    5 Steps to Overcome Fear of Public Speaking
    Step 1: Understand that you are experiencing a built-in biological reaction to fear.
    Remember that fear is a useful tool to help you survive. Your mind and body will get a danger alert to help you remain safe. Your conscious mind is still in control so long as you acknowledge the fear and how you will use it.
    Step 2: Acknowledge that you are experiencing auto-triggered biological responses that are intended to give you protective benefits
    It’s normal to feel pressure and increased stress when you experience fear. Do not panic when you start to feel these symptoms of increased sweating, rapid heart rate, tightening of muscles or otherwise. Remind yourself that this is part of the protective mechanism of fear that can help you stay focused throughout your presentation.
    Step 3: Assess your fear level to judge whether you can cope with the fear or if the fear is too high. If the fear is too high, be sure to check out the video below for hands-on methods that will help you reduce this level of fear.
    Take a few deep breaths and honestly assess how afraid you really are. Focus on going through the conscious process of assessing the stakes involved to address any disproportions to your perception of danger involved.
    Step 4: Understand what is happening in your mind.
    Fear is a reaction to your perception of danger. If you are feeling an escalated fear of public speaking, understand that your conscious mind has the power to overcome this through self-development, coaching and practice. The worst thing you can do is give into the fear because that reinforces an on-going cycle. Instead, face your fear with preparedness and start with small presentations.
    Step 5: Practice public speaking in a safe place with a group of supportive friends.
    Practice makes perfect! The best way to face and overcome an escalated fear of public speaking and to deliver a more confident performance is to practice in a “laboratory”. This gives you the opportunity to practice giving presentations and lowers the stakes so you can practice managing that fear in a less threatening environment.

      Vendrix Uther think of it like this, you think people can see you shaking but they can't. Try to not focus on yourself shaking. Just try to relax and think of how to outcome will be good. Then you'll get better over time

    • @AlainJeanBaptiste
      @AlainJeanBaptiste  5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Hi Vendrix, see my reply to Gabriela :) also imagine yourself feeling confident before the presentation. See yourself as having completed your presentation successfully and people are happy to listen to you. Focus on them being happy not how they will think about you doing the presentation. Change your focus and it will change your outcome.

      If you would take death before talking in front of people that is not "fear", it likely eludes to you being unhappy in many areas, or having a mental issue. You should seek help if you mean what you say.

    One really good point which I took from this video was that, we can do it. But it's just that we think we can't do it. I recently thought about how amazing it would be if I can practice presentations in a non judgemental area till I feel comfortable, but not feeling comfortable doesn't mean I can't do it. It's just us over thinking... we can physically and mentally do it but we just over think over things. And also, in the crowd we are not presenting in front of hundreds of ourselves who our constantly judging every mistake. just normal people, who would like to see you do well and don't really care much if you do mess up. I did absolutely terrible for 2 years in college when I presented. and I mean I nervously spoke, my voice shaked and everyone would just look at me and they would feel akward too I could tell. even now I feel a bit nervous but I can speak clearly. I can present amazingly, it's just my mind over thinking. whether my mind becomes more positive or even more negative it doesn't change the fact that, I already can do it.

      I've been doing a lot more presentations in grade 12, and so far, even though I've only done 4 out of maybe 9, I have made some progress. The first presentation, my voice was a little shaky, the second my voice was only shaky for a brief sentence in the end (mind you I only read a paragraph), the third presentation was the best one, my voice didn't shake at all and I was presenting by my self even while my powerpoint failed. The fourth one was a set back, but the presentation was on spot and I wasn't sure whether it counted. (I only had to say 2 sentences lol), but still my voice shook for the whole 2 sentences. And I have another one coming up, however, I know that when I PRACTICE everything feels slightly better.

    • @AlainJeanBaptiste
      @AlainJeanBaptiste  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      OhhGrav congratulations on your progress and getting and taking the plunge. One thing I could add to help you out is to suggest that you only focus on how you can help the others. 1 or 50 people won't matter because you are focused on them so you forget about yourself. I used to be very shy and I do still get nervous a couple of minutes before I start but I know its because I don't want to offend anyone not because I think I won't deliver a certain way. Hope this helps, godspeed.

    My main issue has always been peoples facial expressions. When it looks like people are disinterested (yawning, looking away, etc) it throws me off. Then I remember that I do that too and it helped me realize that although people don't always show it, they still may be engaged with you and that has helped me get better at public speaking in front of seemingly disinterested people.

      Hey Youngboytoonice, one good way is to be prepared before and rehearse. I know it might be boring or you might not like to do it but it allows you to have much more control. If its classmates imagine that you would be presenting something to your team and make it friendly and fun. Focus on how you want to feel during the presentation. From experience in doing public speaking in two different languages simultaneously with hundreds of people while being recorded, the thing I found best is to explain it to people and allow yourself to make jokes at the same time. My anxiety goes from 0 to 100 as soon as I begin public speaking. The build up to the moment is panic. Sometimes on occasion I think I'll be ok but 10 seconds into it I start losing breath, voice shaking, anxiety at highest peak. Biggest problem is thinking about what I want to say while public speaking, it's almost like my mind goes blank and I can't express myself the way I intend, the words are just not there. I think it has a lot to do with people looking at me, seeing there eyes, and perhaps thinking negatively. A slight change in their facial expression that I might perceive as bad can induce it immediately. How can I work on this?

    There's a difference between the traditional anxiety associated with public speaking and the current nervousness that has a definite sexual undertone, especially among females and it presents itself with increased hand gestures and double entendres. These two actions seem to be done unconsciously, but conscious awareness of the action seems to occur shortly afterward, creating a nervous "sleep"-wake-"sleep"-wake cycle, until it becomes a mostly "sleep" cycle which continues until the climax of the speech. There is mass hypnosis going on. Wake up to this and then wake up as many as you can because there is a sinister element to this that we may never become aware of. I also notice that whoever has kept their mind focused on important things other than sex tend to do well when publicly speaking. So we all need to wake up and clear our minds. Or we will degenerate into an animal that has no conscience.

    • @ivanivanow4642
      @ivanivanow4642 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Spot on man! I also believe the same thing. I feel like it is a "public secret" that people who are good at public speaking have figured out on their own. Family men/women are very calm people in general, because there's no existential sexual dread in their mind. When I drop all aspects of sexuality in my mind I become very calm in public or in conversations (I'm a single male)
      I came to this conclusion after experimenting and analysing what goes through my mind and how I feel and act during different mental attitudes I have. I have a more complex explanation, but this suffices.

    • @ivanivanow4642
      @ivanivanow4642 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It has to do with how you interpret the situation and how you act in it (in a sense you choose a "role")

      Hi Himani, do you rehearse before you go on stage? How much do you know the material you are presenting. Find out what do you focus on just before you get on stage and what are the beliefs you have about presenting your material. You can imagine yourself having succeeded before you go on stage and then go towards the you that have succeeded. Its a way to go beyond the anxiety. I am setting up a new studio for video production next month and will be doing videos on how to handle stage fright again and anxiety so stay tune.

I'm scared that our professor won't be able to hear my voice when i speak because ever since my school days Whenever, I've to speak or present in front of my class i couldn't. I would start having panic attack and forget what I've to speak. And I'd always get told to speak louder since they can't hear me. Help me how can i speak loudly and clearly so that our professor and everyone in the class would be able to hear me?

      Hey Kenny yyou need to project your voice is a technique you can do. Beforehand (like the day before if its not to late) Imagine that you are confident and that you are talking in a way in which your voice carries all the way to the back of the room. Forget the past focus on the future. Every presentation is different and a new one. Also practice your voice and if you can try to find an actors voice class in your area that will greatly help you. Here is a recent one I found on youtube for you. National Theatre: Vocal Warm-Up - TH-cam

      Hi Mussarat. One thing you can do before is know your material perfectly well. Another thing you can do is control your breathing and imagine in your mind that you are presenting in front of a couple of friends then imagine a bigger number of people. You can call me for one on one coaching if you really want to do public speaking. Try this for starts and get back to me and I can see if I can give you more feedback from what you started with.

    So I need so much help when it comes to public speaking. When I give presentations I have to do them in English which is a second language for me. I freak out, turn red, my voice breaks, my body shakes, and sometimes my eyes start to water a little bit which makes everything worse. If I have to give presentations in my native language I still have the same like “symptoms” but not so extreme. How can I get better??? please help

    • @AlainJeanBaptiste
      @AlainJeanBaptiste  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Gabriela thanks for watching my video. One thing you can do since the representation is in another language is to visualize yourself saying it in that language first. This will allow you to practice in that language and correct it at the same time. once you have done it a couple of time and feel better than practice it out loud and imagine the people want to hear from you. Most times we imagine negative stuff and our body reacts to protect us. I will be honest with you, before every presentation, all great speakers feel nervous as they really care for people and like myself want to do an awesome job. So a little bit of stress is ok but remember that you have to imagine yourself succeeding before the presentation and that will help you feel more confident.

    • @AlainJeanBaptiste
      @AlainJeanBaptiste  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      How much practice do you put before you have to do your presentation in either language?

      Thank you Christian, for your great feedback. I will take you up on that :). Now that my new studio is up and running and my program on reality creation is almost complete. I will ask someone with more anxiety if they can come to my studio and do a demonstration with me. Great idea I love! I can't guarantee it will be under 12 minutes but hey if it can be done that will show more possibilities for success.

    • @AlainJeanBaptiste
      @AlainJeanBaptiste  6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hey Goutham thank you. First off nothing is wrong with you because of that :) Take a breath and focus on your message instead of the people. Remember yo have something important to say say it. The reason you stumble is because your focus is probably on "what will they think of me" which takes time for your brain to process at the same time its trying to deliver your speech. Remember your brain can only do one thing at a time. Keep me posted

      Try controlling your breathing so that you can calm your heart down. Allow yourself to think about what you want to say to the person instead of maybe thinking about how they view you. I beleive that if you work on your breathing like some people do when they are extremely nervous do it will help a bit more for you to stay in control and be more confident.

    How do I overcome it?

    • @AlainJeanBaptiste
      @AlainJeanBaptiste  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Pursenba, There are a couple of things you can do to minimize this as it is physiological. One is to wear and undershirt or t-shirt under that does not show. You can wear a jacket or a suit that will also hide it. Make sure to wear antiperspirant or deodorant. I have often seen people bring a gym towel and wipe themselves up a bit bit for as they sweated a lot. I remember doin a commercial once and I had to use a steamer to get my sweat out and a dryer so you have to be creative sometimes also. Hope this helps and remember to subscribe as I think I might just do a video on this that could be cool to watch. Thanks for the question and Godspeed

    • @AlainJeanBaptiste
      @AlainJeanBaptiste  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Ishak, please read the latest comments I posted to help you with a technique on calming yourself. Another thing you can do is ask yourself what is making my voice shake. Do I shake before or during? Ask yourself what am I telling myself or what are my beliefs about this interview. Again i must admit during interviews I am nervous myself. One thing I have learned by taking up acting classes (So I can get better on cam:)) is that you can't please everyone and as they say in modeling if they don't take you it's not because of you its because they are looking for something specific and your simply not it. This allows you to take it as feedback. Just remember that you have worth and that someone will eventually recognize it through synchronicity and get you to that place you are looking to be in. Hope you subscribed and hope this helps. Godspeed

    • @AlainJeanBaptiste
      @AlainJeanBaptiste  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Kiran. 10 Control your breathing. 2) Change your state by changing the images in your mind. If its like a phobia it means your imagining something that is most probably big so make the image smaller. If you feel you are in it imagine being out of the image at first and then having control over it. I would start remembering when you were truly confident about something and then bringing that feeling in that image of you presenting up front then imagining that you are going to do the presentation. I hope this helps for now.

      Hi Barsha, I can say from personal experience that I do. Especially when I speak French for some reason. I suggest you first calm yourself by doing a gentle meditation or I use a small mantra to help me pace myself before I go on stage. I admit I ALWAYS get nervous before I get on stage. The reason being I don't know everyone I used to be afraid of failing. Then I started listening to my emotional self first and then calm down and view every speaking engagement as feedback to make it better the next time. You learn how to "Work the Crowd" is what I call it. This clearly was helpful to her, but to say that she lost her public speaking fear is simply not true. Most people would report that they have "public speaking fear" and yet they still are able to do it when it's necessary. This was just the beggining of one session... I know NLP practictioners love to say that they "instant cured" people, but this is simply not true. First, what there was to cure anyway? Public speaking anxiety is quite the norm. She didn't lost it, she just started to see it in a different way, which can be helpful...but as far as we can see in this video, she was just answering questions and for the nature of this situation, she was at least partially answering what she thought was expected.

    • @AlainJeanBaptiste
      @AlainJeanBaptiste  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Alexandre, in this case the woman now is able to give other public speaking conferences for her work. We have kept in touch with her after the 3 day training on NLP Persuasion and influence IN MIND which was the course this was taken from. She was not able to do that before. Your point about being cured is good as it used more for the explanation instead of using the term as we would use it for an illness. Thanks for your comment and also for taking the time to see the video.

      Hey x0x x0x don't be so hard on yourself. Honestly view this as a way for your body to tell you that it's afraid, find out about how it is afraid by asking it what its trying to communicate to you and that should start helping you cope with that emotional self which is probably terrified. Once you know you can ask that part of you to start realizing that like riding a bike if it falls down sometimes it will get back up and ultimately start riding :) hope this helps

    • @SteveCherches
      @SteveCherches 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alain Jean-Baptiste that may be true, but this woman did not lose her fear in this video. The title and the content are misleading. “Clickbait” is when the title of a video does not truthfully reflect the actual video content. I believe that to be the case for this video. I’m familiar with NLP. I’ve also been a presentation skills trainer and coach for over 15 years. These types of videos do a disservice to our industry. I’m sure you do a lot of good work. I just found this video to be misleading and/or dishonest.

    • @AlainJeanBaptiste
      @AlainJeanBaptiste  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for your clarification and feedback Steve. The title was more to show people to keep possibilities in mind and that it can be done in a short period of time. I will be creating more of videos soon. Our next video will be more of a step by step approach as I get more familiar with how to properly present things on TH-cam.
