TheBrandon425 not exactly; if you listen closely, you can hear Micheal’s voice softly echoing throughout the room since his mouth is so close to the microphone. In addition, he sings certain verses at a different tempo and pitch than he did in the original studio recording, which further proves that he and the band are truly singing the song live. It only sounds like lip syncing at first because Michael is one of those rare artists who’s voice sounds just as good live as it does on the radio.
True, lip syncing was used by some bands for select live TV performances back in those days, but they would still play their instruments regardless, and some bands would simply play live for real, even if they sounded different than in the studio. That technique was mostly used by artists who were unsure of the audience’s reaction to them actually playing live, so they would cheat with that, letting the recording cover their voices while they played their instruments live.
Listen to this video and the original recoding side by side, and you’ll hear the differences which set them apart from each other.

It was a big #1 hit for the Doobies in 1979. Written by Michael MDonald (and Kenny Loggins who is not in the group). Great lyrics. Michael McDonald was not the original lead singer of the group. He was brought in to replace singer Tom Johnston who was having health issues. Tom sang their earlier big songs like China Grove, Jesus Is Just Alright, Listen to the music. Eventually Tom came back and is still currently the lead singer of the group. They're about to play the New Orleans Jazz fest this month.

    "What A Fool Believes"
He came from somewhere back in her long ago
    The sentimental fool don't see
    Tryin' hard to recreate
What had yet to be created once in her life
    She musters a smile
    For his nostalgic tale
Never coming near what he wanted to say
    Only to realize
    It never really was
She had a place in his life
He never made her think twice
As he rises to her apology
    Anybody else would surely know
    He's watching her go
But what a fool believes he sees
No wise man has the power to reason away
    What seems to be
    Is always better than nothing
And nothing at all keeps sending him...
Somewhere back in her long ago
Where he can still believe there's a place in her life
    Someday, somewhere, she will return
She had a place in his life
He never made her think twice
As he rises to her apology
    Anybody else would surely know
    He's watching her go
But what a fool believes he sees
No wise man has the power to reason away
    What seems to be
    Is always better than nothing
    There's nothing at all
But what a fool believes he sees...

I’m telling you I could not stop playing this record for such a long time. It just hit me so hard because I love beautiful, rhythmic melodies coupled with tight harmonies and few artists did it better than the Doobie Brothers, and Michael McDonald’s voice is just addictive. I was born in 1980 in Lakewood, Washington and this is the music I grew up with. Used to play on the radio all the time when I was a kid. I don't know why, maybe my Mon's influence, but stuff like Doobie Brothers, Michael McDonald, Lionel Ritchie, Billy Ocean, George Michael, etc. really struck me as the kinda music I would really gravitate towards. Music with soul, harmony, emotion...hard to explain. I love all different types of music from metal, hip hop, techno, soft rock, R&B, jazz...all kinds and from all different countries and artists. But this right here has always stuck with me as my preferred style that I keep going back to.

i believe was 5 years old when this song came out and it made me wonder what he was singing about.
I would always sing along when it was on" typically back then" an am radio station. All i knew then about music was i loved it and that all kinds of it made me feel something. And this particular song at that young age just made me feel really good and happy for some reason. I can remember my mom in the kitchen cooking a big smelly boiling pot of collar greens with the radio on and that song was like sugar to this little boy back then running around the dining room and kitchen in circles singing it with all i had in cut off rustler shorts. Wow i am 51 now and life is so different. But about your channel. Very refreshing.
Once again i am happy i discovered your channel but not just for these reaction videos, "yet it tends to keep me up binge watching two nights in a row now😁" but for all the other playlists as well. Some obviously i have not got to yet. I am looking forward to digging into all of it and was very excited to see you on the panel chat the other night. That's how i discovered your channel, and i hope to see you on them often. Brandon Derrick and ABL are my main news sources. I relate to truth and that is hard to find in mainstream media if at all.
I appreciate what you are doing and how straight forward you are. Keep on keeping on. Having a voice to trust in the medical field is very valuable to many nowadays due to all the fear being projected. Thanks again. Peace.

Written by Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins. They wrote 2 more songs, which ended up with Kenny Loggins singing lead vocal and releasing them under his name. Produced by Ted Templeman. Years later, he produced Sammy Hagar and Van Halen.
MM also sang with Nicollette Larson, Steely Dan in the 1970s. In the 1980s, MM sang on solo albums and with Christopher Cross, late James Ingram, Patti Labelle and Toto.
Not given much publicity. In 1983, Ted Templeman brought in MM to finish writing lyrics. The song was I'll Wait. the credits are as follows: "written by Van Halen and Michael McDonald". This was the lineup from 1978 to 1984: David Lee Roth, late Eddie van Halen, Alex van Halen and Michael Anthony.

Loving the Doobies! Michael McDonald is amazing. Omg, i’ll always remember being intro’d to the Doobies by the show, What’s Happening?! Re-run brought in a tape recorder to bootleg the concert , ha! Memories...

Song was written by Michael McDonald & Kenny Loggins in 1978. And if you don't know who Kenny Loggins is, hit one of his videos. Great rocker. Where was I when the song hit the radio waves? Stationed at Fort Carson turning wrenches on Chinook helicopters at Butts AAF. Doobies are one of my all time favorite bands. Their sound continued growing and moving in slightly different directions and they took chances. Great band.

Keep in mind this is a live performance, not a lip synch. And still not a single note or beat or harmony out of place. That's the kind of talent these guys had. Who on today's Billboard Top 100 comes close to that kind of musicianship?

I do like the earlier Doobie Brothers, but this song brings back some chill memories. I was four-ish and riding around with my parents all the time with this song. It reminds me of rain and windshield wipers.

I have inside info about the guy in the front with the aviator sunglasses and headphones who's sitting with his guitar. Jeff "Skunk" Baxter had grown so tired of the commercial direction the Doobies were heading that he was basically checked out by this time. Skunk was not only refusing to play for this taping, he was actually listening to a Jazz record at the time. Pretty much the modern day equivalent of browsing soundcloud during class.

Michael McDonald is lead singer. But he was backup singer to gobs of artists. This run at the beginning was created by them but was repeated in new wave music and is in tons of songs. Michael is one of the best singer coming out of the 80’s.

Well, this song was released 4 years before I was born, so I don't really remember the first time I ever heard it, but I do remember always loving it.
And although it's basically a "sad" song (about a man who is in love with and thinks he still has a shot with a woman who couldn't care less about him), it always makes me want to dance every time I hear it because the sound is just so damn catchy.

My older brother and I loved the show 'What's Happening' growing up,and hearing this band reminds me of one particular episode.Rerun,DeWayne and Raj were given tickets to see The Doobie Brothers play, but with a catch,..Rerun HAD to sneak in a tape recorder to illegally record the show.😲So while the band started playing a pretty upbeat song,Rerun was jumping around way too much, and the recorder fell out of his coat in full view of everyone at the venue.😅One of my favorite episodes.☺️
