2:04:48 - If you'd like to possibly read too much into it, Quaithe's name sounds somewhat similar to "quoth", a word repeated many times in The Raven by Poe: "Quoth the Raven" as the Raven keeps repeating that one word to every question. The choice of this strange name could be alluding to Quaithe's connection to Bloodraven. A reminder that the bird itself is at some point addressed as a "Prophet" by the main character, and said to have flown in from a "nightly shore" and "night's Plutonian shore", which is a reference to the Roman god of the underworld. And when the character opens a door to it there's "darkness there and nothing more". The Raven is also described as "grim, ungainly, ghastly, gaunt, and ominous" and "his eyes have all the seeming of a demon that is dreaming".
that's good. Martin references that line in the poem when he says that the Crone of the Faith of the 7 "opened the door of death and let the first raven into the world"
Re-listening to last night's stream I think Lightbringer nails it in this statement: "It's a really cool made-up name; it doesn't mean anything" .. I love all the theories from everyone.. I'm going w Quaith is just Quaith .. Love you guys 👏🏼❤️🔥😘
Quaithe = The Quai, makes sense to me. If you pronounce it like a German you'd get a word very similar to that for Wharf (Kai). From Wikipedia: "A wharf (pl. wharves or wharfs), quay (/kiː/ kee, also /keɪ, kweɪ/ k(w)ay[2]), staith, or staithe is a structure on the shore of a harbour or on the bank of a river or canal where ships may dock to load and unload cargo or passengers." The English pronunciation also seems to be the same as "Key".
Sir Pterry Pratchett also had Death attend a Fancy Dress Ball (he likes the little sausages they serve). He outright says “I EXPECT THEY WILL BE VERY SURPRISED WHEN IT IS TIME TO REMOVE OUR MASKS”
I kinda hope Quaithe is a character from Essos with some secrets of her own. Because I like the idea of agency concerning Westeros coming from there as well. But the Elissa theory is the most sound to me.
Early in the day and week...the news full of bad things, like always. Then you two gentlemen pop up in my recommendations, a doorway for some good old escapism. Thanks for your contribution to a better day :D
18:45 just a heads-up for Tim, Dany's Silver is actually alive all the way through ADWD, and into the Barristan chapter in TWOW. But I wouldn't be surprised if she dies in the Battle for Meereen, unfortunately.

I liked this one, im glad i tuned in. And now i have to the tangent straight up off topic thing. So, i keep waiting for the Tywin video and I've noticed something. But I'm also looking forward to the possible Roose video you alluded to in your last Arya chapter reread. Roose has to be more than any ordinary man. Everyone seems to fear him. In the scene where takes Jamie from The Brave Companiond and they go quiet at the sound of his soft voice and do as their told. These men are monsters in man skins as much anyone in the story and battle hardened mercenaries. But they fear Roose Bolton on sight and sound! That's not normal. Also the magically blighted, haunted ruined, evil castle that is Harrenhal follows suit in this regard. "On your knees for the Lord of The Dreadfort. And Harrenhal knelt." Theres something up with him.
@DavidLightbringer I saw the Lannister family video. I just assumed Tywin was still bound for his own solo video like Ned. I saw the Roose video as well but you seem to be of the opinion that Roose isn't magical in some regard. I feel like he has to be other than fully human because of this fear he commands from people like the Bloody Mummers. Roose isn't personally well known for cruelty like they are because "a quiet land, a quiet people". But they're scared of him. A garden variety psycho couldn't manage that. Thanks for the response.

Ashara as Quaithe also builds up a unique story for that character and maybe connections to what Lyanna knew. I prefer Ashare being with Howland. That’s an enough compelling story in itself. My point at this stage is that if it isn’t Sheara than it is mostly/only a version of “Quaithe being Quaithe”. Adding Alyssa into they doesn’t really change any fundamentals of what we know.
Could Meera be the heir simply because they are taking seriously Jojen's green dreams (which are allegedly never wrong) and that he knows when he will die (presumably he knows it is before Meera)?
Just started watching! Missed the stream cos i got called into work on my usual LML stream day! Also new place looks cool David! Hope your happy there! 😊😊😊😊
@19:00 Just a minor correction but I believe Silver only dies in the Red Waste on the show. Barriston rides her to battle in one of the WoW Mereen chapters.
Been following you since you and Quinn did your Ides Of March T.W.O.W series! You and Tim should record audiobooks for The entire ASOIAF Universe doing different characters and voices. Just sayin 💯
The phrase "There are no children in Asshai" could mean "There are no Innocences in Asshai" meaning even the children that live there are currupted by evil or do evil things. The others try to flatter Dany and use different languages, but Quaithe tells her plainly in the Common Tongue that they come seeking dragons. Might be a good sign going forward that Quaithe is telling Dany the truth and has her (or the world’s) best interests at heart.
Quaithe makes me think of the death tarot card. The card didn't represent actual death, but leaving things that no longer serve us and transformation. She started communicating with Dany at a time where both of those things were present in her journey
Broken thunderbolts are a meteor reference. This is spelled out in The King of Elfland’s Daughter with the witch who uses a “thunderbolt,” metal from a meteorite, to make the hero’s magic sword.
At @1:10:30, to note, Diana/Jyana and Howl’s Moving Castle: The author of the book is Diana Wynne Jones 😉 so there’s another Diana reference and again I am blown away by the world building and cross referencing.
Couple of thoughts on Elissa Farman's voyage West: 1. We only have the word of the sailors who turned back as to what happened. It's possible that their tales of terrifying storms and red skies are lies, pre-arranged with Elissa. May be they wanted to go back and she allowed them, but made a deal whereby they spread these tales to either a) stop people following her, and/or b) cover up what they _really_ found. That opens up the possibility of more information coming out, because it's unlikely that every sailor on the ships that returned would keep their silence forever. It may be that there's a dusty old scroll of some old salt's deathbed confession lying around waiting tobe discovered somewhere. 2. How did Corliss Velaryon know what Sunchaser looked like? Paintings are rare, expensive and time-consuming in Westeros, so it seems unlikely that somebody on the run, building ships to a time crunch, would have any incentive to commission one. That just leaves written accounts, but unless Sunchaser was VERY distinctive in some way, it's had to imagine a 200+ year old ship that's been damaged and repaired countless times being that easy to ID any more.
Interesting, but I don't buy any of these. One thing I do wonder is if Melisandre and Quaithe, both being shadow binders, were trained and sent out to find the promised one by the same person or organization. Fits with your "tutelage triangle".
1:33:31 @DavidLightbringer So I am listening to this late. I notice you guys don't point out the Authrian references much. Blood Raven is also a direct reference to Merlin, a Wizard who is trapped in a cave by his, depending on the telling unrequited, love. Niume, entraps and entombs her unresisting mentor within a tree, in a hole underneath a large stone, or inside a cave. Merlin also in more recent legends uses his entombment as an opportunity to time travel, and learn about things in the future, making his tomb a place outside time. Merlin takes Arthur on these trips teaching him about the world, magic, and what it means to be a good king to prepare him to rule England. Pretty much a direct beat for beat rip
@@DavidLightbringer I've watched hundreds of hours of your content just never comment or make it to live streams, So many missed Memory Sorrow and Thorn references too. I usually have your stuff on in the background so I'll try to comment more when I see it. Quaithe is also a reference to Utuk'ku, Lady Silver Mask, from MST the Terrible Queen of the Norns and Great Grandmother of Ineluki. I have a very strong suspicion Quaithe is going to end up being Shiera Seastar based on everything GRRM is drawing from and is somewhat opposed to Bloodraven either directly or is just betting on a different horse, Danny.
Do you think GRRM is using Quetzalcoatl, but with a female name spin, to remind him of who Quaithe is (Quetzalcoatl was the 'god of the morning star')?
Great stream, but I am kinda confused where you got those Japanese meanings from. As far as I know, none of these words sound anything like Shiera, maybe with the exception of "poetry" (詩), which is pronounced "shi". Still "shi" could also be the number four (四), death(死)or many other things depending on how it is written.
Why did GRRM just drop Elissa's ship in Asshai? Because it shows that Westeros can be invaded from the West & it's a reference to Magellan perishing during his circumnavigation.
So for Elden Ring, look at Ranni compared to Dany. Shes a moon queen who wishes the break the wheel of religious slavery. She has a dragon. Dies but is brought back to life. The player who marries her becomes her consort which is what I think Jon will become. This protagonist also is someone who dies and comes back to life. Ranni wants to restore death to her land, which Dany has to do too
Has anyone heard the theory that Ashara Dayne's parents are Rhaella Targaryen and Steffon Baratheon? Septa Shaena's Secrets has a video on it. Some fascinating theories worth checking out...
I love Shiera so I would like her to be Quaithe but honestly what Bloodraven says kinda implies she is dead. He says: "I have my own ghosts, Bran. A brother that I loved, a brother that I hated, a woman I desired. Through the trees, I see them still, but no word of mine has ever reached them. The past remains the past. We can learn from it, but we cannot change it." So at the very least he thinks that she is dead which is also possible but it would mean that they dont work together.
Elissa might not have lived to reach Asshai, like Magellan died before his ship finished the circumnavigation of the Earth in the 1519-1521. Also why would Elissa be so invested to live for 250+ years to talk to the the last Targaryen. She had no interest in magic/prophecy before going on her journey of exploration as far as we know.
Thats an idea of mine too - she’s one of the Last Hero’s Posse and is out in the world mov8ng pieces around and keeping a eye on The Others and because she”s beyond the wall she’s not fully preserved by the magicks there.
You missed out on the so-called continent, which, to be fair, probably is just a “little” mass of land, called Ulthos, when you mentioned no Americas type of land before Alyssa Farman hitting Western Essos aka Asshai-by-the-Shadow.
Honestly I wasn't a fan of Quaithe during my first read of asoiaf. I don't like riddles, they make me feel stupid 😂. But I've been more and more intrigued by her now that I know about theories of her hiding identity. I had a thought : Maybe Dany is not the only one who can see her and that's why she disappears when Missandei appears or anyone else. She could be really here, in the room with Dany, and could even touch her if she liked like the show version of the Night King touching Bran in a vision.
I think she is shiera we all know that Targaryen sometimes has prophetic dream and with bloodraven case his Targaryen prophetic dream was further enhanced with greenseer power so he is the one who might already see the future and we know that bloodraven has a relationship with shiera he might tell her something about the dream he had there is no information about shiera being dead she just disappear so chance are high that quaithe is shiera seastar
Maybe quaithe is grrm version of tolkiens wraiths? Wraiths were once men that are neither alive nor dead and feed off the energy of the ring and you can’t see there faces becaue if there hoods. Maybe quaithe was Alyssa Farman and after she got to ashi after many many years of being there she’s no longer living technically and she feeds off the energy of the oily black stone or something along those lines? Idk just riffing it here haha
The Quaithe is the friends we made along the way.

Is quaithe warging into Dany? Maybe that's why she's only in Danny's head and there's that weirwood mask
no it's glass candles, you can project dreams with those and she has one
1:25:22 of course, a bleeding star character invokes none other than Nissa-Nissa who it is said broke moon.
