Yes, all my life I've been such a big eater and I eat about 4 times the amount of what my siblings and mom eats, but I am not fat and they are slim. I was never slim in my younger days I was really skinny where my bones would protrude, I have always been muscular somehow and people would always think that I go to the gym rigorously, but I don't even go to the gym and just walk everywhere. If it's 30 minutes walk or less I just walk there, so it gives about an hour or less both ways.

when I asked my French friend how she stays so thin, she answered “mange pas dans le matin” (don’t eat in the morning) and I always see her moving…cooking, cleaning, dancing, walking, working. She never sits. Also, when she does eat, she eats anything, but it is small portions…so equivalent to intermittent fasting, staying active, and watching calorie intake

I think they pump too many growth hormones in the food here in the us. I grew up in the Netherlands, and whenever I visit, I am eating the same amount of food and I lose 10 lbs within a week. Here in the US, I eat the same food, and exercise 5 times a week, and feel bloated and sick and cannot -sorry- go to the bathroom for three days.

Yes, correct. So have compassion on Americans as many have no idea the food is poisoned. About the 1990s we saw a change in our health and foods. The food even fruits and vegetables don't taste the same. But many are trying to educate Americans to be aware. Even our organic grown foods are gased before travel to stores or restaurants.

  • @ronlugbill1400
    @ronlugbill1400 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +172

I used to live in France. Traditionally, French women did their shopping each day for the meals for that day. That way, everything is fresh. Fresh food is more nutritious and tastier. Many Americans have piles of food in the fridge and don't shop with meals in mind. In France, kids were not allowed to raid the fridge. Because everything in the fridge is something that mom planned for meals. So, that means no snacking. A lot of Americans are constantly grazing throughout the day. France does not have the same zoning we do, so there are stores nearby that you can walk to usually. Their traditional towns were designed for walking, not for driving. And they have fewer convenience stores/gas stations than we do, where people buy junk food. The U.S. was more traditional until about 50-60 years ago, but the French have preserved their traditions more, but this is changing and they are starting to eat and act more like Americans.

Love the video, I am from Italy but I live in the US. So this is my take: 30 yrs ago, when I moved to the US, I noticed immediately the portions, the shopping carts, the croissants size, the cappuccino size, the pantries size, the fridges size...I think you get the point.Everything is huge. I remember asking early on my US adventures for "mini" croissants because, and I had to explain it so many times, the croissants I was used to in Italy were half to 1/3 the size of the American ones. Well, I stopped asking because hardly anyone had them.

    • @Ofthegirl09

True to a point; we refrigerate everything and take less frequent trips to the grocery store. As I understand it, in Europe they do not refrigerate beverages, they don't have icemakers which take up a lot of refrigerator room, and they buy fresh meats, breads, etc. daily. But in any city that requires walking instead of driving, you will see slimmer people. I believe frequent, daily walking might be the biggest contributor to staying slim!

    • @ms.frederique
      @ms.frederique  ปีที่แล้ว +38

true the portions in europe are 'normal' if you want to reduce your food intake change the plates' size :)

Same here. 25 years in the US now from the near BeNeLux area in Germany. Portions were and still are mind-blowing. Doggie bags are the usual thing and friends know and give me theirs ( they only get them to give to me🙂). A, a matter of not wasting food and eating what one paid for
B, small portions make a HUGE difference. Ciao from North Texas,👋

I agree the US has gotten worse over the last 30 years. Obesity in children and adults is off the charts. It will be our downfall, if we don’t get away from the huge portions and processed food..❤

    Dont smoke, vape.
Before a celebratory meal, eat light for a few days.
Indukgeht bread ahd psstry based breakfasts are on Sundays, not daily.
Not necessarily sporty, but go to the gym, do pressups etc at home, or other enjoyable sport like swimmimg and diving and dancing.
Living in glamorous cities, public transport and walking (rather than driving) keeps people slim.
Dont weigh daily, measure waist, arms, thighs intermittently.
Another exercise tip... Move for at least twenty minutes a day.
No snacking between meals...do not snsck!
For a sweet craving, have yoghurt.
Ice cream or a full baguette...Do not eat in from of tv and go for a walk afterwards.
Do not keep junk food in the house.
Carbs are ok, but you have to build muscle wuth ecercise if you are going to eat them and burn them off.
    Eat vegetables with every meal.
Poop a lot by eating enough fibre.... At least once a day.
Vinegars and a little olive oil snd lenon juice as salad dressing.
Never drink alcohol on an empty stomach
Eat healthy fats daily avacado oily fish etc
Eat protein daily eg eggs etc
    Exercise after indulging
    Eat at the table
    Drink heaps of water
Not sure you are hungry? Drink water and wait thirty minutes
In supermarket, dont go down junk food Isles... Dont put yhe junk in yhe trolley, dont buy it.
Track what you eat so you are aware and can balance things out.
    Stretch.
    Be consistent in your habits.
Speak to a professional if you are overweight and need help eg dietician, nutritionist, doctor
Keep long term healthy aging in mind.
My comment: it's not hard. What a lot of common sense, thank you. Dont buy crappy foods, eat mindfully, move yoir body often, and sometimes travk what you eat so you can balance overindulgence with other days of eating light and moving more! ( Unfortunately, of you already have disbetes, obesity, prediabetes, you might need a more extreme approach initially to get weoght off). Then maintain like this. Fab video 🙏

Walking “naturally “ is so underrated in the United States. Not sure about other countries. But it makes a HUGE difference. Walking to make groceries, go to parks, see friends nearby. These simple things can be life changing. And went I started eating a combination of 5 servings of fruit and vegetables each day years ago, my whole body felt so sound. Great tips in this video!

I lived in the US for 12 years and struggled to find places to walk due to no sidewalks or living off of a freeway. I used to see groups of walkers walking the shopping malls or around the track of a high school. Now back in Europe I love walking in the countryside and around villages now. I think America is not designed for walking unless you are in a city.

I'm British-Nigerian, and in my Nigerian culture, my goodness...its like "eat eat eat, the fatter the better, the fatter the healthier, the fatter the curvier" and then many Nigerian people suffer from high blood pressure and diabetes. I am 5,7 and weigh like 60kg...I am UK size 8, I am toned and I have no obvious 'fat deposits'. I will eat the sauce on the sauce and the butter on the butter croissant. I will eat EVERYTHING and I will feel like dying from eating, I roll out of the chair. BUT like you said, balance. The next day after eating a lot, I'm not hungry, still like I'm digesting so I won't eat anything - just drink water and herbal tea until I feel empty again (maybe this takes until dinner time the next day). Then I will eat like normal, lots of salad and vegetables (I LOVE salads!). I LOVE to walk and hike. There's no secret diet. It's just, listen to your body, don't restrict and don't overindulge every single day. Thank you for this video!
FYI: Also My husband is Italian - YOU EAT BREAD WITH PASTA, you do the scarpetta!

I recently spent a week visiting family in France, I ate more meals than I eat at home. Drank champagne everyday and ate deserts after every dinner. I was 3 lbs lighter when I got home. Honestly I think it’s the quality of food, and portions. Between the aperitif and the entree, by the time it’s time for main course and desert there’s only so much you can eat.

I think also the pace of the meals. When you take two hours for a meal your body really has time to feel full. It gave me a better sense of how much I actually wanted/needed to eat. I spent a month in the south of France, and went almost a month without eating red meat before I noticed. All the food was so rich and flavorful, I didn't miss it.

You’re so charming and I love to listen to what you have to say. I weigh myself a few days before I go for a physical just to keep track. But basically, I can tell how much I weigh by how tight my skinny outfits fit. I just turned 69 (yeah) and am 5 1/2" and 110 lbs (give or take 2 lbs up or down from that point). So, my BMI is a little under 21. Of course, whenever I'm in a theater show, without trying, I can lose 5lbs -- but it comes back quickly when the show is over.

Then when I arrived at my apartment I had to carry the groceries up 5 flights of stairs ! And when we went out to a restaurant to eat I had to get on the bicycle to ride to and from the restaurant! I was 50 lbs slimmer that I am here in the US because I go to Aldsi or Wegman with the car and I over buy ! Lol I drive every where and only when I walk the dog do I walk ! The problem in America is our food is basically poisoned. we have so many hormones, pesticides, preservatives and GMOs added into our food supply that it's impossible to avoid it at this point. There are MANY things added to our food supply that are banned in europe.... i'm convinced this is the main reason when americans (who restrict their diets very much in America) can go to Europe and eat literally anything and lose weight. it's the food supply. so all of the advice in the world isn't really going to help that. i will say i do virtually all of the things suggested here and i'm not effortlessly thin anymore (i used to be but as i get older it gets harder). but i've heard over and over and over americans going to europe for a few weeks and eating all kinds of things they "can't eat" here (carbs, bread, sugar, alcohol) and lose weight/inflammation. we have to fix the food supply to address this problem.

I do many of these habits, and I’m the slimmest one in my family. I just try and stay active, and eat lots of veggies and fruit on a daily basis, so when it comes time for a big meal (like thanksgiving) or a date night I can splurge a little. I also have a little piece of chocolate every night after dinner.
I don’t deprive myself, just try and crowd out the bad stuff with the healthier options.
It’s not a difficult to maintain lifestyle, it’s just a bit difficult to get the change started. Once you make those healthier changes your body makes it so difficult to go back to unhealthy habits, because you feel so crappy when you do.

But I worry about my safety walking everywhere now, even during the day-time. I had an abusive ex and always worry that if I'm not in the car, he could approach me and do me harm. If you are going somewhere- you walk a brisk 10-15 minutes to your subway station, you get out and then walk to your destination, then walk back to your subway, get out and walk back to your apartment. It’s non stop. We grow up with it and accept it because it’s the only life we have- until we move to other states where every activity requires driving. Now THAT is weird.

I got sick some years ago with gastritis and could only eat applesauce, banana and rice. I went down to 140 lbs. I looked like Skeletor! Nobody believes me when I weigh myself. I am lucky I build muscle easily and , as a Senior age 63, I make sure I eat lots of protein. I ride my bike and walk. I no longer go to gym. my bodyfat percentage is 33%, and I'm ok with that. at my age, its actually lower than the norm...I will say though, that I have a very large bust, and, I actually weighed each breast by placing my scale on the kitchen table, and , omg, each of my DDD weighs over 2 and a half lbs! so there's 5 lbs right there!

Many french women smoke, which keeps them looking slim, but they are not healthier than Americans. Same thing with European men in general. American women and men look younger as well, though perhaps not as slim in general. In general, American men are better looking than french men. Europeans age more drastically. I know my opinion is not popular, but I wanted to share anyway. I have traveled a lot and lived in a few different countries. I live in the USA now. Don't diet. Eat in moderation and be active. I try to eat 90% things that I’ve cooked or know every ingredient is real food when eating at home. Sometimes in the supermarket I will have a craving for something junky and when I pick it up and read the ingredient list the number of ingredients that are chemicals I don’t recognize or filler ingredients really puts me off buying it 😂

@@gabrielacluciuniuc3451 The key is what do we mean by "less carbs". Most people on "keto" diets want people to have less than 20 a day, which is essentially the amount found in 1 apple. What's been found out about some of these highly restrictive diets-like Carnivore- women need more carbs than men. The key is to stay away from simple carbs (most sweets/desserts, sodas) and have more complex carbs ( fruits/veggies) since the body processes them differently.
Of course, portion control is essential as well. I drink massive amounts of water a day- close to 4 liters of water. Apart from one cup of coffee in the morning, I don't drink anything besides water.

I completely agree about French food being the best in the world. One thing to add is that when I was living in France, I noticed that the portion sizes are a lot smaller than in the UK, Eastern Europe or in the US. To be honest it was an adjustment for me and at the beginning I was hungry quite often. Once I got used to it though, it became part of my lifestyle, even when I moved out of France. Oh and apart from the bread, a lot less carbs too.
For me it’s just the perfect balance because I can eat whatever I want to, in smaller quantities. We are all different, but the diet advertised by fitness influencers that contain egg whites, chicken-broccoli- rice with low fat everything does not work for me in the long run.

As an Italian, this video resonates with me. I usually keep my diet on the simple side, eating mostly like my grandma would've done. I indulge in something different once a month and every day I eat a sweet thing for breakfast, but I keep my portions controlled. I started to pay attention to my body more after my 30s and I realized many of us are too comfortable with feeling stuffed, lethargic and having a bad digestion after meals. So I decided to eat foods that my body can handle and I stop before feeling full. And I make sure to eat 2-3 fruits and 5 veggies every day, more during the summer. Alcohol is a no for me, it's not worth it, just a glass during Christmas maybe. And I stop eating after 7 PM, it's the lightest meal of my day, otherwise I really can't have a good sleep. I focus on walking and I'm doing pilates as well, and it's something I find sustainable on the long term. In the end, keeping it simple and listening to my body is what matters more to me.

I'm also a Frenchie living abroad and I agree with everything apart from the statement that all French food is butter-based and extremely rich everywhere. I'm from Provence (South-Eastern part of France) where we have a lighter and healthier Mediterranean diet with more grilled fish, olive oil and tons of veggies. French cuisine is very diverse, that's the beauty of it. You drive 300 km away and you'll find they eat more meat and cook with duck fat. But, it's true, all of us have a balanced diet between proteins, carbs and fiber. Also, when we indulge ourselves with a viennoiserie or a feast as described by Frédérique, we will eat less the next meals to compensate.

I do agree french food is delicious. Yeah I grew up with salad at every meal. I think another thing is preservatives. And a lot of stuff is within walking distance. And portion size is key as well.

Honestly, this is the best advice I heard ever. And this woman is not even a health expert.

  • @KarlaBedminister

I believe the fact is that due to the hot and cold food at the same time in the stomach, the food isn't digested well because the enzymes working on each type of food is pH and temperature specific so all the nutrients aren't received. This used to happen to me when I was younger so I ate a lot and never got thicker or get a big belly. It didn't at all mean that my thinness was healthy because all the healthy food I was eating wasn't staying in my body. Having headphones, I have known or heard from a health expert is not recommended in terms of earhealth for long periods or when exercising. What is good about ice cream? Just because it looks or tastes nice doesn’t mean it's good. The pasta can be whole wheat or healthy. Right now with gadgets you can even make your own spaghetti with vegetables.

The most detailed part of this talk is about food and grazing between meals bcuz, as we know, great bods are made in the kitchen FIRST , the gym, the walks, the swims, weights etc support an overall healthy outlook. So, the French "secret" comes down to eating right and not snacking . The rest is icing

What you said about salad dressing is an important point. Most commercial dressings are full of fat. Much better to stick with a ribbon of olive oil with lemon juice or vinegar. Add some nuts ( good fat means staying full) Bon appetite! Good video and tips.

It used to be like that in NY...all the fun walking and exploring....it is just too dangerous now. I cannot even do it looking beautiful for fear of violence(lately NY women are getting punched randomly in the head). When I was in Paris, I ate it all, lost weight walking and exploring...and I do think the food in Europe is more pure. ❤Thanks for this post. You inspired me to join the new Spa/gym in my new NJ suburb! I hate working out at home...so boring! I am thin..not fat yet...you gave me hope❤ Thank You! Bonsoir!)

This is very good advice. People in the Uk have been persuaded that butter is bad for you and have replaced it with seed oils , this is one of the worst things that we've done. Seed oils arent good for us at all. Thank you for the video, most enjoyable , especially seeing someone who obviously enjoys their food

When I visited France last May, walked, walked and walked.....ate the most delicious and fresh (farm to fork) meals, portioned, and relaxed, unrushed dining. Returned to US and lost 20 pounds, and I changed my lifestyle. Reduced alcohol consumption and nutrition along with physical activities. ❤❤❤

This was great! You are right: movement is the key. I no longer live in Paris (where I ate whatever I wanted and never gained weight), but now back in the US, I find that it is because I walk to work (even going up and down stairs in the metro/subway) is why I tend to lose weight during the week and don't eat much at night -- normally nothing at all at night except a light snack or drink and that's all. I eat a decent breakfast, a big lunch, and light snack before I leave work. So far, at age 55, it is working for me.

Thank you for sharing. It is all sensible and what I have been mostly doing my entire adult life. I am 58 y/o. I say mostly because, since I am American, there have been times when I have counted calories, weighed myself daily and tried diets. All that ever does is add stress to my life. Moderation and exercise has always been the key for me and I find the best way to know I am a fit size is the way my clothes feel on my body. Thank you for the validation.

Hi Frederique, I am not French but I have always listened to my body - if I know that I´m going to have a huge meal, I eat less a few days before and after. If I´ve eaten too much cheese or eggs, I balance that out with salads or vegetables. That is is key to staying slim and to eat the good things without exploding. lots of love, I love your videos.

So balance and moderation, something I've been doing for decades because I love to eat EVERYTHING! Although being over 50, now I'd rather have a bit of weight on than not. I do not like how I look when I'm skinny. It shows in my face and not in a good way. Having said all that, a good night's sleep is the most important thing which I find so hard to do sometimes.
Thank you for the interesting vid!

I do almost all these things, the only thing I'm struggling to add to my routine is the exercise. I have a 1 y/o boy and a 5 y/o girl. Before the boy I was running two times a week and going to the gym. My plan is to go back to my former routine. My diet is pretty good, but you have inspired me to add veggies to every one of my meals. I loved all the advice! I'm subscribing for sure! 😘

When I studied in Paris - and I just adored it - the weight simply dropped off on its own because I walked everywhere and ate such great food saving room for dinner with friends. Brunch at weekends was the best and always had petit fours or dessert everyday. I was tiny.
