    Michael McDonald recruited some of the greatest LA session musicians of that era on his debut solo album "If That's What it Takes" like Jeff Porcaro, Louis Johnson, Steve Lukather, and Greg Phillinganes.

    OK, let's get into some music and compositional theory for "why this sounds good"...
    First, let's take the bassline. We're in key of G, but in the minor scale, so focusing on the E as the root. Then bar 9, we move to the C (the 4th of a G maj, or 6th of E minor) via B, setting up the basic hopeful but minor-based feel of the song. We stay on that until bar 14, where we have a funky little movement for the next seven bars, hitting the G, which is the root, the octave E over the root and then moving back to the initial low E. So from a bass perspective, we've got a funky minor groove, which plays off the 6th to give a funky, different the feel.
    Then we get the verse guitar part. Again, we're only playing with two notes really, in this case the E and D (in E minor the root and minor 7th, in G the minor 6th and 5th), so we get this minor feel over the E root of the bass. But when the bass moves to the C as the root, with those two notes playing over the top of a C we get the D, which is the suspended second, and the E which is the major 3rd. So through the use of the movement in the bass, and the mostly static two notes on the guitar, we're getting chord tones, which are somewhat more funky and interesting than your standard pop song.
    If you head back far enough, you can see similar things in plainsong, back in the 15th century, with a drone note being played, and a melody moving over the top, to create basic two note chords. You get a lot of the same thing with folk music. For instance, if you look at the bagpipes or uilleann (pronounced ill-an) pipes, you get a similar thing. The drone notes (played by the chanter pipes, after the chanters, who would sing the drone in plainsong music) set the stage, whilst the melody gives the feel. So if you listen to something like this th-cam.com/video/P40YOU8ggJk/w-d-xo.html by Catherine Ashcroft & Maurice Dickson, the same melodic techniques from thatsort of folk root, are the same as in a lot of soul and funk like this.
    Moving to the chorus, we move to the G, which resovles the minor of the E into the more hopeful major key root. That moves between the G and the A, again highlighting that suspended second feeling, although this time against the G, rather than the C-D we had earlier. The rest of the song keeps hitting the same things, to keep that groove and feeling going.
    So from a compositional perspective, the reason this is good is a focus on creating a sound through a few simple melodic tricks, which everything plays to and builds on through having simple chords which emphasise the suspended, minor and major changes. But because that's not being done through actual chords through most of the song, it's compositionally minimalist. So the only way to get that feel is by designing the melodic lines in the guitar, vocals and bass to work together to build that feel.
    Some other people who use the same trick are Bach and his contemporaries, where you can hear a comlex version of this in something like the Goldberg Variations BWV 988 Aria. We see the same technique of a simple bassline with relatively simple melody over the top, creating chord tones and a beautiful, simple piece of music.

    Everytime I see you smile
    Hear your "hello"
    Saying you can only stay a while
    Hey, I know that it's hard for you
    To say the things that we both know are true
    But tell me how come

    I keep forgettin' how you made that so clear
    I keep forgettin'
    Everytime I hear
    How you never want to live a lie
    How it's gone too far
    And you don't have to tell me why
    Why you're gone and the game is through
    If this is what's real, if this is what's true
    Tell me how come
    I keep…

    This song was on the radio all the time. I would say when I was in my early teens, I never really thought much of this song. Maybe because the song was like a top 40 song, and I preferred songs more with an edge. Today I can certainly appreciate the song more from a musicianship pov. However, I'm at about 3.7 for the song. If you boys like this you'll like the Doobie Brothers. Manny you should check out the song "Listen to the Music". The reason I'm suggesting this song, is to check out the intro guitar riff with the "hammer on" to create the funky groove. Sort of reminded me of what you were doing when you played the guitar on an earlier vid.

  • @JeromeDukes
    @JeromeDukes 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    In regards to sampling. I think it started more with DJs mixing songs back in the day at dance clubs. I think the power of the synth, to artificially produce grooves and sounds, allowed people to experiment and create music. This may be the smoking gun because, now you can create music without really knowing how to play an instrument from your very own home studio. So it really comes down to technology and software that has made people dumber (for a lack of a better word) I guess.

    • @jpmp1201
      @jpmp1201  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Precisely. On one hand people can now express themselves musically a lot easier and without having to put the effort into learning an instrument. But...as we see in modern mainstream music, it also dumbs things down immensely overall.
