Music “Should Be” Color Blind! A child of the 70’s, I can honestly say, I never thought of color.
    A good start with Doobie’s:
    China Grove
    Long Train Running
    Black Water
    Jesus is Just Alright
Taking it to The Streets (McDonald on lead vocals)

:D When scientists finished mapping the Human Genome they found that all human beings share 99.9% of their DNA. That being said, IMHO, the only important differences that exist between one human being and another are the quality of the thoughts that exist between their ears and the spirit of kindness that fills their heart of hearts. :) Nothing else matters.

The guitarist sitting down is none other than Jeff "Skunk" Baxter who really is a rocket scientist and chaired the Civilian Advisory Board for Ballistic Missile Defense in 1995. He has consulting contracts with the Pentagon's Missile Defense Agency and National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency. He consults for the US Department of Defense and the US intelligence community, as well as defense-oriented manufacturers such as Science Applications International Corporation, Northrop Grumman Corp., General Dynamics, and General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Inc.

I always imagine a skit of McDonald pitching this song to the band like it was his coming out as a singer/songwriter starting with the beep beep boop beep boop beep beep boo beep then busting out that growling whisper of a voice and them completely dogging him, then fast forwarding to them 8 deep on stage or however many just barely playing their instruments looking at each other in disbelief as McDonald does his thing with crowds eating it up. The band still in shock as McDonald takes over but provides somehow with the contrast of what the band sounded like before with the songs you mentioned above has to be one of the most extreme transitions ever. McDonald is undeniable but arguably the antithesis of the sound of the doobies previously. I refuse to look up the real story keeping my fantasy of how it went down intact.

“What a Fool Believes” is about the guy’s unrequited love for a woman who never saw him as anything but someone she knew from long ago. She was his dream girl, he was just a past acquaintance to her.

The Doobie Brothers were from San Jose, Ca in 1970. Yes DB, the name is taken from the fact that they did enjoy their 'Doobies'. The name started out as a joke but hell it was the 70s.
Tom Johnson was the original lead on most songs but something happened to him. I think he had health issues for awhile. So they got Michael McDonald until Tom eventually came back.
This band has SO many hits through the 70s and 80s. Back in the day you could drop the needle anywhere on their albums and you'd be happy.
I suggest Black Water. It'll give you a totally different reaction. Seriously and Chelsea thinks so too. Lol

If you like Michael McDonald's voice do listen to his duet with PattiLaBelle "On My Own", it cannot be described with words. Also with James Ingram "Yamo Be There". The song is about a guy who mistook a fling for something real and he keeps hoping she will return although they never really had anything, hence the words"trying hard to recreate what had yet to be created" she just gets up and walks away because their "love story" was only ever in his daydreams.

    Great reaction!
That smooth sound is sometimes called blue-eyed soul.
The song is about a guy that harbors fond memories of a romance from the past, but it's all in his head. She was nice to him, but he imagined it was more. He runs into her later in life, fondly reminiscing, but she doesn't recall it that way. She apologizes that she has to go, but he believes in the false idea he has anyway.

This song is reminiscent of like a 20 yr high school reunion where a guy meets a former classmate that he had huge crush on. His memories are fantasies of the place she had in his life, when in reality she hardly knew him and barely even remembers him.

The Doobie Brothers was my first concert. It was July 12, 1979. The stage was covered in doobies from the fans throwing them onto the stage. One of the band members bent down, picked one up, and smoked it immediately. The whole arena was lighting up and smoking. Everywhere you looked, you could see the smoke through the lights. The song is about a guy who believes that the girl has the same feelings for him that he’s had for her all these years. “She had a place in his life. He, never made her think twice. What a fool believes, what he sees, the Wise man has the power to reason away, what he feels to be, is always better than nothing”. This one went to #1 on the charts and won the Doobies a Grammy for Best Song of the Year. Their “Minute by Minute was #1 for 3 weeks on the charts and won a Grammy for “Best Performance by a Group”. They’ve put out 14 Albums. “Listen to the Music”, “Long Train Running”, “Black Water”, “Jesus is Just Alright”, “ I Keep Forgetting”, “ Taking it to the Streets”, they are still Touring in 2024 and selling out Stadiums….. You just did Michael McDonald’s Solo song last week, and this is him with the Doobie Brothers.
Remember the guy with the hair and beard, singing and then he kissed the girl who sang on the song?
McDonald's solo career consists of nine studio albums and a number of singles, including the 1982 hit "I Keep Forgettin' (Every Time You're Near)".
Michael H. McDonald (born February 12, 1952) is an American singer, keyboardist and songwriter known for his distinctive, soulful voice and as a member of Steely Dan (1973-1974), and the Doobie Brothers (1975-1982, 1987, 2019-present). McDonald wrote and sang several hit singles with the Doobie Brothers, including "What a Fool Believes", "Minute by Minute", and "Takin' It to the Streets." McDonald has also performed as a prominent backing vocalist on numerous recordings by artists including Steely Dan, Christopher Cross, and Kenny Loggins.

Written by Kenny Loggins, whose song, "I'm Alright" was the theme in the movie 'Caddy Shack". I only know the Doobie Brothers and Michael McDonald because of my kids, but I liked Loggins and Messina (then just Loggins) when I was in college. "Footloose" is probably at least as recognized even by younger generations because their parents had the VHS tape when they were kids. Thank goodness for children. I'd have missed a lot of music if mine weren't blasting it on their boom boxes.
I think this song is more about the fact that the relationship was over a long time ago, but he never really let go. She means something to him, but he can't see (doesn't want to see) that he never meant much to her. He runs into her somewhere (at a party or something?) and she pretty much ghosts him, but he still thinks somehow it's still on and she'll come back into his life.

There are two types of mic, condenser (delicate used in studios) and dynamic (more rugged, used on stage). That mic looks a bit like a Sennheiser MD4 dynamic mic but not exactly. Who knows, you're going to have to look at historic dynamic mics from the mid 70's through mid 80's to find out for sure. And it is the second type of brother, the no relation type.
If you want to bop, there is nothing better than their Listen to the Music.

You heard the lead singer, Michael McDonald a few days ago with Don. It was his solo song, I Keep Forgetting. Michael has a very unique voice. Hard not to recognize. You won’t be disappointed by The Doobie Brothers catalogue or Michael’s. Thanx. Love, from Oklahoma 🤍
PS-Give Simply Red a go, please. Begin with I Keep Holding On. Also Bobby Caldwell, What You Won’t Do For Love.

No matter what DB's song you listen to, they are all hits! "China Grove" which is describing a small town in Texas that the band went through once while on tour is great song for the next reaction for sure. The Doobies are one of San Francisco's finest rock bands from back in the day..

The mic is most likely a Sennheiser flat-front dynamic mic such as the E609. They're still most commonly used to record electric guitar amps.

Ah, Michael and that blue-eyed soul. Facts. He was on several Steely Dan tracks on background vocals. There's a great interview with him on how difficult it was to do those backing tracks for the Dan. Apparently, it was pretty intense.

This song was co-written by Michael Macdonald (singer) and Kenny Loggins (they both recorded versions). It’s about a guy who gets together with an ex that he completely blew it with and is still so clueless he thinks he still has a chance when she was clear he doesn’t. Professor of Rock has a great episode where he interviews Kenny Loggins (also a legend you might want to react to) about the writing of this song. Kenny and Micheal collab on the amazing This Is It, could Kenny Loggins to start with.

Love the Doobie Brothers ♥️ those of us who were fortunate to have our preteen & teen years in the 70s and young adulthood in the 80s with a booming economy DID have the best of all generations. We got to experience the growth of the music industry after the birth of Rock-n-Roll to what it was in the 60s, how it changed in the 70s living through Disco. And I don’t care what anyone says. I loved disco. There’s nothing better to dance to then disco. But the 70s gave us the best rock ‘n’ roll to now be known as classic rock ‘n’ roll. We had it all in music was every bit a part of it. There was something for however you were feeling. I loved the Pop, the oldies, the crooners Dean Martin Tom Jones, of course Elvis big Elvis fan😁 Big Hair Bands, we had it all. Yes, we’ve had a sweet life.

Michael McDonald had a successful solo career after he left THE DOOBIE BROTHERS, he sang the theme song for a GREGORY HINES and BILLY CRYSTAL movie in the 80's, "RUNNING SCARED" / SWEET FREEDOM
