Been reading your 30 year old book and now watching this today. A small group of us are planning a trip in September this year. Now I really can not wait till September and paddle there. Thank you for the information and history about this place. I'm so excited for this first trip to the park.

    a worthy sentimental journey Kev..

At 71 with back issues and arthritis I have learned to enjoy everything I can still do and to avoid regretting what had to give up. Listen to your body and use your determination to make the most of whatever mobility you can muster. A wonderful video.

Gorgeous... I've seen some of those lakes from the crack but always wanted to see them from the water. As you know, your books have meant a lot to me. Huge bummer about your back but great tribute to the thirtieth anniversary of it all 👏👏 And congrats on the soon-to-be 20k!

I’ve used your books (and videos) to go to Algonquin for the first time in 2011, and then to Killarney in 2016. We even stayed on that same campsite on Killarney Lake, it was a spot I’ll remember for a long time. Thanks for everything you’ve done for the last 30+ years to help us appreciate and get out to these amazing places!

Cool vid Kevin. I worked in KP the summer of 72 and now
KP is the standard I guage everything by. Love OSA lake. We cut the portage from there to George lake but I hear they closed it because it was too extreme. Best job of my life!!! Isn't getting older great??? Lol. Safe Paddling! !!

I can totally relate to you with your back as I have herniated discs and have been flat on my back for a week. For this to happen on a trip would be so frustrating and painful. Wow that was 30 years ago! It seems like yesterday that I invited you to speak about Killarney and your book for the Outdoors Club and SSFC on the day that you had a job interview there! I watch your channel with great interest as you show me things that I now live far away from. I live on the west coast now and I still get out paddling canoes an Kayaks, but watching your videos makes me want to paddle some of my old routes in ON.
Rest that back and keep exploring. Cheers

Hi Kevin, I hope you back is better soon. A few years ago my wife and I were headed up to kayak the Pukaskwa coast and my wife pulled a muscle in her back just before we left home. She had the heated seats on in the car the whole way up and we started out. On day 2 of the trip we had six foot seas that really pounded us for several hours but when we landed my wife said her back was cured. A Lake Superior adjustment? Take care.

I had a bad back for about 20 years. It was diagnosed as Ankylosing spondylitis, but it never showed up on x-ray. Pain killers didn't work that well. Finally my brother-in-law gave me a strong massage and put me on an electronic massager for a couple of sessions. That cured it!
If you haven't tried that kind of thing, Kevin - highly recommended!

Thanks for sharing this video. Killarney is one of my favorite places on earth. My older brother and I did a week long trip there around 1980, paddling Killarney lake, OSA and Muriel. The previous year we made a similar trip to Algonquin which was also incredible. I made the trip driving from Ohio to Toronto, where my brother worked for CBC, and we'd head out from there. He is gone now but I hope to make it back to Killarney soon with friends to share that beauty with them. I bought your first book not long after it came out as a memento of that trip. Also just picked up your latest book on Algonquin, a great read.

Kevin, I chatted with you and purchased "Once Around Algonquin" at QuietWater this year before everything was cancelled...little did we know. The book was great and I thoroughly enjoyed this latest video. Getting older is natural and as I will be 72 this year and battled cancer 2 years ago I still maintain 8 canoes but hauling my favorite Chestnut "Pal" is a chore without help. So be it, I get out, have some aches and pains but tell myself that I don't have time to not go out. Thanks for all of your knowledge and travel experiences...hope to see you at QuietWater next year. I'll bring you a bottle of our local Bourbon from Cleveland, OH.

Kevin, for your back have you considered a canoe trolley. They best one I've seen in action on the portage between Opeongo and Happy Isle Lake used bicycle wheels and two guys left all the gear in the canoe and each grabbed one end and off they went. They arrived after us and were gone. We never caught up.
Canoe trolleys may not be great on really poorly maintained portages. However, they seem fine for Algonquin and well used portages. That's good for me ☺️

On a related note, last summer for our trip My wife and I rented an ultralight Souris River Quetico 16 and I couldn't believe how nice it was to Portage with a 39lb canoe on my middle aged shoulders/back. We love Killarney. It is the most beautiful place in the world. My wife and I did two canoe trips in '94 and '95 and stayed at the campground one or two years before that. It is truly God's country. Our first trip to Kilarney was around '93 I guess. They were still blasting on the road to straighten it out I guess. We had an old van that died just as we entered the park. Used the ranger station marine radio to call a boat service station in the village. Ya, he was willing to take a look at the van. Two of his buddies came out with a truck and tow rope and our van disappeared. Got a ride into the village a day or two later and our engine control module was bad. Either he had to sent someone into Sudbury for a new or he had an old one he saved setting on a shelf. He installed the old one and the van worked again. Feels naked to be hundreds of miles from home w/o transportation with wife and daughter.......... SO..."what do we owe you?" 18 mile(?) tow into the village, trouble shoot a vehicle, and install a hard to get part. $100!!!! total, that's all. He could have charged us whatever he wanted that far from Sudbury but he charge lower than a far market price. The ranger and people of the village were and I assume still are wonderful. My only regret is we have not been back since '95, So many places to see in this great world of North America but still Killarney is a gem and the best. th-cam.com/video/i2xRVW4AC5I/w-d-xo.html

Are you referring to running the shaft on the gunwale? If so, I wouldn't have been able to paddle all that time by not doing that. It's a proper technique to lessen stress on the wrists after paddling thousands of strokes.

Hi Kevin: Boy, 30 years ago. Were you still classified as a callow youth? I was a mixed up 50 year old, battling alcoholism & unsure of my life's direction. Lot has passed since then. Sobriety & a renewed awakening of my love for bush country & canoeing. Your book was one of my sources before my first trip to Killarney.. The drive from Pickering is 6 hrs now & tiring for an old man as well as meaning a day & 1/2 each way. However, your video has c ertainly shown the beauty of a treasured place. Thanks Brian 80

Other youtubers focus on the fishing and landscape, you definitely include landscape and are extremely vague on the fishing; however, I love the knowledge and history you provide. It always intrigues me learning the land's past. I've watched many of your videos and love the wildlife knowledge and foraging information you provide as well. Back go's out randomly for no reason and bags me up for days if not a week and the non stop pain is the worst part. Then lets up just as randomly, I just deal with it best as I can but really sucks when canoe trippin. The tangents you go off on are enjoyable, lots of us like to listen to the things you talk about! Thank you for the Killarney backgrounder. I have back issues, too. I once had to extend a trip in the Massassauga PP after my back went out when I tried to carry too much on a portage. Now I take over-the-counter back pills with me but I also take a reasonably light back brace. I keep it my clothing dry bag. I've used it some but mostly it's for emergencies. I hope the rest of summer paddling adventures go better than this one (even though you got us some beautiful shots)

That was a nice head start Tom gave you there with a lift and a huge lake trout! Love the CCS multi-color tarp . The lily pads on Artist Lake were amazing! The music interspersed throughout really enhanced the viewing experience. Sorry your back went out - that stinks. I'm 54 and have had some back issues too. Impossible to get comfortable. Loved the history stuff. Favorite quote "I'm hurting...but I love it here... it's amazing"

I really enjoyed watching this one Kevin, My dad passed, in April, I was stuck in lock down out west, I am heading back to Ont, in Aug, I have all my canoe gear there at his place. I am spending a few weeks there in mid Aug, and my goal is to get out on the water.

Kevin. Thank you so much for this video. The way you tell stories and film is simply fantastic. This is my favourite yet of all your work. The music is perfect. Such a special place. You brought so many of us so much joy. Thank you. What you do is so important to help preserve these treasures, and it is also important for the good you do by bringing so much joy and peace. Thanks for being real and for being honest. I hope your back recovers soon. Thank you Kevin.

I certainly enjoyed the video. I love the Killarney area. I must have been one of the first to buy your Killarney book. It’s been in my cc collection for 30 years. Sorry about your back. I’ve been in treatment for cancer for almost a year now and had some pretty major surgery so I’ve been house bound for so long. This video brought back so many good memories. Thank you. I hope to be able to get out in September

Thanks so much, I truly loved it, I subscribed to your channel yesterday while researching northern trees, when you were up at Kettle Lakes Provincial Park, my neck of the woods, Timmins to be exact. I liked what I saw, and after a few hours of your videos I was 'hooked', your showcasing of the beauty of our natural province made me so proud. I never was into boating nor hiking, but our wilds is my passion. I hope that your back gets better, mine isn't from a fall from a local mining headframe, fifty years ago while evading a watchman, that's another story lol.
