers - th-cam.com/video/GdC4M9j-foU/w-d-xo.html. Cheers Trish

      Sorry I only just saw your comment. The issue I've had with Addi is just being a bit stiff until the spring gets broken in a little bit and sometimes getting a good grip to turn the needle. But, that's a great tip about the markings on the side of the needle. Thank you!
