7500rpm Nissan L28 Engine Dyno - 350hp

  • IT’S always impressive when a naturally aspirated engine makes over 100hp per litre, and even more so when it’s using an older-style engine. While we were down at Powerhouse Engines working on my Nissan RB30 turbo build (read about it in the August mag), we saw this stout Datsun L28 motor being run up on the dyno, making around 350hp.

    The biggest problem with getting a LOT of horsepower out of the L-series engines is the lack of a cross-flow head. Have the intake and exhaust ports on the same side severely limits port size and flow characteristics. That being said, they did pretty well on this one to get that kind of performance out of it!😉

      @@C0astDelta In that case, you'd be pretty much stepping up to the R-series inline 6. (Twin-cam crossflow heads) i.e. R32, R34 etc. The L-series just are what they are, and they're super reliable as L6's go. If you want big horsepower and a more efficient combustion chamber design, then the R-series are the ticket. ;)

      You can actually make nice power and BMEP with that design, it's just more difficult to get better high RPM performance. The main thing I don't like about this design is assembling it since everything is bunched up on one side. Listen to it though. That sounds great!

      Rebuild any engine is a risky adventure. Its either gonna run great or fail catastrophically. The more you push its limits the more risk ya take with modifying it beyond designed capabilities. But that's all in how well you desigmed to engine to handle more power and the problems that come out from that. The cooling system is where not where ya wanna get cheap. Air flow is horrific on the z cars. 14ft engine bay and the front radiator cowling is too low. Washes all the air out the back under the car and not up. That's why the L28 series had a cooling fan that would turn on as ya walked away. So it doesnt burst into flames and shit. Bigger fuel pump, better breaks to wanna be able to stop 2.5 tons of fun. Dont forget that. Harder shocks in the rear with a higher booty is preferred. Engine had a lot of torque and slaming the rear end into ground will happen in not addressed right. Bigger wheels and tires. 17 in wheels max. A good exhaust. I had a set of monza headers and exhaust and it sounded mean. Has a great deep roar ya dont hear many have. Sound more motorbike tone to me. Not a fan. Deep sound and would bang flames out the back gearing to a stop. Loved it0

    Cooling it will be the issue on that engine. Shit skyrocketed at the end of that last pull. Air flow in the engine bay was never great on any model z car. Finally added hood vent on the S30 in 1980. Fuel injector hose would bake to shit first. Took me all damn day to change out mine. 8hrs to not catch fire was a win though.

    • @synthpro
      @synthpro 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Key thing with a engine like this is to add a nice large radiator, good oil cooler, electric fans, 1977 era 280z hood with vents, lots of heatshielding, and wide front valance air dam to help direct air through radiator/oil cooler. I have a stock 280z and just changing the radiator out to a larger aluminum radiator with more rows made a huge difference to where my temp guage sets. Heat was definitely a weakness on these cars but rust was far worse. It's really a shame because most L series engines out lived the car they were in.

      The reason for that price tag is to cover the cost of research and development that went into engineering the head. Because they are not mass manufactured the cost of production is even higher. You must also take in account the profit profit margin that must be gained to justify the development of such a product. So as you can see the car aftermarket is all about supply and demand. Don't be mad, its strictly business.

      @@Bruceillest101 I get that... last I read they are doing a new run of heads, but you need to buy a complete engine from them and they build it, but it's 90k. I get the whole paying for R&D but what's the point if only 7 people will buy your engine package. Not really making your money back. If they made those heads and sold them for 5-6k or so, I'd wager money, that in the long run they make more profit cause they would sell alot more.

      220mph would require about 670bhp and 250 would require about 985hp assuming you're on thin tires and your car is more aerodynamic than the stock car. I could list off a hundred different cars that would be better suited for that speed and would require less power to do it too

      @Jorge Castro well... in the spec rundown it says 3385cc so it's likely been bored and maybe stroked... which is why I said it's not technically a L28 anymore... L34 would be correct but I suppose that might throw off people who are both new and old to Datsun/Nissan L engines... a newcomer might think there's a factory L34 and a familiar might think it's bullshit because a factory L35 never existed...

      This is a 45k engine. It's built probably to compete in a specific class of racing. No one builds a L28 going for bang for buck. They are expensive for not much performance. It the way she goes.
