@@Thomatensoep it’s a very nice experience. The system is pretty comfortable for me and the design is great. If you just want to play 3ds games though I feel like any model can do the trick. Though if you want a definitive 3ds experience new 3ds is the way to go
I have the “New” 2DS Xl and man do I love it. I was never really a fan of the 3DS and I wanted to be different compared to all of my other friends, so that’s mainly why I got it. That little “dust cover” at the bottom is actually one of my favorite little features to it. Idk why, but when I would play on my DS or 2DS, I’d always manage to pop the games out mid game and then have to go through the process of regaining all of my progress again. This little dust cover on the New 2DS Xl keeps it so I don’t accidentally fling my games out. Although, the only thing I can say that I dislike about the New 2DS Xl is the stupid small stylus lol
I've been thinking about this video quite a bit lately. I think I need to revisit this topic. I've used my New 2DS XL more and I've gained a better appreciation for it. Be on a lookout for something about this in the upcoming months. You bring up some great points with the little dust cover.
@@jaguar4120 I think it's best explained as feeling delicate. It feels like it's gonna break every time I open the hinge. Not just the feel either, the top screen have been known to fall out, because they're held in just by glue, as opposed to the other models, which are secured in by screws. It's a shame really, I love the form factor of the device, and the easy access to the sd card and the dust cover are quite neat. I would pay good money for a high quality New 2DS XL.
A few things. Nintendo's 2DS original was literally for kids. There were a lot of complaints about the durability of the consoles in lieu of children, so that was their response. A cheap, easy to use version that a 6~12 year old can use without worrying about destroying it, or damaging the 3D button due to being careless in how hard it was pushed up or down or how often. Nintendo never took off the 3D for the original 2DS for any other reason than that. However, for the New 2DS XL, they removed the 3D as they had lost a lawsuit and had to pay royalties for every 3DS/N3DS unit sold.
The original 2DS is definitely made for kids. I have a few, and they seem very durable. I haven't tested them though. That's interesting about the lawsuit. I wasn't aware of it. Thanks for sharing
I own the new 2ds xl. I love it, the reason I got that particular model is because I owned a 3ds years before but never liked the actual 3D, it messes with my eyes on longer runs, but with the new 2ds I have the c stick. That plus it’s price point point was amazing for the large library by the time I wanted to go back to it. I picked it up for 100$ brand new. One of my favorite games is Metal Gear Solid 3D. I live for MGS and I think the 3ds version of 3 is the best version. It was the perfect model of 3ds for me. The 3D feature would never be used by me anyway.
No doubt the New 2DS XL is a good console. I actually went back and revisited this topic for another video. I liked playing games on it. To be honest, if you're playing 3DS games, I don't really care how anybody does it.
I get that the new 2ds xl is not a good console to represent the 3ds, but i would say that it is the most efficient, it's comfortable, has better processing power that the older ones, and can play all the games that require a C-Stick! so i get that it is not a good system to bear the name of "Best 3ds console", but I believe that it is one of the best ways to play. i own a 3ds and both 2ds's, and i would definitely say that the 2ds line is MUCH more comfortable to play. but i do agree, the 3d is cool and the new 3ds XL is the best way to play 3ds games.

i used to have all 3ds models but tbh i didnt like the New 2Ds XL it didnt feel right in my hands and it was kinda sharp on the edges i think the original 2ds is one of the best i also love the New 3Ds XL but my personal fav is the launch mod i have it in pink and it looks so pretty and its also very small its the same size as my iphone so i can put it in my pocket and forget about it also is the most comfortable to hold for some reason and bcs of the size it has by far the most sharp screen from all the models in the new 3ds XL i can really see the pixels and it doesnt look that good especially in pixel art games

Even though I have yet to use it, I feel like the New 2DS XL is the best model. Why do I think it is the best? It has a larger screen similar to the XL models, it has the better processing power of the New systems, and it has dust cover for the cartridge and micro SD slot (this will help reduce the dust from entering the system). Most importantly, the micro SD is easily accessible, there is no need to unscrew the system's cover just to get the micro SD anymore. I know that the MSRP was cheaper for a brand new New 2DS XL, but I'm not sure by how much. There is no reason for me to use the New 3DS XL just because it has 3D, especially since I never use the 3D feature. Of course, the best 2DS/3DS console to buy is subjective and it depends on the person. Some prefer the smaller screen size of the old 2DS/3DS, some prefer the form factor of the old 2DS, some prefer the larger screens of the XL models, some prefer the screen size on the New 3DS, some prefer having 2 bigger shoulder buttons instead of 4 smaller ones, and so on. I personally would've preferred if the system has the shape of the old 2DS over the clamshell design, it would be more comfortable to hold, and I don't have to worry about the hinges.
Sounds like you have given this a good deal of thought. Having bought two New 2DS XL consoles, I’ll say that it’s not a bad handheld at all. I even revisited this topic in a video I made this year. I love playing games on it. It does have cheaper feeling plastic and lacks the 3D effect. Those are the two reasons I don’t prefer it. But, if you don’t like the 3D effect and you don’t mind how if feels, I’d say go for it! You can’t go wrong getting a console that plays 3DS games.
@@NeanderMeander Thank you for understanding. Just to clarify things, I don't blame you for not liking it, everyone has their preference. I actually enjoyed your videos about the 3DS. The New 3DS XL is definitely better since it has 3D, and the unscrewing off the case just to get to the SD card isn't a big deal, especially since most consumers will rarely ever remove their SD card (and some never did even after a few years of owning the system).
I have Old 3ds xl, new 3ds xl and new 2ds xl and prefear to use 2ds. It's lighter, more ergonomic form for me and i not fan of 3d effect even on new 3ds
I'm saving up for one of those consoles but it's still too hard to choose. Old 3DS is just too...old 2DS doesn't look portable. You can damage stick and buttons. Really like the clamshell thing. 3DS XL is fine, I guess. It just doesn't feel really special "New" 2DS XL looks good but also have many doubts about it New 3DS and New 3DS XL are bit too expensive for me...
I love the original 3DS. It looks great in person. But it is older and runs slower. If it were me, I would stick to the New 3DS and New 3DS XL. Those are fast and can play games in 3D and 2D. they at least give you the option for both play styles.
Nintendo 3Ds is absolute top notch of consoles from Nintendo. It was console changer in 2011-2012 with the 3DS Effect. I remember when i got my first New 3DS (Basic size) in 2016 when i had saved enough money as student. And i was thrilled and spent months and months playing only on 3DS and almost forgot about my high End PC. :D Then year ago i bought also used 3DS XL (non NEW) and i love the bigger screen for games like Story of Seasons (Which does have portraits for characters) and Rune Factory 4. Also the possibility you can play on 3DS SNES, NES, GBA, NDS, some N64 games is amazing! If you homebrew it. Sooo amazing console. I still play on it time to time when i feel overburned from Nintendo Switch or either from PC. It's really super console and the lifespan of hardware is timeless. (My friend still have DS Console from 2004 and its working like new, just amazing, if someone tells me Nintendo is not quality product then ya know xD) Apology for long text, loved your video!
A bit harsh on that New Nintendo 2DS XL and those who desired it. Besides it being the swan song for the 3DS line, it was an answer to the fans of the original 2DS, who didn't get an XL version or even an official Circle Pro for 2DS. Frankly, early into the 3DS line, Nintendo pretty much demanded that all 3DS games be developed to be played without turning on 3D to begin with, so to say all of the games were intended for 3D is unfortunately not accurate in this case. Had the original 3DS had the face tracking ability of the New 3DS in 2011, then I believe that 3D would have been treated seriously and not just as a gimmick. Yes, I know a handful of titles are best played in 3D, but the majority make no difference unfortunately. I don't disagree that the New Nintendo 3DS XL is the better option for the word definitive to be crowned upon it, but treating the New Nintendo 2DS XL that way is unfair to those adults with vision issues that desired a version that was more premium than the 2DS.
I’m not sure how I missed this comment for over a month but I’m glad I’m finally seeing it. To be honest, I didn’t know such a device was desired, and I don’t intend for that to sound mean. Every 3DS has the ability to turn off the 3D, making every model a 2DS. My apologies to anyone who I unintentionally hurt by my critique of the New 2DS XL. I will say that the New 2DS XL has the absolute best special editions Nintendo has ever made.
The 2ds xl is kinda a weird console bc it’s not a great value like the old 2ds and is more fragile than the old 2ds. It also has a tiny stylus and has the cameras underneath the screen, plus the speakers are on the area where your palm is instead of on the right and left of the touch screen like a normal ds console
The cartridge cover was a great idea. Unfortunately they put it on a version that lacks features. Though, if you haven't seen the followup to this video, I have come around to the New 2DS XL. I really put some hours into playing games on it and it turns out it's not as bad as I was making it out to be.
The ds lite had it but it made senese because not every ds owner played gba games but the 3ds cartidge slot worked with ds and 3ds games so what’s the point
A couple of things about the "New" 2ds xl, the model has a couple of really good and really shit things you didn't really mention in the video, the flap is quite useful as it prevents gamecarts from ejecting in your pocket (RIP my copy of pokemon moon I saved up for for months then lost within a week) and it also contains the sim card slot making it a lot easier to remove than on the other models where you need to open the system up, the system is a lot lighter while still having the 2 large screens while also being smaller in the pocket, the speakers don't really matter all that much if you're playing out and about as you'll have headphones or just play without sound (if you have any decency of course), and the 2d screens are not all that important if you're planning on modding the console since obviously gameboy games and retro console games dont need 3d making it probably the definitive system for modding taking everything else into consideration. Now for the bad. The system is a lot harder to repair and hard-mod than the 3ds system, some examples include: the battery being glued in as opposed to removable, the c-stick being much harder to remove, and the shoulder buttons being soldered to the board as opposed to the new 3ds xl where they're just connected by ribbon cables. The stylus is tiny and while that can be rectified by just buying a telescoping one off of ebay or something, it's still not ideal, the battery is slightly smaller so you should probably carry around a portable charger if you plan on playing a lot without access to a wall plug such as on a long train ride or a camping trip, it's made out of noticeably cheaper materials, and the top screen has a tendency to crack fairly easily. Overall, it's the perfect system for modders or really anyone who doesn't care for the 3d effect, but it's not like it's one or the other, well, with these prices maybe it is, but once it dies down a bit you could literally just get both, use the 3ds at home and the 2ds out and about perhaps?

So the 2ds lx build is that bad? So the screen is cheaply built to the point they crack easily? That right there is a big red flag not to get the system.
The faster processing power, face-tracking 3D, changeable faceplates, mat finish, and portability make the regular New 3DS my personal favorite out of all of them. The only issue is having to unscrew the back faceplate every time I want to access the SD card (which your gonna have to do a lot if you homebrew your system like I do).
I really like the New 3DS too! The smaller size is great. Having to unscrew the back isn’t ideal. I wonder if Nintendo designed it that way to deter modding.
Nice quality video! However, there was no need to talk about the history of 3DS in this specific video because the title is "new 3ds xl vs 2ds xl", so I expected to see only a comparison video.
In my opinion if you don't play with the 3D on, you are seriously missing out on the full experience. I know some people complained about eye strain on the OG model, but the Eye Tracking on the "New" 3DS Model is amazing.

I haven't watch the video but I'm gonna say the original 2DS is the best one, is just as powerfull, cheaper and more comfortable to actually use, perfect for Smash, and Zelda.
There are many people who prefer the original 2DS over all the other models. I think it's great! The more time I spend on each of the 3DS variants, the more I come to appreciate them all.
Yeah, that's what I've heard. Though I'm surprised at how many people like the 3D. Some have even told me they gave it another try after watching a few of my videos and ended up liking it. Maybe peoples tastes have changed over time. I don't know.
2ds is most comfortable “new” 3DS is most compact “new” 3dsxl is my favorite and new 2dsxl I don’t like because I use the 3d on every game available. It makes it look so much better in my opinion
I own both a 3DS and a 2DS. While I wouldn't mind buying a New 3DS XL, that model is just too expensive looking and feeling for my taste. I do really like my og 3DS, it looks so sleek and nice.
The New 3Ds XL definitely has a premium feel compared to the New 2DS XL. Though that original model is probably most premium feeling. It's looks really good in person too!

The standard size New 3DS is the best model. The screen isn't too big, so the picture doesn't get stretched out on 3DS and DS games. Add in the customization of the plates, and it's a no brainer.

After holding all models, I'd say New 3DS XL is the best even if you have small hands or care about optimal screen resolution.
Here in 2023 when prices are insane. I purchased an original 3DSXL in near mint condition and it’s been absolutely perfect. Performs perfectly for 3ds, nds, and GBA games. I kept feeling like I was missing out on the new 3DSXL because of the extra stick and face tracking. I purchased one in good condition but to be honest, the build quality on my 3DSXL feels better to me. I think it’s because of the metallic finish. Also, because of the metallic paint on the US newXLs, it’s very hard to find one in good looking condition without paying the price of a PS5 digital edition, or importing one and installing CFW. To those still looking, highly recommend a good condition 3DSXL in 2023, if you are just focusing on 1st party nintendo games. Great analysis of all the consoles
You're right! The original 3DS XL is a great console! I really like the feel of it. I put many hours on my red version. I really wish I hadn't have traded it in for the New 3DS XL.
2ds xl - nice and light and yes the cover for the slot is probably it's best feature. That being said my New 3ds XL is my favorite though I do not like the open cart slot.
If you dont care about the 3d just buy a 2ds thats not xl because it does everythinf that a 3ds does just without the 3d and the clamshell design. If you want the best 3DS model like New 3DS XL or New 2DS XL In my opinion just get the new 3ds xl, it feels more premium than the 2ds toy like feel and youcan easily just turn off the 3d on the 3ds its overall more value than a 2ds
I didnt know the difference between the old 3ds xl and the new. i ended up getting the Zelda gold old XL, once i learned the new 3ds xl has more RAM i regretted old 3ds xl purchase
There are so many editions, I can imagine people getting confused. I was following Nintendo very closely during the 3DS era. I was aware of all the different models when they released. If I hadn't, it would have difficult to know the differences.
It looks like a premium device compared to all the other models. I think the other models have a more "toy" look and feel compare to the original. That's not a bad thing either.

I have a DSI XL And 3DSXL What's worse is the right Hinge on My 3DS XL broke So I gotta be careful when Playing. But now with the Ds's Discontinued it's hard To find. the Galaxy 3Ds XL is nice but wasn't advertised Alot. I'm gonna save up for 2 (3DS Xl's)

My biggest thing I don’t like about the 2ds xl is how it looks and feels just looks and feels super cheap compared to all of the other models. The new 3ds xl is my favorite of them all!

Yeah I didn't get that one about the 2DS being the definitive edition like seriously you have the option to turn off the 3D. My one regret is not buying a few of those limited options because now these crack smokers on eBay think I'm going to pay $500+ for something that's not even sealed in the Box.
Yeah, I'm not shelling out 500+ for a used special edition. 3DS pricing is so far off from what the consoles are worth. At most, they are worth what they retailed for. If someone is paying more then they need to reevaluate their priorities.

Got a 2DS XL in 2021 (!) as a foray into Nintendo (Switch games are too expensive for the beginner dabbler). The INTERNET convinced me that no one uses the 3D and it wasn't worth the extra weight and premium price. For a newbie, the 2DS XL is light, flat, ergonomic and a great way to get to know Nintendo gaming. The model is elegant ans comfortable in my hands. Now I enjoy the system so much I wonder about 3D. The lesson : buy and discover consoles WHILE they are manufactured, not 4 years after they are replaced!! Oh yes, and don't listen to the Internet... Get the gadget with its key features... 😤
I've ended up coming around to the New 2DS XL. It's still not my favorite, but it's not as bad as I made it out to be in this video. I prefer the 3D effect turned on. After posting a few of these videos about the 3DS, there have been many people that say they prefer the 3D turned on too. That's surprising because, as you said, it seems like nobody liked the 3D effect. I think we need to take these opinions with a grain of salt. Even if it seems like everybody agrees with one opinion. Do you recommend buying a Japanese 3Ds LL model for cheap? I'd want to region unlock to U.S or some country that speaks English, as I don't want Japanese characters anywhere on my system.. With the eShop gone, is that still hard/worth doing?
@Neander Meander Well it was a nice thought From the looks of it used 3Ds LLs and New 3Ds LLs are going for over $170 each That's an INSANE asking price for a Japanese system, meaning the North American models are going to be $220+ Meh I'll just get a 2Ds for under $100 in my fitting color.. I'm not particularly a DS enthusiast but want to be able to access some of the exclusive titles like Ocarina of Time 3D, New Super Mario Bros 2, and New Super Mario Bros from the DSI Because every other console is easily emulated, whereas the dual screens on the DS screws over the aspect ratio
2DS XL might be the worst model. The plastic on the body feels cheap. The ribbed design on the top has a very awkward texture. Like running your hand against some cardboard.
New 3ds is the best. Its has all the upgrades of the new 3ds/2ds xl but keeps the smaller, more pocketable form factor. New 2ds xl is a close 2nd though. Also, most ppl got bad headaches/migraines due to the 3d so ppl either keep 3d off or just decide to get a new 2ds xl.
I love the smaller side if the anew 3DS. I did another video talking about the New 2DS XL. It’s a nice little handheld. I’m not sure about your migraine and headache comment. Was there a study done on it? I haven’t heard from anyone one I know that suffered from them. I think people just didn’t care for the effect. Though, if they did have migraines and headaches I can see why they didn’t use the 3D effect.
i got the controller grip for the new 2ds xl and its amazing. ill never use a ds without the controller again. the grip actually makes the speaker audio go right to my face also. (instead of down)
My biggest issue with the 2DS XL isn't the lack of 3D but rather the durability and repairability of the console. The 2DS XL is much more difficult to do maintenance or repairs on than a new 3DS or new 3DS XL which is important for me because I like to know I can fix most of the issues with my console if anything ever goes wrong down the line. If it weren't for that then I would probably have bought a 2DS XL. I wish I could appreciate the 3D effect but I have depth perception issues so I can't see the 3D effect properly unless I focus hard.
The New 2DS XL definitely doesn't feel as solid as the other 3DS consoles. Even the plastic doesn't feel like it's all that high of quality. That one of the reasons I prefer the New 3DS XL as well.
I bought most of them brand new from retail stores when they were available. I also have a few used 3DS’s I got from the local classifieds. I find that I can get better deals when they are local and not from places like EBay.
Boom, roasted! Honestly, when I made this video my opinion on it was very weak. I’ve since gone back and made a few more videos looking deeper into the New 2DS XL. You should check those out. Hopefully I don’t come across as a 2DS hater.
I agree that the new 3DS XL is the best and definitive 3DS ever because of alot of upgrades like battery life is 3.5 to 7 hours as the 2DS XL battery life is 3.5 to 6.5 hours. Both the new 3DS and new 3DS XL have auto brightness which is great as the new 2DS XL doesn’t which is unfortunate but the new 2DS XL is still a good system as the only dislike was the top screen being too thin and easy to break compared to all the other 3DS models. I still love my new 3DS XL!
My issue with the New 2DS XL is not the lack of 3D or the speaker placement, but rather the fact that it is less durable and harder to repair. It's built more cheaply with a weaker hinge, thinner plastic and thinner screens, and it is not designed to be modular and repair friendly like the New 3DS or New 3DS XL. Though I do like that it's lighter and smaller than the New 3DS XL while having bigger screens, and the SD card slot being located near the cartridge slot instead of under the backplate.
I've heard from others that it's difficult to repair. That's too bad. The quality of materials is also lesser on it. You can tell immediately when you pick it up that it's not as robust as all the other 3DS and 2DS consoles. I know that there are super fans of the New 2DS XL. I like all those things you mentioned and it's really comfortable to use. But I can't back it as my favorite.

You are too harsh on New 2DS XL. The reason why New 2DS XL is the definitive handle console for 3DS games because 3D is a gimmick, a trend. And in 2021, 3D is dead. Yes, there are a few games require 3D, but in a few section, that's it. Yes, New 2DS might have some questionable design choice, but it also come with cheaper price.
I respect your opinion, I’m glad you’ve formed your own opinion, but I’m going to have to disagree. I probably shouldn’t have been so harsh on the New 2DS XL, but there’s no going back now. The videos been up for quite a while. However, there no way anybody will talk me into thinking the New 2DS XL is the definitive 3DS. Just because it’s cheaper doesn’t mean it’s definitive. That just means it’s more affordable. It’s a great handheld. I own 3 of them. If I didn’t like it I wouldn’t have purchased multiples. I have experience with every 3DS model. In my opinion, the New 3DS XL and the New 3DS are the top of the class.
Imo the definitive one is citra where you can upscale to 4x. Now to the n2dsxl, its definitive because it’s a smaller modern form factor without sacrificing the graphics. 3d is not the future of gaming, the switch already proved that. So arguing about missing the 3d is moot if no one uses them. I can only do 3d for 10mins and I don’t want to tinker with the slider every cutscene. The form factor is really good with n2dsxl vs the n3dsxl which is heavier. And the design is fit for modern gadgets. The seamless top screen makes it more immersive. Now i ask you, do you prefer 3d or a 4x upscale on an oled screen? If it’s the latter then 3d is not as important of a criteria to be called definitive.
I’m looking into importing a Japanese 3ds or New 3ds and hacking it that way it’s region free. I want a 3ds for the long term to play specifically my physical library. Which model would you recommend?

I have the “New” 2DS Xl and man do I love it. I was never really a fan of the 3DS and I wanted to be different compared to all of my other friends, so that’s mainly why I got it. That little “dust cover” at the bottom is actually one of my favorite little features to it. Idk why, but when I would play on my DS or 2DS, I’d always manage to pop the games out mid game and then have to go through the process of regaining all of my progress again. This little dust cover on the New 2DS Xl keeps it so I don’t accidentally fling my games out. Although, the only thing I can say that I dislike about the New 2DS Xl is the stupid small stylus lol

@@jaguar4120 I think it's best explained as feeling delicate. It feels like it's gonna break every time I open the hinge. Not just the feel either, the top screen have been known to fall out, because they're held in just by glue, as opposed to the other models, which are secured in by screws. It's a shame really, I love the form factor of the device, and the easy access to the sd card and the dust cover are quite neat. I would pay good money for a high quality New 2DS XL.
A few things. Nintendo's 2DS original was literally for kids. There were a lot of complaints about the durability of the consoles in lieu of children, so that was their response. A cheap, easy to use version that a 6~12 year old can use without worrying about destroying it, or damaging the 3D button due to being careless in how hard it was pushed up or down or how often.
Nintendo never took off the 3D for the original 2DS for any other reason than that.
However, for the New 2DS XL, they removed the 3D as they had lost a lawsuit and had to pay royalties for every 3DS/N3DS unit sold.
The original 2DS is definitely made for kids. I have a few, and they seem very durable. I haven't tested them though.

I own the new 2ds xl. I love it, the reason I got that particular model is because I owned a 3ds years before but never liked the actual 3D, it messes with my eyes on longer runs, but with the new 2ds I have the c stick. That plus it’s price point point was amazing for the large library by the time I wanted to go back to it. I picked it up for 100$ brand new. One of my favorite games is Metal Gear Solid 3D. I live for MGS and I think the 3ds version of 3 is the best version. It was the perfect model of 3ds for me. The 3D feature would never be used by me anyway.
No doubt the New 2DS XL is a good console. I actually went back and revisited this topic for another video. I liked playing games on it. To be honest, if you're playing 3DS games, I don't really care how anybody does it.

I get that the new 2ds xl is not a good console to represent the 3ds, but i would say that it is the most efficient, it's comfortable, has better processing power that the older ones, and can play all the games that require a C-Stick! so i get that it is not a good system to bear the name of "Best 3ds console", but I believe that it is one of the best ways to play.

i used to have all 3ds models but tbh i didnt like the New 2Ds XL it didnt feel right in my hands and it was kinda sharp on the edges i think the original 2ds is one of the best i also love the New 3Ds XL but my personal fav is the launch mod i have it in pink and it looks so pretty and its also very small its the same size as my iphone so i can put it in my pocket and forget about it also is the most comfortable to hold for some reason and bcs of the size it has by far the most sharp screen from all the models in the new 3ds XL i can really see the pixels and it doesnt look that good especially in pixel art games

Even though I have yet to use it, I feel like the New 2DS XL is the best model. Why do I think it is the best? It has a larger screen similar to the XL models, it has the better processing power of the New systems, and it has dust cover for the cartridge and micro SD slot (this will help reduce the dust from entering the system). Most importantly, the micro SD is easily accessible, there is no need to unscrew the system's cover just to get the micro SD anymore. I know that the MSRP was cheaper for a brand new New 2DS XL, but I'm not sure by how much.
There is no reason for me to use the New 3DS XL just because it has 3D, especially since I never use the 3D feature. Of course, the best 2DS/3DS console to buy is subjective and it depends on the person. Some prefer the smaller screen size of the old 2DS/3DS, some prefer the form factor of the old 2DS, some prefer the larger screens of the XL models, some prefer the screen size on the New 3DS, some prefer having 2 bigger shoulder buttons instead of 4 smaller ones, and so on. I personally would've preferred if the system has the shape of the old 2DS over the clamshell design, it would be more comfortable to hold, and I don't have to worry about the hinges.
Sounds like you have given this a good deal of thought. Having bought two New 2DS XL consoles, I’ll say that it’s not a bad handheld at all. I even revisited this topic in a video I made this year. I love playing games on it. It does have cheaper feeling plastic and lacks the 3D effect. Those are the two reasons I don’t prefer it. But, if you don’t like the 3D effect and you don’t mind how if feels, I’d say go for it! You can’t go wrong getting a console that plays 3DS games.

The New 3DS XL is definitely better since it has 3D, and the unscrewing off the case just to get to the SD card isn't a big deal, especially since most consumers will rarely ever remove their SD card (and some never did even after a few years of owning the system).
I have Old 3ds xl, new 3ds xl and new 2ds xl and prefear to use 2ds. It's lighter, more ergonomic form for me and i not fan of 3d effect even on new 3ds

I love the original 3DS. It looks great in person. But it is older and runs slower. If it were me, I would stick to the New 3DS and New 3DS XL. Those are fast and can play games in 3D and 2D. they at least give you the option for both play styles.

Nintendo 3Ds is absolute top notch of consoles from Nintendo. It was console changer in 2011-2012 with the 3DS Effect. I remember when i got my first New 3DS (Basic size) in 2016 when i had saved enough money as student. And i was thrilled and spent months and months playing only on 3DS and almost forgot about my high End PC. :D
Then year ago i bought also used 3DS XL (non NEW) and i love the bigger screen for games like Story of Seasons (Which does have portraits for characters) and Rune Factory 4.
Also the possibility you can play on 3DS SNES, NES, GBA, NDS, some N64 games is amazing! If you homebrew it. Sooo amazing console. I still play on it time to time when i feel overburned from Nintendo Switch or either from PC. It's really super console and the lifespan of hardware is timeless. (My friend still have DS Console from 2004 and its working like new, just amazing, if someone tells me Nintendo is not quality product then ya know xD)

A bit harsh on that New Nintendo 2DS XL and those who desired it. Besides it being the swan song for the 3DS line, it was an answer to the fans of the original 2DS, who didn't get an XL version or even an official Circle Pro for 2DS. Frankly, early into the 3DS line, Nintendo pretty much demanded that all 3DS games be developed to be played without turning on 3D to begin with, so to say all of the games were intended for 3D is unfortunately not accurate in this case. Had the original 3DS had the face tracking ability of the New 3DS in 2011, then I believe that 3D would have been treated seriously and not just as a gimmick. Yes, I know a handful of titles are best played in 3D, but the majority make no difference unfortunately. I don't disagree that the New Nintendo 3DS XL is the better option for the word definitive to be crowned upon it, but treating the New Nintendo 2DS XL that way is unfair to those adults with vision issues that desired a version that was more premium than the 2DS.
Yeah the 3D is ok at best. I turn it on for a few minutes and it just feels weird for my eyes. Even on the 'new' 3DS XL the 3D is far from perfect.
I’m not sure how I missed this comment for over a month but I’m glad I’m finally seeing it. To be honest, I didn’t know such a device was desired, and I don’t intend for that to sound mean. Every 3DS has the ability to turn off the 3D, making every model a 2DS. My apologies to anyone who I unintentionally hurt by my critique of the New 2DS XL. The 2ds xl is kinda a weird console bc it’s not a great value like the old 2ds and is more fragile than the old 2ds. It also has a tiny stylus and has the cameras underneath the screen, plus the speakers are on the area where your palm is instead of on the right and left of the touch screen like a normal ds console

The cartridge cover was a great idea. Unfortunately they put it on a version that lacks features. Though, if you haven't seen the followup to this video, I have come around to the New 2DS XL. I really put some hours into playing games on it and it turns out it's not as bad as I was making it out to be.

A couple of things about the "New" 2ds xl, the model has a couple of really good and really shit things you didn't really mention in the video, the flap is quite useful as it prevents gamecarts from ejecting in your pocket (RIP my copy of pokemon moon I saved up for for months then lost within a week) and it also contains the sim card slot making it a lot easier to remove than on the other models where you need to open the system up, the system is a lot lighter while still having the 2 large screens while also being smaller in the pocket, the speakers don't really matter all that much if you're playing out and about as you'll have headphones or just play without sound (if you have any decency of course), and the 2d screens are not all that important if you're planning on modding the console since obviously gameboy games and retro console games dont need 3d making it probably the definitive system for modding taking everything else into consideration. Now for the bad. The system is a lot harder to repair and hard-mod than the 3ds system, some examples include: the battery being glued in as opposed to removable, the c-stick being much harder to remove, and the shoulder buttons being soldered to the board as opposed to the new 3ds xl where they're just connected by ribbon cables. The stylus is tiny and while that can be rectified by just buying a telescoping one off of ebay or something, it's still not ideal, the battery is slightly smaller so you should probably carry around a portable charger if you plan on playing a lot without access to a wall plug such as on a long train ride or a camping trip, it's made out of noticeably cheaper materials, and the top screen has a tendency to crack fairly easily.
Overall, it's the perfect system for modders or really anyone who doesn't care for the 3d effect, but it's not like it's one or the other, well, with these prices maybe it is, but once it dies down a bit you could literally just get both, use the 3ds at home and the 2ds out and about perhaps?

So the 2ds lx build is that bad? So the screen is cheaply built to the point they crack easily? That right there is a big red flag not to get the system.
The faster processing power, face-tracking 3D, changeable faceplates, mat finish, and portability make the regular New 3DS my personal favorite out of all of them. The only issue is having to unscrew the back faceplate every time I want to access the SD card (which your gonna have to do a lot if you homebrew your system like I do).
I really like the New 3DS too! The smaller size is great. Having to unscrew the back isn’t ideal. I wonder if Nintendo designed it that way to deter modding.

In my opinion if you don't play with the 3D on, you are seriously missing out on the full experience. I know some people complained about eye strain on the OG model, but the Eye Tracking on the "New" 3DS Model is amazing.

I haven't watch the video but I'm gonna say the original 2DS is the best one, is just as powerfull, cheaper and more comfortable to actually use, perfect for Smash, and Zelda.
There are many people who prefer the original 2DS over all the other models. I think it's great! The more time I spend on each of the 3DS variants, the more I come to appreciate them all.

The standard size New 3DS is the best model. The screen isn't too big, so the picture doesn't get stretched out on 3DS and DS games. Add in the customization of the plates, and it's a no brainer.

Here in 2023 when prices are insane. I purchased an original 3DSXL in near mint condition and it’s been absolutely perfect. Performs perfectly for 3ds, nds, and GBA games.
I kept feeling like I was missing out on the new 3DSXL because of the extra stick and face tracking. I purchased one in good condition but to be honest, the build quality on my 3DSXL feels better to me. I think it’s because of the metallic finish.
Also, because of the metallic paint on the US newXLs, it’s very hard to find one in good looking condition without paying the price of a PS5 digital edition, or importing one and installing CFW.
To those still looking, highly recommend a good condition 3DSXL in 2023, if you are just focusing on 1st party nintendo games.

There are so many editions, I can imagine people getting confused. I was following Nintendo very closely during the 3DS era. I was aware of all the different models when they released. If I hadn't, it would have difficult to know the differences.

Yeah, I'm not shelling out 500+ for a used special edition. 3DS pricing is so far off from what the consoles are worth. At most, they are worth what they retailed for. If someone is paying more then they need to reevaluate their priorities.

Got a 2DS XL in 2021 (!) as a foray into Nintendo (Switch games are too expensive for the beginner dabbler). The INTERNET convinced me that no one uses the 3D and it wasn't worth the extra weight and premium price. For a newbie, the 2DS XL is light, flat, ergonomic and a great way to get to know Nintendo gaming. The model is elegant ans comfortable in my hands. Now I enjoy the system so much I wonder about 3D. The lesson : buy and discover consoles WHILE they are manufactured, not 4 years after they are replaced!! Oh yes, and don't listen to the Internet... Get the gadget with its key features... 😤
I've ended up coming around to the New 2DS XL. It's still not my favorite, but it's not as bad as I made it out to be in this video. I prefer the 3D effect turned on. After posting a few of these videos about the 3DS, there have been many people that say they prefer the 3D turned on too. That's surprising because, as you said, it seems like nobody liked the 3D effect. I think we need to take these opinions with a grain of salt. Even if it seems like everybody agrees with one opinion. Do you recommend buying a Japanese 3Ds LL model for cheap? I'd want to region unlock to U.S or some country that speaks English, as I don't want Japanese characters anywhere on my system.. With the eShop gone, is that still hard/worth doing?
I think it’s a great idea! They are less expensive and easily modded. I’ve been looking into myself. I want an all white LL.

That's an INSANE asking price for a Japanese system, meaning the North American models are going to be $220+
Meh I'll just get a 2Ds for under $100 in my fitting color.. I'm not particularly a DS enthusiast but want to be able to access some of the exclusive titles like Ocarina of Time 3D, New Super Mario Bros 2, and New Super Mario Bros from the DSI

2DS XL might be the worst model. The plastic on the body feels cheap. The ribbed design on the top has a very awkward texture. Like running your hand against some cardboard.
Yeah, the plastic really does feel cheap. When you pick it up, you can tell that it was meant to be the budget option.

New 3ds is the best. Its has all the upgrades of the new 3ds/2ds xl but keeps the smaller, more pocketable form factor. New 2ds xl is a close 2nd though. Also, most ppl got bad headaches/migraines due to the 3d so ppl either keep 3d off or just decide to get a new 2ds xl.
I love the smaller side if the anew 3DS. I did another video talking about the New 2DS XL. It’s a nice little handheld. I’m not sure about your migraine and headache comment. Was there a study done on it? I haven’t heard from anyone one I know that suffered from them. I think people just didn’t care for the effect. Though, if they did have migraines and headaches I can see why they didn’t use the 3D effect.
The original 2ds is just better though and has better design

That's true. The 3DS is no longer being produced. But some of the games for it are timeless.
i got the controller grip for the new 2ds xl and its amazing. ill never use a ds without the controller again. the grip actually makes the speaker audio go right to my face also. (instead of down)

My biggest issue with the 2DS XL isn't the lack of 3D but rather the durability and repairability of the console. The 2DS XL is much more difficult to do maintenance or repairs on than a new 3DS or new 3DS XL which is important for me because I like to know I can fix most of the issues with my console if anything ever goes wrong down the line.
If it weren't for that then I would probably have bought a 2DS XL. I wish I could appreciate the 3D effect but I have depth perception issues so I can't see the 3D effect properly unless I focus hard.
The New 2DS XL definitely doesn't feel as solid as the other 3DS consoles. Even the plastic doesn't feel like it's all that high of quality. That one of the reasons I prefer the New 3DS XL as well.

The “new” exclusives are better off played in a different console so you’re not losing much with the old besides lesser snes emulation

I bought most of them brand new from retail stores when they were available. I also have a few used 3DS’s I got from the local classifieds. I find that I can get better deals when they are local and not from places like EBay.

I agree that the new 3DS XL is the best and definitive 3DS ever because of alot of upgrades like battery life is 3.5 to 7 hours as the 2DS XL battery life is 3.5 to 6.5 hours. Both the new 3DS and new 3DS XL have auto brightness which is great as the new 2DS XL doesn’t which is unfortunate but the new 2DS XL is still a good system as the only dislike was the top screen being too thin and easy to break compared to all the other 3DS models. I still love my new 3DS XL!

The answer is simple. New 3ds XL. Everything else is just inferior. The new 2ds is far too flimsy.
The New 3DS XL is absolutely the best
My issue with the New 2DS XL is not the lack of 3D or the speaker placement, but rather the fact that it is less durable and harder to repair. It's built more cheaply with a weaker hinge, thinner plastic and thinner screens, and it is not designed to be modular and repair friendly like the New 3DS or New 3DS XL.
Though I do like that it's lighter and smaller than the New 3DS XL while having bigger screens, and the SD card slot being located near the cartridge slot instead of under the backplate.
I've heard from others that it's difficult to repair. That's too bad. The quality of materials is also lesser on it. You can tell immediately when you pick it up that it's not as robust as all the other 3DS and 2DS consoles. I know that there are super fans of the New 2DS XL. I like all those things you mentioned and it's really comfortable to use. But I can't back it as my favorite.

The other thing is that the New 2DS XL can't have IPS displays while the New 3DS models can and I already own a dual IPS New 3DS XL so it would be another downgrade for me
You are too harsh on New 2DS XL. The reason why New 2DS XL is the definitive handle console for 3DS games because 3D is a gimmick, a trend. And in 2021, 3D is dead. Yes, there are a few games require 3D, but in a few section, that's it. Yes, New 2DS might have some questionable design choice, but it also come with cheaper price.
I respect your opinion, I’m glad you’ve formed your own opinion, but I’m going to have to disagree. I probably shouldn’t have been so harsh on the New 2DS XL, but there’s no going back now. The videos been up for quite a while. However, there no way anybody will talk me into thinking the New 2DS XL is the definitive 3DS. Just because it’s cheaper doesn’t mean it’s definitive. That just means it’s more affordable. It’s a great handheld. I own 3 of them. If I didn’t like it I wouldn’t have purchased multiples. I have experience with every 3DS model. In my opinion, the New 3DS XL and the New 3DS are the top of the class.
Imo the definitive one is citra where you can upscale to 4x. Now to the n2dsxl, its definitive because it’s a smaller modern form factor without sacrificing the graphics. 3d is not the future of gaming, the switch already proved that. So arguing about missing the 3d is moot if no one uses them. I can only do 3d for 10mins and I don’t want to tinker with the slider every cutscene. The form factor is really good with n2dsxl vs the n3dsxl which is heavier. And the design is fit for modern gadgets. The seamless top screen makes it more immersive. Now i ask you, do you prefer 3d or a 4x upscale on an oled screen? If it’s the latter then 3d is not as important of a criteria to be called definitive.

I would say the New 3DS or the New 3DS XL/LL. They have the best performance with all the features. I hope this helps
