My 2011 BMW X5 had the exact same symptoms you described. My mechanic couldn’t diagnose the problem, after several failed attempts to diagnose the problem, he advised me to keep driving the vehicle the way it was with the hope that when the problem gets worse it will be easier to diagnose. After watching your video, I did the transfer case oil change myself and that fixed the problem. Thank you so much for saving me thousands of $$$$ . 👍❤
THAT is EXACTLY what my German auto mechanic said. I've been driving it now for almost a year like this and it is steadily getting a little bit worse (hence me looking for solutions now...) I think i'm going to do the service on the TC and see what happens. I plan on doing it at least two times (drain, fill drive....drain, fill drive and then finally drain fill drive and leave it alone).
Thank you for a great video and an easy to understand explanation. This was like a tutorial in BMW xDrive transfer cases....... "How To Save A Transfer Case for Idiots"...... like me. So I have a 2008 BMW 328xi Sports Wagon 6MT (e91 chassis). It has 131,000 miles. I have owned the car for two and a half years. I purchased it with 86,000 miles. From the day I purchased it, I always noticed the "misfire or chatter while driving or cornering", especially under moderate to heavy acceleration and very slow speed tight turns (like in a turning circle or parking lot). I installed OEM spark plugs and coil packs. Definitely ran a little bit smoother but the feeling of "misfire" was still occurring under certain conditions. I tried lots of different fuel treatments, but it did not remedy the problem of the "misfire". I ultimately got used to the "misfire" and figured out how to drive the car to minimize the feeling of "misfire". Recently, the "misfire" was becoming more severe, and I really had to carefully accelerate in order to minimize the effects of the "misfire". My car was not really feeling like the "Ultimate Driving Machine" and I was very frustrated driving it. Then I came upon your video.......and I fixed my car. I decided to try your idea and change the Transfer Case fluid. I found a great "How To" video facebook.com/watch/?v=1544711118910953 from FCP Euro on how to change the fluid on my specific car. When I drained the fluid from the Transfer case......... SURPRISE, it was probably only half full. I measured about 16 ounces (half a quart) of fluid. Prior to filling the Transfer Case with new fluid, I pumped new OEM BMW DTF 1, Transfer Case fluid (part # 83222409710) into the transfer case with the drain plug off and flushed out the remaining old fluid. I continued to flush the transfer case until the fluid coming out was clear. Then, I installed a new OEM BMW drain plug and I filled the transfer case with the aforementioned BMW fluid. I then installed a new OEM BMW fill cap. While I was under the car, I also changed the oil in the six-speed manual transmission and the front and rear differentials. Time for a road-test. Wow!!!!! No more "misfire" or chatter. I took it out for a "spirited" drive and drove it like the "Ultimate Driving Machine" was intended to be driven. It's a completely different car now. A couple of notes about my car. I have 18 inch OEM BMW style 416 wheels on my car. The wheels are 18" x 8". I run 225/45R18 tires on the front and 255/40R18 tires on the rear. Completely stock, OEM suspension. No rubbing whatsoever and the car rides beautifully. No fault codes of any kind, ever. The bigger wheels and tires give the car an aggressive look, kinda like it is lowered, but it is not. Thank you again for posting your video and sharing your knowledge. I really appreciate it.
I have a 2011 750Li, I’ve been experiencing this “chatter” hesitation for a WHILE! No fault codes come up but so much has been done to the car and I’m still experiencing those symptoms you mentioned. Thank you for this video, I’m hoping I can finally resolve the issue.
My 2016 640i Xdrive I had a horrible shudder on light to full throttle just driving straight at any speeds up to high speeds, tried new plugs and coils idled really smooth, still had same problem. NO fault code zero misfire counts. After watching your Video I decided since I had factory staggered wheel/tire set-up that has rear tires with slightly smaller diameter, rear tires 275/35R20 fronts 245/40R20 .3" diameter difference. I had wondered how the transfer case handled this. It doesn't apparently very well, as the clutches need to slip constantly under load. Great news! I sucked out probably 70% of the fluid and refilled with fresh BMW DTF1 and was pleasantly surprised, immediately my shudder on acceleration was completely gone! I skipped the unplug and drive step as I figured a fluid change was a good idea regardless at 50k miles. I was getting ready to through more parts at it. I will change the fluid 1 more time, after drive 100 miles, may even remove t-case to get all the fluid out as there is not a drain plug. I really thought I had a fuel issue of some kind. So glad I saw this video.
Sounds exactly like what my 2021 Altima is doing.. it’ll vibrate when I’m lightly on the throttle from like 20-60 mph and when I’m turning left at a light it’ll act like it doesn’t want to go and it’ll get hung up then it’ll eventually take off, almost got me killed a couple of times… dealership never could figure it out after bringing it in 4 different times, but it’s still under warranty and they charged me $180 every time I brought it in. I’ll have the transfer case fluid changed and see if it helps
Just want to say thank you for this video! I bought a 2020 X5 a few months ago. I felt the chatter/judder under load only when I would take turns. I feared the worst and have been worried ever since I noticed it. I took my car into bmw for an oil change. As I was waiting for my service guy to come out and check me in. I found your video. I paid them an extra $350 to change my transfer case fluid and reset everything. Car drives perfect! Thank you
OMG... Praise... thank you for this video. I've been told by numerous CarMax service guys that I'm crazy and theres nothing wrong with what I'm feeling. I bought a 2019 X5 2 months ago from them and believe me,. tomorrow I shall be ringing them up as it's still under their warranty. First and last time I buy a car from somewhere other than BMW.
Mainly watched this to see if I would need to remove the mount bracket but your symptoms and info at the beginning was also great to hear. I have a tuned N55 and thought it could possibly be the engine or even the ZF8 on pulls between 3-5k rpm in taller gears. It took a lot of forums and brainstorming to get an idea of what you described in minutes. Great help!
Thank you for this video I’ve been searching for this video as you describe exactly what’s going on with my 04 bmw x3 . Now I know I need to start with the oil change. I replaced the gear’s first and that didn’t fix it next I replaced the whole motor that didn’t fix it. So thank you so much for you help!!!
Thanks for your video, very clear info. I had the same problem on my 2008 X3 E 83. Again I found a solution on TH-cam! I had to remove the transfer case and disassemble it and replace a plastic / fibre reinforced cog , which I purchased for 5$ on ebay. I also changed tje oil in the transfer case and the front and rear diffs. No problems afterwards. I now have an X3 F25 and my local garage has changed all the oils as a precausion.
I have had this issue in the past on our '15 F15 X5, our (3) '07 E83 X3's & '04 Chevy Trailblazer 4x4. ALL were fixed with a fluid change! Usually between 40 & 50 k miles. I will assume, like a limited slip differential, the friction modifier in the fluid degrades & causes the chatter. New fluid replenishes the friction modifiers. The last time I checked with the BMW published service, the E70's & F15's no longer need/call out, the 'reset'. Just R&R and drive. I made a cheaper fluid pump by using a Harbor Freight A/C vacuum pump ($16) hooked up to a compressor, with a qt. jar & clear PVC tubing from Lowes, as the collection container. Works on Transfer case & rear differential.
Thanks for the video. You along with a few others finally led me to the solution to my problem. I've been trying to figure this one out for over a year.
Yes it did. What I found was there was hardly any fluid left in the transfer case! Even if this didn’t fix it I’m glad I checked or else I would have been replacing it, which apparently isn’t cheap. Thanks again.
Exact same symptoms on my 2020 BMW X5 45e. I had a mechanic change the transfer oil as you described ever so well and the fault has cleared. Thank you for such an informative and well presented video... ps I'll be changing this oil as per your recommendation
So I drive the 2016 X5 F15, a couple of months ago while driving up the hill, the vehicle felt as if it skipped a gear for about half a second. It happened again last week on a different hill. Today it happened on a flat road, as I put my foot all the way down as I was in a rush. The vehicle is currently getting checked at the dealership. Hopefully just need the oil change...great video!!!
Perfect explanation. BMW changed the transfer case on my 2014 X50i at 54Kmi on an extended warranty. The symptoms were judder when going up hills at both partial and full throttle.
Had a similar issue. Xfer case blew with a loud metallic bang coming up a hill in Sport mode. After the bang I noted the slip/ stutter mentioned if the vehicle was accelerating under load. BMW diagnosed as transfer case and replaced under warranty.
Very informative regarding the symptoms and diagnosis sections. Have an X3 which I was confident was gearbox slip having encountered it before on the older ZF 6HP box. Was all prepared for doing oil and pan on that but will be looking in to this first. Cant believe that this is the first video I've seen which specifically mentions the similarities to the gearbox slip. I've no fault codes and no other symptoms than the shudder at lower revs in the middle gears. Thanks for the information! 👍
@@AskTheCarExperts Thanks for the feedback. I was waiting to get under the car and disconnect the transfer case motor, but have since identified the correct fuse on my F25 X3. Disconnecting the motor pretty much cured the shuddering, although still a very sllight trace, so I suspect I'm still going to do the gearbox fluid and pan filter service. I have also found a service invoice in the history from the prior owners time that includes doing the transfer case fluid about 12k miles ago. So I think I'll be wasting my money simply doing the fluid again and I have now ordered a clutch pack for the transfer case.
@@AskTheCarExperts Your information in this video also made me scan my girlfriends perfectly driving F25 X3 and I find the transfer case fluid service alert active for her car. Will most certainly be doing this as scheduled maintenance shortly. Thanks again.
Real informative video. I own a 2020 x7 x40i with 72k miles and noticed a shudder when turning. Took it to the dealership for diagnostics and came back needing a new transfer case. Quoted me $8550. They didn’t mention changing the oil. So I’m taking it to an independent bmw shop for a second opinion if changing the oil will help or if I do indeed need a new transfer case.
So I had this issue where it felt like I needed a tune up when I was giving the car light acceleration up to speed. The car would jerk throughout the gears. I could go WOT and it seemed like no issue. Well the jerk started getting worse and I changed the transmission fluid and pan, changed HPFP, changed plugs and wires, changed VANOS solenoids... I changed it all until I ran across the word transfer case while researching. So I purchased a XDelete license and used the app to put the car in RWD mode and the problem immediately went away. I'm hoping just a fluid change can get my AWD back.
@AskTheCarExperts xdelete is a fairly new app that allows you to switch between AWD and RWD. It has been working pretty well for me. I'm definitely going to do the fluid change when I can get hold of the pump you're using lol
Thanks for this video. I have an X7 40i and this issue started by shuddering when accelerating, kind of a loss of power or transmission. So, first I thought it was a fuel issue, then the dealer said it might be the tires (it started after I put on a new set on Pirelli P Zero's). Then I took it again, and they diagnosed the transfer case issue and quoted about EUR 6000 to replace it. They never mentioned changing the fluid, so I think I'll try that first.
Hey Roger first video to pop up on Google when I was trying to confirm my symptoms and next diagnostic steps! I recently started experiencing a shutter under load especially once I get into higher boost (18lbs+) in my e90 335 The car will shutter/buck almost as if it’s a misfire like you mentioned Scanned the car when I got home because xdrive and abs were disabled at about 70mph on the highway plugged it up found 54c6, 55c6, and 55c3. I feel however I’m gonna give the fluid change a shot and reset the maint because my shutter has been very very intermittent.
Hi Chris, If you disconnect the transfer case motor plug see if the symptoms are gone. You may have the N54 on your 335 and carbon buildup on the intake valves can also cause a similar feel. This would be a great way to determine if it is the transfer case.
So I just did this on my X7 and this was really helpful. I only was able to get about half of the amount out. I found it hard to get the tube in to suction it out. My tube was same thickness as yours so not sure why I had a problem. My finger hit metal when I inserted it to see if passage was clear. Seems like there was only an opening to put the tube in down to the right. I had to find a skinny flexible rubber tube half the thickness of a pencil to get it down there. If you can describe the angle you put the hose in that would help. I want to do it again when the new oil is fully mixed with the old. Should that only take a few miles driving to mix? I do already notice an improvement. Less almost no more shuddering on turns so I am hopeful. I also saved $ by using the Triax brand DTF-1 fluid on Amazon for $20 a bottle.
Thank you! I will try this before replacing the entire transfer case. What type of oil is used to flush it? Amd how many times do you recommend it be flushed before thinking... okay i have to replace the transfer case?
@nikeyawashington9948 You would just suction out the old fluid and use the correct transfer case fluid for your vehicle. Your local dealer can check for the fluid you will need. 1 liter should be enough
Hey Roger, unrelated question but I recently got my zf8hp45 rebuilt on my f30 and I’m experiencing harsh shifting from 1-2, 2-1. My fill pressure for clutch c is 750mbar and 998mbar for clutch e and all other ones are 12mbar , 200mbar and -150mbar. During the rebuild all clutches were replaced since clutch pack C, and E were messed up as well as the torque converter. The only thing that wasn’t replaced was the TCM and solenoids but I was also experiencing this harsh shifting before the rebuild, the shop that did the rebuild said that a trans software update will fix the issue but I don’t want to drop 400 dollars for a software update if it won’t fix the issue. Thanks Btw you’re videos have saved be an insane amount of money!!
Hello! Thanks for watching my videos! I have not heard of any software fix for this type of symptoms. I would imagine the transmission shop would have cleared your adaptations in your transmission after the rebuild but you can ask them if they did. I just ran through the BMW service bulletins and there is nothing about this. I suspect the issue is still internal of the transmission. Ask the trans shop to cover the 400 if the issue is still present. Not sure if they will but I think it would be worth it to prove they need to have another look at the trans for free. I hope you can get it resolved! Let me know how you make out.
@@AskTheCarExperts yeah at first I thought they didn’t reset adaptations so I went on Ista and reset them myself but the problem still persist. I will take the car in a couple of days and let them know I’m still experiencing this problem. I will keep you posted.
Uneven tire wear can be a culprit. My BMW transfer case never had a problem in over 120k, done 2 fluid changes in that distance with Red Line MT-LV that is compatible with BMW xDrive transfer cases.
Great video thanks for sharing. My 2011 F25 has a weird feeling when turning left out right at very low speeds. This haired after replacing the upper control arms, ball joints, and front brakes. Also replaced the drivers side cv axle after this happened-no change. Will now change transfer and diff fluids to see if this eliminates the issues.
I have this symptom on my 2018 750xi. Not a misfire for sure. Changed the fluid and it went away after about 100 miles and all was good for about 1000 miles but then the chatter came back. Should I change fluid again or is it time to just replace the transfer case? Does this slipping cause damage if I drive it like that?
@brandonwhite9047 Sorry to hear you have this issue. I would do the fluid again. Try to get out a full liter. Drive for 250 miles and monitor. If not better then it would be TF replacement.
@BeardedDarin Hello, for your issue it sounds engine related. Check for fault codes, air leaks, plugs, coils et. Your error is not usually a transfer case issue.
Sorry if you mentioned and I missed it. If you have this trouble and you fix it. 1: How often after that is indicated to replace the transfer case fluid? Also 2: Is it recommended to replace the transmission fluid also? At how many miles? I know that "they" say that is "lifelong" but I am talking here about what is the best to do to preserve the transmission and transfer case. It is like - synthetic oil changes at 5-6k miles instead of 10k situation. Thanks.
Hi John, Transfer case fluid interval is determined by driving style and a calculation the car makes. I would suggest every 50 to 80K. Transmission fluid Lifetime is around 120K
Useful video - thanks. It would be useful to show how to do the fluid reset in ISTA afterwards. Worth mentioning that in my case experience most transfer case problems are caused by the cog stripping on the servo motor though?
I hear lot of complaints of many people had to replace transfer case on x7, what are the reasons for it to break? Is it just they newer changes oil of transfer case?
I have 2 part question: 1) Where do I buy that pump. 2) My 2006 X3 shudders at low speed. It feels like misfire, if unplug the two connectors at the transfer case module and the problem goes away. Plug the connectors back, problem comes back. I changed the transfer case (with a used TC along with motor). After replacement, if I place the vehicle in gear, at low speed, the vehicle feels like grinding and popping. If I unplug the connectors, problem goes away. I used the Foxwell NT710 to do all three resets (fluid, TC and servomotor), but problem still exists. What else can I look for? Thanks
Sorry to hear that Glen! It may be that you ended up with a faulty used transfer case. If the issue goes away when the connector is unplugged I would suspect that once you make sure the front axles look good and the front driveshaft is in good shape.
Changed fluid on transfer box and both Diffs on F25 2013 auto xdrive. Car feels amazing now and shifts quicker and quieter than before considering it’s done 124000m However since changing the transfer fluid I’ve noticed when car heats up it has a slight shuddering feel to it when accelerating up to 3 gear almost. I’m taking to a local mechanic today to see if he can reset DTF? If not I may change fluid again.
Nice explanation. Next week i will do this on my 2017.540i. But i have more simptomes. Usually uphill when i turn steering wheel fully right in first gear (parking manouvers mostly) i hear shutter on front left wheel one time ....sometimes i heared it from rear of the car two times...much louder when i go reverse...fully right again...Never fully left or when driving straight. No shuttering while driving....no strange noises...vibrations...grinding....the car has 60.000 miles...stock car..very strange sensation...feels like you touch the edge of the road with your rim....Any ideas ...? Cheers 😊
Hello, Sorry to hear you have these symptoms. It can be hard to trace down what the cause is. I would recommend disconnected the transfer case motor first by unplugging it and see if the symptoms are gone. If not then it is not the transfer case. But if it does go away then you can try the fluid change which can help.
Thank you for your informative video. I just have one question. I have these symptoms and strangely in colder weather the problems go away. This is why it led me to this video because I figured its either a liquid or rubber component causing this. Is it safe to assume it is the transfer case? Car is a 2012 750I Xdrive.
Hello, Your very welcome. The best way to be sure would be to unplug the transfer case motor and see if the symptoms are gone. I have had a few transmission issues but usually the chatter is from the transfer case. It also could not hurt to do a fluid change and then monitor.
Hoooly i had a battle with these errors: 54C6 (oil wear - replace transfer oil), 54C8 (resistor, it holds old values). So as long as 54C8 holds old values you'll have both errors appearing non stop. What to do is quite simple, delete the module error, it'll ask you to turn off ignition -> it'll delete the errors -> DO NOT SCAN the car for errors as it'll save the old values again, instead -> enter the ISTA (i've used ISTA+) or any other tool -> go to resistor exchanged, reset the resistor value -> then do the oil wear reset or vice versa, i don't think it matters -> you should be good to go as long as the resistor doesn't have faults in memory!
Good video! Its a shame BMW wont replace the fluid in the transfer cases as i understand they didnt use the correct fluid? I have these symptoms on our 2020 X7 xdrive. Maybe I missed it but what is the NEW fluid we are supposed to use? Is there a part number?
The fluid part changes by model and year. Best to have it looked up by the dealer with your VIN. If your X7 is low miles you may be able to get the dealer to offer some goodwill assistance for this concern.
@@AskTheCarExperts quick update, changed out the fluid and not more issues while turning at low speed. Had this done at a local independent shop familiar with BMW drivetrains. Tech told me the fluid was really dark. X7 has 62,200 miles. Thanks again!
Interesting…. I have the exact same transfer box on my 530d G31 and I cannot get any size pipe to fit it the plug hole. There doesn’t appear to have any gap between the inner bearing and cover
You do need a very small flexible hose to get into the cavity. In some cars it is recommended to remove the transfer case and drain it manually by tilting it and pouring the fluid out.
Hi, Great video! Suspecting this issue on my 2017 320d, the thing is that I’ve only experienced the symptoms three times over 2 months and about 4000km. It started happening shortly after changing the EGR valve. Can the EGR valve cause similar symptoms? Rather difficult to diagnose the problem when it’s not consistent
Hello, Thank you 😊 With it so infrequent it does make it harder. The EGR would potentially set a check engine light. It might be worth doing the fluid change anyway and monitor. It is good to catch it early.
@@AskTheCarExperts okey, Thanks for your input. I might as well try that. But does it mean that the transfer case is bad or the oil is bad when juddering starts to happen? Just a thought since you said that it might return😊
@@AskTheCarExperts yes the symptoms was gone was I unplugged the unit. I sucked out the old fluid, which was burnt and low. Installed new fluid, performed adaptation with autel. The car felt 100% after that. Thanks again for the info
Thank you so much for the video! My mechanic has changed the transfer case, transfer box, transfer case shift actuator motor but my car is still throwing codes 00539E, 005F39, 005F3A, 00601D, 00601E and 00E723. I'm getting so stressed and running out of funds and ideas. I really don't want to sell my car but it's becoming a bit of a nightmare. Do you have any suggestions what I can do next please? I'm going to ask him to do an oil change if he hasn't already. Any other advice would be very much appreciated. Best wishes from the UK!!
@shareenk5324 Looks like you have two open recalls as well for the driver and passenger airbags. E70 with the N62TU. It may be the normal feel for this power train set up. I chased this a while back. Does it only happen under light load under light acceleration? If you want to reach me directly email me at askthecarexperts@gmail.com Sometimes I don't get response notifications from youtube.
Sorry, I forgot this was the fault codes. The VTG system on this BMW is more complicated than the newer ones. The VTG motor is NOT the module on this model E70. The VTG module is in the left rear trunk area. This module could have water damage. You also would need to check power, ground, wake up signal, and the PT can signal to the module wiring. But I am wondering if the module is faulty since the transfer case and motor have already been replaced.
I have 2014 X3 I recently got some nice 21" rims and excellent condition Michelin tires for a steal, but I'm wondering if mounting them will cause any issues with transfer case/xDrive All 4 tires are 265/35/21, all 4 rims are 21x9 and identical 2 of the tires are Michelin Pilot Super Sport The other 2 are Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 Tread depth is also about identical Of course I would put the matching types together on each axle. The tread patterns are extremely similar, and tread depth is nearly identical. Any help would be greatly appreciated, I'm hoping I dont have to sell these and go searching for new ones. Thanks in advance 😅🙏🏼
Hi Nick, Larger rims do put more strain on the transfer case. Larger rims increases the energy needed to move the vehicle and reduces the mechanical advantage. This can lead to premature failure. But if you where going to do it, Yes you could use those since all 4 are the same rolling circumference.
Ohh interesting, I didn’t consider the strain from the larger wheels. They aren’t that heavy so hopefully that’ll help. My main concern was the slight difference in tread pattern between the 2 Michelin tire modes although very similar. Would changing the transfer case fluid when I swap the wheels help out? Thanks for all the help!
@@nickacevedo8550 Always a good idea to do the fluid change early. Tread pattern will not make a difference. Rolling circumference would. For the best transfer case life it is best to stick with stock rims and tires...but that can be boring 😀
I have a 15' x5d 105K miles with a chatter/studder issue. Took it to a BMW Mech. he changed the fluids in the Transfer case and both diffs. no codes came up, he said it could be coming the front diff., no grinding noise no howling noises. He said drive it awhile and see if it changes, so far it has been the same ( 3-4 days around town) My question is have you ever heard of the front diff. having this kind of issue? The oil in it was metal free but looked like muddy water. Should I have the oil in the transfer case changed again?
@dangregor-x3v Sorry to hear you have this issue. I would recommend disconnecting the transfer case plug and driving to see if the shudder is gone. If it is then this is not the fron diff. I have not experienced this symptom from a front diff myself. I would drive it 120 miles with the new fluid. If the symptom is still present and it was identified as the transfer case, it would need replacement or you can try one more oil change. The shop should get out about 16 FL oz with a siphon.
This exact problem happened on my 2019 G05 X5 M50D with 69000kms. BMW have a Service Bulletin published ( SIB 27 02 20 ) that suggests to do as you say - Change the transfer case fluid - after first checking for uneven tyre wear or mismatched tyres. My local BMW shop tested the car, by disengaging the transfer case and subsequently, changed the fluid - Problem solved. This was done under BMW goodwill as my car is out of warranty. This must be a known issue! I am very curious to see if the problem re occurs and if so, how BMW address it?
Hello, Correct there is a BMW bulletin on this issue. I think the goal is to prevent replacement of transfer cases before trying to fix with fluid changes. If the issue does come back they would recommend to replace the transfer case. I have had a few return and others where completely fixed.
My X3 has had a hesitation occasionally when accelerating uphill or under power. Worse in Eco Mode. Just had some new tyres fitted and it’s horrendous. Just crawling along any slight acceleration cause a jerk and a bump, less than 10mph. Take off the gas and it’s ok. Over 30 mph it seems better, negligible. Gets to 60/70 and cruises fine. It could be transfer case or it could be tyres. I hate to say I swapped warn out Pirellis for a lesser mid range tyre. Obviously supposed to be same size/spec. I fear these tyres are under size. What’s your opinion on possible front rear tyre sizes on this problem?
How do I distinguish between rear differential and transfer case problems? I am getting symptoms when turning but my instincts tell me it's rear diff. Thank you!
i have a stutter only at highway speeds. i first thought clutch slipping but it pulls absikutely fine at lower gears. i have no codes for tcase when scanned but after putting 2 grand into it and still having a stutter im thinking tcase???
I used a Hazet drain plug tool and cut the allen down to size. www.autohausaz.com/pn/143791_20_2135_3584__6_7-HZ-2760?BMW&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwy8i0BhAkEiwAdFaeGLZZ_-i53szKY1QOAuoQgEojWB411zvaXUHH7yKLX6b4GksjMrrXcRoChvUQAvD_BwE
@AskTheCarExperts thank you. Ive seen that the transmission plug needs to be torqued to 60nm. What are your thoughts on not torqing it down to spec since you are using this tool ?
I'm experiencing these exact symptoms on my BMW 750i - 2020. With my car only being 3 years old I wouldn't have expected to experience this and initially thought it was the tires rubbing. I'm still not confident it's the transfer case but your video describes my issue. I'm now trying to find someone who can do the flush to see if I can avoid spending 10k to get this transfer case replaced. Do you have any recommendations on where to get the flush done? And thank you for the video.
Hello Ahmad, Sorry to hear your BMW may have this issue. Any good BMW specialty shop will be able to do this for you. It need not be a dealer but they need to remove as much of the old fluid as possible. I usually can get about 1 Liter out before I add new fluid.
Hi. Thanks for the video, very useful info. I'm owning an X6 E71 from 2011, bought the car with bad tires (they were on the specs tho but the alignment was bad). I had this juddering when turning the wheels slightly so i changed the oil and used ISTA+ for oil reset function only. For few hundred kilometers it seemed that the juddering disappeared. In the meantime i got new tires on 20" following the bmw recommendations but the juddering re-appeared even worse now, when i accelerate smoothly it feels like it missfires. Do you think that if i'll replace the actuator it might fix the issue? Thanks
Hello, Sorry to hear your BMW has this issue. The shudder misfire feel is not usually fixed with the Actuator replacement. If the problem is still occurring after the oil change and reste it sounds like it will need the transfer case.
Arrrrr, Roger 🏴☠ Awesome video. What a great tool. I can honestly say I've never seen nor heard of that ratchet tool. Very cool. Video idea: How the X-Drive transfer case/gears work. Or, can you recommend a good source that explains its function? My 1er is RWD only but my wife's E84 is X-Drive. BTW, we fitted full Nokian Hakkapeliitta R3 full winter runflat boots on her car and it's amazing in the snow.
It is such a handy tool and worth the money. Not an Amazon tool unfortunately. Picked it up from Matco tool guys in the shop a LONG time ago :) I will have to see what I can put together for the t case info. I have to be careful for copyright stuff. Maybe I can draw it all on a notepad LOL 😆 I can do stick figures pretty well.
I have a 2007 BMW x3 and I am having this problem smh 🤦🏾♀️ i don’t know what to do.. it makes a knocking noise when I drive it .. does that mean it’s the transmission going out or I just need to change the fluids ?
Hi Danielle, Hard to say from your description. If the noise is from the engine then it would be an internal engine issue. I would have it inspected. I would not be able to guess the failure.
I already have the 4x4 and abs, as well as brake caution light on, I'm trying to figure out the source of the issue. I've heard the 4x4 actuator is a common problem and when the gear strips, it takes x-drive offline. But any additional input would be appreciated.
Hello , so if the problem persists . The only way to fix it is to change the whole transfer case for a new one or is it fixable ? I changed the oil and fixed the problem so far . I wanna now as they want to charge me $3000 AUD for a second hand transfer case Thanks !
Usually a transfer case motor issue will set a fault code specifically for the motor. Normally the failure is the internal clutch packs that may be better after an oil change in the transfer case.
Do I have to make sure the car is lifted evenly when I put the fluid like I do with the transmission fluid or is it alright if I just drive it up on a ramp ? My car feels like it skips a gear once in a while when I’m driving. Hopefully this is the cause of the problem
Ok I have this problem ...gears 1 2 and 3 ...seem to have problems changing jerking. It's much more pronounced when car is warm ...cold car ...no issues. Bmw told me to change the transfer case. Spoke to another mechanic ...who suspects it's the fluid.
I have a f34 that looses power when the wheel is just off center and will not go into park. I get a dash warning that states park can only be selected when stopped. I checked all the wheels speed inputs and they show stopped but still won’t go to park. Customer has had the shifter replaced, and transmission replaced prior. Also getting a code for input speed mismatch
Hi Roger, question bud. I have BMW X5 2012 E70 35i, lately on cold start the RPM jumps up/down and after 1 min it goes to normal level. Wondering, what would cause this and what should I me looking at? thanks bud.
Hi Tahir, This may be a small unmetered air leak or it could even be fuel quality related. I have had this also be an engine adaptation issue. If your scan tool can do it, clear your engine adaptation values and recheck.
Thanks a lot Roger. Highly appreciated for a quick respond, regardless. I always hold your advise on your youtube videos very high, and find your work very professional. God bless you and have a wonderful weekend. keep up the excellent work bud.
Great video! But I'm confused about transfer case fluid and differential fluid. I have Valvoline 75w-90 (GL-5 spec) can this be used in transfer case and differentials? My car is a 2004 2.5l x3. If not, can I use Valvoline Transfer case fluid? I read that DTF-1 replaced TF0870. Advanced auto site shows Valvoline Transfer Case fluid is exact fit but I do not see DTF-1 spec. Thank you
I had this problem on my f30 328i, when I was driving at 60 kmh or 80kmh and I just started slowly acceleration, the car was shaking for about 2 seconds then transmission changed gear, that was horrible fillings like transmission problems. Also whole car was shudder vibration on highway, in beginning i though because of wheel balance is bad, but it is not. So I sold the car and bought 2016 x3 35i, this car is so smooth and doesn't have this problems. I think this f30 problems only. Because i saw many of them with this problem.
Hi Steve, This would only disable to power to the front wheels. The vehicle would drive in rear wheel drive only mode. You will get a chassis light that will clear once the transfer case is plugged back in and the vehicle driven.
Hello Rex, The code for oil wear will only clear after a scan tool that can do the reset is used. But that should not cause a transfer case to not work. There has to be another reason for this failure.
@@AskTheCarExperts the codes I have are 440101 transfer box(vtg) end of transmission service life reached and code 440102 transfer box (vtg) oil wear 48097D transfer box: fault, clutch position known, no four wheel drive D355F8 signal (xdrive actuator information, 19.3.4) invalid, transmitter VTG We have replaced the transfer case and tried it with the replaced transfer cases module and then we tried it with the original module. Hi. Im changing transfer case fluid on my g30 and I was only able to extract 200ml. How much were you able to extract and what car is in the procedure? Thank you
So I have a question for you if I put my foot on the break on cold startup and put my car in reverse my idle air on the dash goes up and down is that caused by a bad transfer case it does it once in a while but when I turn on the AC you don't get to see the idle going up and down
I have seen this before. This is usually an issue with the program level in your engine computer. I would recommend having the software updated at your local dealer.
Hi i have a x3 35d 2009, i have the same problem, i did unplug the the cable from the transfer case after i drove it a little and the problem was still there, what can it be ? Best regards from Portugal
Hello Nelson in Portugal! If the symptom is still present then it could be a transmission slip. You can try to go through each gear in manual mode to help identify which gear is slipping. I would always start with checking fluid level and condition of the transmission.
I've been experiencing the chatter for more than a year before I knew what it I was. This is on my 2011 X3. I just today got a drivetrain malfunction warning along with a clunky idle. Are they most likely related or am I dealing with a spark plug issue also? Thanks!
Hi Shaun, Most likely these are two separate issues. The rough idle could be a misfire from multiple reasons. Scan and start with the basics of plug and coil swapnosis. Also air leaks can lead to rough idle and misfires.
From experience fluid change in the VTG usually doesn't fix it. Quote a VTG and sensor unit and be done with with. Just advise the owner to replace all 4 tyres each time.
Hi Devin, I have had some success with fluid changes and adaptation reset. Best to do some extra oil changes. Good point on the tires. Mismatched tires and different rolling circumference can cause wear in a transfer case.
No quite sure what component is the longitudinal torque module? Do you have a part number for that? Unless you mean the transfer case motor module. I cannot say I have replaced one on a newer BMW. I would have to say the motor module is normally not the failure. Unless you have some odd VIP ICM Steering failures which can bring down the FlexRay Bus. That can be caused the this module. But not this symptom.
Can you performed calibration procedure without t-case fluid service? Will it clear the code? I’m new to your channel and very much amazed watching you deal with so manu issues…best regards
Hey is this a ATC13 ? I drive a G30 530d xDrive and I try to change the oil but I didn’t have any problems. I just want to change the oil preventive to save the transfer case. But I only get about 350ml out. I also use the diagnostic tool BMW ISTA instructions It’s difficult to find a position where the oil is. Greetings from Germany.
Hello in Germany! Getting fluid out of these is a real pain. The best way is to remove the transfer case. But that is a pain. I would just do a few drain and fills which should freshen up the fluid.
@@AskTheCarExperts update Thanks for your reply. I sucked out the oil again but used a 4mm diameter hose, before it was an 8mm hose and it was a bit too thick. I sucked out about 500ml and it was dirty oil again. I will repeat the process after 1000km. Thanks for your video.
My 2019 X5 BMW has the same problem. The technician checked the car for 2 weeks and finally told me the transfer case deactivated, if I want to fix it, I need to pay $7050😂 Can I I fix it according to your video? Thank you so much!
I would recommend starting with the fluid change and driving for at least 200 miles. If the problem is still there then it will need a transfer case but often it can be fixed with a fluid change.
Ive just got my self a 2013 x3 3.0d on 76k and when driving it normally feels smooth but when im in traffic and just roll along in drive i get a feeling im driving on a flat tyre? it feels like transmission or a prop shaft banging any ideas
Did you manage to find out what was wrong with yours mate.. I have the same issue with mine. Acceleration perfect but when rolling the car judders on slow speed or when creeping
I used to have this shattering on highway steady rpm and MAJOR shattering when WOT , data log was all over the place , unplug the actuator and everything was gone ... proceed to oil change and fix 95% of the shattering!!!
Roger, I need to know if pulling the fuses has the same effect as unplugging the connector. On my 2014 X50i the judder has returned at 95Kmi after BMW replaced the transfer case under warranty at 54Kmi. I changed fluid twice and reset adaptions. I haven't yet driven 100mi.
@garyvanremortel5218 Sprry to hear that Gary! Pulling the fuse is not the normal way I diagnose this issue. In theory, if you can pull the fuse for the transfer case motor it would disable it. But it may effect other systems as well.
@@AskTheCarExpertsTight spacing prevents me seeing exactly how to disconnect the connector without breaking the retention feature. Can you tell me how to release it safely? I have the ATC45L. Now in the process of driving the 125mi.
Hello, thanks for sharing this video. Where did you get that tool for the fill plug? It looks like you are able to undo the plug without taking the brace off? I’ve been putting off this service because I’ve heard removing that brace is very difficult.
2014 BMW X1 95k miles changed my transfer case fluid because it had two codes my fluid was black as ever and had a bad burning smell so after I changed it problem still there going to change the whole thing out with another used one
Thanks for the video for better understanding 😊. On my F10 xdrive, i started using R20 wheels and after couple of months of usage the car started jerking . Bmw requested me to change transfer case. Then i done some research and i put my old 18 inch wheel back. Then the issue disappeared. Google helped. I believe it was cause by different manufacturers on front and back. Something new what i found was, even if the configuration is the same different manufacturers has differences in circumference which effect the transfer case . But i don’t know if i put my R20 back with same manufacturer the problem will still be existing.. any idea? :-)
Great Job figuring that out! Changing the rims and tires can definitely effect transfer case life. Transfer case replacement is not cheap. It might be an issue with the rolling circumference of the 20s but it is best to stick with stock.
Here in Sweden its Common knowledge if u have xdrive u dont have more then 1% MAX in circumreference between the rear and front Axle, u can use 20” but u need to have the tires circumreference higher than 1%. For example i bought my 530d x drive and it had 245/45/18 on both axels and that means 0% diffrence between front and rear axle! Hope this helps!
That is awesome!!!
Okey tank you
Thank you for a great video and an easy to understand explanation.
Hi Jim, Thanks for sharing your experience. Glad to hear my video helped and great to hear your 328 is back to being the ultimate driving machine!
I have a 2011 750Li,
I’ve been experiencing this “chatter” hesitation for a WHILE! No fault codes come up but so much has been done to the car and I’m still experiencing those symptoms you mentioned.
Thank you for this video, I’m hoping I can finally resolve the issue.
I hope so! Sometimes this vehicle can misfire without setting codes as well.
@jimbaunach4344 Awesome Jim! 👌
Thank you

@MattEversOfficial Hi Mat, Yes this shudder is not normal.
Great help!
Glad my video helped! Thanks for posting a comment!
Hi Dean! I hope the fluid change helped. In some cases the the transfer case needs replacement but I hope it fixed your X3's issue.
Thanks for sharing. That plastic gear can also fail. Great job solving it on your BMW!
Very cool! Thanks for sharing this info with us!
Thanks for the video. You along with a few others finally led me to the solution to my problem. I've been trying to figure this one out for over a year.
Hi Carl! That's great. Did the issue get resolved with the fluid change?

Today it happened on a flat road, as I put my foot all the way down as I was in a rush. The vehicle is currently getting checked at the dealership. Hopefully just need the oil change...great video!!!

Glad you found my video! They do feel very similar. Let me know how you make out and what you find.

@JodysCorner Great to hear it was fixed under warranty! Sometimes the fluid does not fix the issue many times it does.
Hi Collin, Crazy they did not offer a fluid change first! I hope it helps!
@@AskTheCarExperts is there a scenario where changing the transfer case is the only option rather than changing the fluid first?
So I had this issue where it felt like I needed a tune up when I was giving the car light acceleration up to speed. The car would jerk throughout the gears. I could go WOT and it seemed like no issue. Well the jerk started getting worse and I changed the transmission fluid and pan, changed HPFP, changed plugs and wires, changed VANOS solenoids... I changed it all until I ran across the word transfer case while researching. So I purchased a XDelete license and used the app to put the car in RWD mode and the problem immediately went away. I'm hoping just a fluid change can get my AWD back.
Wow, I have not heard of an X delete. That is interesting. The fluid change may help and it's always the best place to start.
@AskTheCarExperts xdelete is a fairly new app that allows you to switch between AWD and RWD. It has been working pretty well for me. I'm definitely going to do the fluid change when I can get hold of the pump you're using lol
@@Mr_Jay_Ones Thanks for sharing that info!
You are very welcome! I hope the fluid change helps!
Keep us posted.
How did you go? i have the same issue in my X7?
Hey Roger first video to pop up on Google when I was trying to confirm my symptoms and next diagnostic steps!
I recently started experiencing a shutter under load especially once I get into higher boost (18lbs+) in my e90 335
The car will shutter/buck almost as if it’s a misfire like you mentioned
Scanned the car when I got home because xdrive and abs were disabled at about 70mph on the highway plugged it up found 54c6, 55c6, and 55c3.
Just fixed 06 525 w this very procedure,great video.Ty
Awesome, Daniel!
The fluid is hard to get out. I would drive the 250 miles and then flush again.
@@AskTheCarExperts Thanks!
Thank-you for all your knowledge. It is very good advices specially of how changing the oil a few times might help. Thanks

Had this issue on 2007 328xi. Was lucky the oil change corrected my problem
THATS GREAT!
Thanks
Btw you’re videos have saved be an insane amount of money!!
I hate to say it still sounds like a transmission issue. Best wishes to you!
Uneven tire wear can be a culprit. My BMW transfer case never had a problem in over 120k, done 2 fluid changes in that distance with Red Line MT-LV that is compatible with BMW xDrive transfer cases.
@@Ashley_van_Schooneveld Absolutely! Rolling circumference can cause issues. Or incorrect tire sizes.
Thanks for this professional explanation, recommendations, and demonstration.
Your welcome James!
I hope it helps! It sounds like transfer case slip to me.
Mine did this years ago, and it's doing it again. I'm hoping that I can change the fluid again and keep running it. 🤞
I hope so!
Thanks for the video. Would a drivetrain malfunction error be transfer case related? And would it idle rough as well if it was the transfer case?
@BeardedDarin Hello, for your issue it sounds engine related. Check for fault codes, air leaks, plugs, coils et. Your error is not usually a transfer case issue.
@@AskTheCarExpertsthank you so much for the prompt reply.
Thanks Peggy, If I get a chance on a vehicle to go over the cog wheel issue I definitely will. Appreciate your input!
I hear lot of complaints of many people had to replace transfer case on x7, what are the reasons for it to break? Is it just they newer changes oil of transfer case?
In my opinion it is fluid quality. BMW does not have a good service interval for the transfer case.
@ if i dont want to to break, how frequent i should change it, is 60000miles sufficient like you said in video?
@chetanvangadi More is better with any maintenance. I would like 30K per service but 60k may be sufficient
Car feels amazing now and shifts quicker and quieter than before considering it’s done 124000m
However since changing the transfer fluid I’ve noticed when car heats up it has a slight shuddering feel to it when accelerating up to 3 gear almost. I’m taking to a local mechanic today to see if he can reset DTF? If not I may change fluid again.
I hope the second fluid change helped!
Excellent video as always Roger. Please see, if you can post how to replace Transmission cooler lines on X 5 E70 ?
Thanks Tahir, Unfortunately I don't have access to this style BMW but if it comes my way I definitely will.
Having issues with my 2017 4.0d, drives fine with no issuesbut get a slight clicking sort of sound on rotation. Is that what you mean by chatter?
Hello, No the chatter is a feel. Clicking can be something in a tire, brakes, axle joint...hope you trace it down.
Thanks for sharing this info!

Wow thank you so much!! LJ52916. I deeply appreciate this. Thank you again.
@@AskTheCarExperts thank you for checking! I'll email you directly and send you a photo of the codes! Thank you so much again. Your awesome!
I have 2014 X3 I recently got some nice 21" rims and excellent condition Michelin tires for a steal, but I'm wondering if mounting them will cause any issues with transfer case/xDrive
All 4 tires are 265/35/21, all 4 rims are 21x9 and identical
2 of the tires are Michelin Pilot Super Sport
The other 2 are Michelin Pilot Sport PS2
Tread depth is also about identical
Of course I would put the matching types together on each axle.
@@AskTheCarExperts thanks so much for the help
would it make a whistle noise when accelerating? Even if I step off the gas completely, it makes a whistling noise.
Hello, This issue does not make a noise typically. It is more of a feeling in the vehicle. The noise you have is most likely a different concern.
I have a 15' x5d 105K miles with a chatter/studder issue. Took it to a BMW Mech. he changed the fluids in the Transfer case and both diffs. no codes came up, he said it could be coming the front diff., no grinding noise no howling noises. He said drive it awhile and see if it changes, so far it has been the same ( 3-4 days around town)
My question is have you ever heard of the front diff. having this kind of issue? The oil in it was metal free but looked like muddy water.
Should I have the oil in the transfer case changed again?
@dangregor-x3v Sorry to hear you have this issue. I would recommend disconnecting the transfer case plug and driving to see if the shudder is gone. If it is then this is not the fron diff. I have not experienced this symptom from a front diff myself. I would drive it 120 miles with the new fluid. If the symptom is still present and it was identified as the transfer case, it would need replacement or you can try one more oil change. The shop should get out about 16 FL oz with a siphon.
is there a transfer case on an s-drive or only x-drive?
Great question, the S drive is rear wheel only. X drive would have a transfer case
My 2020 m340i makes a clunk sound from the rear when turning low speeds . Would it be the diff or the transfer case requires fluid change?
I would not recommend driving it much and to only use the stock rims and tires. Incorrect tires can cause permanent damage to the transfer case.
No mention of tires and alignment? I have solved a plethora of TC shudder with tires and alignment. The BMW SI B even tells you to check this first.
Very good point. I am surprised I forgot to mention that. Any rolling circumference difference can cause transfer case damage.
How do I distinguish between rear differential and transfer case problems? I am getting symptoms when turning but my instincts tell me it's rear diff. Thank you!
Hello, Disconnect the transfer case motor and if the symptoms are gone it is the transfer case.
@@AskTheCarExperts Thank you, I will try that!

Hey, one more question. Leaving the transfer disconnected for few miles will do any more harm? It's an ATC 450.
No that would just disable the transfer case from engaging.
Sorry if I missed it, but what brand of oil and weight do you recommend on the G05 2019+ X5?
How do you reset vtg oil after servicing the t-case?
This would be a test plan run using a scan tool that can do this reset. This can only be completed via a scan tool such as the Autel amzn.to/3EPowxC

That is a common problem you could definitely check first. If the gear is stripped start with that and a fluid change.

Hello, Correct, replacement would be needed. I have never done an overhaul on a travsfercase but it may be an option.
okay so it has nothing to do with the Transfer Case Shift Motor/Actuator?

Usually a transfer case motor issue will set a fault code specifically for the motor. Normally the failure is the internal clutch packs that may be better after an oil change in the transfer case.

My 4x4 light are on and a yellow BRAKE dash light is on does that mean its the transfer case
@mokuii8338 You will need to scan it. This could be the transfer case or something related to the dynamic stability control system.
Replaced transfer case but can’t get all wheel drive to work still. Have a code that says transfer oil wear. And I can’t erase the code. Any ideas?
Hello Rex, The code for oil wear will only clear after a scan tool that can do the reset is used. But that should not cause a transfer case to not work. There has to be another reason for this failure.

@@AskTheCarExperts Thank you, I'll start with that and share what I find!
Hi, how do you know it is not the longitudinal torque module problem?
No quite sure what component is the longitudinal torque module? Do you have a part number for that? Unless you mean the transfer case motor module. I cannot say I have replaced one on a newer BMW. I would have to say the motor module is normally not the failure. Unless you have some odd VIP ICM Steering failures which can bring down the FlexRay Bus. That can be caused the this module. But not this symptom.
another thing how do you deal with code 0578E on 2008 BMW X3...thank you
That code usually mean the transmission fluid will need replacement and then a recalibration and reset using a test plan for the transmission.
Can you performed calibration procedure without t-case fluid service? Will it clear the code? I’m new to your channel and very much amazed watching you deal with so manu issues…best regards

I would recommend starting with the fluid change and driving for at least 200 miles. If the problem is still there then it will need a transfer case but often it can be fixed with a fluid change.
got it, thank you so much!
Ive just got my self a 2013 x3 3.0d on 76k and when driving it normally feels smooth but when im in traffic and just roll along in drive i get a feeling im driving on a flat tyre? it feels like transmission or a prop shaft banging any ideas
I would take a look at the tires first for any abnormal wear.
@@AskTheCarExperts all new tyres ?
Still stuck with the same issue and no one seems to know what it is
Did you manage to find out what was wrong with yours mate.. I have the same issue with mine. Acceleration perfect but when rolling the car judders on slow speed or when creeping
Check all tyres first for wear and correct sizes but mine was the transfer box needed a new one
I used to have this shattering on highway steady rpm and MAJOR shattering when WOT , data log was all over the place , unplug the actuator and everything was gone ... proceed to oil change and fix 95% of the shattering!!!
Awesome Jason! That is a bif improvement! Crazy how this issue can feel like a misfire sometimes.
The tool I used is a Hazet tool that I cut down the Allen portion to allow me to sneak it in to this tight space.
2014 BMW X1 95k miles changed my transfer case fluid because it had two codes my fluid was black as ever and had a bad burning smell so after I changed it problem still there going to change the whole thing out with another used one
@@Qua-k1v Sorry to hear that. It sounds like it was really bad if the fluid was that dark.
@AskTheCarExperts yes it is it's like the car barley wants to go but end up moving down the road
Do you know which autel scanner you are talking about?
Any of the pro series are great scan tools
If my 2016 bmw 228i xdrive send random abs and traction light while driving is that my transfer case? Would changing the fluid help? Thank you.
Hello Joshua, I would scan the car to check faults. It may be the transfer case but it could be something else.
What fluid can you use other then bmw fluid ? Red line 75W90 fine?
Yes, That sound like an alternative fluid. I have heard good things about the red line products.
@@AskTheCarExperts great, looks like I’ll be doing a fluid change today.
If I leave transfer case unplugged can I drive the car like that for a week or 2 ? Until new transfer case comes in
You can actually but you won't have all wheel drive. But make sure the connector does not get wet.
