The Winds of October - Killarney Solo Canoe Trip - 4K

  • A chilly October 5 day solo canoeing and hiking adventure in Killarney.
    I get a little bit of everything in this one, including the first snow of the season and some wicked winds that almost catch me out while crossing David Lake.
    I hike up Silver Peak and take in the amazing 360 view from the top. The La Cloche Range is about 2.3 million years old and these peaks used to be higher than the Rocky Mountains!
    Today, Silver Peak is about 550m high, similar to the CN Tower in TO.
    I also try out a new shelter / full coverage tent for my hammock... The Onetigris Rockdomus.

      THanks! I could probably have more subs I suppose but I just don't post that often and rarely do all those things you're supposed to do to get more subs 😄. I'm pretty busy with everything else in life and I like to take time with the edits etc. It's ok though, I like it when folks hear about it from other people and then come back if they like it. Thanks again for watching.

    There is a tap up there near the top. they installed it in 1936. it feeds all the lakes of Killarney. if it wasn't running there would just be big dry holes instead of lakes.
    I need new boots too. I just finished a 10 day in there and lost my big toenail on day 2 for the second time in 2 years. the other was while doing my first winter camp. I hate hiking boots.

    Jason, I was impressed with your trip back across the lake in high winds. I also have a Keewaydin 15 but I have the pack boat version. If you can borrow one and try it in windy conditions I’d recommend that. It is far more stable and your profile in the wind is much lower . I hated giving up my canoe paddle for a kayak paddle but it does seem more efficient on open waters even in light winds. You videos are astounding artwork and I am thrilled each time one comes out. Spectacular fall views buddy. That wind though. Killarney is a special destination. Silver peaks is not an easy hike, we've done it 3 times to date. Bad knees (husband) keeps us from doing it again. We have amazing memories. Thanks ✌

      Yeah its a full day to get up there. It kicked my ass so much that I made a pact / resolution to get back in shape! I started Jan 1, weighed 170. 9 mos later I'm down to 145. I can't remember the last time I was this slim. Cardio / strength classes 3x a week and cutting out most carbs /added sugar has been the trick for me. I just need to maintain it now 😳 It's not bad actually. I did a big loop in algonquin a couple weeks back with lots of portages and I felt much lighter and stronger, not nearly as winded. Going to have to keep it up if I want to keep trippin!

    Hi, long time no see - great video. I was in Killarney last week and ALL the front country and back country spots were booked. We booked early spring. You had the place to yourself 😮 I think I'll plan an October trip. Do you remember your site # on David Lake?

    Another great video! With the winter fast approaching I'm guessing we will be waiting until next spring/summer for new content from the one they call Tumblehome - Canoeist Videographer Extraordinaire. Any plans in the making for trips next year?

    Another amazing work Jason, with a “hair raising” high wind crossing. I drive a Keewaydin 15 as well but Kevlar with carbon trim so you drive an even lighter version. Learned a good lesson from you with low bracing broadside to the wind, worked well. I prefer a kayak paddle in situations like these as the Keewaydin is basically a kayak without a deck. What do you keep in the waterproof bag in the bow and what do you use for a boom-stick and wind control for microphone? Thought it worked well.

      @JasonIrwinTumblehome  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi there, sorry for the late reply. I find that in the Keewaydin I sit a little high in the front (with my pack in the rear). The waterproof bag is my food bag... evens the trim by putting it up there :-). For wind control I put little foam windsocks on the GoPro mic, and on the Canon r6 too. I bought a 20 pack on amazon and then cut them to fit... use some double sided tape to keep them in place. They're not perfect but do make a big difference. between that and some audio sweetening in post I can usually get decent audio. I. have a little Rhodes mic for the Canon but I rarely put it on.

    Mornin Good to see you back - is that oct 22? i was thinkin when u made that crossing - bet he wished he had the Carolyn Jane - stable and u cud have knelt in it to get ur centre of gravity lower - awefully hi in that new canoe - look forward to more Sir take care

    • @JasonIrwinTumblehome
      @JasonIrwinTumblehome  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah the CJ would have been a little more stable but I actually do feel fairly stable in that Keewaydin. It's so narrow that you can brace your legs firmly on either side and it gives you great control. It moves around more and is more tippy but I feel fairly confident in it because of that solid connection. Oct 22 sounds about right.

    Great to see a new video up. Amazing scenery and the views from the top. The wind on your trip back looked intense and stressful. Then the owl..I like that you tell or describe to the viewer what animal is making the noise or call. Thanks for sharing.

      @JasonIrwinTumblehome  ปีที่แล้ว

      thanks! I've had that kind of owl experience before / close to the hammock and hooting at night. It's amazing. Its a very throaty kind of call.. kind of freaky at close range.

    Great video and i have been thinking of getting that Tigris hammock enclosure too and it seemed great. You mentioned about needing a new under quilt and not sure if you know about Little Shop of Hammocks who is a Canadian cottage vendor but I bought a new complete setup this year from them good to -5 and couldn’t be happier with the quality. I have got a lot of use out of it this year and still 8 days coming up in Algonquin in a couple of weeks. Thanks for the video .

    Nicely done. A couple of suggestions from an aging canoeist and hiker. First, get some hiking poles. They add stability and are especially valuable going downhill. Second, when you have an empty canoe it sometimes helps to add weight to the bottom. A dry bag filled with water or some big rocks. Getting weight down low in the canoe makes a big difference in tough conditions.

    • @brentkelly5445
      @brentkelly5445 ปีที่แล้ว

      i did that hike 2 years ago and picked up solid branches to use as poles(first time). i tore through it. just finished 10 days in there portaging the rugged south to north and back route, and grabbed branches again to use with pack (discovered knee issues 3 weeks ago) makes huge difference ...up/down/lateral stability.

    • @JasonIrwinTumblehome
      @JasonIrwinTumblehome  ปีที่แล้ว

      yup... a set of poles would have been particularly good on the final steep stretch (both up and down). I should have just made a pair! And yes again with some weight in canoe! I just didn't think it was going to get that swirly and powerful but I should have seen it.

    • @JasonIrwinTumblehome
      @JasonIrwinTumblehome  ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow that is a big trek... must have been awesome. I would def have poles for a hike like that.@@brentkelly5445

    Nicely composed video, love the still photography. FYI if you care : A glacial erratic is glacially deposited rock differing from the type of rock native to the area in which it rests; the rocks on you hike, at your campsite and the surrounding area were all gneiss.

    • @JasonIrwinTumblehome
      @JasonIrwinTumblehome  ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah ok cool. I will dig deeper into that... I assumed these were erratics. Thanks for the correction!
