Want to be happy? Be grateful | David Steindl-Rast

  • The one thing all humans have in common is that each of us wants to be happy, says Brother David Steindl-Rast, a monk and interfaith scholar. And happiness, he suggests, is born from gratitude. An inspiring lesson in slowing down, looking where you're going, and above all, being grateful.

I disagree. The points for the argument is very WEAK at best! I find existence a burden regardless of my circumstances of life and I am very angry at the creator for forcing me to existence without my consent! To me it’s no different than living as a slave and telling slaves they should be grateful to have masters who shelter and feed them scraps! I hate God if he even exist or whoever is responsible for my existence because I would chose non-existence. I really don’t care if I won the lottery one day I would still be ungrateful for this forced existence! The antinatalist were right that life is truly not worth living since a majority of the time is some form of suffering with some fleeting moments of joy! I hate God or the creator and I see him, her or it as a dirty little rapist who forces people to exist only to suffer a majority of the time. The next time someone tells me to be grateful I’ll tell them to go suck a D*ck and be grateful for my advice!

This just hit so hard... I work at a coffee shop and today one of my regular could see that I was not my usual self. He tells me his entire life story which is exactly what I am dealing with right now. Page by page I am literally going through the same things he has dealt with. He tell me that he’ll give me a word a day and that my homework is to read or watch something related to that word. Today’s word was GRATITUDE. So here I am in tears. I can’t believe how crazy it is that sometimes a complete stranger takes the time to STOP, LOOK and GO. This man literally took the time to say this person needs help.

The problem is that we are always looking at other people's life and we want what they have. We have to understand that we all have our own reasons to be happy, we have to look at our own life and realize about the reasons that we have in order to be grateful and happy.

    • @MikenNinginThai

That is the illusion, the illusion that one can be happy. Happiness is different for everyone and changes through the years. A person who is isolated from SOCIETY would not have a clue on what happiness is or isn't it is a word that people give meaning and feeling to. Rather than looking to be "happy" just accept life for what is is...... Want to be grateful? What does that even mean or look like? I know what society says it means. People are made from culture and environment it is simple as that nothing more. There is no good or bad, wrong or right, there is only behaviors which again are formed by culture.

Sometimes I get really cynical, everything is wrong and I get pissy and annoyed. But then I try to focus only on myself and how fortunate I am. I focus on being gratefull and reflect. And I am always surprized on how quickly it gets me in a good mood and more optimistic. I almost instantly become more empathetic to those with real struggles. When I express gratitude towards others I can see how it effects them, and almost infects them with happiness, and that makes me happy.

I wish I could love this video. The most beautiful thing I have ever read. From Man's Search For Meaning by Viktor Frankl. Frankl was interned in a concentration camp. " We stumbled on in the darkness, over big stones and through large puddles, along the one road leading from the camp. The accompanying guards kept shouting at us and driving us with the butts of their rifles. Anyone with very sore feet supported himself on his neighbor's arm. Hardly a word was spoken; the icy wind did not encourage talk. Hiding his mouth behind his upturned collar, the man marching next to me whispered suddenly: "If our wives could see us now! I do hope they are better off in their camps and don't know what is happening to us."
That brought thoughts of my own wife to mind. And as we stumbled on for miles, slipping on icy spots, supporting each other time and again, dragging one another up and onward, nothing was said, but we both knew: each of us was thinking of his wife. Occasionally I looked at the sky, where the stars were fading and the pink light of the morning was beginning to spread behind a dark bank of clouds. But my mind clung to my wife's image, imagining it with an uncanny acuteness. I heard her answering me, saw her smile, her frank and encouraging look. Real or not, her look was then more luminous than the sun which was beginning to rise.
A thought transfixed me: for the first time in my life I saw the truth as it is set into song by so many poets, proclaimed as the final wisdom by so many thinkers. The truth - that love is the ultimate and the highest goal to which Man can aspire. Then I grasped the meaning of the greatest secret that human poetry and human thought and belief have to impart: The salvation of Man is through love and in love. I understood how a man who has nothing left in this world still may know bliss, be it only for a brief moment, in the contemplation of his beloved. In a position of utter desolation, when Man cannot express himself in positive action, when his only achievement may consist in enduring his sufferings in the right way - an honorable way - in such a position Man can, through loving contemplation of the image he carries of his beloved, achieve fulfillment. For the first time in my life I was able to understand the meaning of the words, "The angels are lost in perpetual contemplation of an infinite glory."

I was just in a car accident where I ran a red, a car T-boned me, and my car flipped. All I came out with was a scratch on my elbow. I’m been hating myself and disappointed in my actions and I’ve been trying really hard to be grateful for what I’ve been given: a second chance
Edit: I praise God for His mercy that he showed me that day and I’m thankful for His grace. It was a process to understand that people simply make mistakes and they don’t define us. Choosing joy every day is a challenge but can be done. Ora pro nobis

From the feelings in my heart and in my mind, I thank the Universe:
for revealing to me that my purpose is to serve the Universe,
for the power within me to be more observant, without judgment, of the events and the people around me,
for the power within me to assert myself, and to project my positive energy vibrations in my devotion to serving the Will of the Universe,
for guiding me and providing for me in all my past years, and for guiding and protecting me from all present and future perils,
for speaking to me through the words and actions of the Spiritual Beings of others, and from the revelations I receive through my Higher Mind,
for the power within me to show my gratitude to others for playing their parts in my spiritual progress, and to call down blessings upon them,
for my wisdom to know that all events in my life, and the events in the lives of others, are expressions of the Laws of the Universe.
I am always focused on my devotion and gratitude to the Universe:
for the Power of the Prime Creator WITHIN me,
for the Light & Radiance of the Prime Creator shining through me,
for my Higher Mind that guides me through my daily activities,
for my heart radiation field that expresses my patience and unconditional love toward others.
I am blessed by, and I am grateful to the Universe that:
I AM a channel through which the Universe sends its wisdom.
I AM guided by my Higher Mind.
    I AM a co-creator with the Universe.
I AM part of The Infinite that expresses itself through me.
I AM in perfect health, and at One with the Universe, the ALL.

I find it funny that people question him because he is religious. Is this video titled "Want to be a nuclear physicist?"? No, he is talking from his own perspective on how he lives a happy life and how you can too; and being happy I believe he is perfectly qualified to talk on this subject.
If you go out into the world thinking 'I do not like this person/group, there is absolutely nothing I can learn from them' then you're setting yourself up for an unenlightened closed off existence.
Remember, Rudyard Kipling in his poem 'If' made the point that we become men when we are able to connect with people from all walks of life.

Rushing thru life seems to be so common for years now, but what we should never ever forget is to have gratitude towards what's life has been giving you. Someday I just sat still and simply be grateful for just being alive, those ego is torn down. Thanks for putting gratefulness into easily digesting perspective. Keep inspiring people David. 👍🏻
