✷ Hear my thoughts on the brand new Cyberpunk RED Core Rulebook from R. Talsorian Games! This rulebook released on November 19, 2020.
► Cyberpunk RED is the next edition of the Cyberpunk TTRPG (pen & paper game) from designer Mike Pondsmith & all of R. Talsorian Games. This new edition is a 'sequel' to Cybperunk 2020 and a 'prequel' to Cyberpunk 2077 (from CD Projekt Red). So basically, this game takes place in between the two in the year 2045, or the TIME OF RED.

This is late but honestly this is probably the best breakdown of getting into Red that I've seen. Most don't really give good examples or go too indepth with the physical media or character creation and opt more for the roleplaying aspect and prior knowledge of ttrpgs. It's nice to see someone really show the game for newcomers and those getting into Cyberpunk
Thanks for this, it's the only guide I could find where someone actually goes down the entire character sheet and shows how to fill one out. Very much appreciated.
I remember when my bro introduced me to the first Cyberpunk, I had done a lot of different types of RPGS at the time but the idea of playing a game set in a blade runner universe or the Neuromancer book by Gibson was not really something I was saw coming around the corner. It grabbed you by your nose hairs and really forced you to pay attention lol.
I honestly think if you really want to get the right cyberpunk feel for a game, read the Gibson Sprawl Trilogy. The grandfather of Cyberpunk should not be forgotten.
Best cyberpunk movies imho:
1. Blade Runner 1 and 2
2. Johnny Mnemonic (this is really the bar)
3. Alita
4. Total Recall
5. Robo Cop
6. Free Jack
The television series Max Headroom and the British telefilm if the same name is freaking great Cyberpunk fodder, particularly for Media and Netrunnner characters. The Bubblegum Crisis and Bubblegum Crash anime series are both excellent as well.
They ripped off alita, better read the original

25 years ago when i started playing CP2020 i would have never imagined any sort of revival like this
I was a Shadowrun guy, never played CP2020. It's funny how these games have progressed. Especially DnD 5E. When I was younger, I'd be called a nerd for playing. Nowadays, geek is mainstream ! Love it !
The Red Core Rulebook is a work of art compared to what Catalyst has done with my Shadowrun. Shadowrun is still my go-to for lore, and their freelance writers are amazing. Catalyst just can't make a viable product. Hoping someone picks up the Shadowrun IP.
I love both games.

I haven't been playing it as long as you but I definitely played cyberpunk 2020 before there was any talk of CD project red doing a game.
Ever since I was a little kid and I first watched blade runner and first heard that tears In The rain speech. I was hooked by the very concept of the cyberpunk genre. And forever became a philosophy nut who grew into a realist that much like the cyberpunk genre laughs in the face of the very idea of transhumanism that we can transcend our human nature. Lol.
I too am really happy that they did a revival. And I too am really happy at all the popularity cyberpunk is getting. Given the state of the world right now and the influence that a lot of companies do think they have a right to. The genre is more relevant than it has ever been before and I'm all for it.
Hey all! So I was still pretty new to character creation when making this video, and I noticed a few mistakes:
- Character Role Ability starts at RANK 4 for new characters (not 1)
- DONT FORGET to add your humanity loss to your current humanity after adding in all of your Cyberware!! I forgot to do it here :)
(I've built quite a few more characters since making this video...hehe)
Also - I've finally been able to create a few characters with the COMPLETE PACKAGE method. It's actually not too difficult to go with the stat pool given, then spend money on gear/cyberware based on the amount of eb the character creation gives you. I would still recommend you build with someone who might already have some experience with it as there are some things that can be a bit confusing!

Just something to point out, since I was initially confused about the Family Background/Childhood Environment thing too. Family Background usually refers to your character's parents, or their family before your character was born. Childhood environment deals with how they spent their early years.
So in the case of rolling Combat Zoners and "In a Nomad pack with roots in transport" you might flesh that out by saying that your character's parents grew up in the Combat Zone, fell in love and got married there. But when you character's mother accidentally (but happily) got pregnant their parents realized that it would be too dangerous to stay. Their father had worked as a low level fence in the Zone, moving contraband in and out, so he had some contacts with a few Nomads, and one night under cover of darkness he smuggled himself and your character's mother out of the Zone. Your character was born a few months later, and they've been traveling with the Nomads ever since.
That's also what I understood :) It's very interesting to develop the background from what we chose/rolled :)
Rolling Lifepaths is fun. In a 2020 campaign my Rocker rolled 8 life events and against all probability got Happy Love Affair 4 times. So we decided it was the same person through the years and I had a long term committed partner. That opened up all kinds of story possibilities latter on.
That is so cool - I love the different story ideas that can be thought up when rolling the Lifepath. Great idea
Don’t know if anyone in the comments has already made this suggestion, but, Nueromancer is a novel by author William Gibson that kind of helped generate IPs like cyberpunk and Shadowrun. I highly recommend giving it a read.
FYI, If you're looking for the PDFs of the 2020 books Humble Bundle has a package. So, you know, legal and charities. It includes the jumpstart for Red as well.

I love the lore of Cyberpunk, butit is dated to a 1980s idea of the future and the system itself always gave me hang-ups.
I have a goal to expand on the universe and to bring small improvements to character creation freedom, while keeping the fantasy alive.
Stuff like Cellphones, but also bring in some of the more amazing discoveries in robotics that happened in the last couple of years.

Cyberpunk got the Lifepath from the original Traveller RPG, if you like that mechanic/feature, check that one out too especially if you like Sci-Fi/Space Opera.

Thank you so much for this video! It was very helpful! I just recently bought the pdf (sadly the print version is still soldout). While I love the character creation, I found it to be a bit overwhelming especially when it came to figuring out the stats and skills. Your video really simplified it and made it easier to understand! I hope you do more Cyberpunk Red content in the future :)
You really should go for the complete package. That way you get a run over of all the systems and how they work. You can make a character using that in a couple of hours. Also all the other methods take away your agency and force your character into a template format. Who wants that?
Also discovered this video late, but I stumbled upon you from your roll20 cyberpunk walkthrough, and then clicked on your channel. I too am a avid Cyberpunk 2077 fan and I have been reading the RED ruleset. Love everything about it and the Net Architecture breakdown is pretty cool (even bought the netrunning deck). It is hard to find people interested in the ruleset in my area, but I am still working on drumming up interest. Fun fact the GOG version of 2077 I bought came with a free PDF of the 2020 ruleset embedded in the game files.
I just binged Cyberpunk Edgerunners, and this video convinced me to get the core book. Keep making these videos, because you're really good at it.

@@MissMagitek thanks, I'll need it. I'm going to DM, and I've not done it for years, but I have a lot of ideas and a fair bit of my own personal experience to throw at it so fingers crossed it will amount to some sort of barely legible experience for my players.
Can you recommend any good guides for building each individual class?
I always thought 2020 was overly chunky for most gamers, which is why it died out in the 90s. It sounds like Red has cut it back enough to make it approachable--much of the design reminds me of Chaosium's Call of Cthulhu (specifically the 5th editions & beyond). I'll be curious to see reviews from players, as R. Talsorian's Witcher RPG was generally panned and it was heavily based on Cyberpunk's design elements (of course, they have lessons learned from that for Red).
I hope that you actually got to play that character. As you rolled her, I realized that she was a "former"(?) member of the Blood Razors trying to make good.
At least as a long time CP referee/GM, that's what I would have suggested.
I love the promise Cyberpunk makes with its art and descriptions, but when the majority of the game’s mechanics concerns combat, I don’t really feel like I can live in that world as much as I’d like. I think I really want something like The Veil or The Sprawl, but less mission-focused and more focused on relationship building and intrigue 🤔
And of course, cold hard chrome 🤖

I built a pretty memorial Media character called Joshua, handle 'Black Lion'. He was previously a US soldier but came home and joined a govt Corp called META Comms which is essentially a propaganda house that controls info and spies on Americans, fabricating scandals and blackmailing folks using deepfake pron-ography ;). Josh makes war movies to help distract people from politics and has everyone in America convinced that he‘s the hottest killer since Rambo and all his deeds are real (hence, great street rep). He began his story when another Corpo at Comms, named Jia Ling, kicked him out of the Director spot and takes over Comms. Josh, along with my girlfriend who chose to be a Netrunner named Xi, fought his way out of the streets and took down META Comms which he realized had become completely corrupt, obsolete and tyrannical.
A little convoluted but it was a great campaign.

CP2020 was the first P&P game I ever played back in.. ummm -99? Love at first sight/read. Can't wait to see what the new version looks like.. hope they don't change the system too much maybe a little streamlined would be good 🙂

Combat has been changed. You can't kill anybody with a pistol, you can't kill typical player with an assault rifle (wearing a helmet). To hit somebody with full auto in close quarters is so difficult, it pointless to look for cover.
It is a game of storytelling now. Just like many new age games now.

Depends on what else you're looking for! The PDF is the core rulebook, which really has everything you could need for Cyberpunk RED thusfar.
There are also some great resources on reddit - I've found the r/cyberpunkred subreddit very helpful. I would also follow R. Talsorian Games' website/twitter - they also post a lot of helpful stuff!

I've just started buying up RED and 2020 books after enjoying 2077! This was good filler to make sure I'm doing the character creation in the right path!

Ive been curious about ttrpg for a bit since Ive been exposed to the 2077 video game but the books dont seem to be available locally in my country. Importing the thing jacks up the price close to 100usd. Pretty unfortunate
You only need the digital copy. If you haven't played any TTRPGs before, this is a good one to get your feet wet. Basically, read the PDF, make a character and then find an online friend. Play one Gamemaster / One player. Experiment and have some fun. Don't let the rules get in the way of fun. Just enjoy learning together. This works for ANY TTRPG.

Complete package would not take days to complete. Maybe 45 minutes tops
I just did it with a group recently and it took us a few hours to complete. 😅 Think it depends on how well-versed you are in Cyberpunk character creation. Took me some time to decide what to spend on stat points buy / gear buy / Cyberware. Maybe not days, but certainly dumping a lot of time into it.
